Today was a great introduction to Cross Fit! Jimmy did a fantastic job introducing me to the curriculum, explaining the technique, and showing me how to make modifications for my skill level. The class was challenging, but it was a welcoming atmosphere. At the end, people came up to me and gave me a fist bump telling me I did well! People are so kind and encouraging here-- it made for a great start to my day!

We moved to Marblehead 5 plus years ago from South Boston and was looking for a Crossfit Gym in our area. We were welcomed with open arms at Crossfit The Swamp and have never looked back. One of the best community gyms around. Owners and coaches are professional, knowledgeable, respectful and genuinely care about all the members of the community.
The community has a motto of “Just Show Up” which does not mean just crushing a workout but really focuses on one walking through the door and getting the workout they need; it could be to get stronger, get faster, focus on one’s overall fitness and health or just get a workout in to de-stress from the adventures of daily life.
The members of the community, like the coaches, are supportive of each other which has led to so many long lasting friendships being created.
Just walk through the door and in a matter of seconds one will feel the positive energy this community generates. This community truly has inspiring things happening.

The Swamp, in my opinion, is hands down the best community gym in Swampscott, and quite possibly, the entire North Shore. The heart and soul of the gym is the coaching staff. They have established a fitness culture that makes it comfortable for CrossFit newbies to learn advanced lifts in a safe and controlled environment. The coaching staff also does an amazing job of differentiating workouts to individual athletes needs. For example, I had severe shin splints for a few months and the coaches always modified the program to accommodate my injury - but don’t be fooled - differentiating doesn’t make the workout easier.
The community aspect is also a key component of this gym. When I first joined, I struggled to complete the workouts and I was usually timed out. I think that some people would get upset or embarrassed by this, but it’s not an issue at The Swamp. Everyone supports everyone else. Even though I was last, and everyone else finished, gym members that I didn’t even know (yet) came up along side me and started doing the workout again just so I would not be alone. If that doesn’t scream community, I don’t know what does. In another example, Coach Mike D. always has people introduce themselves to someone new at the beginning of class - which naturally builds the community feel.
I love working out with the coaches and members of this gym. If you are looking to get into shape or just want to challenge yourself, come work out with us.
Lastly, I want to give a special shout out to all the coaches at The Swamp, especially Coach Paddie and Coach Nick. I appreciate everything you all put into the gym and into your coaching. Thank you for caring.

I’ve started going to the swamp around mid march after driving passed it for years going to the Salem planet fitness and I can say that it’s the best/ fun experience I’ve ever had. Sadly I did move to another city but if I was still local I’d be going almost everyday. The people are friendly and the coaches make going to the swamp worth it. All you gotta do is just show up 😉

The Swamp is an amazing gym, let me start first by saying that. The coaches always work with you and provide scaling options to make sure that you feel comfortable with what you are doing in the workout, and are constantly coming around to make sure you keep the form correct and work at a steady pace. Motivational and encouraging, they never make you do something you are not comfortable with doing, and there is no boot camp style yelling or anything like that. But they do make you work and push you to be the best you can be! A great gym with a great community of members and coaches, I have never felt anything but welcome when walking through the doors. Anyone who is a newbie to CrossFit like me but has wanted to take the plunge but is too nervous or self conscious to try like I was, join the Swamp and they’ll show you the ropes and get you into great shape!

It has changed my life in the short term, and will have unbelievable future benefits in my 50s, 60s and 80s. I was a collegiate tennis player, then rock climber, then surfer which led me into turning 38 and finding Crossfit. Now 40, thanks to the Swamp and Crossfit, I can say I am in the best (and by far the most FUNCTIONAL) shape of my entire life. I highly recommend this gym! I needed someone to basically show me the way, I get lost easily and distracted, but the coaches keep me grounded and motives to keep going and do better. When I have a hard time doing a workout they find ways to modify it they work with you so you can what you need. Everyone is super friendly and caring and it's nice to have that it really feels like a judge free zone. It's everything I've needed in a gym/workout.

Tremendous programming, well trained and supportive (and fun!) coaching, and a welcoming and inclusive community of people. The facilities are both spacious and clean- with ample equipment to meet the needs of any level athlete. The schedule is robust, meeting the needs of those with stricter working/family schedules. The gym also hosts a variety of special workouts aimed at getting everyone together. I’ve dabbled in just about every gym offering in the area since I’ve lived here and in Boston and this gym is hands down the best in the area and the city. Check it out; even if you’re intimidated by the idea of CrossFit, the coaches are amazing at making these workouts accessible and fun for every athlete, no matter the goals.

I've been doing Crossfit for about 6 years, I've visited different boxes all over the world and can confidently say that The Swamp is up there with the best of them. There's enough space for 15 people to do a full workout with every equipment they would need. The equipment is excellent, not just the barbells and weights, but also the assault bikes, rowers, racks, etc.
And the best thing is the coaching staff. Every coach is as thorough as the last one, so they will make sure you do your reps properly, following the standards, and most of all being safe.
If you have any doubts, do a drop-in and you'll want to join right away.

**I waited one year before writing a review**
Here are my thoughts:
CrossFit the Swamp is an incredible gym and community. I started my Crossfit journey back in 2011 and have experienced several other gyms along the way. I became a coach after a few years (no longer), and allowed it (along with a new diet) to changed my life for the better. In 2020, after a two years away from it due to a move and change in job, I was looking to get back into shape and came across Crossfit the Swamp after doing research on available gyms in the area.
The on-ramp experience, programming, in gym coaching, atmosphere, and challenges provided have been better than I could have imagined when signing up. All movements for the day's WOD are scaled, demoed, then fine tuned regardless of your experience or fitness level. You have the option to take more traditional Crossfit classes with a barbell and strength training focus, or join their SWEAT program which is a great way to get started as it's more about dumbbells, gymnastics, and cardio. No matter who you are or what your fitness history is, you'll do very well here.
Everyone from the owner, Mike, to the head coach, Paddy, all the way down to the newest coach on the roster are excellent coaches and human beings. You are pushed to better yourself and work hard in order to get better, while not being pushed so far that dangerous movements are done while exhausted and at speed with poor form. The staff here really does care.
It's a welcoming, supportive, and fun community. Holidays consist of Hero WODs done together as a gym, there are summer cookouts and special events during the Crossfit Open - it's just generally a place you'll want to be with people you'll want to meet. So long as I live on the North Shore, I won't be looking to go anywhere else.
You should join up, get to work, and see if it doesn't change your life like it did for me.

I cannot say enough good things about The Swamp. If you are reading these reviews then you are probably in the market for a new gym…. The Swamp has it ALL! The coaches are fantastic. They are able to make any and every workout approachable for everyone in class. The members are welcoming and friendly. The gym itself is really big offering plenty of space with lots of equipment. One of the many great things about The Swamp is the programming of workouts and the ability to also come in during Open Gym times to lift/sweat as you wish. Come check it out for yourself!

This is the best gym I have ever been to. The coaches are the best. They have a wealth of knowledge and take a personal interest in you. They have an excellent understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, always offer advice when asked and sometimes when not, awesome motivators, very friendly and make coming to the gym fun. I look forward to going to class each day because I know I am getting a great workout from some of the best coaches around and have fun doing it.
The community in the gym is very warm and welcoming. Everyone is friendly and take the time to get to know you. There is no arrogance and nobody passes judgement on you. There is no "I am better then you" attitude. You cannot ask for a better place to get a workout, improve your fitness and meet great people.
I have been at The Swamp for 14 months. I love it here and there is no other gym I would want to be at.

With the support of the amazing coaching team and community, I remained fully active during my advanced maternal age pregnancy and welcomed a healthy baby boy at age 46! The doctors were astounded and claimed I was in better shape than most 30 year olds having babies! The Swamp isn’t just a gym, it isn’t just the average CrossFit box, this is a special community committed to well being of its members physically, emotionally, and spiritually. My first ever CrossFit class was October of this year at the Swamp and I am so glad this is the gym I chose to take up CrossFit! Since day 1, the coaches have gone out of their way to make sure I’m using correct form throughout the workouts. They’re also super attentive to adjusting or scaling the workouts based on my personal abilities. I love how the coaches bring so much energy to each class and always push you to be your best!

I came to the Swamp after having my second daughter. I was only looking to loose the baby weight and get back in shape. I got so much more!! I’m way fitter and more confident and have developed more functional fitness!! I thought CrossFit workouts sounded crazy ,but when I actually tried it I was hooked. I'm 46. I have worked out at the SWAMP for a few months now and I feel that the instructors have helped me get into great shape in terms of endurance and strength. I appreciate how flexible the instructors are with allowing me to turn my membership on and off, whenever my work and travel schedule make it so I can't get into the SWAMP. Being in my mid forties, I have a few ailing body parts. My concern about them is why I stayed away from the SWAMP until now. But if you communicate your concerns to the instructors, they are absolutely fantastic about tailoring work outs to push you, not harm you. Finally, I've been working out with my son at the SWAMP, and this exercise experience has been a great way to bond during the challenging teen-age years. If you want to get in shape in a safe and welcoming environment, then I really recommend you check out the SWAMP.

The Swamp is a supportive gym where you can feel welcome, whether you are starting your fitness journey or on the road to compete in CrossFit games. The combination of highly trained coaches, challenging programming (with the ability to scale to any fitness level), and accountability to Just Show Up are what I love most, especially as a military mom parenting through deployments. I've been a member at the Swamp for nearly 5 years and joined when I first moved to the area and never had to even consider any other options. Not only have the coaches provided amazing programming and a great atmosphere that drives you to become more physically fit, but they're supportive of all levels, even if this is your first step towards becoming healthier, stronger, etc.
The Swamp has also become a community of friends, family and everything in between. The coaches and members are some of my closest network in town, but through hard times, even those that haven't even met you will be there for support.

I cannot say enough good things about this community. Everyone is so nice and supportive with the absence of cliques that I’ve experienced at other boxes. The coaches have your best interests at heart and give extremely specific coaching and feedback. As an older member, I always feel seen and treated equally as an athlete. Crossfit isn’t for everyone but for those of us who live it, it is life transforming. And contrary to myth about Crossfit in general, injuries are rare. Been going to the Swamp for 4 years and it has become my second home. It's a great place whether you are an experienced athlete or a beginner. When I started going I hadn't really ever worked out in my life, and it took a lot of time and work, but now can do things I never expected I ever would. Every coach is amazing and quick to recognize your strengths and weaknesses, so they are great at knowing where to push and where to pull back keeping safety as the number one priority. I've been doing CrossFit for over 10 year across the US and have experienced many gyms. When I first moved to Massachusetts in early 2021 amid COVID lockdowns, I wanted to be near a gym that had particular qualities because not all gyms are created equal. I thought that I would give The Swamp my first visit in June/July.
On my first day, Paddy was my coach and he ran the class in a similar format and style, like my former gym in San Diego. What I noticed was that he gives clear directions by demonstrating correct movements with clear examples. Even though I've been doing CrossFit for quite sometime, I'm not 100% perfect and Paddy was there to make sure I move safely and efficiently (which I expect from any coach) by correcting me should I need it. He's been consistent with not just myself, but with all athletes in the gym no matter your background.
An excellent staff is consistent with their coaching practice no matter the skill level of the athlete. Nick, Matt, Mike, Luis, Elysia, and Mike (the owner), have demonstrated this time and time again and this is what quality looks like to me. Each coach has there own coaching personality and combine this with the gym community makes for productive and quality experiences that make me (and others) want to come back for more.
I wrote this review after attending just over one year. Mike and staff have navigated the extreme difficulty of challenges that COVID had bought upon the world. They followed CDC and state/local guidelines to keep the community safe and stopping the virus from spreading. They care so much that they have disinfectant cleaners at each station! They have also been consistent and with clear communication when health policies have changed.
If you're looking for a consistent and healthy lifestyle or looking for a change from your daily routine, I recommend The Swamp. The staff will always be there to accommodate for your needs and background. Just take it a day at a time, show up, and they'll handle the rest. That's why I pay them!
