A nice facility in Needham , friendly people, easy to schedule , a warm pool and my daughter is learning to swim with good technical instruction given and made fun at same time .. Sybil is one of the best instructors and my 5 year old daughter has improved a lot in her swimming skills and is ready to go from glider 3 to Pro1 soon !

Very well run operation, always runs on schedule, and has properly trained and friendly instructors. Occasionally hard to park there and the changing rooms are poorly lit but those are my only criticisms, which are minor.

My granddaughter has had a very positive experience at Goldfish. She was afraid to go in the water and to get her face wet. Back for a second year because of the individual attention she got to improve her fears.

When my son first joined Goldfish Needham, he spent two years stuck at the same level until I requested an assessment from management. Several friends of mine had similar experiences. We eventually left for another swim school.
This summer, we decided to give Goldfish another try since it’s close by and his current school is undergoing renovations. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any improvements. I enrolled him in group lessons, but I noticed little progress and a lack of attention from the instructors. His final lesson this summer was supposed to be two private sessions scheduled back-to-back. Instead, each session started with about 10 minutes wasted as the instructors tried to figure out which lane he should be in, what level he belonged to, and who his private instructor was—even though all of that information was clearly available in my app. I had to step onto the pool deck to help resolve the confusion, and at one point an instructor even argued with me about my son’s level because her clipboard didn’t match what was in the app. Eventually, another staff member confirmed that I was correct.
As a result, I paid $200, but my son only received about 40 minutes of actual instruction out of the 60 I paid for. That was the final straw. I voiced my concerns at the front desk in front of what appeared to be both the location manager and the pool deck supervisor, but neither acknowledged me or attempted to engage. I’m not sure if they truly didn’t hear me, but given the small space, it felt dismissive. No one offered to make up for the lost lesson time caused by their disorganization. The whole experience felt like a rip-off and an example of very poor business practices.
I had hoped that paying a premium for private lessons would lead to a better experience, but it was actually worse than the group classes. Last year, my son had a great private instructor who was highly experienced, so clearly the quality depends entirely on who you get. In my opinion, only experienced instructors should be assigned to private lessons, especially since the cost is more than double the group rate.
Bottom line: If your goal is simply for your child to be comfortable in the water and play around, Goldfish might be fine. But if you care about steady progression, I would not recommend it. They do a poor job of tracking swimmer progress, largely because instructors rotate so frequently. And based on conversations with friends at other locations, this isn’t just a Needham issue—it’s a franchise-wide problem. One friend told me his daughter learned more in two weeks of summer camp than in two years at Goldfish. From my perspective, their strategy seems clear: keep students at the same level as long as possible to maximize revenue, rather than focusing on progress.

A truly terrible experience, completely irresponsible to consumers. My son is just over 3 years old, and after attending class he developed a skin allergy caused by the chlorine in the cleaning water. With the hospital’s medical certificate proving the allergy, I requested a refund. After multiple negotiations with the store’s top manager, they refused to refund, only saying we could come back in a few months and resume classes anytime. Later, when I tried to use the makeup token to attend class, they demanded that I first pay an enrollment fee in order to join again. I told them I had never been informed about an additional fee, and that the situation was caused by my child’s skin allergy to the water quality. But the store manager insisted that consumers are “by default” expected to read their policies themselves. They wouldn’t take responsibility, only referring back to their policy. It’s extremely infuriating — one trap after another. Completely unreasonable.

We've had a positive experience with Goldfish Swim School in Needham. The instructors are kind and knowledgeable, and my child has become more comfortable and confident in the water. We attend class on weekday morning, which I can't recommend enough. There is a small group of staff and students and my child gets a lot of individual attention during this time. All of the adults know her and welcome her upon arrival. She has made great gains since moving to a weekday morning class! We are very happy with the progress our child is making.

This is the only well-promoted swimming pool that is somewhat budget-friendly and accepts young children, and I have to say—it was a mistake to come here even once. There are plenty of reasons for this, which I’ll explain below, but if you have the option, I highly recommend looking for something better.
We’ve been attending for eight months now, and if it weren’t for my child’s love of water, we would have quit a long time ago. On our first visit, we were given no guidance whatsoever. When we approached the staff to ask what to do, they simply pointed us to our lane and that was it. No introduction, no information—nothing. It seems like they expect you to figure everything out on your own, from finding the lanes to the locker rooms and showers.
The final straw for us was when they changed our class time without informing us. When we asked what was going on, the staff at the front desk apologized—but what good does that do for us?
Parking is a nightmare; there are never any spots available. Once you get inside, you realize there are no proper changing rooms. Just last week, my husband asked where he could change, and the staff told him, “In the restroom.” He pointed out that there was no light in there, and their response? “Use the flashlight on your phone.” Seriously? Is this the kind of service we’re paying for?
I cannot recommend this pool to anyone. In fact, when I asked friends which swimming schools they take their kids to, many mentioned Goldfish as a terrible experience from their past. The moment they switched to a different school, their children actually started learning how to swim. And I heard this from more than just one or two people.
If it weren’t for the awful customer service and dismissive attitude, we might have considered staying. But with constant instructor changes, schedule shifts without notice, no parking, and no proper facilities—this is absolutely not what we signed up for.

This is a great place for a little kid to start learning swimming. Warm water temperature and friendly teachers are definitely plus. I love their flexible schedules and makeup class options. One thing to be aware of is they use the short side of the pool for lower level classes, which actually works great for little kids. However, if you’re looking for a swimming class for a big kid, this may not be the best place due to this reason.

My son has been thriving in his swim class. He absolutely enjoys it. The swim teachers are great. Very patient. I picked goldfish because of their flexibility in the swim lesson hours. I wasn’t able to make my sons lessons at the YMCA due to my work hours, so I took him out and found goldfish. So happy I did.

My 4 year old loves being in the water and never wants to get out at the end of his 30 min lesson. He’s a better swimmer than his older brothers were at his age, thanks to Goldfish! Most beneficial when the teacher is consistent and can build on his skills and focus on what he needs to work on. Harder to do when teachers have been inconsistent in the past. Very happy overall as swimming is an important life skill!

After two years of swimming lessons, my son still had a phobia of swimming, and I felt nothing had been achieved. I had enough and decided to stop his classes there. I then enrolled him in a different program, and within one month, he was able to swim, jump into the water, and even swim backwards. I do not recommend the Goldfish!

I’ll start with the positives: The facility is great and pool is warm. My kids (5 and 3) got comfortable in the water and had fun at lessons. They also learned to put their face under water. The management and customer service is great.
Cons: in my experience there was very little consistency. Teachers were often absent and there were always subs. In turn, this means the teacher never knew what my kids could or couldn’t do! Also, my kids take a while to warm up to people so sometimes my 3 year old would spend the whole lesson crying because it wasn’t a teacher he knew. There was also rarely the same kids in a lesson. Sometimes there would be 2 kids (which was awesome) whereas other times there were 4.
While my kids got comfortable and enjoyed the water at goldfish, that was the progress they made (which is definitely step 1). They also learned to put their face under water. However, they certainly did not learn to swim here after many lessons. The teachers held on to them all the time and didn’t have them take risks. I started my 5 year old somewhere else and she’s swimming independently after a few lessons. At goldfish there was no independence. Maybe it’s because there were always different teachers and they didn’t know what the kids were working on?
I expressed my concerns to management and they were very responsive and helpful.
Overall, I recommend goldfish for getting comfortable with the water. My goal was for my kids (especially my 5 year old) yo be comfortable, to learn how to be safe in the water , and swim independently. This was not accomplished at goldfish for us.

We found the facility to be somewhat dirty and the class that we attended was disorganized and poorly run with absolutely no one-on-one instruction. The bigger issue is their poor customer service and unethical billing practices. I intended to sign up for and pay for classes as I went, and my receipt reflected that. Evidently they operate on a subscription model and when you go to your first class they will present a liability waiver and somewhere in there it says that you are subscribing to $140 per month of classes and they will charge your card automatically. This was never told to me on their website, my email confirmation, my receipt, or in person. Although they know that this was never explained to me, they refused to refund me and only offered a credit for future classes. Fortunately my credit card company agreed that this is a fraudulent way to extract money from a customer. If their billing practices are this sketchy, I shudder to think about their safety protocols. We will not be returning.

Really disappointed in the staff. Each week there’s been a different instructor for my 2-year old and I have to specifically ask for the instructor she feels comfortable with. Today she was assigned an instructor who spoke about her finals and how much work she has to do this week. Keep in mind I was sitting on the bench and this was her conversation with a TWO-YEAR OLD. She then asked my child old how her week is going and didn’t smile or try to be cheerful at all. My toddler cried the whole time.

Facility is cute but I think that’s the only draw. Teachers are very young, and while they do know how to swim they don’t know how to work with small children and all the emotional needs/fears that go along with swimming. Classes were 30 mins but there were at least 3 children to one teacher which meant my child only got like 15 mins of actual “swim time.” Needless to say my child didn’t learn to swim this summer at goldfish swim.

I cannot say enough good things about our experience with Goldfish Swim School in Needham. All three of my children LOVE coming each week. While I’m always impressed by the quality of the facility, the organization of classes, and the progress my children have made, it’s much more than that to us. The kindness, warmth, and genuine interest each staff member has offered our family is something I can’t thank them enough for. This place used to be 5 stars a few years ago but has slipped a bit. Still is a nice place for your children to learn how to swim. Staff is less diligent ensuring classes begin on time and parents need to bring children to swim lanes themselves when they aren’t paying attention. Front desk support / management help is inconsistent.

Bottom line, there's very little accountability here -- I guess that's the downside to an establishment where there's never anyone over the age of 25 on premises.
We wanted to attend a family swim session today so my son could practice treading water before a swim test at summer camp. After the Goldfish team conveyed incomplete information about how we could register for the family swim, they agreed to let us attend given that the mistake was on their end and we'd been good, long-time customers (4+ years, birthday parties, etc.). After we'd been there for 15 minutes, one of the lifeguards informed us that time was up, at which point I asked if we could stay a little longer and they agreed. The manager, Abby, came back almost immediately and asked us to leave, intimating that we were trespassing. When I asked why we had to leave, she accused me of telling the lifeguard moments earlier that I was refusing to leave the pool area, and that my son's presence in the pool was making the lifeguard team uncomfortable, since the pool's occupancy was one person over their internal guidelines. Meanwhile, there were 3-4 lifeguards for about 25 people at the pool, not all of whom were even IN the pool.
If our original agreement had been clear upfront that we only had 15 minutes and that that was a hard-stop, the situation would've been more understandable. Instead, Abby originally conveyed that they were flexible around the situation and then turned around and sought to enforce a strict time limit, which obviously created an unpleasant situation that was anything but flexible or customer-friendly. So to my initial point about accountability, if they make a mistake, don't expect them to fix it -- they'll probably respond by throwing you out of the pool.

It was a frustrating experience we had with their management. I emailed them, called them, left a note at the front desk for them but it took them longer than a month to return back. And finally when they returned I asked if they could give me a phone call to discuss my concern they never did, until I wrote a review for them.
My concern was about having a different instructor almost every time. My child has special needs, and they have a program at Goldfish to support their students with special needs. But with changing teachers every week and them not reading the notes about my child, we were starting from scratch every time so no progress (and I believe this would be the case for a child with no special needs as well).
I think same people also own the Burlington location of Goldfish. We had an amazing experience there, so I cannot generalize my experience with Needham location to other locations, their staff at Burlington were amazing, really helpful, and we had more consistency with the teachers.

Update:
I was contacted by the team and have subsequently registered our little man for classes. We’ve been to a few and he loves it.
This feedback is as a prospective customer.
It's been over a week since I contacted you folks, via email, phone and your online website form to obtain some more information before signing up? If this the standard level of response time and service your customers receive then I'm glad i haven't signed up yet.
If you're going through a busy patch and are understaffed then I understand, but I'd recommend you do a better job of communicating this to your existing and potential customers.

I agree with Lois, the instructors are great and management needs to improve. When I had an issue with registration, the employee on the phone just kept repeating the corporate policy. After leaving three messages for the GM asking her to call me back I eventually received an email saying, "I understand you've been trying to reach me.
What can I do for you?" I asked her to call me to discuss the issue, but never heard from her again.

I give our teacher 5 star and the management 0.
The pool has a problem for the 2nd time in a month and our class is canceled for the 2nd time in a month.
They first promised us free family swim when we paid month to month then after a while told us we have to pay for a half-year membership to have free family swim.
We paid half-year membership then got rejected for 4 or 5 times for family swim because it is too “popular”. I asked for a refund since half-year membership doesn’t give us anything more than month-to-month but was told no refund.
They ask me to send an email on Sunday morning to register for family swim to guarantee spots. I sent my email precisely at 9 am and got the reply “You unfortunately fall beyond the 50 spots.”
There’s never a lesson available for the time slot we want. I have put my kid onto two waiting lists but never a spot available.
Then they decided that my kid should be transferred to another class. We requested the same teacher who is the only reason that we stay with this school and was told that class is also waitlisted.
The above mentioned are simple facts and the responses are always “sorry” without any action to do the work right.
I stopped trying after I was told “I was unfortunately falling beyond the 50 spots”. The management team messed things up in every way they could. The last time we came to class the students reduced to half. I’m not surprised.

I have continued to be impressed with the level of service and the care that the instructors put into teaching and nurturing little kids into being confident swimmers. Such patient and kind instructors!! I’ve watched my daughter move from being frantic and not wanting to enter the water without me to now, 3 years after, being such a strong swimmer for her group and age.
The facility is extremely clean, the temperature in the pool is kept warm, there is consistent email notification about just about any information needed such as pool temperatures, upcoming monthly schedules. They even alert you when your regular instructor is out and offer you the name of the alternate. This has proven to be very useful for me as my daughter sometimes does not easily adhere to change. So I get to prepare her before I arrive to the facility. Overall, I am very happy and would highly recommend this swim school to any parent who has little ones who need to learn to swim.
A plus- the parents get to sit in comfort and watch their little ones swim! You will not be disappointed.

We had one class at this facility and I am sceptical about coming again. The pool is not clean: the side of the pool under the main entrance was dirty, it had a blackish stain, almost like black mold. I touched it with my hand to see if that's something on the top, but nope, that dirt seemed to be there for quite a while. It was the mini 1 area of the pool. I'm really scared now if my little one gets any disease there. The rest of the amenities seemed clean but the pool and the water is my biggest concern now. I'd like to address it to the site manager so they fix it. The location is really nice and so seems to be the staff, but they need to fix the main area which is the pool, and make it clean so people are not scared to keep coming there!

I truly feel my daughter is part of this bigger swim family!! It’s not just learning a survival skill! It’s also the social interactions and the trust that is being built!! And also the confidence that my little girl has!!! It’s all thanks to the great team at needham goldfish swim! Everyone greets my daughter by name from the moment we step foot into the building!! He management team truly cares about the kids ! And the swim teachers are amazing in how they know to give your kid the jump start to feeling more and more comfortable in the pool!! I can’t wait to bring my youngest daughter once she is of age!!

It is very expensive for 30 min session 4 times a month. 5 kids per instructor and half of the time, instructor wastes time with talking to kids in water and 5 min is really spent on teaching your kid. It is not worth money.

Charged extra $25 every month for registration. They also cancel classes so you cannot make up. They say they deduct from the fee, but they do not do that. It is also too expensive and 4 or 5 kids per instructor which is literally less than 10 min spent for your child. It is said 30 min session but it is really 27 mins. So, not worth it. Many people left this place.

We have been really happy with our daughter's teachers at Goldfish - especially Bella, Georgia and Natalie. She has come along way with her safety and comfort in the water because of her classes there.

District Director Martha continues to be amazing w/personal attention. New Needham location manager Jeff seems great too-- helped me place my 4Y son who has some special needs-- it's so wonderful that he can now swim w/other kids in group classes after seeing his older 6Y sister swim at Goldfish for years. Front office staff continues to be patient and enthusiastic. Only remaining gripe is difficult to schedule makeup-- hopefully they are making it easier online!

My son loves here and the environment is quite child-friendly. There is a play area for little ones. It’s a must-have for persons like me having to bring younger siblings to attend swimming classes too. Sometimes it’s a little bit crowded especially on weekends.

I like how organized everything is from lining up before going into the pool to the last 5 minutes to discuss progress before exiting the pool. The instructors are great and I love the progress reports. For the amount of people who come through it never feels chaotic. Everything seems to flow the way it should. Great experience overall!

My son is 3 years old and started about a month and a half, and at first was afraid of the water. Today, he is waiting for his swim lessons and making progress. Thanks to the great teachers and team. Thank you very much.

They have an excellent facility and teachers and are very engaged in teaching swimming, which is obviously why we bring our kids.
That being said, scheduling lessons as they graduate levels (which happens a lot) can be tricky since they’re so popular. But really the biggest challenge is their cancellation policy. You have to cancel one month in advance and you have to fill out paper work in person! It’s almost like dealing with Comcast or Verizon..why is canceling swimming lessons this hard? I get it, they need to retain customers. But this kind of policy makes me not want to go to another branch when we move towns.
Edit to respond to Carlos
My issue is not with your makeup policy, it’s with your cancellation policy. This kind of slippery response makes it feel like I’m dealing with a mega corporation, Carlos. It really shouldn’t be this hard for people to leave Goldfish.

Everyone is very friendly and my son seems to have a lot of fun in the pool. I like the small class sizes; low student-teacher ratio, warm pool, and spacious watching area with high chairs and entertainment for siblings. The facility feels well designed to teach children to swim and the instructors all seem great so far

Awesome. Goldfish got my toddler floating on his back and kicking faster than I ever could. Instructors manage to build great rapport with my ultra-shy kid and seem really engaged in his learning. Great progress reports, well-organized and a fun location. Well all really look forward to swim lessons!

The place is excellent for teaching kids to swim. Classes start at the age of 6 month (with parent participation). Everything is done to make the place as kid-friendly as possible. Pool water is kept at 90F!

The absolute best place to take swim lessons in metro west. They couldn't make it easier unless they actually picked up my kids at our house and took them for me. The instructors are fabulous. Management is so helpful. The facility is cheerful and clean. Most importantly, my kids are happy and learning to swim.
