One of the worst gyms for talking to staff members in any gym I have ever gone to. and I travel for work. multiple employees with bad attitudes or rude postures when talking about paying or anything just not a fluke but constantly one imperticualrly lied about himself even his name and who he is guys name is Dennis would try arguing with me since the equipment isn't bolted to the ground I would use chalk and say its dangerous. would check out other gyms

Instant Yes – I Found My Gym

From the moment I walked in, I knew this was it. I originally planned to sign up for just one month to try it out - but after the tour, the atmosphere, and the energy of the people, I signed up for six months on the spot.

Special shoutout to Grace at the front desk who gave me the tour - she was warm, welcoming, and made me feel like I already belonged here. She’s absolutely one of the reasons I committed right away.

Mike’s Fitness is the perfect blend of cool, down-to-earth, and community-driven. Everyone here takes their fitness seriously, but no one takes themselves too seriously. It’s inclusive, alive, and full of good energy.

If you’re looking for a gym with soul - not just machines and mirrors - this is it.

Good gym overall, but it gets uncomfortably hot and humid in the summer since the AC is rarely on. It makes it tough to get a proper workout in. Hoping management addresses this, it would really improve the experience.

Gym side is fantastic

Fighter traveling through Europe - coach arranged training at Mike's with a personal session daily along with gym access + classes.

Everything was arranged well in advance, confirmed one week before arriving in town.

Get to the gym and they have no idea they had anything set up. Mike not on location. Mike's mother runs the front desk, love seeing family working together. She is unfortunately quite old and unsure of what is going on. A normal 30 second process of getting checked in turned into around 45 minutes. Somehow they found someone that could do a private session, she gave me a price and wound up charging me double. Bought some shirts to take home to the boys and her tallying of prices was done long hand addition on a scrap of paper taking over 5 minutes.

Wound up training at a different gym the duration of our trip in Amsterdam.

Gym side seemed pretty great, but if you are a fighter coming into town looking for a solid and professional experience go elsewhere.

It’s the best gym in Boston - without hesitation. I think it’s due to management. Omar, manager, does a great job and treats everyone with respect. You cannot go

I am an active person, and I love working out, but I often feel uncomfortable in gyms. In the six months since I joined, that’s never been the case at Mike’s. This place is a community. It doesn’t feel competitive or judgy. There are people of all builds and abilities, and when I had a trainer (shout out to Coach Adam!) he respected me and always encouraged me to listen to my body. I also like that the rooms are well organized by focus and the big windows and high ceilings make it feel spacious and not stinky. They have any kind of equipment I’ve ever wanted or needed to use and I rarely have to wait to use it. I love going to work out here, love what it’s done for my body, and love the people I’ve met while getting stronger after a couple of surgeries derailed my fitness for a while. Mike’s is a treasure.

This place is alright. A no frills neighborhood gym that gets the job done. The owner is nice, the folks you email with are helpful and solves issues.

1. But — forget about the front desk folks — specifically the young man who sits there after 6pm — knows nothing, in a hurry to say off tangent things all over the place instead of listening to what you’re actually asking about, and defensively says things like, “I don’t care what the email says…” while you’re not even done with what you’re asking about and then contradicts himself saying “we are easy to talk to”?!? And the older man who just sits there and watches his shows.
2. They promote their phone app — but it sucks and doesn’t really serve much purpose. e.g. I already have memberships—but when I click on my app under my memberships, it shows nothing about my own membership; it shows the memberships that they’re currently selling.
3. When I first came to the gym, I told them it’s my first time and I asked where I’m supposed to go. The front desk elderly man just pointed to one side of the gym and went back to watch his show on his phone.

Basically they take ‘no one will bother you’ to the next level. No one who works there actually bothers to know about the memberships they sell or anything at all! No one knows anything but the owner and whoever answers the email. Lol.

I still go because this is the nearest gym facility near me. I suppose the area is ripe for competition or I hope this place gets bought out under new management or something.

Very disappointing, came to the gym to take a tour and workout, was told no and must purchase a $15 day pass. In 20 years of checking out new gyms when moving to a new neighborhood, I have never been told you had to pay to try out a new gym for one time. Easy decision to never come back. I had heard it was friendlier in this part of Boston. Clearly not the case.

Awesome gym. They have everything and each room is broken up by body part which is helpful (ex: sections for legs, arms, squatting, benching, stretching).
Good amount of cardio equipment. Older and newer weightlifting equipment and machines. Really enjoyed my workout here - good vibes and friendly members.

The women’s locker room has showers with soap and a nice sauna. Plenty of lockers to store your things.
I went for a day pass as I was visiting a friend who lives nearby - price was $15. I thought it was worth it for a good workout

Nice local gym. A little shabby, but there is everything you need for training, and it's pretty big as well. The best thing - they do not have contract, enrollment fees, commitment fees, annual fees and any other hidden fees. The price you see is the price you pay. And if you wanna make a brake, you're just stop paying, and that's it. Pretty honest policy, in my opinion, which is a rare good nowadays.

Mostly a good gym with a positive environment. My biggest complaint is that the staff during weeknights turns off the music and the HVAC 30 minutes before closing and it becomes very stuffy and uncomfortable.

Update: The air conditioning is either broken or just turned off. Quite unpleasant during one of the hottest summers in recent memory. Also, it takes them months to fix or replace broken equipment.

I've exercised at a lot of fitness facilities in Boston. I live far away, visit the city, JP, often and am always day visiting fitness centers. I've been in none better than Mikes. Big facility with a huge array of impeccably maintained equipment. Squeaky clean. Great, welcoming staff (Mike, not the owner). Plenty of parking, ,convenient to the Orange Line. Not a bad word to say. I'll be back whenever I'm in town.

Oh, and I dropped my credit card while changing. Some kind, honest soul turned it in and Mike came to find me and return it. Can't say enough good stuff about Mike's.

Heard promising things only to show up and be disappointed. Equipment was fairly limited and weights were scattered and disorganized throughout the gym. Did not appear to be very sanitary as roughly have of the gym goers did not wipe down equipment after using it.

Given the poor etiquette and sanitation standards with the $15 day pass or $60/month membership, your time and money would be better spent at Planet Fitness.

Decent gym overall, with plenty of equipment and space. My issue with them is that the gym can get very hot during the Summer, and they rarely turn the AC on. If that is ok with you, you will likely enjoy the gym. But if you're like me, and you cannot work out in a space that is humid and 75+ degrees, then you will not enjoy it as much.

Although they have been in business for 35 Years (they mention that), they are not great. I kept trying to reach them to schedule an appointment for a"Fitness Test" which seems to be mandatory to join the gym. The lady in charge of the process never answers calls, nor replies to emails and not returning voice mails. Also, went to the gym twice in-person to enroll but was told to reach to the same person over email or call. Extremely unprofessional and worst communication. Would not recommend.

Update: Reply to the comment; I went in person TWICE. How difficult is it to revert in person??? That's BS.

I lived in JP for about a year and I really miss Mikes Fitness. I’ve been a member of a lot of gyms but Mikes is truly a 10/10 gym and worth every cent (very reasonably priced). First, the space itself is beautiful and has high ceilings and great light. Second, there are tons of machines and weights and they’re sorted by muscle group for easy reps. Finally, super friendly staff and great location. I still wear my hoodie with pride.

Amazing local gym with cool facilities and nice people!

I’ve been going to Mike’s for about 8 months now and I have nothing but good things to say. I am glad to see several other reviewers comments on the inclusive, community feel that the gym has. Staff and other members are generally very friendly and supportive and there is no feeling of judgement.

Much of the equipment has been replaced recently (new treadmills/ellipticals/bikes in Fall 2019). The layout of the building is odd but adds to the charm of supporting a local gym. Encourage anyone interested to go check it out - staff is always willing to give a tour!

I have tried to get a hold for literally months with the people in charge to set up the assessment and 12 week transformation program. The staff on the phone is sterile borderline rude and again it is impossible to get a hold of anyone so that I can become a member... I live very close and I wanted to be local but clearly they don`t need/want my money so I will have to go to one the chains against my will!

Great place to lift. EDIT: Days after my review, I was told Mike’s is reconfiguring the gym to increase the space for lifters and adding new lifting equipment. Wonderful timing. Additionally, let me tell you about it’s members: I left a pair of metal lifting J-Hook straps, and when I returned the next day to lift, the instant I walked in the weight room a lifter told me that they were exactly where I left them. I am new, few people know me, and this gentleman and I had never met. Unbelievable! I hadn’t realized I had even forgotten them! The same “small town” atmosphere as I just left in Georgia, which I didn’t expect. Great people! It is busier in the evenings, and the other lifters are great about sharing equipment, but just leave a personal item on the equipment your using so a newbie doesn’t unknowingly take it from you when you take a breath-catching walk around or when you get a paper towel. LOL. Awesome gym...they listen!

Pros: 2 minute walk from house. No contract, usually have deals.

Cons: physical layout. Difficult to do an efficient dynamic work out or circuit. Have weight machines separated in different rooms by body part you want to work. Fine if your into super setting I guess. Limited amount of trainers, and when you get one at the times you need they change times or leave. Scheduling for trainer is difficult for there is one person whom does the scheduling and they don’t always get back to you. Could be cleaner.

Really had high hopes for this place. I don’t need fancy gyms, prefer smaller ones like this. But, they need to rethink layout and equipment!
