This gym is great, and I wish I could go more. I have been to other ymca's that were really sub-par, but this gym is clean, easy to navigate, and has a large variety of options. Also the sauna is great and when I take my son too the family restroom it is very safe and clean.
I stopped my membership for awhile and had to come back because it is a nice gym and during the winter it's a must. I edited to a 5 star because it is pricey but you get what you pay for. I just wish the child watch was open for people who are working a 8-5 job full time.

20251002 from time to time, there are some unpleasant smell in the steam room or sauna. It would be nice to know how often there are cleaned. There is some foul smell seeming coming up from the hallway drain hole outside of the steam room.
20250730 finally both steam room and sauna working normally.
20250625 wed men's steam room not working.
20250621 Men's steam has been acting up for a few weeks now and smells terrible.

We enrolled our 3-year-old son, in the Stage 1 swimming class at YMCA Waltham and unfortunately had a very concerning experience.
From the start, the coaching approach by the main instructor was not supportive of his emotional and developmental needs. He was often overlooked, and when he cried or became upset, the responses lacked empathy and patience. At times, he even received judgmental looks instead of reassurance.
One incident that really upset us was when he accidentally fell into the pool during class, and the coach at the time showed little attentiveness or constructive feedback afterward. Ignoring a young child when he is struggling only adds to their fear, and it was disheartening to witness.
Thankfully, on the second day, Coach Max stepped in and completely changed our sonβs experience. His patience, kindness, and understanding helped him feel safer and more confident. Coach Max showed exactly the level of care and empathy that we believe is essential when working with young children. We are truly grateful for his support and would love to recognize him further for his outstanding efforts.
We hope YMCA Waltham takes this feedback seriously and ensures more thoughtful, inclusive coaching for all children.

π‘!π€― I can't even believe that a YMCAA "FAMILY PROJECT" started back in the 1850s (yes 1800's in England) is now charging an individual $70 of month & if you're over the age of 60 π€¬ $60. a mth for a gym membership! For a senior citizen on a fixed income to wanna stay in shape, $60 a month is ridiculous, Captain Thomas Sullivan Is the rolling over in his grave right now! I CANNOT believe this fundamental cornerstone of πΊπΈ history is charging! How is ANYONE on a fixed income able to spend $60 a month & THEN the "family" Mem. is $120.00 there's no family I know that can afford an extra $120 a month to be able to bring their children swimming/ activities! That's what people pay for their electricity BILL not their gym membershipπ€― This place is supposed to be funded through grants & FUNDING being able to make it affordable for the average person planet fitness π€¬ some of these other crapy gym mem. are popping up at $15 a month YET the YMCA is $60. A month π€― not a year ON TOP OF ANOTHER $25 just to sign up!?! Where are these prices coming from? I am so saddened to hear that, JUST PITIFUL!

Been a regular for a while and most stuff is great, but the men's saunas are seriously gross. They stink horribly! You guys gotta clean them better, even with all the sweat.
Also, the naked dudes in the sauna are just not cool. It's inappropriate and kinda nasty. People should have to wear towels or something.
And the showers with no dividers? Seriously? A little privacy would be nice.
These are the main things bugging me in the men's area and I hope you can get them sorted out. Thanks!

Itβs a Y, not a fancy gym, and itβs a middle of the road Y at that. Temper your expectations. Iβve been to much bigger and nicer Ys and some that are worse. It does have an indoor and an outdoor pool which is nice and on the plus side the dues are reasonable.
The employees are mostly nice. A few appear bothered when you ask a question or need assistance.
Patrons are a mixed bag. Usually, there is at least one person listening to music without headphones or screaming into their cell phone trying to have a conversation on a treadmill or elliptical in the cardio room. This is technically not allowed, but the facility refuses to put up signs. The last excuse I was given is that patrons donβt read our signs so there is no need for one. It funny because they put up a ton of other signs and advertisements just not a sign saying talking on cell phones or listening to music without headphones is not permitted in the cardio room. Perhaps they could also mention the rules during each patrons first visit? Workers are generally quite put out when asked to tell someone to stop screaming into their phone.
They generally keep the facility clean but some areas do smell bad off and on. I can only speak for the menβs locker room, but I highly recommend foot wear at all times in there. It amazes me how many patrons walk bare footed on those highly used and dirty floors, it is very gross!
The equipment is in decent shape overall but when a piece goes down it can be down for some time.
If you are a treadmill user note that some genius decided to take out a couple of treadmills a year or so ago and squeeze in other equipment that is hardly ever used. I run 4-5 days a week and must wait for a treadmill about twice as week since the change. Luckily itβs usually 10 minutes or less. They were busy before the change but there was usually 1 or 2 open. The new equipment is not in use almost every time I visit no matter the time of day.
This Y is close to home and cheap, so I overlook its various short comings. The location is also a member of the national network, so your membership gets you into other Ys when traveling. Iβve visited some fantastic locations on trips. If it wasnβt so convenient, Iβd likely be going elsewhere.

No on was there to open at 5:30 again. Been a member less than 60 days and this is a handful of times now. Iβll be cancelling as soon as I find another gym. Check out the pic.
The menβs locker room smells of urine and is clearly not maintained regularly. Look at the pictures of poo! All of these photos were taken different days and right at opening.
No one enforces wiping down equipment which means you get to bask in the glory of othersβ sweat and germs.
The basketballs are constantly deflated and the best they can do is offer you a pump. It took contacting via the website to finally have them inflated.
There are not enough weight plates, especially the 45βs
In the last month there have been more than once where the place isnβt open because someone is not there early enough to open. No apologies, no credit given. Nothing. When the hours changed for construction, no credit given, either. You change your hours and it eliminates the gym as a possibility for those of us who donβt have the schedule to move around.

I was disappointed with my recent experience at the YMCA Center. The facility closed on weekends without any prior notice, causing several cars, including ours, to turn around. This was the second time we encountered such an issue, despite our infrequent visits. Additionally, the locker rooms for the outdoor pool were closed, leaving only one combined locker room with an open shower space available for both men and women.
Be aware that membership fees are charged automatically on a monthly basis. When we attempted to cancel our membership, we were informed that a 15-day notice in writing is required. This lack of flexibility and communication is something potential members should consider before joining.

The swim class was poorly managed. There was a lack of consistent instruction, with three different instructors over the course of four sessions and no clear communication about backup plans. In the last class, the backup instructor's role seemed minimal; she merely kept track of the time and repeatedly announced the remaining minutes without engaging in actual teaching. She was covering two classes simultaneously and showed little interest in the students since she wouldnβt be seeing them again. My child was left unattended for 15 minutes, shaking from inactivity in the cold water, while another child was crying for attention. This was a deeply disappointing experience.
Additionally, they donβt open at their scheduled time, leaving people waiting outside and wasting their time.

No hair dryer, no swimsuit cleanerβthis branch is a joke and lowers the reputation of the YMCA. You have to walk out with a wet suit and hair on a rainy day. I got a cold because of this. The whole experience at this YMCA branch is awful compared to other branches. The team coordination is chaotic. I signed up for swim lessons, and no one told me that they were canceled! The guy at the front desk just let me sign up!! When I drove there, the whole facility was closed. The manager said they would reach out to me for a refund, but no one ever contacted me!!
When I finally had the class, I found that the womenβs changing room didnβt have a hair dryer, and this issue has been there for a long time! The swimsuit cleaner was also out of order. The whole facility management is a mess.
However, those awful experience is not the worst part. When I reported these issues, the people at the front desk asked me to contact the facility manager myself, and they were not sure if the issues would be taken care of. I have to reach out myself as a customer?????? because the front desk only handles memberships?????? What a joke.
They robbed your money and donβt address any serious management issues.

We belong to a different Y as our primary membership and love it. Last summer we had a couple bad experiences at the Waltham Y outdoor pool but decided to give it another chance this summer since it comes with our membership. What a mistake! If you want your children in tears at the pool, this is the spot for you. The lifeguards are absolutely AWFUL! Their rules are different than what is posted on the sign at the entrance, and they seem to just enjoy giving people a hard time, no exceptions. My daughter is 6.5 and attended 3 YMCA camps this summer and swim lessons for the last several years at the Y. She can swim independently and has taken multiple swim tests at the reading Y and passed. The lifeguard in Waltham made up random requirements for the test and ended up failing my daughter after much anxiety at having to even take the test again. Tears ensued to which the guard said "I don't make the rules." Very confusing as she was compliant with the posted signage. Speaking to the head guard, useless. I totally understand water safety, my kids are all in lessons, but having one of 3 kids restricted in the pool for no real reason was very stressful and pretty much ruined our day. Overall, just a very unpleasant experience with lifeguards on a power trip. It was the same last summer with different scenarios. We will be going to the Stoneham boys and girls club for the remainder of the summer--now this place is great! And an awesome splash pad as well. Boo on you Waltham YMCA.

NO SHOW EMAILS FROM THE WALTHAM YMCA. I go to other YMCAs in the area and no other Y is as unresponsive and and punitive as the YMCA in Waltham. I drove 25 minutes to the tai chi class today. Checked-in on my phone App. Found out that the substitute was teaching yoga. So I left, spending a wasted roundtrip of 50 minutes. I then get this 'no show' warning email from Waltham Y. Very frustrating and not very helpful.

In general I like YMCA Waltham a lot. People who work there is very nice and helpful. I mostly use the pool. The looker room is clean, showers are clean and work well. There is also sauna and a steam room, both work well and clean. The pool schedule is organized the way which allow to swim laps almost all the time and that is very convenient. Normally it is no more than two people on lane. The price is also lower than in the pool which is nearby.

Giving four stars instead of five for two reasons. First, the music that was being played LOUD in the pool area was highly offensive rap music. Second, the lap swimming hours are totally unfair for those who swim laps. Otherwise it's a good ymca.

Disappointing Experience with Aquatics Program at YMCA in Waltham
My recent experience with the aquatics program at YMCA in Waltham has been extremely disappointing due to poor management and lack of communication.
Twice now, my child and I have arrived for swimming classes only to find that the instructor failed to show up. This left the remaining instructors with an overwhelming number of students, far beyond the recommended limit. Not only does this compromise the quality of instruction, but it also raises serious safety concerns for the children involved.
Whatβs even more frustrating is the complete lack of support from management. There are no additional instructors available to help in such situations, and it seems there is no plan in place to prevent these occurrences or to handle them effectively when they do happen.
Furthermore, there is a complete absence of communication from the management regarding cancellations or changes to the schedule. There have been instances where classes were canceled without any prior notification via phone call or email, leaving parents and students confused and inconvenienced.
Itβs unclear whether there are re-training courses for instructors scheduled in advance or if they are arranged hastily as a response to these incidents. Regardless, the lack of transparency and communication only adds to the frustration and dissatisfaction with the program.
Overall, my experience with the aquatics program at YMCA in Waltham has been subpar, to say the least. I hope that the management takes these concerns seriously and implements necessary changes to improve the programβs efficiency, communication, and overall quality of instruction.
I would caution other parents considering enrolling their children in this program to carefully weigh their options and consider alternative aquatics programs with better management and communication practices.

Management is terrible at this location. I accidentally signed up for a membership while signing my son up for swim lessons. This was my mistake and when I reached out to ask for a refund, Melissa repeatedly told me that I should, βdo a better job taking care of my financesβ and told me it was βimpossible to sign up for a membership online and not be aware.β Not only was she completely disrespectful, but to essentially call me a liar was absolutely unprofessional. There were many ways she could have handled this, but the fact that she went to insulting me is absolutely unforgivable. YMCA- look into training your management teams. You have lost a good customer now.

I am a new YMCA member in the last few months. I primarily do their workout classes and have truly enjoyed all of them so much. From Barre, to HITT, to Total Body Conditioning, they are all an excellent workout. As I have attended more classes, I have started to prefer various instructor styles over others but I have not taken one class that I didn't feel like I got a great workout! I am also new to the area and have also met so many new people at classes and have even exchanged a few phone numbers of people in the area. I have already convinced one friend to join with me!

REVIEW FOR SWIM LESSONS:
Mr. Jeff is the best swim teacher! He's loved by both parents and children! We previously went to Goldfish Swim School and I didn't feel like my son learned very much because every single class was the same exact thing over and over again...very boring. At the YMCA, every single class feels different and they all incorporate various fun and creative methods that teach the basics of swimming and safety skills. My child has learned more at the YMCA in 4 classes than he did out of the 1.5 years we were at Goldfish Swim School! As a parent of a toddler in Mr. Jeff's class, my favorite part is seeing the constant smiles and joy on my son's face as he's discovering his new ability to swim!

Have been utilizing the outdoor pool in these warmer summer days. Weekdays are lovely and not terribly busy, even with the camps. On a very hot summer Saturday it was, of course, busier; however, there was always some space to float around and adult swim every hour for fifteen minutes.

YMCA in Greater Boston, especially the Waltham facility has a wonderful property and buildings, indoor and outdoor (seasonal) pool and good variety of programs. Staff is friendly, helpful, positive. Members who go there have a nice sense of community. Price is reasonable for all that they offer.

Great facility. Get great workouts in without feeling judged. They deserve 5 stars but the only negative I have to add is that there's alot of people, young adults/kids that goof off a little.

Pros: outdoor pool, Never a wait for equipment in the evening, low cost membership.
Cons: Locker rooms basic, outdoor pool ones are terrible. Very little space to lie on a mat and do floor exercises.
Update: they got rid of the car-scraping speed bumps, hooray!!

I just started taking group swimming lesson at Waltham Y. The facility is clean, not too crowded.
My swim instructor is Adam. He is fantastic. He is really good at breaking down the strokes, suggesting drills to each individual's needs to get comfortable with the strokes. He is patient and is able to give us individual attention despite being in a group setting. He has a calm demeanor which instills confidence as you try to learn to swim as an adult.

We frequently take my 6 year old swimming, but he never seems to progress in his swimming ability. After only 5 weeks of swim class at the YMCA, he is gaining confidence in the water, is swimming more independently, and is more comfortable going under water. He also loves his teachers and the class!

The Y is clean and perfect for my needs. Instructors are friendly. Great treadmills where you can choose to walk or run in beautiful places in the world. Today I hiked in Utah.

The Waltham YMCA offers a variety of group exercise classes that will appeal to all age groups and the instructors that I have had classes with are extremely good and accommodating to members at every level of activity. They are engaging and the classes are fun for everyone!
