The gym itself is well-equipped and visually appealing, but unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The front desk staff tends to be unfriendly, and the Fitness Director, Jon Mack, comes across as unapproachable and rigid. Membership fees are extremely high, and the quality of the equipment doesn’t justify the cost. Additionally, there’s a recurring issue with older male members making young women uncomfortable while they try to work out. something that really needs to be addressed

Genuinely please do not come to this gym. My boyfriend and I have gone here for about a year now and have had the worst interactions. Just to set the scene, it is a norm for people to steal out of lockers. There are several accounts of theft and no action to combat that. The staff doesn’t care about quality customer service and the gym conditions reflect that. Not ever the type to write reviews but will be revoking my membership soon.

I joined in December 2022, it was a good overall experience until recent price increase. Sorry, it's getting too expensive. I didn't attend any classes and wasn't really looking to do so, but it seems that every member is paying for having those classes available. I wish there was an option to exclude class attendance just like one can exclude use of pool and not pay extra $20. Same for the classes. If I don't use them why charge me 95$ per mo ? It used to be cheaper, but with a recent price increase...I don't know, I am considering just dropping that membership and just use another gym.

Use to love this gym, but now seems like it is time to go. Too much price increase over a 3 year span. Start off by saying I have the VIP wellness tenant membership since I work in the complex. Watched that price go from $75 a month in 2022 to now $95 a month in 2025. There was an increase in 2023 to $85 a month with an explanation being increased energy and operational cost. Funny how now they decide to swap out the light fixtures to more efficient LED lights from traditional in 2025 something that should have been done years ago. Not to mention the building isn't new by any means it is a retrofitted building with old piping and utilities. Water bubblers and bottle fillers routinely don't work because clearly no one knows that you need to clear the filters out of them. That's why the bottle fillers don't flow properly. When it went to $95 a month in April 2025 there was not an explanation just an added benefit of being able to take classes and group sessions. Well what if a member doesn't want to take classes or group sessions, some of us just want a gym that we can go lift some weights and do some cardio after work at. Eventually these increases are going to lose the club a lot of membership. Waverly is starting to go closer and closer to Lifetime Fitness cost and the facility is a joke in comparison. April 2025 will be my last month there, I had great workouts there but sadly the upper management has decided to leave out a large portion of gym-goers and cater to those wanting to participate in classes at the expense of everyone else.
I will add that the staff there is excellent and hard working. I constantly see cleaning and when equipment is broken it is fixed or replaced in a timely matter.

Great gym, probably the best I have ever been to! My only feedback is it seems like there is not enough cardio equipment - which you would think is insane of me to say if you have been here given they have an entire floor dedicated to cardio BUT this is the ONLY gym I have ever been to that during peak hours you cannot get on a treadmill or a stair master or any of the other cardio equipment. Its sort of a bummer having to sit around and wait for people to finish up but it is what it is and thats what I get for coming later in the day! This is a very clean gym, well maintained, friendly staff, great equipment, and very fair pricing for what they have to offer! :) I would love to see a few more treadmills and or stairmasters if they could make it work but other than that I highly suggest this gym!!

I haven’t been a member for more than two years, so I was surprised to receive an email from Senior Director Heather accusing me of not returning the group fitness tag. How could I possibly know where your group fitness tag is? This is both unprofessional and disrespectful. You can’t just accuse a person based on your guess.

Fantastic gym with a spacious layout and an impressive selection of machines and equipment to suit all my workout needs. The yoga classes are top-notch, offering a great balance of relaxation and challenge. I especially love the sauna and steam room, which are perfect for unwinding after a workout. The locker rooms are always clean and well-maintained, and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful—special shoutout to the manager, Adam, for going above and beyond to ensure a great experience. The only downside is that you sometimes have to wait for the StairMasters during busy after-work hours. Overall, highly recommend this gym!

I’ve lived in this area for a long time and never knew this gem was around. This is high class, clean, professional and one of the best facilities around. I do think it is very expensive as the price is getting close to luxury outlets like Equinox, Life Time etc. They are nowhere near as big and fancy as those, so I’d like to see more affordable options and even a pool only access membership. In either case, I do like it and worth my guest membership from time to time.

Was a member for well over a year, and so very sad I need to move on. Unfortunately due to work / life, leaving the area.
For anyone looking for a classic gym with plenty of training equipment, fitness studios, classes, etc etc, you are going to want to go here. It is a bit pricey at $90 a month, but you get the sauna/steam room locker rooms, every piece of equipment you can think of, amazing staff and more than I can list.
Will miss the place, be well, Waverly Oaks!

Hands down the best gym near Cambridge. Not only do I love how clean it is, the staff is always helpful, but the folks in the classes become community. There’s no feeling of competition- the fitnesses classes have all ages, all level of experience— I’ve been in a class with athletes and new folks and everyone came away with the workout they needed. I can’t say enough about how well run and responsive the management is. There are classes running almost every hour. The kids’ care— I’ve been in gyms for years and their child care is hands down the best I’ve been in. They have art activities, it’s peaceful. The location is ideal- close to the women’s dressing room. The girls truly enjoy children.

Great gym, good facilities, the upgrades and additional equipment added recently have made a big difference in wait times. When equipment breaks, I see a service call placed almost immediately with the equipment often being fixed rapidly. Front staff are extremely friendly and welcoming, as are the janitorial staff in the locker rooms. I have not worked with any of the trainers but they all seem knowledgeable. Overall the best higher end gym in the area for the price.
The only few requests I would have is a Lateral raise machine should be on the shopping list, as well as a “Mag-Grip” attachment for the lat pull down.

TL;DR: Facilities are great; members are below-average.
I primarily go to the gym to workout, so I use mostly use the power racks, free weights, and some machines, so I can't comment on other parts of the gym. Quality of the facilities is great - barbells feel solid and sturdy, machines are updated and new ones being added.
However, the people who go here are truly the worst in the Boston area, and I've been to several gyms at cheaper price points. I'd say about 50% of people properly re-rack weights, 25% re-rack to wherever they want, and then another 25% just don't re-rack weights. On top of that, there are lots of folks blasting music, working out in common walkways, never wiping down after using a bench, etc. I've only seen one staff member cleaning the downstairs area, all the other staff down there are just sitting behind the desk. The worst of the folks at the gym are the locals who have never left Mass and have no sense of gym etiquette and their only friends are fellow gym-goers; they're rude, passive aggressive, and have terrible form. Wish staff/management would listen to feedback to help put signs or just anything to change behavior, but they seem to turn a blind eye to it.

My boyfriend and I went to this gym for a tour on a Wednesday at around 5:30 pm. One of the front desk staff members asked if we were interested in a tour or getting a membership to workout that same day. We requested a tour first. He mentioned that staff members were busy and would arrange for someone to give us a tour. We agreed, and I began filling out the application form. However, another staff member named Brian interrupted us, stating that he had a client waiting for a tour, and asked us to come back some other time. He took away the application form and did not even give me a chance to complete it. Overall, it seems like the gym is not interested in giving tours to those who are not willing to enroll for a membership or workout on the same day. If staff members have time to use their phones, they have time to give clients a quick tour. Lastly, we had plenty of spare time to wait for him to finish with the other client so we could get the tour.

I really like the club. I use it daily for my workout programs and it's really nice place to go to. On the whole. It's very clean and very tidy. The one thing I would agree on is that there needs to be stronger control on how the Sauna and the Steam room are being used. A lot of the times it's very smelly and sometimes I can't even go into the sauna because of the smell. And it's not because they're not keeping it clean. It's because the members are going in there after their workouts and stinking up the place. They go in there with their clothes on before they work out so that they can look like they've been working out and then after they work out they come back in and stink up the place. Not even bothered to take their clothes off and shower. First. There was a rule of no cell phones and now that's been done away with. There needs to be more rules and they need to be enforced and followed. Part of its members themselves and how they treat the place and part of it is the management. They're not enforcing the rules that they set down.
But I like going there. It does what I needed to do and I'm very happy with going to the club. I have a trainer and he's very good and so I'm achieving all my fitness goals.

11/8/23"Reducing to 2 stars. I'm currently in the gym, it's dead, but the wait time for equipment is still ridiculous. Enough.time to write this review. Someone is legit watching videos on his phone, just sitting on equipment. Nothing has changed.
Updating my review from a year ago. 4 stars to I'd like to give 2.5 but I'll settle for 3. I'm glad the gym is doing well with new members. That's always a good sign. But the wait time for equipment is now getting excessive. I'm pretty sure if Waltham had another decent gym that offered more equipment, this gym would most likely feel the impact.
Pros
Aside from select front desk personnel, the staff seems friendly.
Good hours
Plenty of free weights
Plenty of Cardio
Facility is spacious
Large locker rooms
Plenty of bathrooms. No going back and forth to the locker room.
Variety of classes
Cons
Select front desk personnel, really make you feel unwelcome. So I try to avoid eye contact with them.
Cost for what is offered now that there are more members than the gym can handle.
Lacking equipment
Lacking free standing adjustable benches
Both are huge cons for me personally
Members do not follow rules or gym etiquette. On there phones taking up equipment while talking to friends on the other side of the gym.
alot of open space so it's bizarre that additional equipment isn't added. I'm sure there is a reason behind, but bizarre none the less.
I'll probably give it another month or so and see how the workouts come out. Time is very important since I have little free time to spare.

I joined the club a few months ago and have to say it’s one of the best clubs I belong to! Pre-pandemic. I was a Boston sports club member, but they did end up closing. Once I started looking around at clubs in the area and came upon Waverly Oaks, it was totally clear this was the best choice. This was the best club around and had everything I was looking for. Their classes are amazing and there are plenty of them, either spinning, yoga, Pilates, body conditioning… Things are geared for all different levels, which is what I was looking for. The locker room is very clean, and one of my wants was a sauna or steam, and this club offers both! One of the best things I enjoy as well is that I’ve made some new friends and feel very welcomed overall. Can’t go wrong with Waverley oaks. Can’t recommended it enough!

I've been a member for 1.5 years and recently had personal life challenges and newly discovered food allergies that made nutrition choices significantly more challenging to manage.
I started working with Jessica Roy who has been very creative and thorough in helping me find/research foods I could eat as well as helping me better understand the building blocks of healthy eating. She's also been a great therapist and listens to the combination of physical activity and emotional ups and downs with great empathy. I feel more in control of my life based on her guidance and recommend working with her.

This gym has lost its appeal, there is no machinery available when I visit after work. The locker rooms are full and there's barely an open locker to leave my stuff in. The men's sauna has foul odor that you get a big smell from upon someone entering and its often closed for servicing. The men's showers have no showerheads. To make matters worse its difficult to park and fees have gone up! There's several high school and college kids who fill up the gym and it's become an inconvenient and stressful place to workout.

Unfortunately I don’t have much I can say about the gym as I was turned away at the door when I came to sign. As for the customer service I experienced i a very let down. I came to the Waverley Oaks for the first time as I am in the search for a new gym. The front desk staff member barely greeted me and and rushed to tell there was no one that could help me. Im just a bit let down, as I was hopping to see the gym and make a decision to sign up today but that opportunity was taken away.
Follow Up: after the owner responded saying I could schedule a time today to come in I attempted to call to do this very thing. This time the front desk staff informed me that the sales team will “be busy for a while and I could leave a voice mail”. I have put in as much effort as I can to sign up here. I am fed up with being pushed away. My time have been waisted to much with this sub par customer service.

The gym is nice, but club manager acts rude and shocking with his attitude towards client.
Today I came to Adam with a question to turn sauna lights off. The answer was : "the club needs special permission from the city to do it". To my argument about all another gyms in Waltham have sauna lights off, he said: "I do not care(!!)." After I asked to show me the regulation, I received another answer:"You should ask city to show you this document". Seriously, Adam? Why you are there than if you are not able to give all information to the client?
Unbelievable attitude
PS I extend my review after receiving the club's reaction.
First, my name is Elena - not Elana.
Second - I have nothing against how the building was built and what club's management personally thinks is the best for the client's safety. My concern is how club's manager communicates with the client. It was rude and unappropriated at all. If client wants to understand , or needs information, or needs to see the document/explanation why something goes the certain way - manager have to give full support. I did not get any documents, any adequate explanation why light can not be turned off. Instead of this club manager uses "I do not care", "You should ask city hall" etc. And now you tell me something about 'client's safety'? Clients have to choose how they want to stay in sauna- it nothing about what you believe in, honestly. Just to conclude - the Adam's attitude was horrible and the style how he communicates is totally inappropriate. I still believe that I am as a client have all rights to see the whole information regarding my question (the document that regulates the sauna light) and to be treated politely. Plus I expect for the his personal apologies for the rude attitude.
Thank you

Jessica Roy is a great nutritionist at Waverley Oaks. She knows the science of nutrition, and she also understands the psychological part of eating. She has many great suggestions, tips, and handouts to help her clients eat well balanced and and nutritious meals. The combination of information and inspiration that she provides is ideal. I am so torn on Waverley Oaks Athletic Club. For the past year and a half of my membership I have loved the gym for how clean it is, the cardio space, extensive weight equipment and I love all the classes especially Barre on Wednesday evening with Ami and Bodypump with Julie.
One big reason we picked this gym was because it offers childcare called “Kids Club”. Most of the time we have had a good experience with Kids Club and want to praise Mellany for always taking such great care of both of my children. The kids club has always been fine for my 3 year old daughter who can walk, speak and stand up for herself. We did have a bad experience a few weeks ago where my eight month old baby was placed in a dangerous situation surrounded by and being smooshed by many older children, while the teacher was completely overwhelmed by the huge number of children in her care. I gave the manager and front desk an earful of my complaints and I was reassured the steps they would take to ensure safety but I am still terrified to send my children again and it’s such a bummer!
My suggestion would be for the kids club signup to be via the Waverley Oaks app so that way it is automated and the computer can count and limit how many kids of each age are signed up for a certain time. This would also prevent parents from having to call the front desk and wait for the front desk staff to search for the clip board, ask the names and ages, write it down - and most importantly it would prevent overbooking. I think most parents would prefer to be told it’s full than to have their child get hurt due to understaffing/too many kids. Also of course it would be good to have two kids club teachers on during any busy time.

I am a current member of this gym. Overall, the gym is expensive for the quality. Nonetheless, it is close to my house and they do have a good variety of equipment. I find the employees to be friendly and helpful. It is also clean and I see employees constantly cleaning m. I’m also happy to support a non-chain gym.
A few reasons why only 3 stars:
- the locker rooms leave a lot to be desired. The shower pressure is very weak and it takes me a long time to rinse the shampoo out of my hair. The shower heads also spray everywhere. There is often times not enough space for how many members are using the locker rooms. My boyfriend says that the inside of many lockers in the men’s room are damaged.
- the equipment ends up everywhere! I spend a lot of my workout looking for certain straps and barbells because nothing is ever in the same place! I actually mentioned this in a routine member survey and nothing has changed. Even when I arrive at 5am, the equipment is a mess. Sometimes I have to go up or down a floor to find an item!
- sometimes the personal trainers take up a lot of space and equipment in the public spaces. The trainers often use circuit training which extends their use of an item even when it is not being actively used by someone.

I am a member of this club for 4 years; team members are very friendly, great variety of equipment for all levels of physical activities, a lot of classes to chose from, and, wonderful, warm, pool. Highly important topic these days-the club is clean, very clean; I feel absolutely safe there, more to that, my 9 years old daughter took sessions with personal trainer as well;-no concerns at all regarding how well they keep place clean.

Honestly, this is a great facility all around. Members are respectful, the staff is friendly and machines are well taken care of.
So I’m writing this before COVID restrictions are fully lifted since there are just a couple small things that I’ve seen.
One thing is that none of the toilet paper dispensers work throughout the building. The toilet is constantly spraying all over the rolls, I’ve seen them on the ground, people coming out of the pool grab them and get them soaked and I even watched a lady go in and put her phone down on top of the roll (which I assume many people do) so that’s pretty gross.
The facility service employees are also a little awkward as well. They’ll sit and wait right outside your stall door waiting to clean it or lean outside the single bathrooms just waiting and it’s a little uncomfortable since you can just hear them standing there?
Also, when we signed up they did say the hours would extend after COVID restrictions are lifted. So, I’m waiting to see that, but for now they open pretty late in the morning which is a little inconvenient. Especially on the weekends.
I wouldn’t say it’s worth the price tag of $150/mo, but other than the few things I’ve mentioned it is a pretty great place to workout.

I have been a member since January 2020 and I am very satisfied and keep recommending this club to everyone. Went back immediately after they re-opened (mid-July) as they are very good with COVID precautions. This club is the best option for those who like traditional weights training as they have plenty of equipment, which is not very common with the cheaper clubs where you have to wait in line for the equipment/weight racks/benches during the peak hours. They also have a swimming pool, a lot of cardio equipment, group classes so it is good for everyone - and most importantly, a lot of space, so it never gets too crowded and it is always very pleasant to have your workout there. Overall, I haven't found anything better in the neighborhood of Waltham/Watertown/Belmont/Cambridge/Somerville in this price range after I did my research and went for a few guest visits.

I am writing to highly recommend the Nutritionist services at WOAC. Specifically, I have worked steadily with Nutritionist Jessica Roy for several years and it has been the best and most positive experience I have ever had working with a nutrition professional. Jessica has been outstanding and consistent in her support of my healthy eating and establishing a healthy relationship with food. Through working with Jessica and her providing tools and suggestions to apply in balanced eating, I have learned so much and along with regular exercise feel better and can eat a balanced food intake and not feel deprived. Jessica always has given me new content to take with me from our meetings. We have continued to meet via Zoom during the pandemic, and those meetings are just as effective and enjoyable as meeting in person. Jessica is an excellent Nutritionist and is a positive and supportive health "coach." I personally have enjoyed working with her so very much and have great info that she has given me that benefits me today. My health insurance has recently changed due to a change in my employment status and I am in process of getting another health insurance benefit in place and hope to continue working with Jessica. Jessica is a great addition to the WOAC club nutrition services and I hope you can get the opportunity to work with her!

I have been going to in-person classes since a week after the gym resumed offering them. I am so impressed with the safety and cleanliness measures that were put in place and are constantly upheld. Instructors have told me that Waverley Oaks is far and away the best at this of the different gyms they work in. I seriously encourage members to come in and check out what they have to offer. Even before the pandemic, Waverley Oaks was, and continues to be, an incredible value for the money.

The members all abide by the rules of the club and it’s a great place to work out. It’s very spacious, and that helps with keeping safely distant from members. The virtual classes are an added bonus, and are very adaptable to at home use as well. I can only speak to the pool aspect of WOAC. Have been using it pre and during covid and am 100% satisfied. Mostly great aqua fitness teachers. A safe process both to sign up and on site to use pool. Grateful that WOAC keeps pool open as it cant be used virtually!

Jessica Roy is a stellar Dietician! = When COVID-19 hit we found ourselves eating loads of comfort food and having to don stretchy pants to accommodate the extra lbs! Jessica Roy saved me with her calm presence, guilt-free assessment, and thoughtful insights for change. Her guidance empowered us to take initial small steps to improve habits - e.g. introduce a vegetable and put one or two on the plate. Good-Exposure therapy helped my kids and me! I also love her recipes and her explanation of “volumetric” eating helped me so much. I love eating large quantities and a variety of foods - and she said “That’s Great! You can do that! Just choose healthy, lower calorie foods - like a salad, or a veggie plate.” I highly recommend Jessica’s services - she is professional, compassionate, knows her stuff, and helps you create better eating habits!

I am extremely impressed and happy with the Covid-19 response from the team at Waverley Oaks. The equipment and facility are continuously cleaned, plexiglass barriers now divide the machines on the cardio deck, additional air sanitization equipment has been installed throughout the facility, hand and equipment sanitation stations are conveniently located, and face coverings are worn by everyone at all times. I am thankful for their thorough response during this time and have full faith and confidence that they are doing everything they can to keep their members safe and healthy. A big thank you to the entire Team!

I have been going to Waverley Oaks for around five years now. At his point I use the pool and I must say they do a very good job controlling access so it’s only 1 person per lane, for a 30 minute session, by appointment only. Between these sessions they clean the area. They are really diligent about keeping everyone safe throughout the building, and in following both the spirit and letter of the law when it comes to Covid restrictions.

Getting to go to this gym, for me, is the best part about living in Waltham.
Everything about this gym is great. I like how whoever is working the desk and I say hi to each other every time I come in; immediately I know that I've arrived to work out and have a good time.
Their classes are bomb. My wife and I have been going to pilates, and learning a ton - it's helped me with my squats and I have a lot of fun. There's yoga, cycling, water fitness, etc. - always more to explore. Lifting weights here is a pleasure, the basement is chill with lots of squat racks and dedicated benches. Second and third floor tons of other equipment.
Sometimes I go for a swim, and the pool here is so nice - it's salt water and not chlorine, and thus a lot less irritating and more enjoyable to swim in.
Steam rooms and saunas in the locker rooms are fantastic. I've been into going to the sauna or going to bathhouses for years ever since I started working out in college, and they truly keep it nice and hot here in the steam room, it's legit.
Hesitant to hit that post button below because I feel like I'm spilling the beans on a secret spot ... the $ value is phenomenal for the quality of the amenities and the staff.
During pandemic update 1/8/20:
So happy with with how the gym is handling the COVID-19 situation. They were able to re-open and we're fortunate to get to go every day.
I've never been let through without attesting to the COVID questions (yes it's brief but I have always had to do it).
People are great about cleaning equipment.
Social distancing is superb. Lots of space between machines. I always feel safe here.
Signing up for slots to work out during peak times is mandatory to keep the social distancing appropriate.
Hoping WOAC can keep going - we're all working together to keep it a clean space. The guidelines are quite strict and really respect how well the gym has been able to maintain them. Just as a comparison, before re-signing up with WOAC after we took a hiatus due to COVID, we checked out a competitor gym closer to our house, and were appalled - crowded space, definitely not distanced, and certainly not as clean as WOAC. Came back to WOAC in a heartbeat.

I've been a member for 1.5 years and love it here! WAOC has always been clean and spacious with plenty of equipment for all of your health and fitness needs. Since the reopening of WAOC during the COVID-19 pandemic, the club has really done the best to keep the members and staff safe. My husband and I are regulars and have always felt safe and never crowded especially during these times. WAOC has increased the the spacing between equipment, provided plenty of sanitizing stations, and ensured the wearing of masks. They are offering virtual and in-person classes. There were more in-person classes before the pandemic and I can't wait for it to return to those days. I really appreciate all the things WAOC continues to offer and how it keeps members healthy!

Most things about this facility are great - members, staff, amenities, classes, equipment etc. However, I wish I could say the same for the management. Working there for a over a year led me to this conclusion.
1. Feedback from staff to management typically is not taken well. A well run healthy living center facilitates the needs of its members while takes into consideration the expert opinion of it's staff. Unfortunately, I had never felt this way at WOAC since all of my suggests (aside from one or two when I first started) were heard but more or less put aside. It's hard to describe a "we have it under control" response.
2. Policy changes were implemented with, oftentimes in my experience, inaccurate information. One example of this is, at the time there, management bought four Olympic lifting platforms - which to their credit was awesome - which are specifically used and make to drop barbells since it's safer to drop a barbell in rare circumstances than slowly lower it down. Management wanted to ban dropping barbells on those platforms (even though that's exactly what they were made for) for "safety reasons" (even though it's safer in certain times to drop it). Trust me , I'm not one to make a lot of weight in the gym and I'm a pretty big stickler on gym etiquette - but I was asked to inform members not to drop weights in this area because it could hit someone - instead of teaching when to drop, why and making sure no one was near when performing these activities. Sort of takes away the utility of the equipment.
3. The last and most crucial issue I've had is managements focus on only what's above them. I did not feel respected at this facility and in turn did not respect management. From the staff's perspective, it felt like management curated a "management vs. staff" culture as opposed to management helping staff improve member satisfaction. Happy staff make for happy members. Individually it was really easy to care about the members but management made it difficult to love the facility.
I would love to see WOAC change it's culture to one that seeks feedback and welcomes criticism equally as much as it offers help and allows transparency. Definitely a facility with a lot of potential though!
