I highly recommend the Center for Iyengar Yoga for all who have an interest in connecting body, mind and breath to serve your well-being. Under the instruction of the Center Director, Christopher Briney, everyone can learn to make these vital connections within. No matter your age, perceived physical limitations, Chris will work with you and meet you where you are on your yoga journey. Whether you are a beginner, new to the Iyengar method or advanced and looking to deepen your practice, this is the studio for you. The sessions are like semesters which are great for development of your practice. Drop-in classes are also available for those wanting to give it a try. There is much value in having a teacher who is also a continuing student. The Center Director continues to take classes from Prashant Iyengar and the value is passed on to those fortunate enough to study at The Center for Iyengar Yoga Royal Oak. Classes are also available online. In person classes offer the additional benefit of all necessary equipment being provided including mats. The studio is beautiful and clean. The teaching includes philosophy of yoga and personalized attention to detail as the Director takes the time to get to know you and any physical limitations that may require alternative pose options. Classes at The Center for Iyengar Yoga Royal Oak have a positive health impact that goes beyond the physical.

I started taking yoga classes with Chris Briney at the inception of his studio. Instruction is always superb; practicing yoga has literally changed my life. Iyengar yoga is healing, powerful and meditative, especially when students can engage with such a wonderful and experienced teacher as Chris.

I have been practicing yoga with Chris at the Center for Iyengar Yoga on and off since 2018. Even if I only manage to practice once a week I can feel the benefits. When I came back after falling out of practice for almost 2 years I realized just how much I missed it. I had been dealing with repetitive stress injuries from a physically demanding line of work (and the rigors of parenting a toddler and 7 yr old). The physical stretching and strengthening and breath work is so beneficial. When my practice and attendance is consistent I have less pain and fatigue, less anxiety and better stress management. I also love the philosophy - the practice of stretching and strengthening of the mind. I highly recommend!!

Shortly after I retired in 2012 I suffered a sciatic event with associated drop foot. My wife had studied with Chris Briney for several years and convinced me to take some private lessons with Chris. What a blessing and the commencement of a continued journey with Chris since. Nancy and I join Chris’s Monday hour and half class via zoom whether downstate or in Northern Mich. Our overall health, mobility and flexibility at 78 add to our quality of life thanks to Chris. His exceptional teaching skills of Iyengar yoga including the meditative component keep us engaged. The use of props and his patient gentle approach is welcoming to all who wish to benefit from yoga. Namaste🙏 Dennis Herrick

I'm a long standing, sitting, inverted yoga student (+10 years) of Chris and a very seasoned psychotherapist myself. I've been impressed with his commitment to professional growth, tailoring his approach to each of the students I've been with in class. I recommend him to inexperienced and veteran yogis alike, particularly people who consider themselves not flexible or injured (as I see myself).

A clean, welcoming studio with a dedicated staff. Classes small enough to allow teachers to observe your progress and attend to your needs. If you've never tried Iyengar yoga you cannot say you know yoga.

When I first came to Chris I was a 58 year old man who previously had multiple sports injuries and lower back surgery. I had tried yoga a few times before over the years at other local yoga studios. Each time I left disappointed feeling like the helpless beginner that I was. Despite these unfulfilling attempts I knew that yoga could be good for me if I could just find the instructor/studio who could help me get started and give me the confidence to continue forward. I am so grateful to the friend who referred me to Chris. His kind and compassionate attention to his students combined with his teaching the more traditional method of Iyengar yoga makes him the ideal instructor for novices like me. As we age we too often lament about activities that we can no longer do. With CFIY the opposite has been true for me. In the past 7 years Chris has taught me how to use and understand my body in ways that I never would have imagined. If you have always wanted to learn and practice yoga but haven't because you believe that you're too old, too brittle, too injured, too inexperienced, or all of these things -- PLEASE give Chris and the Center For Iyengar Yoga a try.

I started practicing yoga in 1970. Many years, schools and teachers later, I met Chris and have benefited from his teaching more than ever before. He brings wisdom, devotion and careful attention to each student in his presence. With his guidance my practice has deepened in every respect. As a huge side-benefit, the significant scoliosis pain I had when I first came to him has been greatly reduced. I am grateful!

Chris is professional personable. He address students individual needs in their practice. I started his online classes during lockdown, which was very helpful. It’s been such a treat to finally practice in person now. The energy and the traditional practice that he offers is incomparable. I highly recommend anyone who is new or experienced in their yoga practice.

You know how big names tweet @real and then their name, maybe we should start adding @realyoga to differentiate the real from all the junk yoga that’s offered today. I can’t say what real yoga is because I am a beginner but I can tell you that I spoke to people back home (India) who have done yoga for decades and they have recommended Iyengar yoga. You get certified teachers at Iyengar yoga, and I can’t agree more with the other reviews that I read about Chris, he’s a great teacher. All I can say is give it a try and see for yourself.

Chris is an extraordinary yoga instructor! I've studied at a few different Iyengar studios throughout the USA & Canada and Chris has been the most personable and effective in advancing my understandings of my body, breath and postures. I came to CFIY with a few injuries and Chris always had an option or idea to help me better the postures for my particular body. This place is an absolute must if you're curious about progressing your practice or looking to start a yoga practice!

I live abroad, but frequent Detroit. Every time we are in the area, a bunch of us (we work for a large corporation), attend Chris' classes. He is a wonderful teacher, very sensitive to his students, and able to adapt the Iyengar tradition and style to his student's needs and injuries. The new studio on 1204 E. Eleven is spacious and charming and the classes are small and focused.

I've been practicing yoga for many years....at least I thought I did until I started practicing with Chris. He has a very effective way of expressing himself in the vocabulary of physical structure as well as being able to discuss the philosophical underpinnings of the science. The studio is kept very clean and comfortable.

After doing yoga at other studios for years, I’ve never experienced such a great and knowledgeable yoga instructor as Chris Briney and Iyengar Yoga. Iyengar Yoga was completely new to me and now it’s the only Yoga I practice. The Center for Iyengar Yoga is a beautiful space where you can feel at home and truly learn a practice of yoga, where you tune in to your body physically and spiritually. I highly recommend Center for Iyengar Yoga for anyone at any age or level to experience what yoga is really all about.

I visited Chris’s Iyengar studio during a business trip in MI. This was one of the best classes that I’ve ever experienced. Chris’s eye for detailed really impressed me. He is truly knowledgeable and can immediately apply this knowledge to achieve an impressive impact on one’s posture and position, in my case the class was able to alleviate and open my stiff neck (a result of a whiplash that I suffer from for many year). Thank you Chris, hope to see you in my next business trip to Michigan.

I cannot say enough great things about Living Tradition Yoga. I first visited 5 years ago, a yoga skeptic thinking it may help my hip bursitis. Well, not only is my bursitis cured, but my life has literally been transformed by attending the outstanding yoga classes led by certified junior intermediate Iyengar instructor Chris Briney. He is so knowledgeable, personable, and accessible to all levels of student. Even if you believe yoga is not for you, I encourage you to give this studio a try. Chris is the best!

I continue to be amazed at Chris Briney's expertise as a yoga teacher. He gives the kind of individual instruction that you can not get anywhere. He is great with those just beginning and those who never thought they could do yoga at all, older and younger students. He also keeps his students moving to the next level in their practice. He is challenging and yet he always makes each person's practice doable.
He is truly excellent.

Chris at Living Traditions goes above and beyond for his students. He was great in correcting my beginners form and helping heal issues I've had with hip and low back pain. He's been a tremendous help in the areas of nutrition, mental focus, and stress relief, as well. I've recommended him as an executive health coach as well as yoga instructor. He's the whole package.
