Dayle's YinYasa clase was amazing and I'm so grateful that she was available to sub for Kacee! Her hands-on adjustments, pacing of the class, and creative postures were wonderful. I was also blown away with her singing at the end of class. 10+ years in, Citizen Yoga continues to exceed my expectations and it's always exciting to come across a new teacher that I connected with. Looking forward to taking another class with Dayle in the future, in addition to my regular classes with Ann Fancy and Kacee Must!

Citizen helps me stay consistent with my practice whenever I’m in the Detroit area. The instructors are high quality and offer a diverse range of classes for different levels and styles. Paul’s classes are dynamic and challenging, progressing safely toward more advanced postures, with subtle Ashtanga elements and space to play with inversions. Soojin’s vinyasa classes combine intensity with playfulness in a way that encourages exploration. She creates a supportive container for her students to go deeper into their practice. I leave every class feeling both grounded and energized.

Attending Kacee's philosophy discussion was a valuable way to start the day. I liked Kacee's ease of presence with the group. I appreciated her way of articulating the principles presented, which encouraged thoughtful discussion. It was impressive to be part of a group of people who appeared to be familiar with the context of the conversation and respectful of the space. Grateful for the opportunity to experience this community.

I started my yoga practice in September of 2024. I was a little apprehensive at first since I wasn't very flexible and didn't want to look foolish. None of that has happened. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful with guidance to help me develop my practice further. I look forward to each session I attend and wish I could attend more.

Citizen Yoga Royal Oak is amazing! I have been practicing there for on and off for years and consistently for the last year! can say nothing but good things about Citizen Yoga! Everybody is super friendly, and the yoga classes are amazing! The yin/restore with Nick on Monday night got me through a very hard time in my life! If I could give 10 stars, I would! And the workshops/events (candlelight yoga at the Masonic and Yoga ant the Big House) are Great! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

With so many yoga studios popping up, finding a true home for my practice has taken time—but stepping into Citizen Yoga in Royal Oak and taking Kacee’s class changed everything. Her presence is powerful yet calming, and with her guidance, I achieved my first headstand—something I’ll always be grateful for. Kacee has a rare ability to read the room and meet each student where they are, blending deep knowledge with calm confidence and uplifting energy. The space is vibrant and welcoming, but it’s the instructors who make it feel like home. Selah, a new and incredible addition, pushed my stamina to the edge in the best way. I must’ve gotten lucky joining the Citizen family when I did—no coincidences, just perfect timing. I’ve already purchased more classes and can’t wait to keep showing up.

Challenging options if you want them, easier options when you want those. Classes at decent times of day and quick to get in and out for busy people. Instructors are approachable and friendly, classes are fun. Good price for community unlimited, been going for 6 months now. Love that most of the classes are offered online for when we can’t make the in person class or need to be at home. Han is the best. My only - only - complaint is sometimes the classes get TOO hot. Instructors should monitor the temp and cool the class off with opening the door sometimes.

While visiting my sister (for the Lions game), she signed us up for Monday morning yoga. I have a practice where I live, and I really enjoy it.
All the things I thought yoga was kinda disappeared as I walked through the doors of Citizen Yoga. It is true community in the best possible sense of the word. I loved the whole experience. When I saw how crowded it was getting, I freaked out a little bit - I really dislike being so close to people while on the mat - but then I saw how we were facing EACH OTHER, not all lined up to face the “ head of the class”, but together, sharing our space and time with each other. So cool.
I’m not gonna lie, some of the movements and poses we held were hard (for me), but the instructor was right there with us, guiding and talking us through with helpful tips - some laced with humor to relax the seriousness of the hold. And don’t forget that we are facing each other, so the man across the way was so helpful to look at for guidance. The time flew by and I am now in search of this type of practice near me. My body (and mind) was pretty jammed up before the class, and presently, hours later, I feel fabulous. Thank you so much!
Also, a huge wonderful bonus is that many people said hello, asked me where I was from. They hugged my sister, knew what was going on in her life. Community. Truly outstanding.

Been going here for 3 years. Generally very good experience, glad that they don’t do the pointless hot classrooms and generally keep the hippy dippy/religious BS to a minimum compared to other yoga studios.
I want a workout, looking to sweat, stretch and work my small stabilizing muscles for longevity, and mobility as the goal. As such, you have to be selective on which classes to take.
Paul’s classes are a tier of their own. I have never experienced a class that can compare anywhere else in 15 years of yoga living in RO and Miami. Ann is also great, she has a great presence, is funny and does a great job with micro adjustments to improve your practice. Lydia is ok, a bit hit or miss and kinda repetitive. The rest I’ve tried aren’t worth the time for my goals.
If you want the opposite end, a very gentle, low to no effort experience, Han’s classes are good for beginners or those looking for a very easy experience.
Enough variety here to fit whatever you want from yoga and avoid a lot of the self-important nonsense that usually comes wrapped up in the experience.

I’ve recently moved away and haven’t been able to attend since, so I’ve been in reflection mode on my 6 month experience of unlimited yoga at Citizen. I’ve been practicing over a decade and have gone through 300 YTT and am now purely just a student. I’ve practiced at many studios and feel like I have a good amount of understanding when it comes to what a yoga studio has to offer and the culture it exudes.
I came to this studio specifically following Sitara Bird. I had experienced several classes of Sitara’s at Detroit Yoga Lab pre-pandemic, because she is magic. She is soft, but mighty and really taught me how to do yoga for myself instead of doing yoga to look good. She is a story teller that engages you mentally and will help you work on “the work” as she puts it.
Shortly after joining, I gathered that Kacee was the owner, which in my experience, I’ve found that the owner sets themselves up above everyone and usually tries to act as if they are the best and all knowing. This is not Kacee. Kacee has created an environment where she has employed people who are just as talented as her. She created an environment that you can come to in whatever state you are in. She was at the studio all the time and practiced more than she taught, which I loved about her. She sat with me when I had a bad day and held space for me even though I was one of hundreds of students. Her story on how she started this all is inspirational and I can’t wait to support her business in the future.
I can’t mention my time here without bringing up Ann Fancy. Ann isn’t just a yoga instructor, she is a life coach, a therapist. I became infatuated with her classes due to the way they would kick my ass into shape, but I kept returning for the lessons that she taught to me. My relationships got better, my attachment style became more secure. I recommend her to every yogi I know. As soon as the highway construction clears up, I will be on my way to her class. She’s on YouTube if you can’t make it to the studio.
One more special mention is Elyse Brogdon, she has a unique approach to teaching that I haven’t experienced in other teachers. She’s soft and nurturing, but you leave completely spent, but feeling well balanced as well. She also made me feel very welcome at the studio as well as the front desk manager Rooney. They are both warm people.
Obviously all of the teacher are fantastic, but I wanted to take the time to tip my hat to the people who helped me through a transitional time in life. This is one of the best studios I’ve been to and you should definitely go here.

NOT YOGA! Which is ok with most Americans. But rest assured, they do not teach yoga, and often what is taught is not safe (long-term). ‘Teachers’ at citizen locations make up yoga poses all the time. Inventing yoga poses is not your creative expression! It puts people’s health and wellbeing at risk. you will not find yoga here!

Citizen Yoga and its staff are excellent! The studio has a great atmosphere, and I’ve really enjoyed all of the classes I’ve taken there. I’ve attended classes with live music and practices other than yoga which were all great, but my routine class is Melissa Wagasy’s Sunday morning Blend.
This wonderful class eases into a flow that builds heat, followed by a slow down. Melissa has built a variety of playlists that are a perfect companion to the pace of the class. I find myself looking forward to those challenging, yet rewarding 75 minutes all week long. I really enjoy her as an instructor and plan to continue to take her classes as I develop my practice.

I have been coming to Citizen Yoga since they opened in Royal Oak 11 years ago. Being a "Citizen" has added so much to my life.
In addition to the other amazing classes on my weekly schedule, on Sunday mornings, I have the pleasure of attending Melissa Wagasy's class, which has become a staple in my schedule. Melissa creates interesting, dynamic flows that are always fresh, combined with a lovely playlist that helps me to stay inspired through the challenging, 75-minute class. She remembers people's names, compliments them throughout class (by name!), and stays focused on the mood in the room, altering her plans if needed. This flexibility is a metaphor for a great yoga class! I have watched Melissa blossom into an incredible teacher throughout her time at Citizen. I highly recommend her classes.

I have been a dedicated member of Citizens Yoga of Royal Oak for two wonderful years now, and I can confidently say that it has been an incredibly transformative journey. At the heart of this transformative experience is none other than our remarkable instructor, Han.
Han is not just an amazing instructor; she is the embodiment of what it means to be a spiritual coach and a true yogi professional. Her guidance and expertise have elevated my practice to new heights, both physically and spiritually. Han creates an environment that is nurturing, supportive, and deeply inspiring. Han is consistent in her quality, yet experimental and always bringing new teachings into her craft. You can tell she is always seeking growth for herself and leads by example to teach students to always keep growing.
What sets Citizens Yoga apart is not only the excellence of Han's instruction but also the welcoming community of fellow yogis. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or just starting your yoga journey, you'll find a warm and inclusive atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to grow and thrive.
I've had the privilege of attending many different classes and experiencing various teachers, and I can attest that each one brings something unique to the mat. Every session is thoughtfully curated to be challenging yet accessible, ensuring that no one feels overwhelmed or left behind.
If you're seeking a yoga studio that offers more than just physical exercise, look no further than Citizens Yoga of Royal Oak. And if you have the pleasure of attending one of Han's classes, consider yourself truly fortunate. She is not just an instructor; she is a beacon of light guiding us on our journey to wellness and self-discovery.
Thank you, Han, and thank you, Citizens Yoga, for being a sanctuary of positivity, growth, and community. I am forever grateful for the profound impact you've had on my life.

Citizen swiftly became my "third space" after a recent move back to Michigan. The community-focused ethos here isn't simply lip service; Kacee, the owner, remembers every student's name. If you're a regular, she'll make an effort to learn the limitations of your body and personalize her cues accordingly, even in a packed class.
And of course, its not just Kacee who offers this kind of attentiveness, but Ann, Sitara, Paul, Najee, Nick and all of the passionate, thoughtful instructors who live and breathe this practice. And the students as well, who introduce themselves to you freely, offer to put your blocks away after class, chat with you as you're putting your shoes on etc.
Classes are still about asanas, or poses, yes, but the emphasis on yogic philosophy, community-building, and spirituality at Citizen's core has broadened my understanding of this practice beyond the physical. Taking class here means I get an hour each day not only to move my body, but to learn how to sink deeper into the muck of being human and tolerate the discomfort – yoga's true gift.
A rare and special studio.

I've been to a lot of different yoga studios both in and out of state and citizen has something special. It has wide variety of classes, a deep knowledge of yoga practices, phenomenal instructors, and a true dedication to community.
I highly recommend Nick’s Monday night restore in RO and anything with Melissa Wagasy, Soojin Kim, and Linda Kay!

I signed up for a heated class. The class was not only not heated, the door to the outside (while it was 40 degrees outside) was open. The class wasn't so much yoga as it was slow stretching. The front desk person was also rude

After having such positive experiences at the Detroit studio, decided to buy a package deal for the Royal Oak studio. However... I wish I had never even bothered. Whatever your experience with yoga, know this studio caters to a very devoted type of pretentious yogi, and it can be jarring for newcomers.
It felt more like a yuppity cult than a yoga class. Zero inches between you and the next person, instructors who literally never stopped talking during class (even when it was internal meditative postures), customers cursing undrr their breath at how much they hate the class, and just extremely chaotic on the fly moves. I didn't even bother to finish my package, it was such a bad couple classes. This location has a devoted fan base and isn't going anywhere soon. If this is the type of atmosphere you like, go for it. But if it's not - definitely find another studio.

Classes are challenging but not too challenging where it becomes annoyingly hard, especially in a hot class. The hour flowed and I dripped in sweat. That’s a good thing!! I did a warm vinyasa class on 8/7 with Sitara. Wonderful class.

Attended a class here and here is my experience, The class was well led although just not really much fun when advanced people are taking a basic class really takes the fun out of trying to learn or being supported. Additionally the studio doesn't manage numbers. The space probably could hold 30-35 but they jammed 50 in there. It was uncomfortable to have someone laying across my mat and sweating on it. The only reason for the 4 stars was the amount of people. I would recommend this studio for Intermediate or Advanced Yoga people just not for Beginners.

My first class at Citizen was with Amber and it was my first in person yoga class in quite some time. I was challenged and engaged and felt stronger and lighter in spirit afterwards. I felt comfortable there very fast and will be coming back:) !
I've come back and taken classes with two other instructors and they all have their own style and approach and while I still felt supported and challenged the one thing I will say is I do not like loud music while doing Yoga. Some instructors use it, not all, but it's incredibly overwhelming when played at high volumes.

I do not recommend this place for the simple reason that Kayla Spray is an instructor there. She is a very dishonest and rude person to have to deal with. I absolutely would give her negative stars if I could. She doesn't honor her contracts! When you confront her about not honoring them, she gets hostile, threatening, rude, and makes ridiculous arguments. Out of pure retaliation, she will even write you a bad baseless review. You deserve this Kayla. Sorry I ever had the misfortune of ever meeting you!

UPDATE 6/25/22: Citizen is back to a 5 star studio. They got through Covid issues and now the community feel is back. I really miss Todd but adore Casey Miller (spiritual, intentional), Linda Kay (spirited, experienced) and Melissa (hands on). I enjoy the Bloomfield studio the most because it’s an older crowd. Royal Oak is jammed with 20’s year olds who are too loud for my taste. I haven’t been to the Detroit studio.
My original review: Since 2017, I’ve been a loyal Citizen student, attending class 3-4 times a week. It felt like family. The yogis were wonderful. Todd Tesen, Kalya Spray, Sojin, Bashi and Paul W. top notch.
Citizen has lost the family feeling for me. My favorite yogis have either dropped off the schedule or have very few class offerings. It’s a lot of new teachers.
I’m 51 yrs old. I used to love the varied demographics at Citizen. It’s always been a studio that attracts a younger student with other ages mixed in (students and teachers). But now, it feels like I’m grandma. Students are mostly in their 20’s. It does affect the energy/feel of a class for me.
I’ve been in the Royal oak studio since they reopened from COVID protocols. It is packed, sweaty and windows/doors stay shut. Especially with Paul W classes. So sweaty the guy 6 inches away from my mat was slipping on his mat. I was imagining all those sweat droplets landing on me and they guy falling on top of me. I was first one out the door when class ended.
Please bring back the family feel. Where they knew your name when you came in, the best yogis and safety protocols. I want to fall back in love with you!

Front desk staff were very kind, accommodating and attentive. When I left early they talked to me and gave me other class recommendations and were incredibly sweet. I feel bad for leaving a somewhat negative review but to save someone else from my very uncomfortable experience here are some observations:
- During my 9:30am visit on a Monday, I don't think I saw a single person of color or anyone bigger than a size 2-4 aside from the ripped crossfit looking dudes.
- There was one person in the entire studio who looked over the age of 35 and guess who is the only person who got singled out by name with multiple verbal corrections throughout the class? Them. This just gave me a weird vibe.
- The vinyasa class recommended 1-5 yoga classes, I've been taking yoga classes for over 5 years probably been to over 30 minimum. I could not follow along. I honestly dont know how the other students remembered a 7-8 pose sequence after being led through 2ce with very minimal verbal prompts. I was floundering and legit hung out in downward dog and forward fold for 3-4 minutes trying to watch the other students and the instructor never came over to assist.
-The music was so loud and the verbal prompts were so minimal I did not know what was going on so I literally left in the middle of class. I've never done that in my life before.
Honestly the entire experience (aside from the front desk staff) felt like toxic positivity white washing yoga satire. I might try again with a different class and different instructor but I just felt embarrassed and not good during the class.

I recently took part in yoga on the lawn at DTE with Kacee as well as an in studio class with Ann Fancy and just last night, Citizens 8th Birthday Silent Disco with both Kacee and Ann Fancy. I was blown away with how welcoming they both were and the inspiring words they spoke during all three classes. As well, each class was challenging and informative. I learned different techniques to get deeper into poses I have done for years and will implement into my practice. Above all, the message I took away from Citizen yoga was the inclusive environment to welcome everyone into a safe space and to heal from the inside out by learning the tools on your mat to face difficult situation in everyday life. I would highly recommend this studio and even though I live a good distance away, it is worth the drive!

I love that Citizen Yoga provides a holistic approach to my health and wellbeing, regardless of where you are starting from, Kacee and her incredible team provide an inclusive and attainable environment and community, where no one feels left behind or inadequate. As a middle aged woman that had always focused on cardio based exercise and movement, I always felt ill equipped for yoga (touching my toes seemed like a pipe dream), I have learned at CY it isn’t how good I am at it, it’s just about doing it! You will get far more out of being part of the CY community than learning how to do a downward dog, I know I have!

Hands down my FAVORITE yoga studio of all time. I’ve been to other yoga studios in the metro Detroit area but nothing even compares or comes close to this one. I literally rave to all my friends about how wonderful this place is.
All the instructors are extremely welcoming, supportive, and helpful. The staff is super understanding and friendly, consistently! You can tell they all love working there, which is really refreshing to see. The ambiance is sooo relaxing and beautiful. I’m a huge fan of the in-person indoor classes. Lots of classes offered throughout the day. They even have the coolest retreats, which I plan to go on soon.
I’m glad I found this place at a time I needed it the most. It’s helped me so much with stress, depression, and anxiety.
