Due to the downtown YMCA allowing members only 2.5 hours of parking before being charged, there is not enough time for members who take two workout classes. It also isn’t enough time for families who want to work out and then go swimming with their children. This change has really hurt the sense of communityβ€”everyone is just rushing in and out, unhappy, like at so many other YMCAs.

The class size first and foremost was the best thing about our experience. For my kids to learn how to swim with only two other children was perfect, I hope the ratios never change! The patience of the instructor (and the sub instructor this week) was also such a great help. These two are really wonderful young women and have done so well with my kids, who are both Autistic and sometimes need a little extra. Thank you!

I’m disappointed in how the YMCA handled a situation where I raised concerns about feeling emotionally unsafe to use the gym due to a staff member’s retaliatory behavior - both in the facility and online. I asked specific questions about their code of conduct and what protocols exist to support member safety, but was met with vague or non-answers and no action, other than being told to report future incidents.

I was a longtime member and a local fitness professional who simply wanted to feel safe using the gym. I’m not leaving this review lightly. I hope the YMCA will reconsider how they respond to member concerns - especially when it comes to emotional well-being and staff accountability.

I’ve since learned that others have had similarly frustrating experiences with lack of accountability and unclear leadership. It’s disappointing, but not surprising, that member safety and staff conduct issues are treated with such passivity.

One of my favorite YMCAs in town, along with the MFB Y. love the separate lap pool, the kids pool and slide, and the racquetball courts. Beautiful new locker room for the women, in the process of remodeling the men's.

The gym is becoming better and better. The number and assortment of machines and free weights is fantastic, the layout makes sense, and the availability of multiple pools, basketball courts, sauna, steam room, and hot tub, are hard to find in other gyms. Machines are regularly maintained and updated, with the latest and greatest, as well as regular replacing of pads and linings. While some work remains ongoing, it will only result in an even better product. Parking has changed and while there is another two or three minutes added to getting in and out, the new garage is incredibly easy to navigate, and parking is abundant. No more driving around and hoping that a spot opens up while you are in the lot.

I love the Y because they have all the equipment I could possibly want to achieve my fitness goals. The indoor track, the group fitness classes, the pool, and the amazing staff all make it a great place to work out. As a trans guy, I also really appreciate the gender neutral locker rooms.

We joined the YMCA just after the pandemic in an effort to help my daughter (who is autistic) to become a better swimmer. After going to many swim schools and trainers previously, we were nervous to engage but then met Ms. Indya at the GR YMCA. She absolutely did what no other instructor was able to do, which was teach my daughter to simply love swimming. She was incredibly patient and kind. When my daughter was terrified to put her face in the water, she didn't push it but eventually bought her a snorkel mask which she took to immediately. She now dives under water on her own and truly loves swimming. I can't thank her and the YMCA enough for their work, kindness and patience. Truly a special place for my family.

The Y made awesome, much needed updates to their facilities to greatly increase member experience. I can look past their poor weekend hours and I can look past their months long renovations on their locker room.

But I cannot look past the horrible decision to give up the parking lot for the stadium development. Why did the YMCA agree to this BEFORE having their proposed over the road bridge made? Having to park across the street (two crosswalks) with an active railroad is a completely different experience than what guests pay a lot of money for. I'm typing this as I've sat for over 10 minutes JUST TO LEAVE the parking structure as a train continues to pass through.

This is gonna get horrible during the winter. The whole marketing campaign to "sign up to park in the parking structure for free!" was a slap in the face for long time members like myself. "Sign up for a worse experience, but hey it's free!"

All the goodwill created from the amazing renovations have been tanked in my mind.

My daughter attends the Lowell YMCA Summer day camp, and has talked about going to this location once or twice a week to swim with her group. It just so happened, that our local high school pool where we typically swim on Saturdays was closed today. She suggested we make the drive to GR and try this place, and ohhhh my goodness! What an experience! The pools were the PERFECT temperature, the hot tub was relaxing when I snuck over for a quick dip (and I could peek over the side to keep an eye on her while she played with some other kids). It was just amazing.

We will definitely be getting a membership and make this our new place to go hang and work out. The staff were all amazing. The lifeguards were friendly and professional, the front desk staff have a way about them that makes you feel like they are HAPPY to have you there... and for those of you who have taken your kiddos places that are "kid friendly" or even places that are MADE for children, this is not always the case with staff at those places, so it was very refreshing.

Thanks for a great day guys! I wish I could give 10 stars! ❀️

You should really inform people of all your renovations before they start a membership with the YMCA. i started a membership for my family only to find out that the womens locker room was closed. I was told it would be done in two weeks yet it's been 6 weeks and the locker room is still closed. The family pool was also closed for half of my the months membership so the YMCA became unusable for my children which is the only thing for kids to do there and the main reason we got a membership. The ymca seemed like a good idea because the entire family could use the amenities. My husband or i would watch the kids in the pool while the other used the other amenities but that wasn't the case for us. We would've been better off saving our hard earned money and spending it elsewhere.

If you are considering a YMCA membership and planning to use this location, I would hold off. The current renovations make this facility so difficult to use it's not worth the trouble. What is even more concerning is the lack of care or response that the membership team has for current members who are inconvenienced.
Currently unavailable: a large portion of the parking lot, child drop off areas, women's locker rooms and all amenities associated with those locker rooms, and often times the pool. The way that members have been treated during this renovation is disheartening to say the least and they will still collect their full price memberships even though they cannot offer reasonable alternative solutions. There are around 5-6 total working private showers available to service the entirety of women at this massive facility with no end in sight.
I have contacted membership services and received a variety of cut and paste responses about how they are aware that the renovations are inconvenient and the suggestion is to pause the membership or go to a different location, no discounts or refunds offered. Don't spend your money here right now.

I don't understand The "Y" has gotten lazy with having you to upload financial information into a computer system making your information available to the possibilities of getting hacked by any and everyone across the world ! Why would they risk their selves that liability of being sued if that ever occurred. Which happens all the time !Very uncomfortable with the NEW online process of becoming a member! Why is this a good idea? Maybe it's the cause of lower memberships. Also when Covid left it must have taken the welcoming kindness and compassion with it from the front desk and the interactions with the employees their.

The Y is expensive, I mean it is a massive building and I do gain access to a lot of things with the membership, but the main problem is, I have a hard time imagine more people is able to use everything that they offer. The man locker-room is honestly gross and outdated. The parking lot is always a nightmare especially if a fire alarm goes off in the wintertime. Considering I am paying over 70 dollars a month for just the weight room, basketball court and swimming pool, it is not worth it. If you are just using the weight room there are so many better options.

Great workout facilities at David D. Hunting YMCA! Updated 3rd floor and ongoing locker room improvements make the downtown YMCA a world class facility. If you are looking for some where to actually work out this is not the place for you. There are children always all over the weight area, the parents just let them do what ever and the staff don't say anything either. And I'm meaning under 10-12 years old.

There are also inconsiderate people that do not practice gym etiquette and will take up 3-4 machines at a time.

Clean facility with high-quality classes and instructors, lots of basketball, courts, and a full track for running and walking. They just updated their selection of equipment and added more machines, dead lift platforms, and bench press benches. It can be busy during peak hours, but the gym culture here is respectful when I go, and there’s not too much β€œego lifting” or anyone that’s going to intimidate you.
It’s a great environment for families and regular folks who want to maintain physical fitness. They did raise their prices recently, but I believe you get what you pay for here.

If you’re looking for any sort of actual workout DO NOT come here. This YMCA is MASSIVE and is the BIGGEST waste of space ever for anyone not trying to bring their toddler to play in the indoor water park that takes up probably 80% of the whole building. You’ll pay 60 dollars a month to enjoy waiting 30 minutes between every set because their gym area is mostly basketball courts and have less machines or free weights than any other small local gym. The lap pool? Despite have an entire floor dedicated to swimming it’s only 6 lanes and 1/2 the time unusable because all lanes are full. This Y is great for taking your kids too, but anything outside of that. A massive waste of money.

We have been long standing participants of the rec leagues at the downtown YMCA/DDH (some of us members others non-members). The Y is continuing to raise their rates for league participants and now this year non-members are required to pay an additional fee on top of the league fee (this is all now in addition to paying for our own parking as well). Over the past couple of years the $$ rates have continued to increase the quality of the leagues have decreased (reffing, number of games given per season, schedule organization, etc). We have continued voiced these frustrations as we have enjoyed the community of the YMCA but it is hard to understand why they make it so difficult.

I'm happy to have started at the YMCA in Grand Rapids, Mi this spring. The staff is always around when you need and the lifeguards at the pool are watching all the time. Best of luck 🀞 on your goals if you choose to join this Y.

I work as a caretaker for the cognitively disabled. I brought some residents to this YMCA along with another caretaker. While most of the group was swimming, a (male) resident walked into the men’s locker room. My coworker started walking toward the locker room to find a male staff member nearby who could help, and was instead met by a female janitorial staff who lectured her for β€œstanding too close to the men’s locker room door.” My coworker came and got me for help, and I also walked toward the door to find a more helpful staff member. I found a very nice lifeguard who listened to my description and went into the locker room to find the resident. While I was waiting, the same janitorial staff as before came and gave me the same lecture, even after I explained the specific circumstances of our visit/issue (or tried to explain, she continuously interrupted me and my coworker). She then proceeded to lecture my coworker again, this time on going in and out of the hall outside the locker rooms when the pool is at capacity and the door is β€œclosed.” We again explained our circumstances, and that we needed to communicate with each other about our residents, but it didn’t seem to matter to her. Luckily, before it could escalate, the awesome lifeguard found my resident and made sure he came out of the locker room clothed (huge shoutout to him!). I think staff should be spoken to about how caretaker dynamics work.

The Aquatics program is so much better under Melissa’s leadership! She does a fantastic job working with the kids and instructors and in keeping everything organized.

The YMCA will be a part of my children's childhood that they will always be able to remember as fun family time! There's something for everyone to enjoy from ballet, basketball, zumba, swimming and much more! We are proud YMCA members and we appreciate the whole team for all they do to make our experiences enjoyable!

I love all of the greater GR YMCA's but there is something particularly special about the David D. Hunting Branch. There's always a warm greeting and positive energy right when you enter and also the facility, staff, and view of the city are all wonderful.
