The atmosphere here is great, and the members are friendly and encouraging. The lifting equipment is reliable and well-maintained, and I appreciate the range of yoga balls, mats, and lighter free weights for joint stability and simple workouts. The basement offers excellent open space for functional training, which is a nice bonus.
However, a few areas could use some attention. The sauna hours are inconsistent, and since an employee has to turn it on, it’s often unavailable when staff have already left for the day. Several treadmills are in rough shape, some held together with gaff tape, others with incline functions that no longer work. The basement space, while useful, has a noticeable odor and could benefit from a deep clean and some refreshed equipment.
Overall, this gym has great energy and solid potential. With more consistent maintenance and sauna accessibility, it could easily move from good to exceptional.

I’ve been a member of this gym for several years, and unfortunately, my experience has been very disappointing. The facility feels outdated — the equipment has not been updated in a long time, and several machines have been out of order for months. Maintenance and reinvestment in the building seem very limited.

In my opinion, management focuses more on advertising than on improving the member experience. For example, I’ve noticed heavy spending on marketing and signage, but the gym equipment and repairs don’t seem to get the same attention. (Paint and install $45k sign before fixing equipment)

I’ve also personally experienced recurring health issues each winter while using the gym, and while I can’t say for certain what the cause is, I believe it may be related to conditions inside the facility.

Billing practices have also been confusing. Fees like the annual “club enhancement” charge sometimes appear more than once a year, and prices don’t always seem consistent between the website and in-person conversations. ($44 per charge per person and we got 1 “new” (used) $300 deadlifting bar)

Finally, I’ve found the environment uncomfortable at times due to the way staff interactions are handled. In my view, management could be much more professional and transparent with both employees and members. (Robyn watches everyone on the cameras)

Overall, I don’t feel this gym provides any good value for the money. If you’re looking for a well-maintained and transparent fitness center, I would recommend exploring other options before committing here.

Just joined the location on Hts Ravenna Rd…the equipment is very old…let’s talk about the clientele! There are no rules when it comes to this, no respect, people are so loud, having conversation with each other from across the gym, fowl language, they are not mindful at all of this. Several times the music on the playlist in the gym was very disturbing and disrespectful. The young men that work there are very nice but too passive . No one racks the weights correctly, and that’s if they even rack them back in the appropriate place. There is absolutely no gym etiquette here. I have lived in multiple states, been a member at many gyms and this one by far hits the bottom of the scale.

After going to the West Side location in GR for years, I moved to Muskegon for work and I was so pleased to see they have a Family Fitness location here!

This location is a large gym with a lot of nice equipment. I love the adjustable cables and the cardio gallery. They also have a large selection of dumbbells and a lot of the equipment is newer compared to the West Side location. It’s a little busier than I am used to, but I’ll adjust to that. I’m also excited to use the sauna if I can ever remember to bring a bathing suit or a towel.

Some drawbacks:
-I think I made a bad impression on the manager for forgetting to wipe my shoes off but I’m hoping we can turn that around
-respectfully, the hip adduction/abduction machine could use replacement or some kind of maintenance
-the lockers in the locker room are very old and you cannot hang your coat without a hanger
-there is political signage around the office areas which seems like they are trying to drive away people without certain beliefs (I believe being politically neutral is more professional)

Other than those things, though, I’m looking forward to being a member of the 5am club here and I am excited to see how much progress I can make!

At least a quarter of the machines are broken or faulty, doesnt seem like everything is kept up to date, not very clean, and there is one rag and wash bottle for a whole section of machines. The weights on the machines arent very accurate as well. The basement has punching bags but they arent up because the bolts broke and it doesnt seem like its going to be fixed anytime soon. The key card takes at least 5 swipes go get in. It'll do in a pinch, but I'd rather save money and go to Planet Fitness 10 minutes down the road.

Manager is racist with control issues and doesn't listen. I use this gym with my children and partner. Manager approached my partner mid-workout and asked him his name and if he was "supposed to be there," then said "we're about to find out."
Claimed she was trying to figure out why the door was wide open. We had been working out for about 40 minutes at this point. Would not listen when we informed the card scanner is problematic DAILY half the time it doesn't register I'm there. She keptinsisting everything is fine and we don't know how to scan a card. To add insult to injury, she later called me and said my partner "took it the wrong way" and she was "trying to figure out who broke the door" Well....she didn't ask anyone else!
Never had an issue when I was bringing my girl friend with me to work out, not a peep. This individual is problematic at best, and should NOT be running a gym. Avoid this place.

Robin is a great Rainer. I'm 70 and had lost my strength due to surgeries and chemo. Couldn't carry a grocery bag of hot dog buns. Had a flabby belly. In 4 months I am doing great, firm stomach, (Had to buy new pants, smaller waist. Carrying things my wife cannot believe I am carrying.). Highly recommend Robin at Family Fitness!

The name Family Fitness exactly describes this gym.
The management and members gives the gym a Family atmosphere. As a team (management and members), we clean our area when we complete our workouts. So, the next members will have clean area when they start.

I signed up excited for the ability to use the gym 24/7, so I was disappointed when I went to use it the first night and the key they gave me to get in didn’t work. I brought it up the next day and the general manager knew the card she gave me was bad, told me to throw it out, and gave me a new one. This key worked for about two weeks and then stopped working also, leaving me locked out and unable to lift once again. I was just hoping for a reliable place I could get my lifts in, but I couldn’t even get into the building to use the equipment I paid for.

We just moved to the area and wanted to start their 30 day free trial to see if this is the gym we would like to go to. We set up a meeting with Robin only to find out when we get there, that they can't give us the free trial because they can't prove we're local without a Michigan drivers license. Even though we had multiple other forms of address identification proving our local Michigan address, she would not accept it. Of course we could sign up for a membership or pay for a day pass with those other forms of address identification, but not the free trial. Would not recommend. She was rude and completely unaccommodating. We wanted to support a local business but instead we're going to have to go with a chain.

I have been trying to contact corporate, leaving messages with Robin, the manager at the NM Location. We canceled our membership in 2017 and our account is STILL being charged! We moved over an hour away over TWO+ years ago. They are claiming we "renewed" our membership July 2021, ironically we didn't even live there then. Why would we renew a membership when there is not a location remotely close to us?!?!?! I have called Robin about 6 times now, she has assured me that someone from corporate will call me. I have a group of 11 kids I bring there at 6:00 a.m. every morning. The way equipment is always clean, nice little organized gym for being small, And an excellent little cardio area downstairs, and there's also a mat down there that we use for wrestling practice. My son was visiting and just got back from a tour in Kuwait, the Family Fitness on Alpine gave me a pass for 21 days for my son to work out with me. We went to the N. Muskegon gym and the manager would not honor it. She was going to make him pay the fee, even though we had a guest pass. I will NOT be back to that gym and will make it a point to go to the Alpine one instead!! I have been a member for 3 years and am appalled that they would not honor the pass because my son was from out of town! I was more than willing to pay the 5 bucks but that is not the point! This is the worst gym company I've ever had a membership with. I came in to sign up for a 30 day free trial and got signed into a 2 year membership that I attempted to break numerous times. My wallet was stolen here in March 2017 and the managers didn't even look at the cameras. The doors to the locker rooms are propped open so it's very easy for men to come into the women's locker room or vice versa. They would not let me break my membership without paying half of it off after that crime incident, which I am aware is not the only incident there. They wouldn't let me quit without a utility bill or rent bill in my name despite the fact that they know I am a student and was moving back to my parents residence and all the bills are not in my name. Once I got bills in my name the earliest they said I could terminate the membership was the last month of the membership. The staff and manager are not helpful at all in the termination process or involving the crime and the corporate team is a bunch of crooks. The equipment is always half "out of order" as well. Go to planet fitness and save yourself stress and money.

Edit - After using the gym for three months we spoke with the manager. We needed to get away from this place. Someone had urinated on the heater in the dry sauna, my wife found used tampons on the floor in the women's room, people were bringing their dogs in to work out with them, out of all of the treadmills, normally only 1/4 of them work at any given time, the barbells are all bent from members throwing them on the floor, the management doesn't care that they throw them on the floor. I also explained that it really isn't a place to bring our teen's. Who wants their kids to workout with all of that going on? The manager agreed and let me out of my contract. I am still being charged. Upper management let him go shortly after we spoke and they will not listen.

This is not a workout facility you want to join. Nothing is clean about it, and the new management does nothing to improve the facility. If you insist on using Family Fitness, use the Norton Shores location. It is the only FF facility that is kept up and the management is proud of it.

STAY AWAY!!!!! North Muskegon will not tell you about a contract and forge e signature. We never signed anything other than one piece of paper agreeing for auto pay. All of a sudden we want to cancel and they want a $1000 fee. They email us this contract that apparently says we agreed to it. We looked at it and clearly was not our signature. They apparently signed on a tablet or some sort of portable device and said we did. We never signed it. They don't have any proof and now are threatening us. If you have to deal with corporate they will never answer the phone again after they find out you want to cancel. They will just email telling you to pay them. Family Fitness is one of the best gym I know around. They are very friendly and hardworking. The staff are awesome! I work with my trainers Julius and Jessica. Isaiah is the only reason I have a membership here. He was so nice and welcoming when I came to check the place out. He keeps the gym looking great and making sure it's a welcome environment. He is awesome and you should keep him around forever!

I've been coming here for 3 or 4 months now and the place is clean and well kept. They have good equipment and the trainers help a lot like Julius. The prices are also very fair and the people that workout here are nice and will help you out also.

Julius and Chris have always been friendly and are very flexible with scheduling training sessions around my busy schedule. They work with you to get a training schedule that will best help you meet your fitness goals. Isaiah, the assistant manager, is always friendly and remembers your name and face. I couldn't ask for a more welcoming gym to go to.

This Gym is literally what I can ask for! Honestly this place feels like home to me, everyone knows and respects each other. The equipment is great! Recently we got new bars for the bench press and it feels great. Also the people that control these place are considered as my bros and that is Isaiah and Julius. Thanks to them I am able to succeed and achieve my goals on how to be a lot more fit and strong. I definitely suggest trying this place out.
