Whenever I travel I find a studio to take a class. Power yoga with Kathy was great this morning. She had a flow that was both balance and strength which I found enjoyable. I liked her style of teaching and found myself pushing myself to do things I canβt normally do (like wheel). If I lived in Grand Rapids, Iβd make this my home studio.

I want to begin by saying Iβve been a loyal customer for several years. Iβve brought guests, referred friends and family, and have genuinely enjoyed being part of the Funky community. Thatβs why I was so disappointed by the unprofessional experience I had at the front desk today with Morgan.
Instead of being met with understanding or a willingness to find a solution, my friend and I were treated dismissively and asked to leaveβsimply for trying to explain what we had been told by multiple staff members at different locations. We were made to feel as though we were being dishonest, which was both surprising and upsetting.
A suggestion: if someone is working in a customer-facing role, they should have the skills and temperament to handle public interaction professionally.
Unfortunately, Morgan does not seem to have a grasp of respectful communication or customer service fundamentals. Rather than seeking to help or understand, she was confrontational and unhelpful.
In the past, Iβve had poor experiences with certain instructors and chose to avoid their classes while continuing to support others I enjoyed. But when front desk staff fail to address concerns and treat long-standing customers rudely, that reflects poorly on the entire business.
There are many quality yoga options nearbyβand even if there werenβt, I wouldnβt feel comfortable spending another dime here if this is how your team treats loyal customers.

My friend and I did our first class a few weeks ago and absolutely fell in love! Both of us have done some yoga but arenβt super well versed, and the instructors here do a great job of explaining without it feeling like theyβre talking down to you. The instructors weβve had so far also give great, easy to understand cues, which is something Iβve come to really value in my practice!

Great vinyasa yoga classes, warm but not unbearably hot. Classes are never exactly the same, and all the instructors are great. They give guidance so you can make the flow as easy or as hard as you like. Membership options/rules are very customer-friendly and reasonable, and lots of different class times/locations makes it easy to make it to a class. Join already!

I am a true beginner to yoga and Iβm utilizing the practice to help with Judo and Muay Thai which I also practice.
After the first class, I instantly recognized the benefit of consistently doing yoga on a weekly basis.
For beginners, I recommend the Slow Flow class. Power Flow, I feel was too advanced for my current level. Alexandria (East-town) runs the class twice a week and she is throughly knowledgeable in creating both a relaxing, but effective environment.
I am throughly enjoying this and after several weeks, my body feels incredible and much lighter. Highly recommend, both for athletes and laypeople.

Iβve been here before, but itβs been years. I absolutely adore the atmosphereβitβs very chill and cozy. Plus, itβs a very clean environment. Anyway, I had purchased a package back in November but was unable to use it within the allotted time. My son had been extremely sick for months, but heβs finally doing better and back at school. Fast forward to today, I spoke with the manager, Carina, and explained my circumstances. She was amazing! Not only did she help me with my package, but she also assisted me in scheduling my first class, shared other site options, and answered all my questions about my first day. I just had to write a review because this place is truly awesome.

Always a fantastic workout. Classes are mostly women and mostly Lululemon but it doesnβt feel judgmental. Everyone does their own thing. You do need a basic knowledge of yoga or itβs hard to know what move is what without watching others. That being said the teachers are helpful and will guide you if youβre lost!

I had an amazing experience at Funky Buddha in Eastown! Attending their free yoga day class was a fantastic way to get a taste of what they offer. The Power Flow class I tried was absolutely incredible, especially for someone like me who loves hot yoga. The heat really helped relax my muscles and enhance the overall experience.
What truly stood out was the instructor's attentiveness. They would circulate during the class, ensuring everyone's form was correct. If they noticed any misalignment, they would offer gentle guidance to make sure we were doing the poses correctly. This personalized touch added so much value to the class.
The session was incredibly relaxing, yet it still provided an excellent workout. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Funky Buddha and wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow yogis or anyone looking to give yoga a try.

I moved to GR in November and I've been blessed to be within walking distance to Funky Buddha (Easttown). I'm glad I took the intro class before taking the regular classes, because I'll admit it was a little intimidating and more challenging than I'm used to! Staff are super kind though and I've been enjoying my 4 classes/mo membership. The only thing I'm still trying to get used to is how large the classes are since I came from a small studio - hopefully that just means I'll make new friends at some point. I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking to get sweaty, active, and take a break from their brain.

I was very disheartened when I called to inquire about the rates. Funky Buddha gives discounts to the elderly, military, and students. I was born with spina bifida and am on SSI but there is no discount for people who are disabled and have low incomes because of disability. I'm hopeful that in the future Funky Buddha will take into consideration disabled people with low income should also qualify for discounted rates.

Some notes for those who have never been to this studio. The studio is very clean; the staff is kind, helpful, and welcoming;, and it was a good workout. BUT, some things that caught me off guard. And to contextualize, I live and practice extensively in a different state.
1: The rental mats are not sticky enough for a heated/humid class. If you are visiting or are new to yoga, you might slide around a bit.
2: FB does not offer much attention to breath work (no pranayama) or cueing of breaths through the flow. Thereβs nothing wrong with this!! Just know what youβre getting into: itβs more of a workout class than a traditional yoga practice.
3: This may be unique to the class I attended (and may also be a personal preference), but the transitions between poses could use a little bit of work. The flow felt a bit choppy at times. Better cues from the instructor could easily fix this though.
To reiterate: I had a pleasant experience at FB and would recommend (and Iβll be back when I am in town), but those who prefer more pranayama (like myself) should know that this place might not fit the bill.

In regards to yoga practice
This week I have been enjoying yoga at the Funky Buddha, not sure if itβs a mantra or social comment on the students condition being that itβs hot yoga, regardless while practicing Larissa a highly enjoyable instructor made multiple corrections unbidden and without reserve. Finding what is wrong in the room and gently guiding it back into place. What a joy it is to come to a studio and know that if I am in the wrong or could benefit from improvement it will be offered unabashedly, and what a greater joy when unsure as to my practice or posture to have the instructor walk by, observing, but not correcting as an affirmation that what I am doing in that moment is enough, and is proper for that time.

I'm studio shopping, and this is my review of Funky as it compares to some other places:
If you're looking for balance of mind body and spirit, if you're wanting to use your body to look within, to find connection, peace, spirituality, learn about the tradition of yoga... this is not the yoga studio for you.
IF however, you are looking for an excellent workout with upbeat, funky, and energized instructors... this is definitely the place for you. Funky buddha will help you lose weight, gain strength and endurance, and maybe even laugh a little bit as you try new poses and fall over with everyone else in the class. It's young, it's trendy, hip and funky. It makes yoga "cool". And kudos, because I think that they're introducing yoga to a lot of people that wouldn't normally take part. ...but this is a western yoga, it's not traditional yoga. And it is definitely not accessible to all body types. I saw many people struggling in the "intro" class, and I can't even imagine how they would ever be able to do even a "slow flow" class at Funky.
It's a great way to let off some steam (literally? figuratively?). These classes are very westernized, they don't encourage us to dig deep or think big. They DO give you a sexy body and they definitely make me feel empowered as I continue to grow strength and flexibility. It's a workout, not much more. With a one-month unlimited package I have lost 10 lbs and gained a lot more muscle definition (what? I have muscle under my belly skin? who knew!). Funky buddha's classes focus on the BODY above all else. Yoga as a way to get fit.
I will say that the instructors and atmosphere at the Holland location are a bit more of the yoga that I am looking for. It's more balancing, I still work my body hard but am encouraged to see how my body is often a reflection of what's happening inside. Noticing connections, finding balance, yadda yadda. I like that spirit medicine. Funky isn't really the place for that.
Hope this helps!

I am crazy about this place. Great for my mind and body. The instructors are smart, kind, wonderful people, and the studio is very clean and pleasant. I highly recommend it.
Helpful info: You can rent a mat and towel for, I believe, around $2, and there are blocks and straps to borrow for free. The absolute beginners class is a good place to start, so you can get used to the heat and learn the poses.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! All of the instructors are warm, friendly, and most of all encouraging. I wandered in without a clue about vinyasa and very little knowledge of yoga (though I was familiar with some of the poses from a yoga book I bought)...and while I was totally lost in the beginning (as many of you have expressed) I would like to pass along the sentiment of my instructor after the very first class I took, she said , "just keep coming - it will sink in - I promise." I did and it did. Though it took some time (as all good things do) but the journey has been and continues to be well worth it. So - to those of you that seem a little lost at first - PLEASE GO BACK - just keep going and I promise it will sink in! Namaste :-)

Whilst I like the classes I dislike the fact that regular specials such as GROUPON deals fill up the classes to the point that regulars ($ 89/month membership fee) have access denied - even if pre-registered for a class but not arrived 5 minutes prior to class start.
Given that I drive 15 min to class and am on a "full paying" membership (compared to the big portion of "student discount attendees" or Groupon) I feel the classes should be made available at all times as honor to their core customers.

I don't normally write reviews, but when I saw the Funky Buddha got some negative ones I felt I had to chime in. I began going to Funky Buddha about a month ago and I was instantly in love. I had never been to a yoga studio before, hadn't even practiced at my house! The staff there are the friendliest people you will ever meet and they (and the assistants) help you however and whenever they can to better your experience. And the people that go there are always friendly and open to meeting new people and no one judges if you are a beginner like myself.
Soon after I started there, things got rather complicated in my personal life, Funky Buddha was (and is) my place to go to clear my mind and hit reset. Not sure what I would do without that safe haven!

There is a reason why this studio is so popular, the teachers and staff are incredible at what they do. I started as a brand new yogi and continue to learn and grow with every practice. For me, the best thing is the sense of community at this place. Every one is so friendly and the studio welcomes people to come as they are. I can't recommend this place enough. Thank you Funky Buddha!

I agree with the other reviews that the instructors tend to just bark out the poses rather than explain how to get into the poses. Offered about zero cues or directions how to safely get into and out of poses or how to safely and properly transition from pose to pose. She even said during the class it was less important to do the pose right than it was to stay in the pose longer. This blew my mind, if you're in a pose with poor alignment it can cause serious damage to your spine, shoulders, etc.. She had us get into three poses during the class (bridge/wheel/crow) without any cues on how to set it up right. There were even people in the class who had never done yoga before. The staff does not seem to be trained in the proper practice of yoga or in the classic philosophy. It felt more like an aerobics class than a yoga class. The instructor gave off the vibe that you should feel bad or lazy if you weren't holding a pose, rather than honoring yourself and your own limits. These instructors need to be trained better.
The class also had about 50-60 some people in it which is overwhelming for a yoga class. They need to limit the amount of people in the class. You receive no attention and less instruction with this many people. It seems to be more about the money than the yoga. They even charged me 2 dollars to simply rent a towel.
This is really more of a fad yoga than classic yoga. If you're looking to develop a lifelong practice I do not recommend going here.

Preregistered and paid online, then they gave my spot away 5 min before the class started (I was delayed, but arrived at the time it starts). Tried to call ahead and make sure something like that wouldn't happen, but they wouldn't answer their phone. Will not return.

My girlfriends and I tried the absolute beginners class last week. None of us have ever taken a formal yoga class...and have really only done the few moves in P90X. This was a 2 hr class and let me tell you..it was amazing! The three instructors were so incredibly nice and they answered any questions people had. We would learn a few moves and then "flow" by going from move to move to move. The instructors would walk around and adjust you if you needed it but it was very helpful and they were very encouraging. We were in a class with other "absolute beginners" and it was a great environment. You didn't feel like you were being judged if you couldn't do the move just right. You definitely SWEAT but it feels so good! I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in trying Hot yoga!!

I went to the Sunday evening community class and briefly considered walking out after the first 5-10 min. I stayed, but would not go again. This is a fitness class. The instructor (Amanda, the night I went) wears a headset with a microphone and barks out the asana sequence like it's some kind of boot camp. I worry that there's no warning against beginners attending this class, as it is very fast-paced and there is almost zero instruction on how to properly flow through and be in the postures. People can be seriously injured in some of these poses, especially if they are unfamiliar with them and even more so if they are moving quickly between them trying to keep up with the class/instructor. My biggest disappointment though, and the reason I will not be back, is that for me yoga is a mindfulness practice. It can be very physically challenging, but without the mental, emotional, and spiritual challenge - the awareness, the connection between the physical and the mental/emotional/spiritual experience - it is nothing but another workout. This connection was completely absent from the class I attended.
bottom line: The Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse offers a workout for people familiar with yoga asanas. If that's something you're interested in, you should give them a try. If you're new to yoga or looking for a more well-rounded yoga practice, try another studio.. or at least avoid their community class.
