Potential new client, I walked in a few minutes before class the instructor wasnβt welcoming pushy related to the time. I decided to not join the class he made sure to let me know about the intermediate level as I have practiced for over 15 years. The pre judgment was a mood killer no thank you.

I signed up and paid for the uterine yoga class through their website a few hours before the class was supposed to start. I drove to the location they had on their webpage (Yemans location) and the door was locked and lights were shut off. Confused, I called the phone number provided on the webpage and the voicemail stated a different address a few blocks from that location. So I got in my car and drove to the other location, this address (Caniff location) had its doors locked as well and what looked like construction materials inside when I peered through the window. I again called the number and got voicemail. I looked online and there was indeed a class scheduled for the day and time I was there. Also, there was no note on the webpage about location change or construction. I am still waiting for a response to my message as to why this happened.

I have been going to IYDC for years - the teachers here are highly trained, supportive of all types of bodies, and the community the studio fosters is welcoming and wonderful! A hidden gem in Hamtramck that you should check out!

I thought I hated yoga until a massage therapist insisted I come to this studio, and I immediately realized that This Is Not Your Typical White Lady yoga studio. The healing-justice-centered and trauma-informed approach that the teachers at IYDC use when instructing this more philosophical, spiritual, and medicinal yoga lineage ensures that everyone, regardless of their (lack of) prior yoga experience, will be treated with respect and a more-thoughtful, no-one-left-behind practice. If you need a yoga practice where the teachers are trained through *thousands of hours* to ensure that each student is positioned correctly to avoid injury and assist in healing, THIS IS THE PLACE. I especially appreciated the co-op business model and its anti-racist approach to everything it does. I found a community at this studio, and found that the more I got involved, the more I knew about the co-op itself. But even just attending the in-person or online classes gave me an inner strength I needed to match my growing outer strength. I love this place.

Iyengar Yoga studio made me fall in love with yoga. Before this, I had tried different types of yoga and could never really connect with it. Also, many places just teach the movements, but the teachers here are years and years of training and know, not just the external body, but the internal organs. They teach in a way that welcomes people of all types of bodies and are incredibly knowledgeable on how to use yoga for healing the body, spirit, and mind. Their sliding scale fee makes it accessible to people of all income levels and I love how they center people of color and social justice. This is the THE studio that I recommend to everyone.

This a special studio. In my 30 years of exploring yoga in the United States, I have never known a studio that is active in breaking down the barriers of who is able to benefit from the practice. This is truly a place for all. This is where you can learn how to use your own tools to walk tall, with freedom in the body. I can not recommend this place enough.

Whenever I'm in Detroit, which is fairly regularly, I try to take a class at Iyengar Yoga Detroit. I've never been disappointed by the welcoming environment and level of teaching. If you're looking for a fashion-forward, lycra-infused yoga studio, look elsewhere. If you're seeking a genuine community dedicated to the teaching and practice of Iyengar Yoga, this is the place!

Another great co-op business in Hamtramck! I popped in for a special day after thanksgiving classβI appreciated the thoughtfulness of the instructor and their ability to support a large class of students and meet them at their different skill-levels. I really enjoyed the playful visualizations of the turkey and other birds as inspiration for movement. I was feeling low energy, and this class really re-energized me for a family outing! So grateful we have them in the neighborhood π

IYDC is a dream! This welcoming studio has empathetic, generous teachers aimed at supporting and encouraging you. The studio is beautiful and charming, featuring an amazing wooden rope wall. The teachers are wonderful, extremely knowledgeable, curious, and energetic. I especially appreciate George's beginner classes and Erin's Uterine health class!
If you've ever considered trying yoga, or are looking for a new practice, I would strongly recommend this spot! In fact, I have been lovingly teased by friends for how often I bring up Iyengar as a solution for their aches and pains.
It's also worth mentioning, that this is the first practice type and studio that's helped me stick with a fitness practice--I have been going for over a year. I feel an increase in physical ability, but also mental capability and calm.
In addition to it being a wonderful studio, I also appreciate that it is cooperatively owned, with a commitment to accessible classes for everyone! It's located on one of the charming main streets of Hamtramck.
THANK YOU IYENGAR YOGA DETROIT! <3

I have been going to IYDC for almost 10 years and it is such a supportive place to do yoga. Great teachers, great community. Super adaptive to any bodies, any injuries, any stage of life- while also challenging us to grow as people and in our practice.
