They will lie and mislead you by insisting you must go to your “home club” to cancel your membership — you do not. You can cancel at any location, at any time. They will also claim that “only the manager can cancel,” which is just another tactic to delay or discourage you from ending your membership. The entire process feels intentionally deceptive.
Do not waste your money. Equipment is often broken, locations are inconsistent, and the staff are generally unhelpful and dismissive. Many customers report the exact same barriers to canceling, and LA Fitness is currently involved in a class-action lawsuit regarding deceptive cancellation practices.
If you choose to deal with them, record your calls and document every interaction for your own protection.

The gym is terrible. They force you to come in person to cancel, and then bounce you from manager to manager with no resolution. The facilities are consistently dirty, equipment is often broken, and I’ve gone to three different locations in one day where every pool was closed. The staff is rude, and the customer service line is completely unhelpful—they don’t seem to know how to handle even basic issues.
I would leave zero stars if I could. Do not waste your money here. Pricing is inconsistent, the focus is clearly on squeezing dollars out of members, and the company is already facing a class-action lawsuit for their unfair and egregious cancellation policies.

I literally felt unwelcome. I still don’t understand why the guy made me watch him train two new employees after a very weird interaction when he could’ve just helped me but instead took my license, told me to wait… I don’t understand what happened and I asked others and it didn’t happen to them so… do better guys!

Signature La Fitness on Woodward in Royal Oak. Smaller than it looks but busy esp post New Years. Pool plus basketball court too at this location. At least 40+ treadmills w/TV which works on maybe half+. Exercise & spin studios and yoga, zumba,etc. Classes. Especially being a signature this club needs a refresh. Good front desk coverage & towel services for some memberships

Gym is clean for the most part. Except whoever is supposed to be cleaning the showers in the men’s locker room is not doing their job. There’s been a used bandaid in one of the showers for a week now. They even filled the soap but didn’t remove the bandaid and other trash in the shower.

The indoor cycle bikes in this location are in desperate need of repair. Many of the ones that do not say “Scheduled for Service” are not calibrated correctly and are extremely difficult to ride as soon as the resistance is increased past 10.
Please!!
1. Calibrate all of the indoor cycle bikes so their resistance is similar
2. Fix the ones that say “Scheduled for Service”

I just moved back up here and was hoping to find a gym home. Got a guest pass to check this one out and drove all the way out here only to find out they apparently can't activate a guest past after 6pm. Last time I checked it just goes through a computer system so you mean to tell me none of the 6 ppl sitting at the front desk doing absolutely nothing know how to activate a guest pass? At any rate, it would've been super helpful to know that ahead of time and to not come all the way out here for nothing. Not a single one of them offer any options to try to help, they acted like I was bothering them from their lollygagging. I liked the LA Fitness back home but customer service up here is clearly different. So I couldn't get a workout in and this was a complete waste of time. Thanks for nothing, no I will not be signing up at this location. 😒

I am visiting from AZ and went to this gym because I have an all clubs membership. The Smith machines are OLD and the only bench to move around is also old.
I also have never been to a gym where people don't put their weights away to this level. At one point 13 pieces of equipment had weights left on them not to includedumbells left lying around. I started putting them back between sets.

Tried giving this place a chance for two months and then tonight I saw a man's entire behind (bare butt) while he was exercising. I did my best to remain calm, but then I noticed dried vomit all over one of the cable towers. I'm told the only way I can cancel my membership is by speaking to the manager between 9am and 5pm. Conveniently, I am employed and work those hours. All of this is disappointing because I live very close and the gym has a good selection of equipment for the price. But (butt?), you also probably shouldn't let vomit become dry while members pay nearly $40 per month either.

Adam was extremely helpful with my renewal process over the phone. He was patient and kind! I explained my dilemma and he apologized for another club’s unprofessional behavior and service. The only reason it took five minutes was because I was unprepared and my card was not in my possession. Adam waited and made me feel valued as a long time la fitness member. Great place to workout, great variety of classes included with membership which is a huge bonus. Fair price for all that you’re getting with the membership. Lots of equipment which is a bit outdated but with all we get for the price I still give them Two thumbs up. Also it’s very clean inside and great location
I’m here to edit my previous review, I joined this gym several months ago and I had to adjust my review from five stars to three stars because the machines are just so outdated. It makes working out difficult at times. In this place, definitely need more dumbbell selection for the amount of people that are there. I always go when it’s not so busy and it’s still difficult to get dumbbells that I need. For a place this size, the dumbbell selection should be much higher. disappointed that I had to take off two stars, but the machines are just too outdated and many times they don’t work properly.

While my girlfriend was working out, three separate witnesses observed a man taking close-up photos of her from behind without her knowledge or consent. All three individuals brought this to her attention and immediately reported it to the gym’s management. Despite multiple eyewitnesses corroborating the incident, the staff stated they "can’t and won’t do anything" because the individual denied the behavior.
We are deeply disturbed by this response. It is unacceptable for a fitness facility to disregard the safety and comfort of its members—especially when multiple people confirm inappropriate conduct. By refusing to take any meaningful action, this gym has shown a troubling level of complacency toward harassment.
This experience has made it clear to us that LA Fitness does not prioritize the well-being of its members, particularly women. We no longer feel safe or respected in this environment, and we will not be returning.

Equipment is always broken, overcrowded due to other locations nearby closing down, and they make it intentionally difficult to cancel your membership. It is not possible to do on the app or website and apparently you need to either call them or do so in person.

8/19/25 Still a great place to come light traffic in the early afternoon.
6/9/25: Update - I have raised the rating from 4 to 5, I have been going for over 3 months now and it has continued to be a friendly place that is well maintained.
I have read a lot of reviews and was concerned that the gym was going to be dirty and the aerobics machines were going to be offline. That was not the case I have been going there for a week and all the aerobics machines except for one treadmill were up. Of the steppers they have six three had service coming and everything else was running. I do not use the locker room so I can't speak to that but the rest of the facility was very clean some of the equipment is older and that is evidenced by rubber grips that are worn but in general it is a very nice gym. In addition the staff at the front is very friendly and very helpful.

Scam signed up for 2 months charged me for 3 even though they said I would have to chose to pay for a 3rd month instead of an auto payment which was obviously a lie asked if I could have my money back as I told them I wouldn’t have even been able to go at all this 3rd month and they refused to help horrible old place, scam and not to mention the one dude who takes up all the weights in the corner of the free weight section actually the reason I did not want that 3rd month so not go here

This location is significantly is worse than any LA fitness in Michigan! I visited yesterday for a brief workout and the air conditioning was still not working!! And two pieces of equipment have been in repair for over three months. Look at my picture.
It is concerning that this gym has not undergone any renovations, which raises questions about its future. The gym that was on Telegraph was never renovated or kept up and they eventually closed it. I won’t be surprised this gym is next.

This LA Fitness uses massive amounts of poison herbicides and pesticides on the vegetation surrounding the facility. They spray almost daily. I would not recommend going here if you have any respiratory issues or if you are health conscious.

I feel that my review (along with others) for this place are redundant at this point. This is the most unkept facility I've visited. Windows and glass ALWAYS dirty, showers have mold (I've submitted pictures before), pool filmy (can't see bottom of pool), spa stays out of order, old gum that has turned black dots the entrance walkway and stairs. They keep the easy access rest room by the pool locked because they say people go in and sleep all day? Maybe have staff check and remove them? I'm sure people pee in the pool as a result. 😣 They can't seem to keep a maintenance person. It's a train wreck and it's called a Signature Club? The Aqua Fit instructor Kakeyta is the ONLY reason I go. I speak as a pool user, I really don't use the machines on the floor.

I swear I love this location. The energy is always cool and respectful, the equipment always work, and the hot tub and sauna is always functional. It’s huge and spacious as well. The employees are always super nice. The locker room and bathrooms are always clean (which is my FAVORITE part) and I never hear of anyone stealing from this location.

I've been extremely disappointed with my experience at LA Fitness lately. The facility frequently runs out of sanitization wipes, which is concerning for maintaining hygiene standards. Additionally, several pieces of equipment that require servicing have been left in disrepair for weeks now, affecting the overall quality of the gym experience. I recently joined and I’m a little bit disappointed. I have been going to edge fitness for the past year and I really loved it but it takes me 20 minutes to get there so I went online and joined LA Fitness as its less than 10 mins from my home. Today was my first time there. The first thing that took me back was that the air in the club was very stagnant and almost musty But OK it’s a gym. One of the things I adored about edge was the cleanliness. The machines were always clean and any given time I was there working out. I saw employees actually wiping down machines. The equipment at LA Fitness is very dirty compared to what I’ve been used to with edge the ladies locker room is dark and a little outdated compared to edge. The sauna is nice. I particularly like the eucalyptus or menthol that’s in there, but it’s very dark. I’m hoping that my experience improves but so far I’m a little disappointed and almost wish I didn’t sign a year contract but I’m hoping as I continue to go things will get better

The gym I go to is in royal oak. It is very worn down dirty, lockers are missing doors. The front door was broken x 3 months. Steps have broken off and are dangerous. They don't seem to care about their clients. It may explain why theyre closing so many of their gyms in southeastern Michigan

Updating previous post(below). Major shout out to Rob and the LA Fitness Royal Oak team that has been working tirelessly to improve gym conditions. They provide signature service and strive to get the gym to excellence.
Nine new stair climbers. Equipment that's been broken for months repaired. HVAC and hot water in women's locker room restored so the floors are dry. The front door has finally been fixed. Looking forward to continued progress.
Visit Rob to check out one of the best located gyms with great classes...Kellie's Zumba, Randy's step and weekend morning cycle and yoga classes are excellent and make membership worth it. Still no acknowledgment or response from corporate...auto reply could at least be used.
Previous post...Signature sloppy. Corporate Management of the club is nonexistent. Have contacted them several times without response. On site staff are friendly but can't fix what's wrong. Broken, old equipment. Crumbling stairs, hvac is sub par so floors are wet, locker room has hot water some times... and the list goes on. No changes in a decade. Excellent location & classes but definitely not signature otherwise.

On 12/02/2024 For some reason the “manager” or whatever his position is named “Robert” ruined my experience and I’ll most likely never come back to this location. During a sit down to sign me up for a guest pass, he had the audacity to tell my sister to “Stop-Talking” and motioned his hand out for her to stop talking. It honestly caught her off guard and it took me aback, that he would fix his mouth in a “joking” way “as he says” to address her in such an unprofessional way. Might I mention he said we had attitudes when we walked in. Huh? Where did that even come from? Actually I was getting off the phone my with my grandmother who was praying for us, saying she loved us, and to be safe. I came as a guest because my sister said she had a guest pass. When she scanned in, it appeared she didn’t have the correct credentials. He seemed to profile and target us with unwarranted energy and mannerisms from jump. He wanted to “show us” that we were wrong after I mentioned, how we just worked out the other day together after scanning in. The way he told her to “Stop-Talking” wasn’t in a joking manner, it was very “matter of fact” with the tone of authority as if she should just shut up mid-sentence. There’s no justification what-so-ever for an LA fitness employee working in customer service to ever say those words together. He stepped out of line and after my expression of distaste and request, he apologized to her for his actions and tried to make light of the situation when he realized our offense. I appreciate his efforts but the damage had already been done. We didn’t feel comfortable moving forward and working out after that encounter, so we left. We haven’t been back since. My perspective of that location has been spoiled and it’s left a bitter taste. I’ll most likely never go back. Thank you for your time!

THIS GYM IS AWFUL. Everything is always broken. ALWAYS BUSY - This location has absorbed the other members from 3 nearby locations that have closed so it is busy no matter what time you go. The front door even has a "Scheduled for Service" sign which might as well refer to the entire gym. Some machines have been broken for over a year with no plans to fix them (per the manager himself). No one cleans the gym either - dirty all the time and smells. There are very loud conversations amongst the members about how much they hate the gym and wish LA Fitness would maintain it.

Easily EASILY one of the worst gym I’ve ever been a member at. I’ve seen MONTHS go by with machines broken and no attempt to fix them, which wouldn’t be such a problem if machines weren’t already so limited due to overcrowding. It would be an understatement to say that half the treadmills don’t work, so you can count cardio out too during peak times. This place is in dire need of management change, the only thing keeping this place in business is the location itself, honestly this place puts the LA Fitness name to shame. If you’re hoping for at least cleanliness, hope again. I’ve been a member, regretfully, for over a year hoping it would improve but Ive started looking elsewhere for membership, I advise those looking to not even bother trying here unless desperate. Really exhausted rating this run down "SIGNATURE" location. Corporate really doesn't care. We've complained till it's redundant. I endure because it's 5 minutes from my house (so I can go home and shower) and has the best aqua fit instructor anywhere. I honestly feel that a shut down with a complete renovation is the only solution. Anyway if you have a germ phobia, close your eyes shut tight and you'll be alright.

I waited for two hours at my local LA Fitness to get help canceling my training membership. When I finally got assistance, I mentioned wanting to use a different card, and they reassured me that the cancellation could be handled over the phone.
About 20 minutes later, I received a text saying, “I won’t be available until 8 PM tomorrow, or you can call me tomorrow.” This entire process feels like a scam designed to make canceling memberships unnecessarily difficult. How can one person be the only one responsible for personal training cancellations?
Furthermore, my recruiter didn’t even acknowledge me—he outright refused to help or check in on me. It feels like the staff picks and chooses who gets assistance and who doesn’t.
This experience has been incredibly frustrating and unprofessional.

This fitness center is filthy. Worst location I’ve been to. Almost every piece of cardio equipment is broken and rusting. Pay to go literally anywhere else. Locker rooms are disgusting. Don’t waste your money here.

If you look at my review history, I very rarely give poor reviews; I don't like to do that. But I joined this gym for a couple months and was pretty disappointed, especially given that I don't think I'm super hard to please when it comes to the gym. The facilities were always clean and smelled good, and parking is great-those are the positives. But the machines are just always constantly broken and never getting fixed; I joined so I could do some cardio and weight training but ended up compromising on the machines and machine hopping just to find the least broken treadmill/elliptical each day. Keep in mind this was over multiple months and I never saw a single machine repaired. And I never saw any hints of it starting to improve either. There are some really nice Planet Fitness facilities (much cheaper and with working machines) and local gyms nearby, so I would definitely look there instead or to slightly higher end gyms-it's just not worth it. And they make you cancel in person during business hours which just really really annoyed me.
The people who work there are kind and helpful I should say-this is not a reflection of them, just a reflection of not getting your money's worth at this gym.

Rob was really nice in setting us up with a guest pass and he was very friendly.
Reduced the rating: today went in with "VIP" guest pass which I assumed was a different tier. The lady at the counter this morning 820am on nov 16, did not honor the VIP guest pass, citing one pass per 6 months. Could have been clearer regarding regular guest pass and VIP guest pass. Wasted time. Not paying 20$ dropin just for a yoga class. Rob wass nice before so i will be fair and put it 3 (avg between 1 and 5).

Flat out the most disgusting gym I’ve ever workout in. They seem fully staffed but everything is either broken or smells like piss. The whole dumbbell section smells like urine constantly. All the sweat in the men’s sauna pools in one corner.

This LA Fitness has the most outdated equipment in all of metro-Detroit.The horrendous smell through out the gym no fans in the ceiling and minimum circulation. The Stair Climbers are broken. Only two out of about six of them work properly. I guess LA Fitness will be going out of business soon because the Signature Gym is the “SIGNATURE SLUM!”

The worst location I've been to in Detroit Metro, and it's a signature club!!! The only reason I still come here is because of the pool, also the fitness classes and sauna. Equipment is CONSTANTLY broken. The hot tub was down for months!!! and now it's not operating again!!! Every time I go on a cardio machine I have to double check if it's going to work, which is 20% of the time that it actually functions without any problems. The low row machine has been down for at least half a year. They charge for towels and basketball court access now. In the summer, it's hotter inside the gym than outside. Always smells like ass and they never turn on AC. The mats are horrendous, everyone in fitness classes brings their own because they know. There's almost no dumbbells lighter than 15 lbs, I always have to go to the personal training area to get some. Now their front door is broken, again!!! No wonder they only have 3.4 stars, but I'm surprised it's not lower.

I joined this gym for the hot tub and pool while rehabilitating from an injury. Both are randomly closed about 50% of the time I try to come and use them. No updates or notifications are sent out. It has gotten to the point where I call and ask before every time I visit. I cancelled my membership after three months.

The starirmaster machines are outdated and most are inoperative. A lot of the other equipment is hit or miss if its going to work. Free weights are missing and no Bosa Balls. Other free weights (hand held) are virtually non-existence. And the towels,what u pay extra for are scratchy.

I’m a staff Sargent in the US Army and I came home to attend a funeral last week. I went online to activate a guest pass for the Royal Oak location but when I went in to use it the Manager Ron told me the location didn’t accept guest passes. I was confused considering I had researched and received my pass via email but Ron insisted he couldn’t honor it. He charged me to utilize the gym despite me explaining to him the circumstances and my membership with “active and fit” which is a national gym pass. A few days later my friend came in and she was able to obtain a 30 day pass for free by the same man (Ron) who told me they didn’t accept passes. I feel deeply disrespected and disregarded. I would like a refund! Horrible experience and leadership!

I had an absolutely horrible experience when my friend and I went to LAF in royal oak to try out a 2 day guest pass. The manager Ron was trying to convince us to buy a membership even tho we told him we were comparing 2 gyms and just wanted a short pass. He told us the we were there to WASTE his time. He then held us at his desk for 30 minutes insisting that he was going to take his time bc we were wasting his by not joining. He insisted I did a body fat test then proceeded to tell me I have 53 pounds of access fat on my body. He was trying to be rude and hurtful. Mind you I’m 5’6 and 175 lol. I would never join this gym as long as he’s a manager

the layout is pretty standard for an LA Fitness, but this one in particular is always a bit dirty, smells bad and has broken equipment. Today, i almost fell because i tripped on a broken step on the way in the building. I usually just keep my head down, mind my own business and dont say anything - but this is supposed to be a "signature" series which i thought should have been nicer than a standard, but it doesn't meet that standard.
Another member told me that a particular machine had been broken for a year... i dont know if that is actually true or not because i dont usually go to this location.

This location has really taken a hit over the years. It’s dated, smells terrible in locker room and gym floor, a lot of equipment needs repairs, and they don’t have the they under control. 9/10 was my last day going there. I could stand the smell AND most of the equipment was being hogged. I report the locker room smell to the front desk. I hope they took action. It made me nauseous

The hot tub has literally been down for 3-4 months now. This “signature” club is filthy, especially, the wet area, where they allow anyone in any condition, wearing anything to come in there. Literally saw sweaty people come from the basketball court, fully clothed, strip down to their underwear right there at the side and jump in, no shower no nothing, with all their filth and the employees couldn’t care less. Not to mention the fact that this gym always smells like marijuana, people are literally in the parking lot, smoking marijuana, and then they come in the gym. You could tell anybody you want, but the employees again couldn’t care less.

I joined this gym in June, but a recent experience was deeply disappointing. A couple of months ago, a staff member whistled at me from the reception desk, making me very uncomfortable.
I reported the incident via email on 7/18 and have received no response. In my email, I mentioned that there have been a few instances where individuals made inappropriate comments, such as "god damn." The third incident occurred around 9:43 PM as I was about to leave the gym, when someone whistled at me and then acted like nothing happened. Despite making eye contact with Rob a few days after I sent the email, my concerns were ignored. Prior to that, he also ignored an email with a simple question on 7/11 for no reason.
When I joined, two of the StairMaster machines were broken. As of August, only two StairMaster machines are working, meaning the problem still hasn't been fully addressed.
Also, Rob told me that I can cancel my membership anytime with anyone, but my contract says that I have to mail a form to California. The page where you download the form from isn’t working, adding to the frustration.
As a paying member, I expect a safe and respectful environment. The lack of communication and response from management is unacceptable. Until this matter is resolved, I cannot recommend this gym.

I’ve been trying to cancel for over a year. They make it nearly impossible.. you have to either print out their cancellation form an then MAIL IT or go in person an cancel.. which I have. An they “dont know” when their sales staff will be in to cancel it.
The front desk woman was rude. Very short to start with, an then when I explained I’ve been trying to cancel.. an asked when someone would be in for their job she said “I don’t know, an that’s not my department so I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t have anything to do with that”
I suffer with extreme social anxiety.. so coming here today alone just to cancel was enough.. but to now have to come back just to see if someone is even here for their job? I guess I’ll call from now on.

Now with cockroaches. Updating this as this location has only continued to crumble apart. The elevator is constantly broken. The stairs are literally crumbling apart. The equipment is constantly broken. There are buckets that catch water leaking from the ceiling, in multiple locations. The drinking fountains are regularly broken. Trash bins are constantly overflowing. The locker rooms are full of garbage and soaking wet towels. They are constantly out of towels. This location has no business being a "signature" club.
