I cannot speak highly enough about Rusty Barbell and its owner Phil Harrington and one of his personal trainers Jess. My personal trainer Jess has tailored my workout perfectly. She is always on time and prepared. She is very knowledgeable and clear with her instructions. Since I have never been to a gym before she has made this a very positive experience and I look forward to gaining more confidence and strength in time to come. Thanks Rusty Barbell!

I recently tried out the Rusty Barbell with Phil Harrington and wow. I cannot say enough good things about his gym. As a plus size woman it can be difficult to find a gym to feel comfortable in and supported. Phil's environment is just that. He took the time to wake up me through each exercise, and come up with alternatives when he noticed that a specific exercise wasn't going to work for me at that time. He continuously pushed me within my limits, and encouraged me. I cannot praise this gym and Phil enough. Thank you Phil for your support!

Can’t say enough good things about this gym. Our children went here as part of their track & field practice, then after the season was over they continued on with a personal training program. They worked primarily with coaches Phil and Jenna. These coaches are truly special. They worked with children of different ages and abilities (mine were 6, 6, and 7 at the time). It was impressive how they went back and forth between coaching young children, then coaching what appeared to be high school and collegiate athletes, and also with adults, some who were clearly very fit, and others who appeared to be inexperienced. They made our family feel welcome, kept them engaged, and created a safe environment where I wasn’t afraid of anyone getting hurt. They are doing great things at this gym. We hope to come back again as our kids grow and try different sports!

Rusty Barbell is an amazing place to workout. I played NCAA college hockey, and Coach Phil is without a doubt the best strength and conditioning coach I have ever had. I started with him three months ago in hopes to improve my speed and strength, and I have improved more in those three months than the past two years combined. He has a very holistic approach to coaching where he educates you on all aspects of training including form, proper recovery, and what to eat which has been incredibly helpful. Most importantly though, he wants his athletes to succeed as much as they want to succeed. He will give you everything you need to reach your goals, you just need to do it.

Phil has worked with me to set realistic goals in my fitness and continues to work with me to improve. His coaching style makes him very approachable and makes me want to succeed. The best part about working with Phil is that he is always willing to provide an additional demonstration of a technique, if needed, and he will always explain what the goals and expectations are for each exercise. He has even provided me suggestions for activities to work on outside of my personal training sessions. I would recommend Phil to anyone who is looking for a coach or personal trainer.

Every time I train at Rusty Barbell, I feel like an absolute beast. Coach P has the keys to unlock your best you, all you have to do is want it! Whether you’re training to power lift or looking for strength/conditioning for everyday use, this is the spot. Phil puts a lot of thought into the weekly programs, which can be modified for beginners and advanced athletes. The group classes are filled with super nice and motivated people, and every day I learn something new. In the four months I’ve been coming, I’ve gained so much strength and woke up muscles I never knew I had. Can’t wait to see where this takes me. Definitely recommend!

I’ve worked out in several facilities, with countless trainers, in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. None are as thorough, knowledgeable, and transparent as Coach Phil. It’s much easier to accomplish your fitness goals when you know WHY you’re doing a movement, then Coach Phil shows you HOW to do it properly. His programs are fun, fresh, adaptable, and effective. I enter workouts excited to see what new exercises are in my program, and leave feeling accomplished because I tried/conquered something new. Call Coach Phil, set up a training session, and email me thank you. You won’t find a better trainer in the area. Shoot, maybe even the state.

I have been working out with Phil for about a month now. Right from the beginning, he recognized my needs, and has helped me work towards my goals. He does not push me to the point of injury, but instead just enough to help me grow and gain confidence in my abilities and potential. I have had a great experience working with phil at rusty barbell. Phil works with me to design a program to meet my needs. I am getting married in October and phil has developed a "sweating for the wedding" program. I will be extra confident on my wedding day now that I'm all toned up! With so many fitness programs and trainers saturating the fitness market it's hard to know what program will work and what trainer will be committed to you and your goals. Phil (the owner of Rusty Barbell) is all of those things. He deeply cares for his clients and makes sure each program is tailored to each client's wants. I've been working with Phil for a little bit over a year now and I can say with confidence that he is one of the most talented, hard working and dedicated coaches I've ever come across. He truly cares about the relationships he has with people he coaches and it shows in his daily communication and insight. Lastly, he is realistic about the workouts he programs in order to make sure he is making them challenging while also ensuring you don't get injured or pushing yourself past discomfort. I recommend Phil and his programming to anyone wanting to make progress/get fit while being able to work with a wonderful trainer.

Highly recommended! - I have been training with Phil for close to a year now. As a trainer, Phil is very motivating and pushes you just enough towards achieving new and realistic goals. Coach P’s routines strike the perfect balance between a fun and tough workout. They are dynamic, with a variety of movements so you never get bored. Phil is also excellent with understanding muscular injuries and helps with recovery and strengthening of tissue. I’m especially appreciative of how accommodating he has been with any changes in scheduling. Thank you for helping me get this strong, Phil!
