Heather is knowledgeable about adapting exercises to what your body needs, while also pushing you to work hard. I feel stronger after I started 2x/week private sessions and now tower classes just several months ago. She is also warm, friendly, and has created such a welcoming environment at Pilates Barn. Love the location as well!

I came into the Pilates Barn knowing next to nothing about Pilates. I had been looking for lower intensity workouts, and walking was my consistent practice before trying Pilates. I used to favor weight training + light cardio or HIIT workouts.
I started with a private session with Heather on the Cadillac. The moves & exercises were all familiar, but challenging in new ways. Heather is great at motivating & explaining how to properly perform each exercise. Having a private session before classes helped me feel more confident in what I was doing.
I have now done weekly tower classes for the last 4 weeks, sometimes twice in a week. Private sessions are great, but the group classes have a really fantastic energy! Everyone I have met in classes has been welcoming, helpful, and someone to turn to & say “wow that was hard” haha Each class has similar exercises, but there is always something different and challenging. I never feel bored or wonder about the time.
I experience minimal post workout soreness, but I always feel that I’ve worked out hard. I have seen & felt changes in my strength and body already. I’m looking forward to trying other trainers & Reformer classes soon!

The Pilates Barn is a wonderful place! Not only is the space beautiful and filled with natural light, the instructors are amazing. I have worked mostly with Heather. She is truly a genius when it comes to "reading" the body and how it moves, and supporting my beginnings as someone new to pilates. I have been getting so much from both private and group sessions. Honestly, I can’t say enough about The Pilates Barn in Ann Arbor and its creator and owner Heather Dupuis. I taken classes and personal sessions with her and her staff over many years now. She always takes the time to find the right “ fit” for me… meaning an instructor that not only understands my skill level and fitness needs, but personally as well, which for me is a big bonus! The atmosphere is beautiful…. Open space, lots of natural lighting, beautiful local artwork on the walls, and the finest equipment to work with.
Presently I am working with a new instructor… Claudia… taking her class on The Reformer… she’s a breath of fresh air! Diligent, knowledgeable, has great communication skills so that I can follow her directions easily, Committed to proper technique, overall good instructor, and always has a smile on her face.
I get so much out of her classes that I will be also taking private sessions with her!

Liz (along with other trainers I have taken classes with pre-pandemic) are all knowledgeable and do a great job trying to adapt classes and private sessions to your personal needs. This place is absolutely top-notch. I have been here since they opened (and before that with the same instructors at VieFit), and could not be more impressed. This is truly classical Pilates with an immense amount of focus on perfecting your form and getting the most out of each session. The various instructors are all amazing and offer a wide variety of classes (Tower, Reformer, mat, private sessions) and times. The overall atmosphere is extremely welcoming to newcomers of all different levels. To top of it off, the space on the 3rd floor of Kerrytown is really cool. Hands-down, these classes are the favorite part of my week.

I have been training with Melissa for 20 years, both at Vie and the Pilates Barn. In my early years, I did strength training and complained when it got too hard. In my older years, I did Pilates training and complained about that because it wasn’t hard enough. My experience with Melissa has been absolutely terrible wonderful as has been the Pilates Barn. All the trainers at the Pilates Barn are wonderful to be with.

I've worked with Melissa weekly for a few years. She is an outstanding instructor. She is always fine tuning our sessions, with increasing complexity and challenge. She also watches my movements very carefully, constantly making minor adjustments to my position and posture, for maximum benefit to core strengthening.

Absolutely love this place. First, they're clearly the classical Pilates experts in the area. Exceptionally knowledgeable instructors with significant experience. Second, the equipment is top notch Gratz and they have multiple of everything; very well maintained. Third, the space is spectacular. In the historic Godfrey building smack in the middle of the vibrant buzz of Kerrytown Markets. Alone on the top floor with expansive views of the west side, beautiful brick walls, floor-to-ceiling windows with gobs of natural light. There's just no beating this experience for core strengthening and flexibility improvement.

Beautiful loft setting with ample natural light and warm contemporary design. A calming studio in which to practice and contemplate pilates on a variety of apparatuses. Heather's Tower and Reformer classes are challenging and centering. She is always upbeat, inspiring and friendly. For any ability level.

I started Pilates at The Pilates Barn under the guidance of Heather. I began with a few private lessons, which was a great way to acclimate to the program. The private lessons were highly beneficial to my sore back, and these lessons gave me confidence that Pilates was a good fit for me. I am now enrolled in my second series of group (tower) classes, which I am taking with Heather. Again, excellent communication, and excellent instincts with each student. Classes are small enough so that each student is provided with ample attention. Can’t say enough positive about my amazing experience here!

The virtual stretch class I've been taking for almost a year has been really good for my high blood pressure. I haven't done before-and-after meter readings but I bet it's quite a bit lower by the end of the 45-minute session. The teacher, Heather Dupuis of The Pilates Barn in Kerrytown, is terrific. She pays attention to form without getting on the case and somehow (she-devil that she is) she knows just when to add some challenge if you look like you can handle it. Not in a mean way, just always striving to improve mobility. She also changes the routine from week to week so I never get jaded.
You can take the class at your convenience, as Heather tapes each week. You can access it at a the time works for you. The live stream is on Tuesdays at 8:00am-8:45am. It's strenuous I guess, but you are lying down the whole time. I feel totally refreshed after class.

I have been working with Michelle for about a month now and it has been a fantastic experience! I came in with little / no experience or knowledge of pilates and Michelle not only welcomed that, but put time and effort to meet me where I was at. She allowed me to progress and learn in a way that was comfortable for me and my body. I very much enjoy Michelle's style of teaching- which is encouraging, confident and works on strengthening one's own self-efficacy while being kind throughout. Michelle feels like not only an instructor but a supportive friend throughout her class! She is extremely professional, conscientious and wonderful to work with. I don't want stop doing pilates!

Fantastic location and atmosphere! Top notch team of instructors. Immediately walking into The Pilates Barn, I knew I found my home. The space will blow you away with all the natural sunlight (windows wrapping around the studio from all sides, and the ceiling is loaded with skylights), high lofty ceilings, exposed brick, open space, and fully equipped with Gratz equipment. It feels like something you'd stumble upon in New York city-- but 3x bigger! Going to The Pilates Barn is an experience beyond just Pilates. I always end up grabbing a coffee at Sweetwaters on my way out, and then browsing my favorite local shops and markets (Everyday Wines, Sparrow Market, Found...just to name a few). It's just a great vibe! Parking is easy. There is ample parking surrounding the building. Most importantly, the instructors are exceptional. Heather, who is the founder of the studio, has a real knack at attracting kind, smart, and fun instructors. They are infectious. I always leave feeling mentally energized and physically stronger.
I personally train with Heather (founder). She is professional, accessible, and she has the eye of an eagle and corrects with impeccable detail. Most importantly (what stands out) is that Heather's classes are about her clients' needs at the moment, not about her. She starts on time. She shuts off her personal brain, and she devotes 100% of her attention to the body (bodies) in front of her. I'd highly recommend The Pilates Barn, Heather, and all of the instructors that she hires. Big thumbs up. Go check them out! You have to see and experience it for yourself to really grasp what I'm saying. Words don't cut it. The minute you walk in you will feel what I am writing about.

I have been doing Pilates with Heather and her staff for a number of years. It has been the best type of exercise I have tried. The trainers tailor my workouts to avoid straining my neck muscles (which have chronic spasms leading to headaches). I have gained a lot of strength and continue to be flexible as I age. The studio is roomy, comfortable, and well equipped. The staff is top notch. I couldn't recommend it more.

Great training, great space, great times! I never thought I’d ever be the person who looks forward to exercise- this place and the people there especially changed that!! I get the perfect balance of support and being challenged to up my expectations. I feel better, I move better and the studio space focuses your attention but looks great as well! The staff- especially Heather and Angela Loudermilk- have empowered me to branch out and to try new, different activities I probably would have never done on my own. And they help adapt your total plans over time- I’ve mixed up training online (cardio, strength and stretching), learned about nutrition and habits, and along with my individual sessions with Angela that I guard more than any other outside activity I have, I’ve taken mat, reformer, and Tower classes. Heather's classes at The Pilates Barn and Wellness Studio are varied and challenging. As a longtime endurance athlete (cycling/running), I like--and expect--to be challenged. I'm constantly amazed at both Heather's encouragement and her strength in the virtual spinning classes I take 2x a week. And the January Eight-week spin challenge is something I look forward to.
Whether you are a longtime or a brand new athlete, there's a place for you in the Pilates Barn and Wellness Community. Since I've been enrolled in the virtual spinning classes, I've boosted my fitness and flexibility immensely. The Pilates Barn is truly a breath of fresh air in the Ann Arbor wellness community. Not only is the space itself bright and beautiful, but the community Heather has fostered is even brighter. You will enter feeling comfortable and welcomed each time, and you will leave each class/session feeling challenged but also excited for the next time you can return. I've rarely experienced that with workouts! The tower experience is phenomenal. You will feel supported while pushing your body to be it's strongest self. The instructors work with each individual student to make sure they understand the exercises and will showcase the necessary adjustments for any injuries or sore spots. I go to the Pilates Barn 3-5 times a week and I love it! It's a beautiful space and the staff is so friendly and welcoming. I love Melissa's tower classes and her private sessions. She is helping me get stronger everyday. The Reformer classes with Katie are so much fun and Katie is very encouraging. The Pilates Barn is a beautiful, bright, airy and serene space to get superb quality, classical Pilates training in downtown Ann Arbor. I have known and trained with most of the trainers on staff and can say without hesitation that they have superior knowledge of classical Pilates. They are insightful, able to adapt to the individual regardless of body type, injury or personal goals.
Specifically, I have taken private sessions from Melissa Walcott for a good portion of the last decade. She is extremely detailed in her understanding of exercise purpose and getting her clients into the right position for their body to experience the work of Pilates...challenging you, but with an ever-present attention to safety. A nurse and certified personal trainer originally, Melissa has the patience, body knowledge, Pilates expertise and experience to train anyone. Additionally, she is one of the kindest and most positive people I know. She made such an impact on my life, that I am now training to be a certified classical Pilates instructor too!
Your health is a priority, and your time and money will be well invested at The Pilates Barn!
