Thrive has been an integral part of my sons strength training. He started training with him is middle school and is still going strong as a junior in high school. I have been training 2x per week with Amir since April 2025 and it has truly been transformative experience for me. My posture has greatly improved and all areas of my physical fitness, like core strength, balance and flexibility, has improved quite significantly. Amir works with many top UM athletes but he also knows how to work with common couch potatoes like me in their 50s! The gym is very exclusive so there are no more than few people at any given time so you always have access to equipment. Yes, its not for everyone in terms of affordability but if you see your physical fitness as long term investment, you should definitely give it a try with Amir and his wife Alexus. My wife also trains with Thrive/Alexus and she is also very excited with the results.

I cannot speak highly enough of Thrive! If you have ever thought of training and are on the fence or don’t know where to start, save yourself the time and wondering and walk through their door. I was hesitant at first with even trying to figure out where to start, and I’m so glad I found Thrive. From my first welcome and workout with Amir and Alexus, they have been so kind and informative. They both are lovely people and a great part of our community. Other trainers at Thrive are always welcoming too! You absolutely cannot go wrong working with the team at Thrive.

Personally, I train with Alexus and she has been fantastic. I constantly feel reassured and supported from my workouts to my everyday life. Discussing the harder health topics, food intake, activity levels, workouts, and life in general, are all easy to discuss. I’ve had issues over the years from many years of sports and every single thing is considered and respected. For example, I have ongoing back problems and that is always considered with my workouts. So if you have anything yourself that you might worry about, they will ensure they are mindful of your overall health and any prior injury that could come up during a workout.

The training facility is always clean and their two dogs, Bella and Flex, are as sweet as can be! If you’re lucky, you might just get to visit with them while you’re at Thrive!

I’ve been working with Alexus as my personal trainer for the past 9 months, and she is amazing! She takes the time to understand your goals and creates workouts to help you reach them effectively and safely.

I also appreciate her encouragement and consistency. She is always ready with a cue or modification if needed. And she will be sure to hold you accountable to those goals! Added bonus- so is so sweet, it’s like working out with a friend and the hour always flies by.

I also love that the gym is solely for personal training clients, so you’re not in some large public gym trying to workout around lots of other people. For someone not super comfortable in a typical open gym setting, this is the perfect space.

Amir helped me a ton, when I was going through severe hip pain that restricted my mobility and hindered my performance in the middle of my wrestling season. I got X-rays and was told that surgery was the main option to solving this problem or a PT regimen that was not guaranteed to solve my pain. I came in and he provided me with hip strengthening and mobility workouts for free. After a couple days I could see the reduced hip pain I was feeling and decided to go head first in training at his gym. I felt much more conditioned and stronger to help me perform at my highest level. They are tough and Amir is great at raising the bar for growth. I am extremely grateful for his time and energy that he put into me when I felt that my season was in jeopardy.

During my 40s, I did a lot of things, but I did not prioritize my physical fitness. Consequently, my strength, flexibility, stamina and overall health decreased, and my weight increased (from an average weight in 2015 of 157 lb to as high as 172 lb earlier this year). As I approached my 50th birthday, I felt overweight, inflexible, sluggish and achy in my body, and very uncomfortable with the trajectory of my weight. I decided that I wanted to change the course of my life and improve my health.

I had heard great things about Thrive Fitness, so I scheduled a free assessment at Thrive, which took place on March 19, 2024. Since then, I have been training with Alexus twice per week. Alexus designs challenging and strenuous workouts that push me hard but do not break me. She has been a very kind and patient teacher, paying close attention to my movements and nudging me towards better form, answering my questions, and always encouraging me with so much positivity. In conjunction with training at Thrive (and daily flexibility conditioning on my own, at home) Alexus has helped me reconfigure and dial in my diet by setting and tracking macro (protein, carbs, fat) targets using the My Macros+ mobile app.

Approaching three months into my training at Thrive with Alexus, I truly feel like I am living in a different body! My flexibility, strength and endurance have markedly improved, the body aches are gone (replaced sometimes by muscle soreness from working out – which is much more welcome!) and I have lost about 11 lb. I AM HOOKED, and I cannot recall any time in my life that I have felt better about my conditioning! I look forward to continuing my training and conditioning journey at Thrive and I recommend, most highly, Thrive (and Alexus) to anyone who is ready to put in the work and experience the improvements.

UPDATE: September 3, 2024
I've now been Thrive-ing for a little over 5 months and my weight loss and improvements to my strength and flexibility have continued. I have shed ~22 pounds, which is pretty shocking to me. I didn't know I was carrying that much extra weight! I included an image to show what 20 pounds looks like (a giant bag of birdseed) compared to me. I am so glad I am not carrying this as extra weight anymore!! If this 50 year old can Thrive, I bet you can too, if you try!

I started working with Amir after I suffered a neck injury in college wrestling. Before I went to Thrive, I placed 5th place at the NCAA tournament which fell short of my goal of becoming a National Champion. Due to my arm being very weak from the injured nerves in my neck, I could barely lift anything with my left arm. I then worked with Amir the whole year preparing for my senior year. I not only regained the strength in my neck and arm but was able to reach a new limits in my strength, conditioning, and flexibility that I didn’t think was possible. I went from barely being able to do 1 pull up to doing about 30 pull-ups. My senior year, I felt stronger and more conditioned than the rest of my opponents thanks to Amir and his lifting program. I went 33-0 and became a National Champion. I also won the Dan Hodge Trophy which is awarded to the most dominate college wrestler. I owe part of my success to Amir. I went to Alexus after having no success with various other training programs. After being on bed rest with two back to back pregnancies I had lost a lot of muscle, had diastasis and didn't know how to get my strength and confidence back. Alexus felt like my last stop before giving up, because I was ready to! It didn't take long for Alexus to give me a program that worked and I could feel was working. She is persistent, but kind - skilled, but gracious - and very determined to give you her 100% every time you walk in the door, even on those super early mornings at 5am. Truly the best place I’ve ever trained at. I was looking to get back into shape postpartum and I could not have chosen a better gym. There are so many different ranges of people and athletes who workout here and no matter where you are in your workout journey the environment makes you feel right at home!

I found Thrive when I was a grad student at UofM. I bought a Groupon and thought I would do a couple of sessions and then move on. 5 years later I am still training with Alexus. She literally has changed how I view my health and taking care of myself. She pushes me hard and is focused on helping me reach my goals. I started here 5 years ago with tricky and complex back issues due to severe scoliosis. Exceptional personal training and excellent environment. Josie is a great trainer, professional, patient, and knowledgeable. .She is very focused. She gives me different exercises every time and ensures I do every exercise correctly and with a good posture. It has been a significant transformation for me. From getting dizzy and nauseous after 15 mins the first few weeks, I can now finish my workout without any problem; I feel much healthier and stronger. I will have to say Alexus is an amazing trainer! I was nervous to start but I was so glad I did. She gave me so much confidence that I never had. She taught me so much about stretching, workouts and nutrition. She made it exciting with changing the workouts up so you are always doing something different. Working out might not seem like an investment, but in terms of my future health and mobility as I’m getting older it’s invaluable. 15 Years removed from high school sports, college and the cubicle life had taken its toll on my fitness. I'd become an avid runner, however wasn't consistently in the weight room for over a decade.

I have only been working with Amir for a few weeks now but he has already helped me make astonishing improvements in my mobility, which more importantly has helped to reduce my pain. I have been struggling with chronic and persistent lower back pain since 2015. The pain has at times become so intense that I was bed-ridden for months. I’ve know Amir for a number of years but it wasn’t until I was at the heaviest weight of my life that I decided I need help getting back on track. It was my first experience using a trainer and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Amir started by asking what my goals are and setting calorie limits for me. When I would try to start working out on my own I would often injure myself, I would try to work out as if I was still 25 years old and in shape. Amir showed me I had to walk before I ran, literally. He set weekly walking goals for me. The boot camp sessions are purely the best. It's not for you to relax, but to challenge yourself and make you feel soooo great AFTER it -- not during it. Amir, the manager, really takes care of clients.

I also had personal training sessions with Matt, who was a great athlete ever since he was a kid, and moved forward in professional sports training and management track. Matt really really cares about my personal growth and, most importantly, safety in training. He trains to the maximal level that is safe for me. The assisted stretch at the end of each personal training is a lot more effective than stretching on my own. Matt communicates with his clients, and really listens. The personal training sessions sound like a lot of money, but it's the best money I have spent, ever. Within 6 months regular training, I got a lot stronger in terms of forms. After a year I went from not being able to walk upstairs without panting to running my first half marathon.

Amir and Matt both have a tremendous professional knowledge about training. They know the theories to backup each circuit, and they also have the experience to work with different kinds of people. The other trainers I've worked with in the gym are also great. If I could give them 10 stars, I totally would!

I found Thrive Martial Arts and Fitness on Groupon back in October. I called Thrive before even purchasing the Groupon to see if I could try out the gym and Amir encouraged me to do a free trial bootcamp. After doing one bootcamp I was completely hooked! The bootcamps are fantastic workouts and Amir and Matt and the other instructors are great at making things harder or easier as needed. My cardiovascular endurance is great, and I never do any cardio besides three 1 hr bootcamps. I also look more toned than I ever have and am nearly down to my high school weight. I have also learned a lot about various stretches and exercises I can do to help correct some pre-existing muscle imbalances I have from sitting a lot during the day.
