According to my handy Discover Strength app, I just wrapped up my 775th visit. I can enthusiastically say that after eight years there is no way I would be where I'm at without the Discover Strength team. It doesn't matter how unmotivated I am or what else is happening in my world - I give them everything I have for thirty minutes and they push me harder than I could ever push myself. A special shout out to Kayla - I was curious how things would go after choosing a random trainer based on my availability and she didn't miss a beat. Two minutes into the workout and it felt like we had been training together for years.

Why 5 stars?
1. The result: Aerobically, I have long been very active. In May of 2016, concerned about muscle loss associated with getting older (alas), I gave Discover Strength a try. My goals: minimize muscle loss and decrease the proportion of total weight comprised by fat (vs muscle). Since beginning, my strength has increased on each measured muscle group by 13-43% β¦ noticeable amounts. And, my body fat percentage which was just over 20% is down 8 percentage points. It works.
2. The methodology: focus (time and attention), intensity, technique, isolation, & variation.
3. The trainers: each is attentive to my readiness for each session, both mental and physical ... it seems they are rather good at reading me; and each then adjusts their approach in subtle ways to nudge the most out of me ... clearly more than I'd do on my own. After nearly 8 years, I've had the opportunity to work with many DS trainers. To a person, they are outstanding.
There are perhaps less expensive choices; however, it would be inaccurate to consider them true alternatives or substitutes.

"____ is not just a business, it's a lifestyle." You've probably heard that phrase from a friend/colleague/skydiving partner recently while sipping your gravity dripped Malaysian coffee and eating avocado toast. It seems to be standard preface to some sort of MLM scheme or a young startup concocted by a couple of dudebros with some extra trust fund money. So in light of that, let me say this: Discover Strength is a business. No, it may not get you more Instagram likes (although your sweet bod might). No, it's not here to take over your life, wallet, and Friday night conversation. It's not for everyone; it really is what you make of it. However, if you put in time to work with the knowledgeable and customer oriented staff and customize with them a plan that is manageable for your schedule, the whole training regime will definitely let you see results. If I was asked what was the number one thing that keeps me coming back, it has to be the trainers and concierge; they are all very skilled, very qualified as trainers, and inherently customer-focused.

During my several years at Discover Strength I have improved muscle strength and tone. I was advised by my doctor to take a medication to prevent bone loss, but I opted for exercise instead. I do know that the medication would have compromised my health in years to come. The exercises have helped me maintain flexibility and balance and have helped me to be stronger as I age. I have been training at Discover Strength (Plymouth) for about a month and a half now and I love it! I come from a background of strength training regularly 5-6 days a week at the gym and with trainers. When I first started DS, it was hard to wrap my head around the concept of only working out 2 times a week and for only 30 minutes. I have to admit, I was skeptical.
Prior to beginning at DS, I had a Bod Pod in order to see what my starting point was. I began training shortly thereafter and after 3 weeks of training (6 workouts), I committed to the 4 week Body Comp Challenge,which I am still currently participating in. Before starting the challenge, I had to have another Bod Pod in order to accurately track my challenge results. I did the Bod Pod an to my surprise, I already had significant improvements in only 3 weeks, I lost 8 lbs of fat, put on 4 lbs of muscle and dropped 4% body fat! The results speak for themselves, yes, I was mindful of what I was eating those 3 weeks, but I did not deprive myself of calories, the occasional drink or even a treat(s).To say I am pleased is an understatement, I'm excited to continue training at DS and to see the changes in my overall body composition as well as my strength gains!
TRAINING
I thought in all my years of training that I knew what muscle failure was.... and yes, to a point I did, I just never knew how far I could be pushed after that point of perceived muscle failure. At DS, you will be pushed to absolute muscle failure in only 1 set of a specific exercise. Each week, I feel stronger and I have either increased my weight and/or my reps, it's a really good feeling to feel your progress before you "see" your progress.

The staff are all amazing, everyone is very friendly,professional and knowledgeable. I have never once felt uncomfortable or intimidated, I look forward to each and every workout.

They are also good about adjusting the intensity of the workout down for me when I feel like it's getting to be a little too much. These guys are great! What a fantastic place to workout and become educated at the same time. I discovered that I had been lifting weights inefficiently and basically all wrong - it only takes two, 30 minute workouts a week to build muscle, gain strength and lose fat. These guys will show you how to do it the right way. All the trainers I have worked with have been outstanding and motivating. It is clear that they care deeply about their jobs. I cannot say enough great things about this place. If you want to build muscle, lose fat or gain strength or all three, this is the place.

Professional, efficient and adaptive workouts. Trainers do individual and group sessions (cost varies). I do all group sessions and they last no more than 45 mins. I feel like I get a very tailored workout. More effective and less expensive in my experience than similar sessions at a large club gym where I previously held a membership.
They place a heavy emphasis on ensuring that you are doing all exercises safely (correct settings for height, etc) and in line with what research has shown to produce an effective workout.
In addition to trainer sessions, they offer services like bod pod/body composition, concussion prevention and goal-specific training (ex marathon/runner).
