I tried to cancel my membership multiple times but could never get ahold of the correct people. No one would call or email me back. I had moved and hadn't been to the gym in months and gave the proper notice however they kept charging my card. I wrote a negative review online and within minutes a manager called me and said the only way they would let me out of my contract is if I changed my review from one stars to five. So I did and they canceled my membership, the same thing had happened to my roommate. I changed my review to this "The gym is very well maintained and I loved not having to wait to use equipment. There is plenty of room to do walking lunges which is hard to come by. The only downfall is that there is only one free weight squat rack. Overall I had a great experience with Golds Gym in Westport" which ended up being a total lie. This gym was ridiculous and poorly ran. I am happy that they closed.

Double charged on annual fees. Shady explanation on why they can't provide a refund for thier error...had to get my bank involved to recover it. Not cool. This was an ok place to work out, but it was definitely not an elite gym...not even close. In any case it's a moot point now since they are out of business as of Dec 31, 2017.

I signed up for a 16 week fitness challenge through Gold's Gym in partnership with a promotional company. Our experience with the gym was unsatisfying. The monthly rate is not worth the facility or the lack of good customer service. It was difficult to schedule a trainer and every time I met with one it felt rushed, as though I was an inconvenience to them. The facility is run down and any broken equipment sits unusable for long periods of time. My program ended in October. Based on the contract I signed, I completed all the requirements necessary to cancel my membership. It took me two months and a ton of phone calls, emails, and paperwork to be able to cancel. Part of the agreement of cancelling was to send in our check-in logs to the promotional company. The owner, Phil, would not release these logs to us, which almost cost me the ability to cancel. After I began having trouble with the cancellation, I was never able to speak to Phil directly about my issues. Time and again the Gold's Gym staff members I spoke to said that they were working on contacting the promotional company and blamed the issues on them and their billing company. However, I was finally able to contact the promotional company who answered all my questions and resolved my issues within a couple of hours. I would not recommend this gym to anyone.

The owner sent me to collections for hundreds of dollars months after I had told him I was no longer renewing my contract. He continues to belittle me and argue with me even though I was a member for years and always paid upfront and in full for my entire contract.
I was told I never did quit and that I owed them 97 dollars. That number has now skyrocketed to $214.94

This place doesn't even deserve 1 star I am forced to give it.
My experience started out great, but quickly cratered.
One of the two watering fountains was broken for over 14 months. 2/5 shower heads work, there is only 1/4 shower pegs. There are never any towels that I've seen, and I've been in the gym early at 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The bathrooms are disgusting and I doubt cleaned regularly. When equipment broke, it would remain broken for weeks, months, even longer.
I signed up for personal trainer sessions early in my contact before I knew the true business practices of this gym. My first trainer was fired, the second left, and I was on my third in less than a year.
Additionally, I was billed twice in one month for the personal trainer sessions and never reimbursed. I am still trying to get refunded the extra funds, but the owner or manager is never in. He also could never find the contract I signed for the personal trainer sessions when I asked to view it.
The gym was sold without telling anyone, and half the equipment was gone the next day. So now it's a half-stocked gym, yet they keep trying to bill full-price for a half-filled gym.
Every time I go in, the people I need to talk to are never there. I will NEVER join another Gold's Gym.
To anyone out there. STAY AWAY! This gym is a scam.

The owner is selling the gym. He knowingly charged for memberships despite equipment being sold off and dragged out of the building and never notified members. A low and deceitful action.

This place is an absolute disgrace to the Gold's Gym brand. All the equipment is outdated and cheap. Half of the barbells are bent. The place always has a disgusting odor, especially in the bathrooms. Don't even get me started on how gross and unacceptable the bathrooms are..
Now they are slowly selling equipment and closing the gym without telling a single member. I signed up a few months back and they promised a remodel coming soon... LIES!

For just working out, this gym is fine. However, the men do NOT have a sauna, even thought it's advertised. I was told 3 years ago it would be fixed, and now I am told it never will.
Other than that, the equipment is okay. I think the value for what you get is decent. I enjoy the current staff, too.

I took the 16 week challenge. I was excited to have accountability and belong to a gym that professed to care about keeping their members on track. I did not once hear from my coach during the 16 week challenge. Additionally, the facility equipment was out of date and dirty in general. The bathroom/changing area was cramped and dirty as well. It was hard to get a hold of anyone in charge at the gym when I called them and they did not call back as promised when they said they would search for an answer and get back to me. Lastly, I was also told one thing by the gym and another by the company that takes care of their billing in terms of cancelling my membership due to military service. If you're looking for a gym I recommend OneLife Fitness.

The workers and guests are nice but there just isn't much going on with the gym itself. There are weight rooms with mirrors, and locker rooms with showers, and that's about it.

I signed up for a membership in July of 2016 and paid for one year the day I signed up because I only planned on using the gym for one year. This year in August, I noticed that my card starting being charged without authorization for another year. I have been trying to cancel my membership since the beginning of August and each time I call I either get no answer or get told that the supervisor is busy (4 times now to be exact that the supervisor has been too busy to take my call). I have never been called back to discuss my membership. I have also emailed and haven't heard back after over 2 weeks.

Been going to this gym for a couple of years now. Here are the positives:
The equipment is there to do just about any exercise you might want to do, the bathrooms are kept clean, and the staff is pretty friendly.
That said, for as expensive as it is, they've had an arm missing from one of the pec fly machines for as long as I've been a member, one of the water fountains has been broken for months, they didn't get a second squat rack until very recently, and only having 2 squat racks is pretty weak as it is. Sometimes you've gotta go hunting for weight clips because they don't have enough for all of the bars, and a few of their dumbbells need to be replaced.
It isn't a terrible gym, but there's no reason it should be $49.99 a month. It's probably worth half that.

Gold's is a casual place to work out. There is not an issue of overcrowding and I can always find a place to do my desired activity. The only issue I would find at times was necessity for some equipment to be updated. There was always at least one treadmill out of commission when I was there.

This establishment is very unprofessional and attempts to con you into memberships and won't honor their own contracts. The gym quality is poor, the equipment is limited & it smells as if its not cleaned well. I am displeased with my experience, so certainly take this with a grain of salt. You can much better with your in my opinion.

It's a basic bare bones gym with mediocre customer service & minimal classes. The program they offered is a scam, the scanner never works to scan your card, the hours are not great on the weekends, and Phil the owner is a con artist who scams people who use the fit smart program

It's not as big as some other area gyms, but offers a variety of cardio equipment, a large aerobics studio, and exercise equipment for your chest, back, legs, glutes, shoulders, and arms, as well as a variety of free weights and benches. The gym is clean; the equipment is well maintained; and the opening hours are convenient. It's an ideal place to get in and stay in shape.

I had a 4 month contract with this Gold's Gym and for the most part it was a positive experience. The owner, Phil, genuinely cares about his members' satisfaction and is a present, obliging host. The facilities can get very busy, but I think the longest I had to wait for a machine was 10 minutes. Luckily, the gym is open in "off" hours and you can find a quiet, empty time if that's a priority for you. The machines can sometimes be sweat-drenched, but that's more the fault of rude members than staff. Spray bottles/paper towels are always available, but there is no signage asking for members to respect the facilities and other patrons and to clean up after yourself. (Gross. Bummer.) The staff cleans all the machines at least once a day. Similarly, it gets very hot and VERY stinky in the gym when it's busy. Machines-- mostly work well. Other amenities, like the sauna + drinking fountain, were closed the entire time I was a member and there seemed to be no plan on fixing it. The sauna (steam room?) was being used for storage. They also offered a variety of classes that were free with membership. Overall, great value. I joined for the added benefit of going through a program with a trainer. That really fell apart, and within 6 weeks of going to the gym I was working out on my own out of a contractual obligation. The trainer "sessions" were a joke. Pointing to a machine and listing which ones I should use, not going through a workout.
I wouldn't recommend signing up for the 16-week fit challenges that are hosted at this gym but not actually managed by the staff-- the paperwork and stipulations feel more like entrapment to make you pay for a year-long membership instead of just the 4 months you want.
I won't be continuing my membership, because 1- I have an old gym in my basement that's more convenient and free... I joined for the program that ended up being a pain in the butt to complete. 2-- it's not worth it to have to clean up after disgusting sweaty men and smelling their stink while working out.

I just completed my 16 week challenge and my overall experience with Gold's Gym in Westport was great. (After reading these reviews I hope I have no issue with cancellation!! π€ Would love to continue there, however on the weekends it's an hour commute to workout. π). My trainer Mallory was awesome and always kept me motivated and upping the workouts. Usually no wait to very little wait to use machines and weights. When I had to interact with front desk staff, I never experienced anyone being rude. Keypad for entry after hours. If you had questions about machines, other people were willing to show you how to use them. About 90% of the time towels were available at the front counter.
On the website it states tanning and sauna rooms are available. However, when I inquired about those services I was told they did not have those at this location. Website needs to be updated to reflect these amenities.
There are a few things that could be improved at the Westport location. Only one working water fountain. The 2nd one was broken the entire 16 weeks I was there. When I first started there were 3 treadmills not working, however after 2 months new ones were brought in. One bike was not working my entire 16 weeks. On Sundays if you worked out later in the day, there was a good chance there would be no paper towels to wipe down the equipment. My biggest irk was the air vents in the women locker room were never cleaned. The build up of dust on them was inches thick. I knew when I walked in to change each time a sneezing session would follow. It made me wonder if /how often the bathrooms are cleaned.

The gym is okay at best. It definitely has an old school feel to it. My issue with them is with the cancellation process. I have been a member for over a year so when i went into the gym to cancel my member, I didn't think there would be too many issues. However, i got the runaround right away. I spoke with Tyler Nash, who told me that I needed to send an email to cancel. I wrote the email in front of him and sent it. I never heard anything back and then sent another follow up email. Still no response. I then got an email asking for a review so here it is. Where's my cancellation confirmation????

Like several of the other reviewers, I too wish I could give this place negative stars. As a fellow local business owner, I completely understand that this location is a franchise; however, they are representing Gold's Gym in the worst possible way. I was so excited to try this gym out but upon entering, I was immediately greeted with the absolute worst front desk man. This man was sitting in his room and made me feel like I was annoying him because he had to get out of his chair.
He did not show me around the gym. He did not talk to me about memberships. All I was told was that it was $20 for the day. Why would I pay and sign up for a membership before actually experiencing the gym? I walked myself around the gym, the equipment is VERY old, everything is almost broken, and the bathroom smelled horrendous. Awful equipment and worse customer service makes this the worst Gold's Gym in the country. Rest assured, I have also contacted corporate Gold's Gym to recommend they revoke this franchise's membership.
I cannot believe people actually pay to go here.
**RESPONSE TO BUSINESS**
You won't have a record because you did not ask for my name or any other contact information; this is further evidence of how this gym is poorly managed. The impression the guy I spoke to gave is that he was the manager, so it's highly likely no amount of training will help this gym's staff.

This particular gold's gym is the worst gold's gym I have ever been too. In the reviews below the owner talks about team members. You can not be a team member if you are the only one working in the gym. I only took 2 photos to illustrate how bad This gym Really is. I didn't want it to be obvious that I was taking photos of the extension cords laying all-over the floor and broken equipment and other laundry hampers that were filled with dirty towels around the gym. There were no clean towels to be had. Because there is only one person working. He is unable to clean towels work the front desk give tours all the same time P is the only person working. 3 out of the 5 shower handles that operate the water are broken-off the wall. I'm sure that all 3 handles did not break-off at the same time. Maintenance is not being done. So that leaves 2 working showers but unfortunately there is only one place to hang your towel in the shower so if 2 people were to use the shower only 1 person could bring your towel their. Again maintenance is not being done regardless of what the owner would say. It is obvious! I am sorry for the bad review but the photos and lack of maintenance speaks for themselves. I also neglected to mention a lot of outdated equipment and lack of cleanliness.

My wife called the day before (Westport location, not corporate) asking if they had a trial period at all as I am a relocated employee, the lady on the phone told her yes. We showed up today and asked again about it to the guy working and he just stated, $20 a day. We asked about the 2 week trial we were told about just yesterday. Then he went on about some rec center (I'm guessing UMKC's? I guess he thought we were students?) and how he won't honor the "corporate" trial period - even though we literally called yesterday and they told us they would. He was "kind" enough to let us try out the gym today, but frankly his awful attitude has turned me off from this gym so much we will definitely be going elsewhere.

Toya Scott is not incorrect. I had the same exact issue. In FACT the employee who signed with me made a verbal agreement that I would be able to leave my membership earlier than the full year because i had known i would be moving. Later to find out that they had been charging me for the full year AND BEYOND that (over $600!! that i never got back), even though I sent multiple emails concerning my membership cancellation with all the documentation they requested. Because they never responded to me via email i have no proof for my case. This morally bankrupt branch will steal as much money as they can from you if you ever try to leave. The manager Phil will hang up on you and evade you over and over again. And if he is ever talking to you on the phone you'll have the pleasure of trying to interpret whatever he is saying while he is chewing on a big wad of tobacco. I REPEAT, never sign with this gym unless you intent on donating to their cause.
If Gold's Gym Corporate has any sense of moral obligation they will refund me and all the other people who left the same review, and who were scammed into paying more than what than what they got in return.

I've been a member for almost 2 years and I love it. I like to get in and out because of my busy life and they have lots of equipment so I don't usually wait to use anything. I like to lift free weights and use cable machines and they have plenty. They just renovated the place and there is lots of room to do walking lunges, abs, and anything else you need open space for. Phil and the staff has always been friendly to me and they always greet me by first name (which also holds me a bit accountable when I skip a few work outs). They are laid back and everyone who works out there seems to respect the equipment and clears the bars when they are finished. I would recommend this gym to anyone who is looking for a gym in the area for lifting weights and using machines/cables , although they do have ellipticals, treadmills, and stair masters as well

The atmosphere is great - it's a combination of old and new, so I feel like I'm stepping back into Arnold's old videos from Venice Beach.
An added benefit is that it's never crowded, so grabbing your favorite piece of equipment is not impossible - even on national Chest Day.

Malicious scheme to prevent you from ending your membership.
The machines are not very well kept and the gym overall could be a little bit cleaner. The location is nice and I had no major complaints until I moved to a different area of the city and decided to end my membership. They will just fool you into not achieving it.
I went there in person to end the membership. The person said I have to send an email to some address. So I did it. Then I was told I have to give a 60 days notice to end my membership. Shady scam to squeezing THREE MORE monthly payments from you. THREE MORE! I'm still trying to figure out why I'm being charged for three full months AFTER my 60 days notice.

When I lived in Westport, this gym was within walking distance to my house, and only $30 a month, so I signed a two year "contract". Rookie mistake.
It's pretty clean, except for the bathrooms. For two years there was always an issue; no soap, no toilet tissue, no clean towels, this happened all the time when the contract specifically stated towels provided, the shower was FILTHY, never cleaned, it was also always out of soap.
The staff was always friendly, just not into cleaning I guess.
At the end of two years my contract never ended, whatever they make you sign traps you in the contract FOREVER, not two years.
Online it says you have to make a request at the gym to get out of a contract, when you ask at the office, they tell you the only way to get out is by making a request online.
When I sent one email to the general manager, I never received a response. When I sent countless emails, I was finally released from the contract.
Don't be a sucker. Don't just sign a contract at the first gym you find. This gym sucks!

Gym doors are always locked, even during posted "staffed hours." Phones are never answered.
Bathroom is filthy and way too small, clearly never gets cleaned.
Not only held me to my contract despite moving, but tried to tack on additional charges while also hiking up my rate for the final months.
I've had memberships at 2 other golds in the area, by comparison this place even being under the same name should be considered fraud.

Owner/manager Phil Daniels really CARES about the gym and his clients... great equipment, great space, great atmosphere. Clean, well-lit, great upbeat music playing. And the cardio room is awesome, along with the yoga/floor workout room in the back. Huge and beautiful!

The place is run down and members are bailing. Not clean and very poor management. Equipment is old and falling apart. Try and cancel and management gives you the run around

I moved to Kansas City about about 8 months ago and back home I had a gym membership with Gold's. The Gold's there was a corporate gym, while this one was not. I had to technically cancel my membership from home and get a new one from the one here. I was paying $30 to my gym back home, and Phil was really nice to make sure he kept the price the same for me. Honestly, at first I wasn't really comfortable with the gym due to it's size, but the trainers and manager were nothing but nice to me. The weight room has everything I need for my workouts and I've also done some workouts in the big room they also have available. All the equipment is there and ready to use, staff is super friendly, times are really good, and also the parking garage helps a lot especially because the gym is in Westport and it's always hard to find parking!
You will not be disappointed!

If you hate liars, don't think about going to this gym and give them your personal information and your bank account number, because they will cheat you as they did with me. Never join this gym, you can find hundreds of other gyms that don't steal your money. I cancelled my contact and paid 2 months extra as well as whats left for my personal trainer because i was moving out, but the following month, they charged me around $200. Worst gym experience i ever had.

My trainer cancelled on me, and never rescheduled. After three separate times of the gym failing to return my messages for a reschedule, I finally got a hold of someone and set up a new appointment. Then that appointment was cancelled without notifying me. I didn't find out until I got to the gym, and nobody could find the trainer. Then when I called to cancel my membership, I was told they couldn't do that over the phone, and I would have to email them. All in all, a massive waste of my time and money.
They also lied to me about the terms of my membership, so I'm stuck paying still even months after cancelling my membership. They've also tried offering financial incentives to delete this review, so they are basically trying to BUY positive reviews.

Not of fan of this gym. Made the first payment and they charged me the wrong ammount... The gym is old and the bathrooms/locker rooms aren't very clean. When I said they wanted to cancel they gave me the run around I said I wanted to cancel in november and today is Feb 27th 2015 and I am still making payments. If I were you guys and want a cleaner gym and great customer service go to anywhere but Golds gym or just spend a few bucks moe and go to 24 hour fitness

This gym has some of the worst management I've ever seen in a business. Originally when I joined I was told I could go to any of the Gold's Gyms in the KC area. When I went to the Gold's Gym up north I was told that Westport's Gold Gym doesn't cooperate with the others so I actually could only go to the one in Westport. When I tried to talk to the manager/owner at Westport, he dodged my calls for 2 months!! Their management makes it almost impossible to cancel your membership and they will charge you random fees throughout the year.
Please, I highly recommend you look for another gym in the Westport area. Don't give these fools your money.

Prior to coming to golds, I had tried out many gyms before and have had little to no luck. I walked into the westport location one day after work, spoke with the staff and immediately signed up. This decision has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
The staff is very friendly and honest with you. They have always made time to answer my questions no matter how silly and are always willing to give me advice and help develop training plans. I have never been to a gym where the staff has been so helpful.
The other members are really nice and the equipment suits my needs. Yes the location gets crowded around 5-6 but every other gym does to. Even during peak times you are able to get onto a machine with little to no wait at all.
I have never had a problem with being over charged, not being able to speak to someone, broken machines, or anything that would hinder my ability to get the best workout in that I can. This gym is a great place and I love being there!

Disclaimer: I waited a couple months after my 1 year membership ended to write this review, because several other internet reviews assured me I would be charged a 'mountain of fees' well after my membership is over. I will edit my review if that ever happens, but as of now that isn't the case.
That being said, I don't have a bad thing to say about the gym itself. It had all the equipment I needed to do my workouts. I'm a guy who is fine keeping to myself during my workout, and this gym was perfect for that. A basketball court would have been nice, but what are you going to do in the middle of Westport?
The monthly fees were a little higher than I was used to, but were probably justified due to the gas I saved jogging to Gold's instead of driving to one further away. I didn't do too much research. I just wanted to get a membership somewhere so I could start working out again, so I didn't look at places like TheGymKC, or 24 Hour.
My roommate and I first went in for a free workout when we moved to Westport. I signed a contract (this was before I read any of the the reviews that had me freaking out about what I just got myself into), and my roommate didn't. They were a little pushy with my roommate, I think he received about four calls over the next couple of months seeing if he would change his mind.
I decided not to renew my contract because of just that.. it was a contract. I wanted to go to a gym without one. I was expecting the worst but thanks to these reviews, I knew exactly what I had to do (make sure you request to cancel at least 60 days ahead of time). As long as you jump through some hoops, ending the contract is not AS BAD as these reviews make it sound. (Still, I don't think any gym contract should be this much of a hassle to get out of.). The new front desk guy was nice about it and didn't give me any grief whatsoever.
Hint: READ YOUR CONTRACT. Take it home with you if you have to. Read all of the fine print. Try not to sign a contract if at all possible. But if you do, make sure that when you cancel your contract, your personal information from your original contract matches the information put on your membership termination form. The worker who originally singed me up, messed up my name, number, and address (all of which needed to be accurate to fulfill the membership termination). Although it could have been three simple mistakes, I chalk it up to good ol' dumbassness.
All in all, if you can put up with the loops you have to jump through to cancel your membership, I would recommend this gym, because it is a pretty good city gym at a fair price. If not, you should take your money somewhere else. You may ask.. if I could go back, would I still do a year with Golds Gym? I'd say I would, since I know ending my membership wouldn't be a hassle in the end.
If you read this short novel, I hope I gave you some good information that will save you a headache or two down the road.

The gym itself is okay (but nothing special). What I don't like is that after my husband and I moved to a different area of KC, they continued to bill me as if I were still a member, even though I gave them written cancellation. It's been almost a year now since I've cancelled, and I'm still getting erroneous invoices in the mail, and keep talking to corporate about it - because I'm not giving them one more dime! Their business practices are rather shady... I much prefer my new gym, the YMCA!
