They made it so difficult to cancel even though I was beyond a year. Then fast forward this weekend I was invited by Jay to a "party" with a food truck and some sweet come back as a member deal. I got to the club no food truck the person wasn't there the lady had no idea what I was talking about she got Que, I think is how you spell it, anyway he had the worst I dont want to be here attitude simply told me it was suppose to be his day off he didn't want to be here but was forced to by his manager didnt know what the "special" was and that the food truck and vendors thing fell through. This wasn't the first time the club hyped some event for it to not happen the respectful thing would of been to text customers that it was canceled so they dont waste their time or at the very least COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR STAFF what the "special" is. I'm not going to pay $110 a month for my husband and I to go to a gym that does this maybe if they would treat their customers better people would go here and they could lower their prices what a joke. 10/10 would not recommend I'm just going to pay for a field house pass for the pool in blue springs and workout at home for free.

I was a member for the last year. Love the pool. Life changed and I was unable to continue. Contacted them in first part of August and informed them and they informed me I had a contract until October 15th. Was not able to use the gym for the last 3 months. Went back on October 16th to cancel. They informed me because I didn't come in on October 1st to cancel that they will have to charge me for the full month of November. I contacted my bank and paided them more that what I would of been charged for the month of November. Money well spent. Their response was to continue to call my phone. I personally would never join Genesis again, out of principle alone.

This gym is always dirty and weights are never re-racked and items aren’t placed back where they belong. Despite being told before by management that they themselves personally walk around and re-rack.
I arrived ten minutes after open (it’s not a 24/7 gym) and weights were left in the same place as the day prior, dirty bottles/trash/towels left at the cable machines. Racks missing bars and weights. Same old same old. I pay $120 a month so that I can walk around and find equipment as a warmup. Do better.

I do not recommend membership here. They advertise low costs then raise the prices, charge “enhancement” fees. The staff members are not friendly, especially when trying to cancel a membership. Water issues, toilets not flushing properly and the locker rooms have no air flow. I used the pool once and there was hair floating all over.

It is impossible to cancel your membership. First of all, you can’t cancel online or over the phone; you have to come into the gym in person, which is already inconvenient. Second, you can only come during the manager's working hours, which are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Really? So, please explain, dear owner, how someone with a job from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and only a 30-minute lunch break is supposed to accomplish this? Do you expect all of us with jobs during those hours to take PTO just to cancel our gym membership?

After three months coming here; its always very clean, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, equipment always works. If something breaks, it is addressed quickly. The range of equipment offered has something for everyone, from the serious weight lifter to older folks like me who are just trying to stay fit and healthy. Most equipment has multiples so a workout doesn't have to wait on equipment.
The whirlpool is very nice and both the dry sauna and the steam room are excellent.
I'm not a person who takes classes, but these are always well attended when I am there, and seem to be very popular.
The only issue I have is it's not closer to my house, and I'm too old to move. I highly recommend this gym.

When I first got my membership, they were open 24 hours. The only reason I purchased the membership. I also was sold the membership at a certain price but then was told if I wanted to workout at my location I would have to pay an additional $15 on top of the $75 I was already paying them. I really do love this gym and I am disappointed in the way the staff handled things when I no longer wanted to continue memebership. I was threated and harrassed and that is just not a goood feeling for anyone. I hope they replaced the people who acted that way.

Pros: Great space and equipment. Locker room is high end. Easy-to-set locker combinations for day use means you don't have to remember to bring your own lock. Lockers are big too if heading to or from work.

Cons: Part of the weight area is freezing cold with a ceiling vent and fan aligned. The rest? You will be sweating incessantly (not necessarily bad) as it is warmer than almost every gym I have visited.

Update: A couple of years ago, the gym was renovated and is now two floors. Cardio is on the second floor and everything else is on the main floor. Since covid, they are not completely 24/7. They have the same hours as Planet Fitness in Independence off of Noland Road. 24 hours Sunday thru Thursday and close at 9pm on both Friday and Saturday. I've been a member since December, 2005!

Tried to cancel membership in February was told I needed to come in to cancel even though I stated I was out of town. I understand certain policies so, I came in person in March to cancel. My husband and I have been members of Genesis Health Clubs since before the remodel, and honestly, it has gone downhill. We kept our grandfathered membership rate (thankfully), but otherwise, the experience has gotten worse and worse.

First, it’s always extremely busy — even at 5 AM when we usually go. It’s hard to find machines or space, no matter what time of day. I have been reluctant to even go due to all of these issues.

The staff has also become increasingly unprofessional. We used to do business with Steve which since has passed away. Staff now are nowhere to be found, eating at the front desk, unapproachable, and never can answer my questions. When I recently canceled my membership, an employee quite literally spent 30 minutes talking to me with his hand acting as a "llama puppet" (calling it "Mama Llama" and "Baby Llama"), making throw-up noises and saying the llama was “blessing” me. I just stood there awkwardly waiting for him to sign the cancellation paper. It was incredibly uncomfortable and unprofessional. My husband and I have both spoke with him before and he is very nice but with no offense intended does not seem to understand social cues and this time it was was too much.

Beyond that, their billing and IT systems are a mess. I’ve consistently had problems with my online account, and no one at the club seems to know how to help. Fees and prices feel completely random, often calculated manually on an iPhone calculator, and they’re very secretive about pricing and contract details.

Personal training is another disaster. Scheduling a time with a trainer was hit or miss. I scheduled a time for 5 am one day and I showed up and the trainer never got the memo and didn't show up. Then they were looking for someone that could come help me.. I ended up leaving and didn't reschedule with them for a while. They advertise a "free personal training session," but it’s just someone measuring your body fat %, asking about your goals, and then spending the rest of the time trying to sell you extremely expensive training packages — no workout included. Last I checked, personal training was $75 for a one-hour session, on top of your monthly membership fee (currently about $120–$130 a month for new members). I did end up finally getting a personal phone number to text one of their trainers to try and get on the schedule and completed 2 personal training sessions which I did not get a whole lot out of although the trainer was Kerry and she was knowledgeable and was very kind. Probably one of the only normal employee interactions I have had. She seemed to not really enjoy her position at Genesis, and mentioned she has more of a passion for bouldering and climbing.

As a side note, my husband and I are in our mid-twenties (23–25 years old), and we’ve found it hard to connect with anyone at this gym. The majority of members seem to be in their 30s–50s. While there are a few nice people, a lot of members come off very standoffish and unapproachable, which makes the atmosphere less welcoming.

The only real pros are that the machines are clean and usually working, and the locker rooms are nice. That’s about it.

I have since canceled my membership and will not be back.

Bottom line: overcrowded, disorganized, overpriced, and unprofessional. Would not recommend especially at the current price.

So I’m at the gym with coed dry sauna …….two young males just went at it. Staff looked at me like I was an alien when I said something . The two guys walked out friends so staff just said “ their friends now so whatever “. The female that I was teaching the aquatics class that I asked to get someone said , with an irritated face, “I thought it was a medical emergency “ and went back to teaching her class with out looking. The take away- next time I will make sure I’m safe and walk away. Maybe it will turn into a medical emergency, maybe it won’t. Not my issue.

I try to go real early in the morning before the group classes or after the classes when it is less busy and easier to use whatever machines I want to.

I originally started going to Genesis to use the pool but the water is way too cold. If I remember right I think the website says it's supposed to be 85° which is wrong. They keep the pool a lot colder in the 70s. I used to do aquatic physical therapy in 95° water and was hoping to continue doing the exercises at Genesis but I physically can't handle being in the freezing cold water.

Austin and Elizabeth were amazing. My son and I are from Denver. We came into town from the Adidas Nationals Wrestling tournament. We are looking for a place for my son to check weight and possibly get in sauna, steam room in preparation for weight in's that evening. As a new SS member I was elated at the onset with Mara as the intake personnel. Although the initial visit for registration felt rushed, I was confident with the selection of up to date equipment, the non-offensive smells, the locker room cleanliness (except the women's disabled stall; a mess including the flushing of the toilet), the Fitness Management, the smiles that greeted me and the overall positive trajectory of how I would be successful at this gym was a plus...until the pre-scheduled "Fitness Management consult" that seems required for membership and I was elated to complete.
Let's go, yes? Nope. Joel was not in attendance nor was any viable acknowledgement made for my 2pm confirmed appointment which was beyond disappointing. Sitting and waiting for 12 minutes for someone who didn't value my membership nor my needs as a newly registered person with needs was hurtful. So with this in mind, I'll not choose this facility. I am about customer CARE particularly with a first impression and am unwilling to compromise in this area. The YMCA does better. Going forward I will watch how I'm treated at all Genesis Health Club locations and will promptly report to my Insurance Company any slights or infractions. Thank you.

If you are looking for a trainer I highly recommend Kody! It’s been years since I was in a gym and he has made me feel comfortable and confident in my training.
After my training sessions, he will do recovery sessions which is a game changer! I have issues with my lower back and hips and I was worried when we started training they would get worse. That’s not the case at all!

Today two cleaning women entered the dressing room of the men , I think it is somewhat inappropriate since men usually walk naked there or change freely before they went men to clean , I think those in charge of the place should talk to these people to avoid possible problems . I love the group fitness classes, but it’s way too expensive to have so many things broken, dirty, and out of order. Several ellipticals, treadmills, and Stair Masters are out of order, and the ones that work are filthy. The bathrooms are disgusting, the showers are nasty, and there are never any paper towels. The Independence location is close to home but needs much improvement to justify the monthly charge. I give it two stars because I like the classes and instructors, but this facility needs improvement.

Love this gym! love the fact that they’re open 24hrs almost every day, and my son loves the child care they have. Ana Mara is so nice and helped us on the sign in process, she was really helpful and so friendly and still is every time I see her. Went here today with my friend to sign up for the year-end membership deal for $69.99. Brandon was super friendly and knowledgeable with helping us on any questions we got about the gym membership, kids club inquiry (Additional $40/kid and $20/spouse), and a tour of the facility. This gym is a Plantinum tier gym. There's a pool, hot tub, sauna, basketball court (volleyball and pickle ball options), cycle room, and yoga room. Personal trainer (2 sessions free within the first 30 days of signing up) included with the membership. Great experience and highly recommend checking out if in the area.

Genesis health club has been a fantastic experience for me. The gym has everything you need to workout, the club has a very diverse group who work out, great for young and old. And having my personal trainer Jon twice a week has given me results I haven’t had in 35 years!

Been going to this Genesis since may and have enjoyed it the most. Member since 2016 and to be totally honest Kat put me on to the best shake I’ve ever had and now order it everday. Update as of 4th of Dec, 2024.
I reported it to Independence Health Department. I also called the gym and told them about it. All the managers were out. Person at front desk said they'd leave a note so they could call me back about coming up with a better plan for cleanliness. It's been 2 days. No call.

Update as of 2 Dec, 2024: Moving this review from a 4 to a 2 star.
This is my usual gym. I've been going 5 days a week now. I just brought my partner and she got ringworm on her back right above where her leggings end. The only new place and exposure she would have had is at this gym. I said before they need to enforce wiping equipment.

THIS IS WHY. MAKE PEOPLE WIPE THE EQUIPMENT DOWN. JUST DO IT. put up signs about the spread of disease and infection. Do whatever you have to do. I'm reporting it regardless. I have not seen an increase in cleanliness. I am still one of the very few people that wipes the machine down before and after use with what I hope is good disinfectant. It's really watered down most days.

Been going here for about a year now? Staff is very kind at this particular Genesis. Probably the best Genesis I've been to. A lot of machine options, space, and has a pool. The bathroom is moderately clean on the regular. I even see a staff member routinely pick up trash in the parking lot. They deserve a pay raise imo.

My biggest critiques are 2 things:
- I RARELY see anyone wipe down their machines
- Very common that people don't rerack their weights.

This could be solved by:
- more signs
- insuring towels are always present
- staff kindly reminding people via intercom intermittently
--- or put it on the TVs that are specifically for Genesis music and info
- rewarding people they notice that do.
--- "Hello sir. We noticed you always rerack your weights and wipe down your machine. Here's a free smoothy coupon"

Positive reinforcement to keep the vibes good.

P.S. Oh and I guess another annoying thing is it's one of the few places with a pool. But there is usually someone meandering through multiple lanes or just walking in their own lane when you're trying to lap swim.

Great gym! Friendly staff! Juice bar with great protein shakes! It has everything you would want. Open 24 hours most nights. Impressive row of squat racks, dumbbells, benches, equipment (cable machines, regular machines, crossfit area, etc.). It's got a basketball court, pool, sauna, steam room, lap lanes. Towels to wipe equipment. Couldn't ask for more. Not one complaint. You can't beat the hours as well. About the closest you can get to 24/7 and it's a 2 story gym. Not those little crappy 24 hour gyms.

RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!

The bathroom/locker rooms are disgusting. Never any clean towels upfront. Half the people that go there should be on a register offenders list, and then when you go to cancel they make it nearly impossible.

I told the lady upfront that I wanted to cancel my membership and told me she would make note of it and pass it along to her managers. Never heard anything back until they called wanting $260 is past dues. I told the guy what happened and that I wanted to cancel my account to which he told me “I know which employee you’re taking about and we had to let her go”. So I’m still out two months worth of money because your employee couldn’t do their job right

Then my partner went up to cancel on the 30th even paid the $56 In owed dues only to be charged today another $80. When he called they told him that once you cancel it’s a 30 day notice for them and you’re still liable to pay a month.

This place is a joke and so are the people who run it

This gym seems to be in the best form that it's been in since 2014-2016 from a community standpoint. I've never seen a training team with less turnover. Angie, John, Tyler, Caleb, Cody and more have been there for years at this point doing great work. You never see that in this industry, they are a special personal training team coaching at the highest level of professionalism. I would recommend them to anyone.

As well the gym seems to be maintained very well and maintains a clean, open and organized feeling.

Machines are all smooth and still seem as new as they were on grand re-opening a few years ago. Shoutout Daniel.

I can't stress enough how big of a culture change it feels like this gym has had and how good it is for a big box gym. It makes me really happy to see it return to form across the board.

This gym had staffing issues that really hurt the company. Dirty locker rooms, lockers being horded by people that aren't in the gym, broken equipment, and no paper towels are a few issues that continue to hurt this gym. Telling the front desk does no good l, because none of the issues are resolved in a timely manner. The gym fees are not cheap, so why can't these issues get fixed immediately! The management has to care, and the issues above will not get fixed until they figure that out. SAVE YOUR MONEY A GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

I randomly got a call from a man with Genesis who said that my neighbors told him I'm "not working out" and asking me personal questions about my lifestyle. This was apparently all because my neighbors added me as an emergency contact, my lifestyle was not discussed and it was not disclosed to them that I would be contacted for solicitation. Very strange and intrusive.

My wife bought a membership to use this club in November with a Black Friday special and have been using it without a problem until recently. She was stopped and told she has the wrong membership for this club and that we need to pay more if she wants to continue. They wouldn't let her in without giving them more money even though I just paid the monthly membership a few days ago. It seems the shady sales practices have affected quite a few members as they said they have a lot of members with this problem. She spoke to Brandon who only wanted to tell her how it is and didn't care what she thought. I called and had the same problem. Brandon seemed to be pretty full of himself and just wanted to talk over me. I asked to speak to his boss and was refused. He said if you have a problem at WalMart to don't get to speak with the owner.. Very rude and condescending man who seemed quite taken with himself. Left a message at corporate. We'll see if they call back. This seems like shady sales practices that they want to make the customer's problem.

While more expensive than other gyms this place makes it worth it. In a day I can sit in the sauna then go hit the free weights, do a cool down in the pool or on a treadmill or elliptical then relax in the hot tub. Then you can wrap up your day with some yoga.

I have yet to see another gym that can offer all of that wrapped into a nice well maintained package.

The biggest problem I have is they have the smoothie bar but constantly out of ingredients. Last night for instance out of protein powder!! Gets frustrating.

Jason and Brent both helped me out a lot by providing a professional gym to get ready for my intense military training I’m going into in September. I went to almost every gym in the area as well to check out. I chose this place, why? Clean place, tons of equipment to isolate every muscle in your body. Great for all fitness levels and I see a lot of personal trainers that specialize in different goals no matter what they are. Friendly staff that are knowledgeable and it doesn’t matter if I need to do HIIT, powerlifting, cardio or focusing on breathing exercises in the pool they had it all. Not to mention if you forget your post work out shake they have a shake bar at the front counter. They offer classes as well. One stop gym. Even have a turf field. Thanks again 🇺🇸
