I came to cancel my membership and was told “you’re not gonna get your summer body” from front desk lady. To me it seemed like i was just body shamed. I laughed and told her it was too expensive for me and i’d rather go somewhere closer to my place of residence. Disappointed with that comment, as well as how difficult it is to cancel. I had to pay an extra $152 because i can’t continue my 6 month trial.

I had a frustrating experience with Genesis Health Clubs. When I signed up, I was told I could do a one-month membership, but I was charged for three additional months after that. Later on, I got charged again unexpectedly, even after I canceled. The cancellation policy and billing process are not very transparent, and it ended up costing me significantly more than I expected.

That being said, John Gomez, the manager, is great. He was helpful and easy to talk to, and I appreciated his professionalism. Unfortunately, the way Genesis handles payments and customer service makes it hard to trust them. If you’re considering joining, I’d recommend getting everything in writing and well understood to avoid surprises.

Edit to reply: John, you were the manager that my friend and I spoke with and filled out an incident report with. You were the manager that kept holding up an out of order sign to my face and repeating “that sucks”. This should not be the first time this is brought to your attention. You have had multiple chances to make this right, I am in the club almost daily. I even called last week and spoke with you about cancelling my membership. Your response below and what you have said to me directly do not match.

Not typically one to write a negative review but felt the need to share my experience at this club. A couple months into my membership I witnessed my friend get injured on a stair machine here. Let me be very clear she was not actively using the machine - she was simply stepping on to begin her workout and the stairs did not lock in place. The entire stair system gave out beneath her and she fell with all her body weight on to the machine / ground. The steps on this machine are about 2-feet off the floor so any type of fall will have an impact to the body. As a witness I immediately told management. Management held up an out of order sign to my face and kept repeating “that sucks”…. We filled out an injury report and were told that these stair machines require constant repairs. A few days after this I was approached by the same manager and was told that a third party maintenance provider serviced the machines, they ordered new parts and should be fixed now. However, months later the stair machines are still unsteady. The chains on the stairs will slip when in use and the entire machine wobbles.

It is understandable that members sign a waiver of liability for their own negligence. At what point is the gym held to a certain level of reliable and safe equipment? I strongly feel this club does not hold a high standard of integrity with their equipment. For the price of the membership the quality of the machines, building, and management does not align.

Well, several things here. Theres not enough check in card for all members, so I had to stop and give my name. Not a huge deal except half the time there wasn’t anyone there or they couldn’t find my name. Incompetence! There’s plenty of treadmills and elliptical machines but only one of every weight machine. They’re worn down and the treadmills and ellipticals are all different brands so get ready to learn a new machine every time you go in. Only warm water drinking fountain. Went to cancel, and they strung me along for 3 months charging me 50$ a pop/month running me in circles about when/how/exact date to cancel after my contract was up. Shouldn’t be that hard and reviews like this aren’t good for business. Definitely don’t recommend!

I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with the treatment I received at Genesis Health Clubs - Lee's Summit West. When I needed help canceling or changing my membership, I was met with resistance, misinformation, and condescending remarks. I was told that cancellations could only be done in person, despite my lack of transportation. It wasn’t until my brother took time off work to advocate for me that they finally took my concerns seriously and emailed me the documentation I had been requesting for weeks—the same documents they had previously claimed were impossible to send via email.

When I expressed my financial struggles and the need to cancel, I was told that exercising at the gym would improve my mental and physical health and even help me find a job—comments that were both unhelpful and offensive. The only solutions offered were to come in person to either switch to a cheaper plan or pay large cancellation fees.

Despite explaining my situation multiple times, I was given conflicting information and no real solutions. When my mother inquired about my membership badge the one time I was able to make it to the facility, she was falsely told that I wasn’t a member. This insinuated that I was using the gym without being a member, which was both hurtful and misleading. This experience has been exhausting and left me feeling unsupported—especially as a woman. Why was I only taken seriously when my brother came to advocate for me? Why was I spoken to harshly and falsely accused of things I didn’t do?

I will cancel my membership as soon as I am financially able to cover the substantial cancellation fees. When I do, I will never sign up with Genesis again—specifically not at this location. Furthermore, I will share my experience with others to ensure they are aware of the unacceptable treatment I have endured, both as a client and as a woman. I will never return to Genesis Health Clubs and sincerely hope they reconsider how they treat their members, particularly women.

I want to write a review about John Gomez. I got caught up in some financial debt and I was unable to pay it off because I had some other expenses tied up and other things. And I also was struggling with my health. John called me and told me that he could help me get back in the gym and pay off the payment that I owed to Genesis. When I got there, John was so nice and so courteous and he let me know that he believes in me and he's excited to see me get back into the gym. I've been going to this gym for about 30 days now. and John has been such a great help to me. But let me explain what I mean by he's been helping me. John took out of his day to help me get my eating together. He gave me a list of foods to eat and how to organize them and get them together. He's also helped me with working out. He showed me exercises to do and he gave me a routine so I can be committed to it and he encouraged me through it. Since John has been helping me, I have lost 20 pounds. I feel so much better about myself. My life and my finances are back in order all because John took a moment to look at my situation and put forth the effort to help me. Because of this I am back in the gym. I am down 20 pounds and I have a workout routine and eating routine to help me be successful. There's so much more I can say about John, but these are a few things that he has done to help me be successful in life. And he did not have to do this. It was out of the kindness of his heart that he blessed me and I'm forever grateful for what he has done. Anybody who's reading this post I want to encourage you guys to come to Genesis. I have been going to this Genesis location for many years with my boyfriend and his family. Recently, John Gomez took over management and things have been going south. The atmosphere has shifted and John has been very disrespectful to clients and made women feel uncomfortable. My boyfriend and my memberships were wrongly terminated one day because John’s feelings were hurt by another individual in the gym and he took it out on us. When we tried to get a business card from him so we could try to get things sorted out, he was standoffish and sketchy with us. He then all but shoved us out of the location when we mentioned talking with corporate to figure out what happened with our membership. I am deeply upset with this new shift in management and the uncomfortable environment.

I have been going to this gym for 6 years with no problems, until recently the new club manager John Gomez wrongfully terminated my girlfriend and I's membership. We didn't like his demeanor so we wanted to get a business card to get a hold of corporate he refused to give us a card and kicked us out and got into my girlfriends face to tell us to leave. This location honestly doesn’t even deserve one star. Communication has been atrocious, and it’s gotten to the point that I have literally had to block their number due to a multitude of phone calls. This has gotten extremely out of hand. This is why you don’t setup memberships via text🤷🏻‍♀️…..The manager reached out to me via email and has yet to reply to any of my emails. I’m honestly over it. I’ve gotten to workout once since I signed up and they’re asking me to drive 30 mins one way to workout at a specific location(non renovated) when I have a renovated location only ten minutes from my home. So make it make sense. They even offered free training sessions which I have not gotten to redeem due to the multitude of issues. It sucks because I really liked Genesis, but the staff needs some serious work !!! Soooo rude! Also membership was supposed to be $56/month and they have tried to charge me $200 in a single month 🤯

Very good at his job, well educated, explains the why behind form and more. I've been going to Genesis off and on for a while now. Used to live in Des Moines,
Iowa and South Suburban Genesis was probably the worst gym, cleanliness wise. I have seen several people say this specific gym is dirty. I wouldn't say it's dirty but it would be nice to have the same amenities and equipment as the Lees Summit Genesis over on Deerbrook because I signed up to go to Deerbrook but it's Soooo busy and actually feels smaller than this gym. I legit hated Deerbrook the first few months because of the crowds and lines for machines and after realizing this gym was about the same distance from me, I chose to go here. It's not the most AMAZING gym but it's quieter, nicer than some Genesis and the staff is always friendly. I definitely recommend but don't come when I'm there, I hate crowds. Haha just kidding 😂

I recently signed up at Genesis Gym, and I have to say, my experience has been far from what I expected.

First off, the equipment is often in disrepair. On multiple occasions, I found machines out of order, which really disrupted my workout routine. It seems like maintenance is not a priority for them.

Additionally, the cleanliness of the gym leaves a lot to be desired. I’ve noticed that the locker rooms and showers aren’t cleaned regularly, and it can be quite unpleasant.

Customer service has also been a letdown. When I tried to voice my concerns to the staff, they were dismissive and seemed uninterested in helping. It felt like I was bothering them rather than them being there to assist members.

Overall, I was hoping for a positive fitness experience at Genesis Gym, but unfortunately, I’ve been left feeling frustrated and disappointed. I would recommend looking elsewhere for a gym that truly values its members.

I wish I could rate this gym higher but unfortunately it's quickly going downhill.

The gym is DIRTY. No one cleans. You'll see the same sweat stains on treadmills for weeks. New stains on the carpet every few months. Trash in the form of paper towels are left in treadmill cup holders and never cleaned out. Dirty stains on the walls. The gym has an overall feel of being very unsanitary.

Many of the exercise machines are lacking. If something is broken, there is no telling when it will get fixed. This would be okay if there were multiple of the popular machines, but this gym has only one of each machine. It is hard to plan workouts around broken equipment. There should be a second leg extension at this gym. It's one machine that people often have to wait turns for. Same with the leg press. The stairmasters are constantly breaking or stalling/making noises. Hopefully those can get replaced. There are plenty of ellipticals that never get used and waste precious space that could be used for other useful equipment.

The women's locker room is sad. There are huge stains on the carpet. The paper towel dispensers are often broken or not loaded with new rolls. The sauna feels scary to use since everything else feels dirty.

Half the time no one is at the front desk or around to answer questions. It often feels like a ghost town.

Unfortunately, the gym is definitely not worth the price.
The only reason why I haven't left is because the people who go here are great!

I primarily use this gym for its sauna, but the membership fees, ranging from $50 to $80 per month, are difficult to justify given the limited equipment. The only quad extension machine has been out of order for several days, which is disappointing.

In comparison, I miss the amenities at LA Fitness on the East Coast. For $50 a month, members had access to a pool, basketball court, sauna, and multiple leg extension machines.

The gym itself is lackluster. While the bathrooms are clean and the sauna, though small, functions adequately, the staff presence is minimal. Only about three staff members stand out: the general manager, a personal trainer, and a front desk employee who is consistently reliable. The rest of the staff are rarely seen.

I continue to use the gym mainly for the sauna, but I am frustrated by the lack of essential equipment, especially at this price point.

Been a 3 year consistent member and unfortunately this gym is at the lowest point I've currently ever seen it.
The lack of care towards the machines is unacceptable. If a machine breaks here you can expect a week to two weeks MINIMUM for it to be fixed again. The upholstery is cracked and torn enough to leave marks and scratches on your skin which fortunately they have gotten better at, but expect a month for them to get around to put a band-aid over it.
Overall the quality of the machines have gotten poor, and most of them need to be fully replaced.
The cardio section with all the treadmills is WAY too large and wasted space and could better be used for replicant equipment to reduce the load of the highly used machines so that they don't break so often and could allow for more people to do the same workout at once.
You only get one leg-extension machine that you can expect to wait in line for (when its not broken).
Torn up and dirty carpet, stains on the walls, and unclean machines.
The staff have also gotten lazy. If you were to leave something in a cupholder on one of the numerous treadmills there, you can expect to find it weeks later still there because none of them actually walk the floor for out of place items or weights that should be re-racked. Most of the time they just sit up front talking.
Fortunately the gym does just about have the full package for any regular gym-goer and this review gets 2-stars as opposed to one due to the fact that it is a somewhat functioning gym and the community is amazing. The vast majority of those who go here are friendly and willing to offer assistance.
It's a shame that those who have been here and have established themselves here suffer the poor maintenance and neglect that this gym has seen recently.

If you are willing to spend $60 a month and an added $40 for an annual fee, go to another location. You will not get your moneys worth here.

I've been a member for 10+ years. I visited this location while out of town for a Boxing tournament with my trainer. Needed to get my daily workout in for my upcoming fight. This gym has always been run down, but it has gotten to a whole new level of filth. I don't know if anyone is cleaning it, but if they are it is completely insufficient. The bathrooms don't have working soap dispensers, never have toilet paper, have feces on the walls, floors are horrendous. Carpet throughout the entire building is extremely filthy and stained up, bubbling and ripped. Since you definitely don't want to get down on the floor there are mats as an option.....BUT the Mats are all worn through and foam is all cracked and shredding so you know they're not even able to be sanitized between users. There are so few treadmills thats don't malfunction while on them, give an error message and change the incline or speed randomly throughout your workout (no they are not on auto settings.) Walls are extremely beat up as well. The membership pricing is not okay for the level of quality that is given in this gym. At bare minimum hire a savvy cleaning crew and when equipment becomes broken or a health risk discard and replace. I've been a member for two plus years and I've overlooked alot but tonight I got overly grossed out with it's new level of neglect.

I have been going to this gym since it was Summit Fitness, then Aspen Athletic Club, then Gold's Gym, and finally Genesis. No renovations, updates, or cleanings have been done to this gym since Aspen Athletic Club owned the space. The carpet is filthy and there are holes in the drywall. You would think that they could keep the place nice with all the money they collect from overpriced yearly membership contracts. Inflation may be bad in today's economy, but Genesis takes it to the next level. They add on admission and processing fees for new memberships just so they can waive them during "promotions" and make you feel like you are getting a good deal, but you are still paying for an overpriced membership that you get locked into with contracts. The employment turnover is very high at this business because they pay a very low hourly wage and pressure employees to make money by making sales and gaining incentives. Essentially, all this business cares about is making money and it is a shame. The only reason they are ranked higher on Google is because they gave away free t-shirts in exchange for 5-star reviews (no joke, read the other reviews) which speaks volumes. Look around the area and there are still gyms that have not yet been bought out by Genesis that care more about your health than the thickness of your wallet.

Showers don't well, the only soap is gojo(the cheapest soap ever, as all jails & prisons use it), tiny locker room, no amenities like handsoap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream or anything else most Genesis provide. Even still, it's better than planet fitness... But just barely...

Go to Olathe and see for yourself hardly no Hammer Strength and the few they have are old and tattered. The facility could use some TLC and a visit from the health department. 291 is marginally better

Update 1/17/23: Small improvements, but still the forgotten Genesis. They gave away free tshirts in exchange for positive Google reviews, which is hilarious. Previously a one star rating, but the gym has reupholstered benches and painted a few spots, so I removed those pictures. The best thing going for this place may be the staff and friendly trainers.

The Forgotten Genesis. Other Genesis locations are somewhat recently renovated or in better shape. I appreciate a little grunge to my gym, but this seems like neglect. A little love would go a long way to make this place seem a little nicer. I’m always hunting down scarce plates and none of them match. Feels like they were found at various garage sales. Then they text me about a promotional meal plan? Why would I order food from a place that looks like this? Do better. I’ll happily delete/update this when things change.

Been working out here since mid-November and I love the facility. Always clean, machines always work and never overcrowded. My trainers Alex Kimble is extremely knowledgeable and do a great job tailoring the workout to his clients needs and abilities. I definitely recommend this gym and Alex to anyone looking for a good place to stay fit or build on their current fitness.

Absolutely excellent gym! From Bryce and whole rest of the sales team. I myself work in the fitness industry and they are all top notch and do everything they can to make the gym feel welcoming, inviting, and safe. Don’t get me wrong, I love Genesis. I attend classes offered there 3-4 times a week. Christa and Angie are amazing Zumba instructors and Michelle does a great job leading Group Power.

The reason for my low review is the due to condition of the facility. The weights are literally pealing their coating, the bars are rusting, the ceiling is stained from leaks, the mats are pitted and the floor is buckling.

This facility needs a makeover in the worst way! I also attend classes at the east facility and it is awesome. (Jody is a great Zumba instructor). Now it’s time to invest in the west facility as well!

The Kids Club is great! Ashlei and Destiny have been amazing and very welcoming. They are always excited to see my baby boy when we arrive at kids club and take such good care of him. I recommend this specific Genesis Kids Club to any of my friends with kiddos.

Genesis has group classes for all preferences and I found several classes to suit me. I participate in Zumba classes since I love to exercise to dance. I also do water aerobics and weights classes. There is something for everyone.
