Great facility with helpful staff, excellent vibes. Extensive selection of equipment for every body part. The only pain will be in your muscles after a tough workout, everything else is no pain at all!

I'm from out of state, I came to this gym last year when Joe owned it. It was absolutely fabulous!
I am in town again for another week and I love the equipment and Atmoshere... But it's overly clean.. The tall, skinny blonde and overly tan girl at the desk was cleaning furiously when I got here and all of her products gave me a miserable headache!! Otherwise, I rate 5/5!!

Very large gym, mostly for serious bodybuilding, but it does have a dedicated area for weight lifting and power lifting. Often, it becomes very crowded, and that is the only negative. I went almost every day at different times, and it always seemed too crowded for me. Wide variety of different machines. The crowd is mostly people serious about training. Very little talking, all training.

I had a very uncomfortable experience at House of Pain. I initially went in just to use the restroom, and the front desk staff was kind enough to escort me there, which I appreciated. However, once I reached the restroom area, I encountered a large black dog. I have a deep fear of dogs, and this situation triggered real distress.

When I tried to avoid the dog, there was a brief encounter with the owners who told me I couldn’t use the restroom without a membership. I understand and respect that policy, and I don’t blame them for that. What truly upset me was how I was treated by other people in the gym. Instead of compassion or understanding, I was met with hostility. I was mocked, yelled at, and aggressively told to leave.

The atmosphere quickly turned hostile and unwelcoming, and I couldn’t help but feel that the treatment I received was not just rude and unprofessional but racially and culturally motivated. As a visibly Muslim woman, I was made to feel like I didn’t belong. No one deserves to be treated that way, especially not in a public space.

This experience left me shaken. I truly hope the gym reevaluates how they handle situations with non-members and how they treat people who are different from their regular clientele.

Response to House of Pain: Thank you for your response, but I’m disappointed by the way my concerns have been dismissed and reframed. I want to clarify that my reaction was out of genuine fear. I have a strong phobia of dogs, and when I encountered one unexpectedly in your gym, I panicked — something that can happen involuntarily to anyone in distress. To suggest that I was “screaming and carrying on” without acknowledging the reason for that response feels unfair and lacks compassion.

Instead of addressing the situation with empathy, I was treated with hostility and made to feel like an intruder. A more appropriate and professional response would have been to calmly help me exit the space and ensure I was okay, especially given that I posed no threat to anyone. As a guest and fellow human being, I expected at least a basic level of understanding.

I understand your policies, but the way this was handled reflects a lack of sensitivity. I hope in the future, your team will choose to de-escalate with kindness rather than blame, especially when someone is visibly distressed.

I have worked in various gyms, owned my own facilities, and been to gyms around the country and this is one of the best. The gym is clean and has plenty of equipment just like many other gyms in STL. Unfortunately, I cannot get accurate information from staff regarding pricing and billing. It’s been an ongoing nightmare since January. They eventually made most of it right after long drawn out processes with plenty of misinformation along the way. It got to the point where I just don’t believe anything any of their employees or managers say. I’m not sure if they are lying to folks or just incompetent but either way there’s other gyms in St. Louis that bill correctly and have nice gyms.

We recently visited this gym during a visit to the St. Louis area. We drove past and my husband saw it from the highway and we immediately knew we had to go. The gym is accommodating to all types of fitness enthusiasts. The selection of equipment is insane. The staff was super friendly. We briefly talked to the owner and you can tell that he loves what he does! We will defiantly be coming back the next time we are in town.

My impression from touring this gym

Stopped by with my friend to check this gym out this morning and we left very impressed!

This gym is the best stocked gym I've ever seen and features every machine and dumbbell you'll ever need to meet your specific goals.

The people working out were also very friendly and it was a good mix of ages from early 20s to late 60s.

The women's restroom was also extremely clean. Dry sauna and plenty of individual showers, bathroom stalls, and lockers.

Our tour guide Louis was knowledgeable, friendly, and answered all of our questions. I really appreciated that there was absolutely no pressure to join the gym at the end of the tour.

I'm def going to come back with my husband to see if this gym works for him as well.

Amazing gym community to be apart of. The area is for every type of weight lifter from casual lifters to strongmen. Not only that, the owner, joe, is a great guy that walks around the place sparking up conversations with everyone no matter if he knows you or not. I cant think of anything negative about the gym besides it being a little crowded with machines

ALLERGY WARNING- This gym has fallen very far from its glory days. It used to be an amazing gym, but now all that remains are good machines.

And even with that it doesn't redeem the level of filth this gym has. The first photo is from a machine that's been here for TWO WEEKS. Imagine the ones that have never been cleaned. I've never once seen them move/clean machines, sweep or mop the floor, the whole gym is littered with trash and dust bunnies.

My last few workouts here have been miserable. The air is so heavy that when you workout intensely it can be hard to breath.

Although, the workers don't even get paid enough to do that level of cleaning in the first place.

I used to love this gym and hate to see what it's become.

Easily the best gym in a 200+ mile spread. They literally have everything you can think of for equipment. From 5 pound dumbbells all the way up to 200 pound dumbbells. Tons of machines with enough weights to not have to wait on weights. Even enough room to use the machine without bumping into other. Super clean all the way around. Very friendly and fun staff especially Joe the owner! Such a cool guy with an amazing attitude even when moving his whole gym. Absolute pleasure to workout here and I look forward to coming back as much as possible as they are now in Chesterfield vs Maryland Heights. Handicap accessible and parking. Showers in the restrooms. Sauna, red room, classes, this place has it all plus some. Even it's own room for power lifting 🫴 💪 Look forward to seeing the new place all put together! Thx for being a pleasure to move Joe. I would have loved a tee-shirt though at the least lol!

I signed up for the House of Pain exactly a week ago and I was so excited to finally found a gym close by my house after moving to St. Louis but I cancelled my membership today. I can not deny the variety of equipment is great but the main reason I cancelled my membership is cleanliness of the gym. The equipments are not clean and I think they have not been cleaned for a long time. so sorry to write this weak review but I think with pretty much high cost of membership, the area and equipment must be more clean and newer. anyway, after a week although I paid activation fee and first month membership, I cancelled.

Can I start by saying, “Thank you House of Pain for not blasting background music.” I always hate when gyms blast the background music as each person has their own type of music they work out to best. I am also a fan of the “no sitting on you phone” policy. Most gyms I’ve been to have that one person who don’t just change the music on their phone to get a good pump, but go on social media and take up the equipment for 20 minutes. Also I am so happy that the other members here are so polite and willing to help when hitting new PRs. I am so glad I found a gym that is for my goals and also happy they offer a student discount too. Even though the gym is on the pricier side, it is well worth it.

This is a lifters gym. Tons and tons of equipment and options for lifting to build muscle. Great decor with all the classic bodybuilders up above for inspiration. I got a day pass and literally tried every machine they had for the back, they had incredible variety and selection. Front desk even had straps to borrow as I forgot my own.

Amenities are minimal, do not expect spa like facilities here (it's pretty clear they don't misrepresent this at all). Very clear focus on the fitness equipment.

Very happy with the experience overall.

The staff is accommodating, especially Antonio who went above and beyond for me last month! As I was walking to my car when it was dark outside, Antonio noticed a random man lingering in the parking lot....seeming to wait to talk to me. The man approached me and started a conversation. As I was continued to my car Antonio comes outside and starts talking to me, with the man just a few feet away from us, asking me if I had a good workout, is everything ok etc. It worked and the man scooted out of the area without incident. I told Antonio he didn't have to do that, he said "It's dark, you're walking to your car alone and there's a random guy hanging out in the parking lot, I just wanted to make sure you got to your car safely.". What a FANTASTIC person Antonio is! Who knows what would have happened without him. I'm very thankful he was there. THANK YOU ANTONIO!

Best gym in St Louis hands down. Was lucky enough to move back from NYC a few years ago right when House of Pain first opened. I found a family here that was so welcoming and friendly. Accepting of absolutely everyone. The owner, Joe, is one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of meeting and he is always on the floor introducing himself to new faces at the gym.

The equipment is impeccable and everything is very clean. You will find whatever you need here- from power lifter, bodybuilder, to cardio enthusiast, they have it all. Everyone here is super focused on self improvement- it's such a breath of fresh air. If you are a newbie to the gym, I know without a doubt any one person here would be more than happy to help out and explain machines. Such a welcoming atmosphere with a ton of great people.

They just finished an expansion that made this great place even better. Highly recommend 10/10!!!

I went here for a few months. Don't waste your money though. The equipment is old and outdated.
When I tried to call to get information to cancel they put me on hold and then wouldn't answer when I called back.
I called a few days later and was told by an employee it was too late to avoid the next membership fee but he would ask the manager if she would help me out since no one would answer the last time I tried to call.
I went and talked to the manager in person and sign the cancellation papers. At first she said she would see what she could do about the membership fee for me. Then changed her statement to say she can't do anything because it was already too late when I called the first time. She then informed me that they actually need 30 days notice to cancel a membership. Why didn't she say that originally instead of saying she'll see what she could do to help? By that logic you will almost always be forced to pay for an extra month after you wish to cancel.
That is an absolute SCAM of a cancellation policy.
Also, when I started my membership I bought a jump start session with a trainer. He said he would make me a Google sheet with a daily program. 3 weeks later I still didn't have it. After I finally got it he deleted it before I had a chance to copy it. I had to ask him multiple times to send it to me again.

I've been a HoP member for 1.5 years. The best thing about this gym is the atmosphere. People who want to lift, are respectful, and kind to one another. I've never seen anything like it. There is enough equipment to go around, and a lot of great choices. Never have to wait for anything as there are always alternatives to choose from.
My issues with this gym are with the cleanliness and orderliness. Upon walking through the parking lot you'll see trash all over the ground and weeds. There is equipment and tarps laying around the side bay door. Cardio machines have a sweat film on the main part under the consoles where your feet would hit if you moved them too far up. The dumbbells are also consistently loose, and I know I can get the Alan wrench. But an employee can definitely do this maybe like twice a day, morning and evening. Organization has gotten better in the last couple months since the owner has made an appearance.

I'm a 47 yr old woman who's had 7 kids and I quit smoking 4 months ago. I've never purposely worked out a day in my life lol. My 25 yr old son Jason started working out 3 years ago and he started going to the House of Pain gym a couple of months ago. He invited me to join him so I thought I'd give it a try for a month and see how committed I could be. Turns out that since I've been working out with him that I'm getting healthier and most importantly my bond with him has gotten soooo strong. Now I've got my youngest son who's 14 going to the gym with me! Also Jason's girlfriend is now going to the gym with us! I'm also convincing a few friends to join! I'm so excited about this new experience in my life. Mind you I do have to force myself to go into the gym when I've got nobody to go with but then I remember all the wonderful helpful members and staff that are there. The machines are great and have directions on how to use most of them. If they don't then all you have to do is ask someone for help. Usually there's no wait time to use a machine. If there is then it's usually not to long if a wait. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! THANK YOU for bringing my kids closer to me and helping us get healthy ❤️❤️❤️❤️

BTW EXTREMELY SANITARY & EVERYONE IS COURTEOUS

I’ve been a member of HOP since it opened in Chesterfield. It’s definitely among the best gyms in the area! (And I’ve been to many of them.)

Great place to workout. They have all the equipment you can think of.
I like the atmosphere, very motivating. They follow covid precautions, but if you don't want to wear a mask you sign a waiver. Member rates are good with no contract. Highly recommend if you're sick of those commercial gyms. Support your small businesses.

If you are into lifting and like the vibe of an old school kinda gym - this place is for you. LOVE it! Well maintained, clean and an array of equipment options.

Thanks Joe, for opening a second "House of Pain" and taking over the space vacated by Gold's Gym on Dorsett. Forever grateful!

This is a great old school gym where you get what you put out of it. It has an intense atmosphere to get anyone psyched up for a good pump i don't even bring my headphones to this gym anymore. The people there all all hard workers and if you want to work harder than ever with some of the best equipment out there this is the place to go. The results will show! I gained 20 lbs of muscle at this gym all natural because I loved going and loved the gym and consistency is key. Best gym experience I've ever had!

I've been a member of lots of different types of gyms (small and large, one-offs and chains, powerlifting centered and jack-of-all trades) and I have to say HOP is definitely near the top of the list or possibly even the best. They have made great use of rehabing the Gold's that used to be here with constant upgrades. I thoroughly appreciate the dedicated spaces for different workout types (aerobic, cardio equipment but not an overwhelming machine count, a dedicated powerlifting corner, cross fit and strongman zone, free weights and machines, etc). The atmosphere is great too with friendly staff and fellow gym members as well as some fun wall decorations that take pride in gym athletes both past and present. The monthly fee of $40 is worth it for me, especially considering it is month-to-month (read: no annual contracts).

Very friendly and helpful staff, amazing atmosphere and equipment. The HOP is putting their style throughout the previously owned gym. The gym is great but the people are what make this place. I hope to see one in the St. Peter’s area one day!

I have never been to this gym; however, I have been searching for a place that can push me.

I am writing this review because the sheepole who have commented negatively do not realize this is the land of the free. They are free to stay home if they are afraid.

People quickly forget that their health is essential. This place is offering health essentials which IS prescribed regularly by the medical field. The argument is no longer what is essential. The medical facts do not align. Our FACTS simply don’t care about YOUR opinions.

Unfortunately our local St Louis County government overreach goes against many of our freedoms. Including holding “inspection” permits against private apartment complexes to force them to not open their private pools for residents.

The owner(s) of this place should be commended for standing up for their rights and freedoms. I will
be calling to see how I can get some help from them and support a local business.

Amazing place with the best equipment, atmosphere, and (most importantly) people in the St. Louis area. The owner should be highly commended for standing up to what amounts to no less than an egregious abuse of power by the county. Thank you HOP family for doing the right thing!

Haven't felt so good mentally in weeks, so nice to get some stress relief. As a police officer, nothing has changed in my life as far as stress. I use working out as a metal health work out as much as physical. I can't thank this gym enough for being there for those of us that need this therapy in these times.

Apparently, they don't care if people get sick, and potentially die. Their actions speak louder than their words.
Update: You're not clean enough. Are you cleaning the air in there? New air filtration systems? Anything besides comparing yourself to an actual essential business?

Great gym. They are standing up for what’s right.

If you are afraid of getting sick and listen to everything the media tells you then stay home. Don’t make businesses suffer. This is a free country. You are free to stay home and people are free to go to an open gym if they want. Also the statistics show people under 60 have a 1 in 10,000 chance of dying if they get it. If you’re afraid of those odds you have worse things to worry about.

I live nearby and was curious about this place when it opened after Gold's Gym closed. Not anymore. I can't believe how selfish and greedy these people are to risk public health for the sake of money. People breathing heavily in a closed gym space, during a global pandemic with a highly contagious disease that has killed thousands...just how is that a good idea? Do you not care about protecting the health of your community? Awful business.

Justin was nice enough to tell my friends and I to come check out the gym for a 1 day free pass and I was thinking about signing up for it but when I came the white guy with knock-knees (don’t know his name) that was at the front desk told me I couldn’t check it out. And I ask him to just let me walk around and take a look, while I was walking around and checking out the gym he left the front desk and followed me around just to check if I wasn’t working out. Not to mention the $40 monthly membership price is outrageous.

The House of Pain is the BEST gym to inspire and motivate - hands down! The energy and vibe is ineffable, you have to experience for yourself to know. People of all fitness levels but everyone working hard on their goals! There are bodybuilders, powerlifters, strongmen - everyone from top athletes to people just beginning their journey. Incredible equipment, personal trainers, Krav Maga, Kickboxing, MMA, Thai Striking, Power and Yin Yoga and Boot camp classes and a Prime Wellness Center right next door. Its a one stop shop of inspiration, motivation and everything you need for your health and fitness! It has become my home away from home and the people like family. This is where it's at!

If you're serious about lifting, especially bodybuilding, this place is your new home. The equipment is excellent and well maintained, a combination of state of the art and classic, old school equipment. Murals of bodybuilders and strongmen line the walls and music is blasting. The owner clearly cares deeply about the gym and every person who walks through the door. I truly cannot recommend this place highly enough.

As soon as you walk in, you can feel the energy. The hard work, the sweat, the blood, the tears, and the passion. This isnt your ordinary gym. It is a school for learning. To overcome adversity and to become better. Joe, the owner, is an amazing and kind individual who has a passion for the sport of bodybuilding and will take time out of his day to welcome you and have a conversation. I wouldnt have had the chance to listen and learn from Tom Platz if it wasnt for this place. This is where you go if you want to be a part of a culture of willpower and discipline. Thank you Joe and the House of Pain for always welcoming me into your home. Your generosity has allowed me to not only help fuel my fire for bodybuilding but to learn more about myself in all aspects of life.
