This was my little man and i’s first time climbing with these guys in lees summit and it was amazing. From the hospitality to the training when we came in and walking us through. Not to mention the cute girl at the counter that’s also a pre school teacher I over heard her talking about. 🤪 she’s very good with the kiddos even when there were some not listening so well. Definitely a family friendly environment. 10/10 recommend and we will be back.

This review is sincere constructive criticism. This is not a very good gym for bouldering. The bouldering area is extremely small and the grading is significantly sandbagged. Not only have I experienced it myself but I've heard this same sentiment from other climbers I've met at my regular climbing gym as well as others on outdoor climbing trips. Where you may climb a V3-4 somewhere else, you will struggle with V1-2's here. There's a very minimal amount of walls with only 1 route per grade on a wall. So there's only about 5 routes for you for whichever grade you can successfully climb at here. And especially when they route one wall to be designated as their "expert wall" that leaves even less routes for you to potentially climb.

Especially for a beginner. I began my climbing here awhile back and quickly developed a back injury since the grades are too difficult. Theres a significant lack of being able to develop proper technique and form and you're almost always forced to instead do most things with just brute strength. Thankfully, there's better bouldering gyms in the area that give you the tools and resources to successfully progress and be able to climb at a proficient level.

If you try to voice these concerns they'll tell you that the gym is geared more for outdoor bouldering. That feels very elitist and gatekeeping to your regular hobbyists.

I came today for a day pass after climbing at a different gym for awhile just for the heck of it and I was quickly reminded as to why I left. For $25 a person, it feels like a big scam if you're only trying to boulder.

This climbing gym is great! They are welcoming for groups, we just recently had a good-bye party here (with small children as well) and had a fruit tray, chips, and salsa on the table next to the front desk. Kids were entertained and could climb on the bouldering walls and "TreadClimber" upstairs, or with child harnesses (also rentable here) on the easy routes. Ibex is smaller than RoKC, but the climbing is just as good.

One of my favorite climbing gyms in town. Lead, top rope, auto belay, and a little bouldering.

Their new insurance is a little bit of a hassle for redoing things you have done recently if you aren't up there frequently.

But, the staff is friendly and they have a small selection of harnesses, shoes, chalk bags and such.

They do have an overhang that you can lead climb across under which is fun and unique in the KC indoor gym arena ... If you are lead certified and have the endurance.

Upstate they have a small bouldering area and an adjustable, endless climbing "treadmill".

They have a small vending machine with mostly junk food, a few Cliff bar type items.

Not the biggest indoor gym in KC, but pretty well done and one of the oldest.

Worth a visit.

If you are not in to climbing don’t waste your time here.
They only have a few lines for kids or beginners, second floor is boring and small.
The guy at the front desk was like in a bad mood and not very happy with his job.
Then that other attendant was staring at us the whole time
Until i look at her directly for a few seconds and then she left ( i am not sure what i was doing wrong)

This wasn’t for us

The one star is for the customer service

Alright, I am not usually one to go give a place a bad review I really try not to because I know how devastating it can be for a business but honestly idk what else will make me feel better about this situation I went through today at this location and just my overall experience… I brought in my two kids 7 & 8 we previously had bought a pass for like 15 times to come in which isn’t cheap but I don’t think we’ll be back which is unfortunate that I’ll have to be out that money but I know I’ll never go back and I doubt we’ll be able to talk my son into going back. When we walked in the man working (Todd) was acting so so discombobulated about my kids being “hyper” I mean come on, they’re kids about to get to climb big walls of course they’re excited! But, after a tough time figuring out their shoe sizes he came around to show me how to get the harness on my daughter. As he is putting the harness on and telling me how to do it my daughter starts talking, he LITERALLY put both his thumbs on her mouth and his fingers on her face to try and shut her lips and told her to be quiet and that he knows she’s excited but she’s hyper. I am extremely uncomfortable, obv my daughter is too but i unfortunately as a woman feel super awkward in this moment and laugh it off but I wish more than anything I would’ve been like ok, enough, that’s unacceptable and we’re going to go ahead and leave but I didn’t and so then he proceeds to be super rude to my son about him picking out shoes. Unbeknownst to him, my son has a disorder and sensory problems are included in this and so I knew this was prob going to trigger him with this guy trying to make comments and be rude about my son picking shoes that were “too big” on him because they will just slide off. I understand the fact that shoes are supposed to be a little tight but also, come on, he’s a kid and is being strapped in and it really isn’t that serious for a kid to have correctly fitted shoes if he literally states out loud they’re too uncomfortable and he’d rather not. The guy was just pretty relentless and rude about it. So from there he shows me how to get them going on the actual wall but is just annoyed by my children the whole time and you could clearly tell and he just came off as super pretentious and the whole situation just was off putting to even make me want to stay. I mean we came when literally no one else was there, he had the time to take his time and be patient and more friendly but he wasn’t and that’s annoying when you’re in a “customer service position” and are getting paid to do this. It’s like we were inconveniencing him or something. Also, I had to clip them in and take them off each time, they weren’t allowed to do it themselves according to him so when my son or daughter wanted to go to another spot on the other side of the mats I had to run over and help them and run back to get the other and back and forth so that was kind of impossible to do without them having to wait between me strapping one or the other in somewhere and I just thought that was stupid since other times we’ve came they’ve been able to get themselves in and going but idk about that. Then my son wanted to go upstairs to the rock wall where you don’t strap in at all and went and asked Todd and Todd said he couldn’t go alone so I had to talk my daughter into stopping downstairs so we all could go up. Of course my son had a meltdown about the shoes and we were there prob less than thirty mins after we actually got on the mats… ugh, I don’t know why but this whole experience was just so disheartening and like I said I won’t be back. I’ve been three or four times and every time I feel like the people working have some weird power trip where they think they can just act stuck up and rude. Also, him touching my daughter like that I can’t get out of my head and that’s what I’m most mad about. Don’t put your thumbs on my daughters lips to try and physically close her mouth to stop her from talking, that’s gross and so inappropriate in so many ways. I honestly hope that it’s on tape and the owner can watch.

We had our sons 7th birthday party up there this evening with 11 of his friends. At first the employees spent around 30 minutes explain safety and how to properly use the equipment. Completely understand as safety has to be a huge liability for a business like this. During the next hour and a half the kids had fun, but when some of them got loud the employees continued to get on to the kids and tell them there was no yelling or screaming aloud. It’s a 7 year old birthday party with 12 kids? Do you not think there would be some excitement? Finally the last time the kids got loud an employee, Gail, came flying up the stairs and screamed for all the kids to come to her and SIT DOWN! She was rude to the kids, and us parents had enough. Gail then decided to argue with one of the mothers in how she was talking to her daughter. Terrible way to treat paying customers. I spent $275 to have a 2 hour climbing party, for two of the employees to scream and be rude to the kids. I would not recommend having any children’s birthday party there. The sign outside says open to the public. May consider changing to Open to the public, only if your a serious indoor climber that is quite. Don’t waste your time or money patronizing this business.

Had really poor customer service from James the second we walked into the facility. Seemed like he didn’t want to be there. After we signed waivers and he charged us he told us to put stuff in the cubbies and then get are stuff on and wait for him. So we did. After about 10 min of waiting while he was on the computer (we thought he might have been busy) my friend finally said hey I think we are ready. He looks up and says “ready for what?” We said you told us to wait. He then treats us like we are two years old. I see him walk with his shoes on the mat so I leave mine on and he scolds me to take mine off. Which I nicely complied. But thought that was a bit weird. He then rambles in one place about how to clip a carabiner for the auto belay in a pretty poor demonstration (as a professional in the industry I let a lot of the technical and teaching stuff pass) then gives a very inadequate top rope belay test. Again letting this pass. I finally had to say something as his entire attitude was like he didn’t want to be there. This really set our climbing session off to a bad start. We were planning to come back every day this week as we are here on work. We will definitely check out some other gyms now.
After traveling the world and climbing at hundreds of gyms, I’d say this was one of the worst experiences I have had. But I guess I am used to most being good.

All the other folks we met there were really nice. So an extra star for that.

IBEX Climbing Gym is great for climbing enthusiasts. Be sure you have endurance, stamina, and are physically fit to get all this gym has to offer. My 11 year old wanted to rock wall climb since his first experience with the playground rock wall when he was old enough to climb. So I figured this would provide him an amazing fun time like a trampoline park. My son and his friend did the clip in walls and the rock wall treadmill for a little while, but for someone going with their kids expecting an experience like Skyzone, it's definitely not the same freedom for kids, nor the variety of activities. They have one side for kids, with a few difficulty options to clip in and climb and one side for adults to clip in and climb. In the middle is a large rock to climb for adults with just rope options. Upstairs is a small area that provides a rock wall treadmill and a few other climbing options. Overall, my son and his friend enjoyed themselves, but it's not something they wanted to go back and do right away.

I brought two 6 year olds by myself on a Monday afternoon (6/19/23) and honestly it could not have gone better. The staff- 10/10, wish I would’ve gotten their names because they were outstanding. Explained everything patiently and in detail- not only what the rules were but why the rules were created so everyone would stay safe. They checked in on us and made sure we were doing well- one of us got a bit scared towards the top and he climbed up next to her to show her how to push off the wall- it was an empowering thing to do instead of yell at her from the floor, which was the route I had gone 🤦‍♀️. We stayed 3 hours and I bet the kids won’t go a week without asking to go back. There was even a boy upstairs bouldering who showed the kids how to fall and which routes would work best for them- Joseph was his name- not sure if he worked there or not, but we greatly appreciated the assistance and it made for a wonderful experience throughout the climbing gym. Glad to have such a fun place so close to home!

Good variety of routes, they have ~7-8 auto belaying, I'd guess 18+ top ropes, and 10+ lead climbing routes, and then bouldering upstairs. Super clean, loose chalk is not permitted so we had to start purchasing liquid chalk but love that we aren't fighting for routes. Our last gym in Austin, TX..there would be days we'd go and get maybe 3 routes in then give up bc it was so crowded...so this is refreshing for us!

Pros:
-You can take your shirt off.
-Cool features in the wall (cracks).
-Cool handholds and footholds.
-Decent setting.
-Solid tall wall.

Cons:
-No loose chalk.
-Lack of training equipment.
-Bouldering area had poor lighting, and combined with the unusual color scheme, it was hard to determine where routes were.
-Not clear if cracks, volumes, and aretes were on or off climbs.
-The staff seemed slightly grumpy and were a little disagreeable.

-I would come back on a special occasion. Not the best place to train, but if you're looking for some spicy lead/top rope then this is the place to go.

Very disappointed with how I was greeted when we walked in today with a large group, as someone who requires hearing aids and is unable to function without them I was refused service. I am very familiar with the mask mandate in Jackson County, I’ve been dealing with it for almost a year now. The mask mandate clearly states if you are unable to wear a mask because of a medical condition they are not able to refuse service. We try and support local businesses as often as we can with everything that is happening, we were very disappointed that we had to make other plans because of the treatment we received this morning.

Really accurate setting and right off i-70! Can’t miss if you’re board of driving and want to climb some quality plastic! Holds were grippy and well kept, Todd the owner was very nice and gave a quick belay test to get us climbing fast.

My favorite place to climb when I'm in Kansas City! Ibex is where I learned to climb so it has a special place in my heart. Competitions there are always so much fun.

Really a great climbing gym been going here for years. Has a lot of variety for top rope, lead climbing and bouldering and we really like family nights on Fridays. I wish they had not gotten rid of separate pricing for just bouldering It was nice being able to go and just do bouldering for a lower price.

Great climbing gym. My only complaint is I wish they had a regular gym with weights attached to it like some of the newer ones have. Not worth losing a star because they’re still great.

Did this as a scout overnight for climbing merit badge. This place was awesome and all kids had a great time. The staff you could tell had great knowledge on climbing. The staff took great time going over everything from safety to having a good time. We had kids wanting to do it again the next day. Overall I would recommend this for scouts 13 years and above. The overnight experience was great.

Extremely nice staff, very fun activity. I walked in about 1.5 hours before closing and got the day pass, and it still was worth every penny.

May not be the biggest climbing gym in the area but it has the best route setting.

Really unique place with fantastic instruction for my novice climbing child. Really focused on safety, but they don't take the fun out of the activity itself.

Absolutely amazing staff and the Owner was very nice and helpful. Very knowledgeable about climbing and equipment. I recommend this place to everyone from beginners to experts. The climbs are rated very honestly. They have auto belay so that is very nice if you plan to go alone and don't want to bug anyone.
