We went to take a tour of this YMCA location because we were interested in the family membership. The staff were friendly and showed us around, but the facilities were quite worn down and the clientele was mostly a very old crowd. Which isn’t inherently a bad thing, but the vibes were dead. Absolutely no atmosphere at all. Once again, nice staff, but we are hesitating on joining because this place needs a re-vamp. Also, it’s strange that they keep your drivers licenses during the tour. We had to wait for them to be handed back.

Off putting guy in the sauna staring at women EVERY single day. Essentially if you’re a woman you won’t be using the sauna. I mean it’s really bad. I have told management nothing has been done. I’ve had 1 friend leave already and another switching to another gym next month. The only thing they do is remove my review a few times it seems. The Y doesn’t seem like such a safe place anymore. I have videos and it is very strange and unpleasant. You don’t get to be weird and creepy just because you’re handicapped.

Extremely terrible place for summer camp. Their refund policy is simply the worst. What's worse is their response to my inquiry for a refund. When I asked about the cancellation policy, they responded with "no refunds within 2 weeks" but more importantly jumped to the conclusion that my daughter will not be attending the camp by adding "we will notify the administrator that your daughter will not be attending the camp"!
We will make sure that we will attend this camp we paid for, but will never ever...I mean never ever...attend any YMCA camps or events.

My Experience with the Kirkwood YMCA was extremely unplesant. When we signed our daughter up for swim lessons, they informed us there was not enough people taking the class for for them to keep the scheduled class so we could either do private lessons, try the class below or get a refund (keep in mind this was after registration had closed, becomes important later). I chose the option to have her try the class below. The class was over crowded with kids and the level of instruction she was given was minimal at best. I asked them for a refund based on her not enjoying the class an dnot getting anything out of it, mentioning that we had tried a different class and that it was a better fit our daughter and I was told I could not get a refund because the registration deadline had already past. This of course is a lie because I had already been given the option for a refund. This was my first experience with the YMCA and will likely be my last. If you have gotten this far, please look a Foss swim school or Lifetime, both seem to be much better at teaching and customer service.

This location is the most antiquated Y I've ever been to. The facility is falling apart and clearly hasn't been updated since it was built in the 1950s

If you are a woman, do not work out at the Kirkwood YMCA. I do not feel I can work out comfortably because I constantly get stared at (not glances, stares) by other gym members, specifically men. I am not asking to be stared at when I am minding my own business. In the small weight room with no air circulation, I feel more safe in baggy clothing than tight, and even then, “safe” is a stretch, as the harassment does not stop there. You would most likely overheat in baggy clothing and still be stared at. I have voiced my concerns to many staff members, on some occasions in tears, and yet the problems remain. Although I live extremely close to this location, I would rather drive out of my way to another location. Additionally, the lack of gym etiquette is absolutely ridiculous, as the rules are broken every day. I have never encountered such an unprofessional and erratic gym.

First off they never filed the correct paperwork so I had trouble entering other YMCAs. Then they told me it was $72/month for the family (it was $79). Then I called today to cancel my membership because we weren't using it and I was met with hostility and anger. She informed me very rudely that I was required to pay for February as well because I didn't cancel before the 20th of this month. I said no one told me that I was told I could cancel whenever and she said, "I'm telling you now." And proceeded to hang up on me. I will never come back to this YMCA. It's old, crusty, and I heard there's a weird old dude in the sauna. Do not go here. Try Riverchase instead.

Very outdated YMCA.
Child watch hours are limited till 10:30am. It is a small room, at least with windows (YMCA Mid County branch Child Watch room doesn't have any windos- very depressing) and you can see your kid when you walk by on the hallway.
The two people in charge of the Child Watch when I went, was a young guy and a lady with mobility issues due to morbid obesity. He was engaged with the kids in the room (at least was actually watching them). The lady was on her phone when I dropped my kid, when I checked my kid (twice) and when I picked up my kid too. Poor professionalism, I felt bad for the guy, because he practically was by himself working.
If you need Child Watch while you work out, this is not the YMCA to go.
For best Child Watch educated personnel your go to is Carondelet YMCA and River Chase YMCA, they are committed, happy, they change diapers if needed and ok with you, they do activities with the kids, more hours, and I have personally seen how they take care of babies (Carondelet location).
The gym equipment: Small spaces, crowded machines next to each other, no windows, basement equipment with no ventilation, I was concerned about my health in this place.
Classes: Be 15 minutes early for your class. I signed up for Strength Training class and arrived 5 minutes before and the room was completely full. I don't know why they let sign up more people than the classroom can hold.

One of my favorite Y activities is Aquacise, and I love to get a good cardio workout! Laura Garren has been super at keeping us moving at a fast pace, and changing it up to keep us motivated.
Cindy Ricke also gets our hearts pumping for an excellent cardio workout in the Aqua Zumba class!
In the Studio, Genny Schumacher leads a fantastic Silver Sneakers Cardiofit! I always learn something new in her class, and get to push myself in strength and balance in ways I wouldn’t on my own!

Best kept basketball court floors in the area. I wish other Y's maintained their gym floors this well. Staff are courteous and helpful. I do wish that there were more free weights, however there's enough equipment and space for a great workout between all of the rooms and pool.
I've seen guests get frustrated when told that a room closes 15 minutes before the entire facility does. The signage with this info is too small and easily missed. My suggestion is to post BIG signs that communicate such details. Thus, folks can plan their workouts accordingly. Otherwise, it can feel like you're being hurried out without a just reason. Thank you for caring and being great! With some minor tweaks you can offer even greater experiences to guests!!!

I want to address my disappointment with the YMCA administration. I tried to pause my membership due to an illness and they treated me with not empathy, not kindness neither fairness. They are forcing to pay the month when I explained that I will not be able to go due to my illness temporally. I tried to call them for the past three days and everyone told me different answer. Today the front desk person told me there was not solution for it and I have to pay then entire following month with not justification. Now I am ill, paying for a gym which I am not going and losing my money. Definitely not coming back or recommended.

The staff members are rude. I visited as a guest and they would not allow me access to their facility due to my age. I was not happy with the way I was treated. One of the staff members tried to argue with me; she threw me a piece of paper and told me (not asked me) to "sign this" in a rude manner. Will not visit this YMCA again until the staff members learn manners and respect.

Wild that the Kirkwood Y is the worst YMCA in the region, but it is by far. Wayyy out of date facilities and equipments. Classes don’t start on time, rooms are locked when scheduled to be open. At 5am a staff person made me update all my info and picture because the app doesn’t scan my ID anymore. Every other Y locations just takes my name or phone number… rough. Looks like lots of reviews with customer service issues as well.
Hopefully someday Gateway YMCA’s invests in this location and it becomes the resource for the whole community that it should be.

The Wednesday deep water class instructor is AH-mazing. Not only does she lead an excellent workout, she’s knowledgeable about how to modify movements based on ability (secondary to conditions such as mobility restrictions and pain). She always shows up with a positive attitude, great sense of humor, and enviable energy. Of all the aqua fitness instructors I’ve taken classes with, she’s definitely a favorite!!

I called the front desk seeking information about a trainer. I missed the woman’s name whom I spoken too, but I called on Tuesday at 9:20am on 3/14. She was horrible to me right off the jump being so rude. I asked her a question and she literally shouted “oh my god” in annoyance among with other things through out the call. She also continued to use a demeaning tone with me. The conversation was not more then 5 minute long. She was passing my number for a Frank to call me for more information, but I don’t think she ever passed along the message because I never received a call from him. I have never felt so disrespected at a Y before. So disappointing, as Kirkwood has such a great community at the Y.
I hope this reaches someone because I wouldn’t want another person to pass up going to this facility due to the ignorance from the front desk.

Waste of time. I asked with kids in my car being loud if they have open pool. We, myself and 2 kids 5,9 get there they see us come in with towels and swimsuits. They say nothing. Their showers are freezing cold and never warm up turned all the way to hot for minutes. Then we got to the pool door it was locked. A life guard opened the door and said it was not open pool time just lanes. NOT what was said even for an adult let alone a non kid time. I went and spoke with the lady I spoke with on the phone and she BLAMED me for not asking if kids could come (pretty sure but what ever) it wasn’t even open for me technically. Waste of time and bad service. There are plenty of other Ys go there instead.

I go to the kirkwood branch as it’s close to home. It’s not the largest branch but staff members are always friendly and helpful and the childcare is great (they know my kiddos by name) so I prefer this location over others even though other locations have more equipment. They also have group classes that always go on schedule, I love body pump and spinning! I’ve had my membership 3-4 years and don’t plan on ever changing it. The y is family friendly and I prefer it over chain gyms and believe me I tried them all!

My daughter went to swim lessons here for almost 2 months.. about half of the time to water was so cold that she either wanted to get out or stayed as close to me as possible cause she was so cold and this is a kid that loves water!! So for us it was a waste of money and on top of that when I called to cancel they told me that because I’m canceling after the 20th I still have to pay for the next month! I wish someone would’ve told me that when I signed up and I would’ve made sure to cancel at the right time.. now I’m gonna pay $73 for nothing!!

I like to be fit, but would rather socialize. I swore I’d never join another gym because I never go. But the Kirkwood Family YMCA is different! All I have to do is show up! There are great classes happening all the time that fit my schedule. I don’t have to make up my own workout routine or even know much about the class I’m taking. The instructors (and gym members) are knowledgeable, kind and friendly. They answer my silly questions and show me what to do. So all I have to do is show up and ...voila! Staff is so friendly and the classes are diverse and extensive; it's nice that they have childcare offered as well. It's also very affordable for the services you receive. The pool provides much relief for activity in the fall and winter months as they often have 'open swim'. We use the summer camp(s) + the sports programs as well (when the kiddos were younger). We are giving the 'kids night out' which is once a month on Saturday evenings and is available to both members and non-members (as is the camp + sports programs). It is wonderful to have a YMCA in our community. Four stars because they are in need of some aesthetic updates (i.e. locker rooms, common/workout spaces, etc.).

The Kirkwood Y gets five stars from me because it’s wonderful management and staff. The building shows it’s age, however, and some of the equipment suffers from considerable wear and tear. This Y has many members and get lots of use, so more capital investment from the Greater St. Louis YMCA to modernize the facility seems warranted, especially given that the neighboring Webster Groves YMCA was closed a couple of years ago.
