Simple Solutions Fitness is a mirror-free private personal training studio located in Columbia Missouri that doesn’t talk diets or sell supplements.

Do more than just go pick up a dumbbell; at SSF you'll learn about strength training basics, how to create a plan, and how to set up weights in the right order to get sustainable results (and look like you know what you're doing).

Come in with your goals and motivations.
You'll walk out with a starter plan for navigating weights with (a starter amount of) confidence.

Cannot say enough about Steven Mack and the challenge he had when I walked through his doors several years ago. Met me where I was, taught me like I was five and without the shame. Amazing. Would recommend a thousand times in spite of his love for special edition cereals and instant coffee choices.

I highly recommend Steven & his program. You will start to notice results after only a few sessions. Over the years I have joined a multitude of different gyms & workout programs in the area and this has been my favorite one yet - by a landslide. I actually really enjoy going to the sessions. I also love all of the other clients here. He has built an incredibly welcoming, encouraging and fun community! Steven will also work with you at any level, so don’t be afraid to join. Needing a lot of work myself, trust me, I know it can be intimidating to join a gym, but just do it, you will NOT regret it.

For many years, I primarily ran long distances and did very little strength training. Coming to Simple Solutions helped me realize my need for strength training to support my running (to prevent injury and run faster) and support my everyday activities, especially as I age. Just having a routine and being held accountable to it has been worth the cost. The coaching and camaraderie is a great bonus. The only caveats to know is that the equipment is a little limited (dumbbells only go up to 50 pounds), and the prescribed workouts can feel redundant. However, the team will work with you to help spice up your workouts if you need to. Overall, I highly recommend giving this place a try!

This setup is just what I needed to push myself to the next level. I have always been active, but never had much of a strength training focus (I just never knew where to start!) I felt like working out at home I was in a rut because I never knew when or how to increase and weights or reps, didn’t have the right equipment, etc. Rusty and Steven have both helped me feel way more confident in my ability to maneuver around the gym while also helping me increase my strength. As an endurance runner, I knew I needed to improve my strength, mobility, and balance, but I had no idea how to go about doing it. Steven took the time to listen to my goals and what matters most to me. The small group structure (2-4 other people) is awesome! You get individual attention, while also having the support of others. It’s a fun, friendly, and no-judgement atmosphere. Steven and Rusty are going to push you to do your best, without going beyond your limitations. I needed to have some modifications due to an injury I sustained outside the gym, and they were creative and helpful in modifying exercises so I could still attain my goals without harming myself further. Great communication from Steven all around. He kindly followed up after my first few sessions to see how I was feeling. He checked in quite a bit too. Sessions are in a fairly personal setting allowing for conversation, questions, and feedback. The workouts are preplanned on an app that you follow and track. The trainers here are super knowledgeable and personable. Their backgrounds includes strength coaches and physical therapy so its really helpful towards your fitness and health goals.

There is a set routine and workout regiment that you can set sessions for usually a couple times a week. The training sessions are small groups, no more than five people and everyone I've worked out with has been fun, welcoming, and helpful. I think this helps a lot as it doesn't seem too bad when others are also trying to work through it as well. There are multiple session times in the early morning and in the afternoon through evening Monday through Friday. Saturday morning sessions are available as well.

Its a great gym if you want hands on instruction with helpful instructors; easygoing people to work out with; and a non-intimidating environment to meet your health and fitness goals.

Simple Solutions is a great alternative to other public or private gyms if you want a semi-personal experience and feedback from great trainers. I had a great experience and learned a lot.
After trying out this style of training I will not be returning but purely because I find it easier to go to public gyms as I appreciate the social aspect of it more. I started working out at Simple Solutions with Steven a little over 6 months ago. I wanted to get in the gym but didn’t know where to begin. Big gyms are intimidating! Simple solutions class sizes are small, welcoming, and non judgmental.
That first week was rough (bear claws) but I keep showing up. You soon learn with all of Steven’s knowledge and motivation that you can and will gain strength and see changes. I have been working with Steven for about a year and a half now. I started because I was lost when it came to working out and was too intimidated with bigger gyms in town. I didn't know what to expect when I started as I hadn't lifted weights like this before but Steven eases you into everything, and never makes you do something you aren't comfortable with. I was scared to do band assisted pull ups at first, but overtime built up to them and now enjoy them! My fave is barbell back squats!

I enjoy the small group atmosphere and the vibe of the gym. It's an inclusive space and I enjoy chatting with the other members as well! Steven is also like a walking encyclopedia. You can ask him a question and he will have an answer, and tell exactly what book or YouTube video to check out to learn more.

Coach Mack has really helped me become stronger these last 11 months ! I barely could do one elevated push up when we first started and now I can easily do them as a warm up. He is very knowledgeable and has introduced me to new exercises. I appreciated that he chose exercises for me that does not aggravate my low back ( as I deal with a low back condition). I have gone up in rep strength in many exercises and visually I can see I am leaner and added muscle . The only issue I had with online training was i was limited with exercise choices so maybe having an option for different exercises for the muscle group. Also , on some days , the warm up of the day for the exercise session would be missing . Overall , I enjoyed my experience and would train with him in the future .

Before my trial period with Simple Solutions Fitness started, I was not nearly as active and had some difficulties with balance. I was moderately intimidated by weight lifting as well. Over the past month, I have had a boost in energy, motivation, and my balance has improved. I've been working with coach Steven Mack for several months now. When I started with Steven I was frustrated with my training. I felt like my training was aimless and I lacked goals and a plan. Steven really listened to me and helped me set some goals I'm really excited to be working towards. The training is challenging but fun and I have been making steady progress.

I'm so happy that Steven challenged me to work towards some goals that I had always been scared about, for example, pull-ups and bench press. It's so rewarding to see progress from week to week. Steven is so great about listening to my concerns, he answers all my questions and his feedback is always on point.

In addition to making steady progress in my training, as well as learning a lot about the principles of strength training (one of the things I really wanted from coaching), another thing I'm really happy about is that Steven's programming is allowing me to understand progress in terms other than scale weight. But especially noteworthy were his cultural sensitivity and accommodation of that ( I required a female trainer) as well as his flexibility in terms of the options he offered.He was also easy to access in times of need.

Unfortunately my female trainer departed and I was no longer able to continue at which time Steven offered to assis me with finding a different trainer. This was above and beyond.

I shall miss training here and was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional ethics of the owner. This is not a common trait for many of us.

I won the opportunity to try SSF this July. Their set up is really cool: with just a few people in session at a time, there is a level of community and support that is easily built over just a few sessions. While there is a feeling of privacy, you still have a trainer right there to give guidance, feedback and keep you working in a safe way towards maximizing improvement. They use an app to help you through each session, which gives a sense of guided independence, and makes each hour tailored to you, while still doing the same moves as the others in the group. This also allows you each to go at your own pace throughout, and gives the trainers freedom to “wander,” providing individual feedback. The app also keeps track of your performance for you, so you can easily see at a glance your improvement in weight and reps, where you are in the current workout, which move you’re on (including a video of how to do it in case you’ve forgotten), how many sets you’ve done and have left, and what’s next up. I haven’t done this kind of training before, and it was pretty awesome! If we didn’t have so many extracurriculars this year, I’d likely continue. I don’t know what the normal cost for training is at most gyms, but I did price check one, and SSF’s prices are equivalent to one of the large gyms in Columbia.

Steven creates a welcoming environment. The small-group setting is nice. It’s kind of like working out with friends but still getting personal attention.
Steven knows a lot about the mechanics of the exercises and about exercise theory. I enjoyed learning more about these topics.
The app-assisted exercises help you track your progress. The classes are pretty laid back. You get a good workout but never feel any pressure. It was a good experience overall.
The latest class is at 5, so this is a good option for someone looking for a morning - to early evening training.

Steven has been coaching me remotely for almost two months. In that time, thanks to his deep and vast knowledge of exercise science, I have steadily increased my weights and gained strength and confidence.

I knew I was looking for a more personalized experience where I could learn the movements and techniques. Coaches Steven and Maggie both give excellent instruction on new exercises. For example, I have been doing body weight exercise classes for a few years but recently realized that my body needed a change in order to see a difference. I waited until my 16ish weeks were finished at Simple Solutions to write this because I wanted to provide as much information as I could. When I started with SS I was looking for someone to keep me accountable, push me to do things I didn't want to do, and to teach me knew things. All of that was accomplished with SS.

I started Simple Solutions Fitness after getting a diagnoses of spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), spondylosis (spinal stress fractures), and spondylolisthesis (a breakage of parts of the spine vertebrae slips out of place), and degenerative disc disease. Whew!

After finishing PT, I wanted to find some place where I could get stronger and take better care of myself. I am intimidated by most gyms and so I would always quit after 1-2 months. Here I enjoy working out, it's fun, it's not painful but it's always challenging me to get better, stronger, each time I go. Now I have already had my "6th month anniversary" and am on month 7, going consecutively and only missing once!! I'm so proud and happy about that.

Steven was great in that if I felt pain doing any exercises, he has an amazing ability to immediately give me an alternative exercise that works those muscles to make me stronger without pain. He didn't doubt me or look down on me about that, EVER!

The small group atmosphere feels so safe, fun, warm, and you feel like you can be just a 'normal' going in and chatting while working out, never feeling judged and leave proud about what you accomplished. Everyone I've ever met has been so nice and fun and pleasant. I feel like I have my "workout buddies" when I go there now. :)

I also like how the plans are tailor fit for you each time. I never knew until recently that Steven spends several hours working on our plans, tailor fit just for us. That's pretty amazing. No wonder why the plans work so well for me and I do different movements than others! (He makes them so it works around my back issues....it's great!)

My back has become stronger, I'm in less pain, I can lift more without hurting myself, get off the ground faster, and just overall keep feeling stronger.

If you've got pain or don't know what to do in a gym but want to feel stronger, or gyms make you feel uncomfortable, Steven is great - you'll be really glad you went!!

He was able to get my strength back to where it was in high school incredibly fast. He constantly pushes me to do more weight even when I feel like I can’t do anymore, and I end up surprising myself. With very reasonable prices, he has completely transformed my soft muscles into clear definition and I feel more confident. I signed up for a three month trial run, and saw improvement within a month of going twice a week. He is very educated and is able to help me in all aspects of health and fitness including diet and a better mental state. Couldn’t ask for a better trainer!

I appreciated my time working with Steven. I appreciated his coaching style, but most importantly, his attitude, personality and dedication to his craft. He never stopped learning. He was always reading and studying about the latest in nutrition, health, and exercise, and he readily shared his knowledge and information with his clients. He not only cared about their physical outer appearance, he wanted to make sure they were healthy in mind, body and spirit, and he did so with regular check-ins, nutrition plans, recommendations for outside services, and suggestions for additional services.
