Why does the menβs steam room have to be the most disgusting place on the planet?!? Can someone please enforce rules of any kind. People need to be wearing swimwear when using the steam room. The newly βrenovatedβ menβs shower does not have functioning soap dispensers but does have a strong smell of sewer gas. Once again the lifeguard βslept inβ so everyone who wanted to swim this morning was turned away. Pool is never operating as it says on the schedule. Consistently watch ymca staff kick people out of swimming lanes at incorrect times. Make sure to lock up your valuables because there will be dozens of unsupervised children running around the locker room after they leave the schools nearby. Donβt expect any help from the front desk staff except in the early morning. The evening staff are typically rude and lazy so just avoid if possible.

it's a fine gym. this is less of the facility's problem and more of a general people one, but there are teenagers who have zero awareness of the space around them, or basic ettiquite like not sitting on a machine on their phones or talking to their friends for 20 minutes. I've been going here for years and I think the membership has outgrown this location which is great for the Y I guess but I'd look elsewhere if youre looking for efficiency and quality equipment. Getting tired of teachable moments and 14 year olds making TikToks of unsafely benching.

Came on a weekend with a trial membership so my son could work on his basketball skills. Was told they did not have a key to the storage room where the balls are kept and they don't have any at the desk. No balls and no key to the storage seems a bit ridiculous. The desk staff are okay but unfriendly and inattentive as unfortunately is per usual with most YMCA's. Glad we took the trial before committing.

Why has it become impossible to access the schedule to sign up for classes on a desktop? I did fall into it Saturday morning, but haven't found the key to doing it today. Why has this "new and improved" sign up system locked us out?

I attend this location for swimming lessons. Itβs a great facility but the showers are disgusting. Please sanitize the showers. I shower after every swimming lesson and seeing this for past month is unacceptable, and itβs every shower. Please clean.

I'll give it 2 stars because there was definitely a lot of people up there that looked like they were having fun. They have a nice indoor pool with a water slide that looked fun and a nice amount of cardio equipment in the gym. I went up there to lift weights though and I was super disappointed. They have one dust covered weight bench with a few small free weights but it is a complete dud for lifting. The dude behind the counter was the worst experience tho. He was less than unhelpful and easily can be called rude, short, and completely unhelpful. I was disappointed with the equipment but was still planning on signing up me and the kids so I had some questions about what a membership includes and he didn't answer one single question I had satisfactory. I ended up walking out without signing up for anything and I'll never go back. Not to this specific one at least. Maybe the YMCA has some worthwhile things worth joining but I wouldn't know considering the abysmal service or lack there of that I received. For a soccer moms with kids it might be beneficial but for the bros or chicks who want to lift don't waste your time and gas going here you won't find anything but disappointment, frustration, and probably a little anger. πͺπ»πͺπΏπͺπ½π―Good luck

Morning staff and pool staff are great! Shout out to Chip, Sandra and Anton!
The walking track is horrible for the body...hard cement. The gym on Sunday reeks of weed. The dudes own it with their music and cussing. After school teens are unsupervised. I witnessed one kid get bullied to the ground in tears. I addressed gym issues with staff who dismissed it and said they can't do anything about it. Overall could be cleaner and machines are broken for a long period of time. I enjoy the pool but it's annoying when I get bumped for swim lessons. I was told they take priority. I've asked when lessons take place so I can coordinate my schedule but nobody seems to know. Please offer more water aerobics for a younger crowd.

The South City YMCA is a nice facility. The staff is friendly and the facility is clean. There are many machines for working out. They have both weight machines and free weights. There are about three studios for group exercise, or spinning.
They offer a wide variety of courses, and you have to sign up on your app. You cannot sign up for an entire series; but each individual session. until 24 hours in advance, so it doesnβt allow to plan ahead for long-term. It has a gym with one main basketball court and the running track requires 19 laps to complete a full mile. It has a swimming pool with a few lanes and an area for wading or walking or water aerobics. I do appreciate they provide a variety of locker options, including ones where you customize the combination, so you donβt need to bring a lock. There is a sauna and a steam room.
Iβd give it a five if it had more basketball courts, a larger walking track also more monitors you can see or hear. Most of the monitors on the machines donβt work, so bring your own entertainment.

I view the 1-5 stars like A,B,C,D,F. C being well, ok, but not great. So Here's what's great - the floor staff, instructors and front desk are all great! Friendly, helpful, do their job well. They get 10/10. The equipment is pretty good, things that break get repaired within a normal amount of time. I've been going here for a year now and really like it.
What's not so great - I guess it's back of house staff? I made a larger purchase to do some training sessions. I was really excited, I have never had a personal trainer. I put money aside for it. It was part of my new years resolution. Whoever is supposed to coordinate the trainers just isn't cutting it. I emailed several times to get it set up, called into the Y and someone forwarded my message. Then I called again because I still did not hear back and got forwarded onto some one from Jose Estates who "may or may not call me back" according to their voicemail. The lack of communication when a large purchase has been made - merrrrr. I am just not down with that. After I left a voicemail saying I wanted a refund, I received a call back almost immediately to process a refund - that was A+.
It is a bummer though. I really wanted to get a personal trainer, so I am going to end up switching gyms because of this.

PLEASE READ ITS VERY IMPORTANT. Very bad experience with an employee! I had an incident with an employee (youth sports manager) they were being very hostile over text due to personal issues and kept INSISTING I pull up here to fight them while they were on the clock. Someone who is in charge of youth sports SHOULD not being telling people to pull up to their job to fight them. Very inappropriate and unprofessional, be cautious with who you let around your children. This person is not the best around kids and tends to have a foul mouth while children are present. I have called to this location twice to report this and have heard nothing back, Iβm very disappointed for a company thatβs supposed to be family oriented.

$50 a month for an individual membership at a gym that is subsidized by my tax dollars. Receiving Billions in government assistance/grants, this tax exempt nonprofit is TWICE the cost of the gym membership at a traditional gym that has far more space, training equipment, a theater, and more group classes. Iβm not providing my paystubs and W2 to the YMCA in order to not pay $50 a month for a government subsidized gym membership my tax dollars recurrently fund, for a gym with 1 flat bench, and 1 working stair stepper. Iβve called management multiple times to discuss and they are always βin a meetingβ. Iβve left messages to receive a call back, and still no returned call after weeks. This is blatant abuse of government fund assistance, and nonprofit tax exempt status. My payment of $50.00 A MONTH and taxes finding government grants that are subsidizing this organization are just going to line the pockets of executive leadership. This is abuse of government incentives, and abuse financially to the people who live near by and want an affordable gym to attend. These for-profit gyms not getting these government incentives who cost less for an individual adult membership, are having to compete with this gov assisted gym that is charging 2x more per month, and getting BILLIONS in government funding. This truly feels illegal and curious what government officials think this is appropriate. Guess the only option is to write my government rep whoβs send these billion dollar checks to the YMCAβs CEOs personal bank account.

The facility is fairly clean. The weight room area is untidy and disorganized. The clients don't pick up after themselves, and the staff seem oblivious to the mess. Every day, I pick up weights and equipment strewn over the gym floor.
The staff allow clients to work out barefoot or in flip flops/sandals. The staff do not engage or correct improper use of equipment. After several complaints, I was told by staff members that they allow members to work out barefoot because the signage says "should" not must wear appropriate gym attire and/or foot wear.
A little more staff engagement in enforcing rules and making periodical rounds could lead to a safer, cleaner, and neater gym.
I remain a customer because it is a non-profit, and it is within walking distance from my home.

My family has a YMCA membership. Today,12/27/24 at 2:09pm CST, my son called the South City YMCA to ask whether the gym was open. The young lady who answered the phone was VERY rude. He asked if the gym was open. Her first response was there are no basketball games and as long as you have a membership you can use the gym. I instructed him ask how long the Y would be open today. She then proceeded to ask, "is this a kid"? His response was yes. Then he asked again how long would the Y be open. She then proceeded to explain to him that next time he needs to have a parent contact the Y. Since I "the parent" am listening I spoke into the phone and explained his parent is listening. I also explained that I am trying to teach my son how to reach out and ask questions when he wants information. She then proceeded to try to talk over me and state it is easier to talk to adults than children. I explained, "No it's not and he was clear in his questions" I also stated I didn't appreciate her comments and as customers of the Y, anyone can contact to ask questions. If this young lady is going to continue to answer phones at the YMCA, she needs to answer the questions asked (regardless of the type of customer) and keep her comments to herself. This Y needs to teach their employees better customer service if they want to continue keeping satisfied customers.

I went in yesterday to ask exactly what membership includes. The website says discounts on childcare, discounts on classes, group outings for seniors, etc. On the main page it says group classes included, which i didn'tthink was the case. I know there is a pool and weights. I wanted to compare the benefits of joining the Y versus a gym. I told the front desk I wanted to know about membership and she cut me off before I could finish and said "I just need your ID". When I explained i wanted to know what membership included specifically she said "everything but the classes". I asked what everything is and she waved her hand around the area and said "everything you see here". I said "I don't think you understand what i am asking, I want to know specifically what membership includes". She laughed at me, got loud and said "thats what I'm telling you!" One other person at the desk was watching and when she got loud someone came out of the back office and stood back and watched. I tried again and said" I'm not sure where the miscommunication is but can you tell me exactly what a membership includes?" She laughed again and said loudly " I don't know what you want me to tell you". My son was with me and was shocked as well. I turned around and started towards the door. She was yelling after me something about " I'm telling you what is in the membership!" Outside, my son told me he knows there is also a track and a gym. He suggested I go to another location. I'm not driving out of my way to another location when this one us on my way home. I emailed the contact on the web page and haven't heard back and I doubt I will. Needles to say, I'm very disappointed and won't be joining the Y.

Locker room never very clean, hallway to pool was cleaned recently but apparently they don't do it on a regular basis, hair balls and a cricket have taken up permanent residence, staff rarely post messages about pool closing and if they do, no one tells people answering the phone. This is important because a lot of us call senior ride and have to schedule getting there but staff does not seem to be concerned about that . Carondelt is much better

I have been a member for about three months, but I just went in and cancelled. Equipment is constantly breaking, the facility is not clean (especially the locker rooms), and the staff never intervene when things go wrong. A few weeks back some kids were yelling and cursing in the weight room. When a few of us complained they did nothing.
Then to top it off, they just changed the guest policy. We used to get three guest passes per calendar year. Now you only get one and they don't allow for people to buy a day pass. When I emailed to ask about this policy change no one ever replied.
Long story short: for $50 per month, you can get a much better experience at any other gym in town. Don't waste your time or money with the Y.
EDIT: Someone called and emailed me back asking why I cancelled. They argued with me that the new guest policy "adds value for our members." Sorry, but taking away amenities doesn't add value.

This gym could be great if a few major problems were resolved. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
Problem 1 - everything is breaking and takes a long time to be repaired or replaced. At least 4 machines I used consistently have broken in the past 3 months.
Problem 2 - high school kids use it as a playground w no supervision everyday after school from 3-5. If youβre okay with screaming, cussing, kids wrestling and leaving their stuff all over the gym + not wiping down anything they use, then itβs no biggie. They treat the equipment horribly as well which likely contributes to Problem #1. I know thereβs been many complaints but nothing has changed.

Joined this location 2 years ago specifically for the water exercise and strength training classes. At first I had no problems getting into classes. About 6 months ago that changed dramatically and now getting into a class is like the Hunger Games. All the classes are full within minutes of open enrollment in the app. If you are in the 9am Wednesday class and the Friday slot opens at 9, by the time youβre out of the class at 10 the Friday session is already full. βUpdateβ I literally just watched the strength training class for Tuesday morning fill up within 5 minutes at midnight on Monday AM right before my eyes. It was available at 12:00 and by 12:05 it was full. β- Itβs impossible to work out on any kind of weekly schedule using the classes. This is infuriating and means Iβm basically just giving them membership dues each month and getting zero in return. Have had at least 2 rate increases in this time so Iβm paying about 30% more now than when I joined. Now the cost per year is as much or more than being a non-resident member at The Heights. Also, I will agree with another review that the locker room and showers are absolutely not clean enough. Especially the shower area, I saw so many women walking through there in bare feet just asking for an infection or spreading one, yuck. The pool certainly smells heavily chlorinated but the water is always a bit cloudy which is unsettling. On the plus side, the rest of the facility is light and bright, and the staff have all been super friendly with exception of one very surly older female lifeguard who was regularly super rude to our instructor and members of the water class.

I truly enjoy the ymca and this location in particular. There is a strong sense of community here. My frustration is not getting into the classes. Body pump will fill up 5 minutes after opening. I am usually at work during this time making it difficult to sign up on time. This issue is not specific to this location and I would be happy to use the old weights if there was more space. It feels great to get into a routine and wish it was not difficult to get into the class. The y, especially South City, has high quality classes and is really a great place to be.

Writing a review very specifically for the pool, which I used to really enjoy...however, over the past six months or so, any time I go during the day adult swimmers are getting kicked out of lanes to make room for children's swim lessons. This happens even when swim lessons aren't posted on the schedule (I check it every day before I go...I never go when lessons are scheduled specifically to avoid dealing with this). Last time I went a class of about 30 small children were left alone on the edge of the pool while their instructor gathered equipment. I had to ask them to move back more than once because they were crowding the edge, sticking their feet in the water while I was trying to swim laps. When the instructor eventually told me I needed to give up my lane, I asked him why swim lessons weren't on the schedule, and he told me that if I didn't like it I could complain to management. I went back to the locker room to change, and while leaving the showers I encountered a woman (!!) supervising a group of young boys in the men's locker room. Not the first time this has happened either. I don't like to complain or leave bad reviews, but I felt really uncomfortable and unwelcome with these situations. I took the swim instructor's suggestion and sent an email to management through the website, but never received a response. Guess it's time to find a new gym.

In general I like this YMCA due to its variety of equipment, large number of cardio machines, and central location. But if youβre considering joining, be aware that the facility has major issues almost constantly. Whether itβs the pool, sauna, steam room, showers, hot water, elevator, etc, something is out of order almost every day. So youβre never actually getting all the amenities youβre paying for.

This place is nice but the staff skips cleaning the locker rooms & the dark floors show all the dust, trash & hair. The shower area isnβt cleaned throughout the week. I purposely have left an empty bottle of water a bandaid opened but unused in the shower area and each item was there for more than two weeks on separate occasions. The body wash is usually never filled. A hot tub would really help make this place a one stop shop along with a staff that does more than just sits up front looking at their computer screens waiting for time to pass & claiming they are understaffed and not able to clean the locker room or fill the soap. 3 people at the front is one too many not wanting to clean but just sit there.
Update itβs 3 months later and it was good for a month and some change and the last two months are going back to things being ignored not missed but ignored. The floors are disgusting it was brought to the attention of the front desk lady susie I believe was her name this morning, she got on her walkie talkie and made the morning cleaner aware of the dust and bandages under the benches and someone appeared to have a accident in the shower area. I came back later tonight to specifically see for myself if the locker was cleaned and it was not so I spent 30 mins doing it for you guys. The cleaning lady with the pink hair does great in the lobby canβt she not run that wet mob through the guys locker room after you guys close. Fill the body wash, fill the hand towel dispenser!!!! Clean behind the toilets every night !!! With hosing it down , pick up the garbage from the drains Or have that be the first thing done in the morning!!!! This is unacceptable and really makes me feel like if these small things arenβt clean then whatβs not being cleaned that the naked eye canβt see !!!

MAJOR GYM DOWNGRADE: management βupgradedβ equipment at the gym and in doing so removed 2 of 3 neutral bench press set ups and 5 of 8 benches for free weightsβ¦ they got rid of the back extension machine for no apparent reason. The management likely didnβt consult members or monitor use of the facilities before making the changes. Before there was rarely a wait for equipment, now thereβs always one. Bring back at least 1 of the neutral bench press set ups and 2-3 more benches and it should help someβ¦ get rid of the extra pull up assist (itβs rarely used and definitely not enough to justify 2) and bring back the back extension.

I have been going to the South City Y for Rochelle's arthortis swim class since May 2022. I was introduced to the class by a friend. 2023 i had two knee replacements and was told that by doing this class my recover was faster than most people. Not only does she teach the class but stays in touch and encourges her students when the are out for any reason. When teaching Rochelle makes sure you are doing it the right way and tells you why your doing it. She also explains how to do it on land so you can exercise when at home.

Nice facility, large range of gym equipment and kept up well. Lots of good classes included in the membership - also one of the only places you can find instruction in Chen and Hunyuan tai chi in the metro area. Locker rooms are nice - there's a steam room, plenty of sink space, etc. There are open showers (a plus) and they're cleaned enough, but they smell dingy - i think the drains need to be cleaned more often?
Would be four stars but I was told by staff that people aren't allowed to use the rec rooms with mirrors when when there's no classes in them for whatever reason - probably insurance or something. I wanted to use the space to practice tai chi and dancing. Anyways, it feels weird to tell members they can't be trusted to be in an empty room in a fitness facility.

Giving a bad review because the website is awful. Impossible to change my password because every time I request a change password email, I don't receive anything, even in my spam folder. Have attempted multiple times. Have even asked for the front desk workers to send me an email twice and still haven't gotten anything. My only reason for signing up for this gym was for the classes and I've still not been able to attend any because of this technical issue. I'll change my review once this issue is fixed but it's pretty ridiculous how bad and dated the website is.
Thank you for the reply but I still have not gotten an email.

Great skatepark, almost never open. Called and was told the park would be open 11-1. Showed up at 11:30 filled out the safety paperwork, paid my $5. As soon as I got in the park (about 11:50) they said they were closing at 12. At least I got my $5 back. Would be great if they had a set schedule but youβre pretty much at the mercy of the volunteer.

I typically bounce between the south city and chesterfield locations. The South City Y is comparable in size and quality. My only complaint is the water temperature in the pool. It's too hot for lap swimming. Feels kind of gross...I guess it's a good temperature for small children.

The South City YMCA is great! Here are some pros and cons (I think pros outweighs cons)-
Pros: It has a pool, steam room, free weights, weight machines, basketball courts, billiards/ping pong, and fitness classes. It's just $31/month for a single adult, with no minimum contract lengths (i.e. month-to-month) and no gym improvement or other random fees. The staff is friendly and professional, and the workout areas are really clean.
Cons: The weekend hours are limited (only open til 5 pm). The men's locker room is randomly closed from 2-3 daily due to staffing shortages/cleaning. The price is a bit higher than somewhere like Planet Fitness. There are only two squat racks. It can be a bit crowded during peak hours. The equipment is a bit old.

A clean gym with friendly staff that has been my regular 3x/wk spot for a while now. One star short of five only because the TVs in the weight area are always showing politics on at least one. Would rather have it be all sports or I don't know..subtitled re-runs of The Office?

Everyone is always friendly and we SO appreciate the childcare option (and so does our 2 year old!) All spaces are clean and big enough that there are always machines available. Love the pool (currently doing swimming lessons) and could go on and on. So thankful for having this place just a 1 min drive from our house β₯οΈ

This is a really nice facility. There are plenty of work out options - machines, free weights and floor exercises. If you want to make new friends - you have that opportunity. But if you just want to work out - come and go, you can do that just as easily. I enjoy the atmosphere and family friendly environment. Give it a try!

The South City YMCA provides more than just a work out. It is a place to feel connected and celebrate healthy living with others. I have especially enjoyed the group exercise classes. I go for the work out, but I return for the camaraderie of the other members and the fun personalities of the instructors.

I've been a member here for, well, quite a few years. Even through Covid, this team has maintained a good attitude and, for the most part, been consistent in communicating their Covid policies. Equipment maintenance has been surprisingly good, with few machines out of commission. The staff is always really friendly and helpful, and the locker room is clean - even thought they've been down a male attendant for quite a while, requiring them to close the men's locker room from 2-3 p.m. every day (which maybe could be changed to after hours?)
Overall, I've been at three different Y locations over the last 20+ years. This one's my favorite by far.

AARON and LINDA REYNOLDS are the most rudest, bitter and grumpest old women that I have ever encountered out the ymca. On 1/2/2022 my cousin and I visited the south city branch because we were interested in becoming a member. We decided to use the guest pass. When we walked to front desk Aaron yells put a mask on which we understood because of covid. She then yells pull it over your nose now and stand over there extremely loud as we were her grandchildren. She then said that there was no such thing as guest pass when I clearly had the email. I then ask the nice African American man that witness and was sitting at the next desk about swimming lessons because I didn't like Aaron attitude. HE STATED THAT AARON HAD MORE KNOWLEDGE. SHE THEN JOINED THE CONVERSATION AND SAID SINCE I HAVE ATTITUDE YOU CAN GET THAT INFORMATION ON LINE. THEN LINDA JOINS THE CONVERSATION AND SAID HOW IS SHE RUDE FOR DEMANDING YOU STAND SOMEWHERE. I THEN ASK FOR THERE NAMES TO TELL MANAGERS. LINDA YELLS YOU WANT ME TO SPELL MY LAST NAME VERY RUDE. AND AARON REFUSED TO GIVE HER LAST NAME BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO. ITS A SHAME THAT THE YMCA HAVE BITTER WOMEN THAT IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL BECAUSE THEY WOKE UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED AND THAT THEY ARE ALREADY STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF BED. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND I FEEL THAT ME AND MY COUSIN SHOULD GET IN APOLOGY

This is hands down the best YMCA my family has ever gone to! I finally remembered to leave my review. The customer service from the staff was absolutely phenomenal. We were visiting from out of state with plans of relocating and wanted to check out a YMCA. First, we went to the location near Page and after interacting with the staff there I never wanted to even consider a membership at any YMCA. I decided to google another location to give it another shot and I'm so thankful I did! South City YMCA was a night and day experience. Everything was clean and in order. Everyone was pleasant and I've never been to a Y that was this large. The people alone at this location changed my mind completely and we will definitely begin a membership once we officially make the move. Thank you!
