I love to support climbing! Went here with friends who have never climbed and it was enjoyable with fair prices, nice staff, and good vibes.
This gym is unfortunately not for casuals. As a current route setter for 8 years I tend to be a bit criticalβ¦ This gym is board line inaccessible for newbies. Very little 5.9s and under, very little problems under V3 and 2 autobelaysβ¦.
More of a bouldering facility as a lot of the top routes look like they have been up awhile. Def a gym that needs some love but the bouldering was decent!

Great climbing gym with kind knowledge staff. They have a large selection of boulder problems as well as lead and top rope for all ages and levels. In addition they have a nice gym area and offer various classes. Check this place out!

Freestone is my home away from home! Great setters, great boulders, great routes and an excellent staff. Climbers are fortunate to have a gym like Freestone. And now the renovation for the new boulder area is finished to host a huge competition! Soon there will be a new addition to rope climbing that previously was a small boulder area. My favorite thing about Freestone is that it's the home ground for the western Montana climbing community!

Variety of bouldering, sport, top rope and autobelay climbing routes with a gym area too. The expanded bouldering area is sweet. The yoga classes are also wonderful. I like the early morning one on Tuesday the best, I wish they had more early morning classes! The 10 punch pass is a good deal if you're not ready for a membership. The atmosphere could be a little more welcoming to beginners, but if you're looking for a community of skilled climbers in Missoula, this is where they'll be.
I'm using the gym area for rehab after ACL surgery. They have a combined leg extension/hamstring curl machine and stationary bikes which are great. The leg press machine is one of the upside down ones so I had to get more strength back before using it.

I've been going to this gym off and on for many years and love it. I appreciate all the improvements & upgrades they've made over time. Recently I had some questions about my account, and their customer service was excellent in getting answers back to me!

Rope climbing area is small, and routes are overly-skewed for very experienced climbers, making it really tough for beginner or intermediate climbers to enjoy, and even tougher for any beginner who might want to get into the sport (which seems like an obvious issue for a business which presumably would benefit from acquiring new customers).

Disappointed in Freestone Climbing today. I filled out the waivers an hour before we arrived but the young girl at the front desk struggled to find them. She was not helpful and didn't want to wait on us. We were in the middle of paying and trying to get the gear for my kiddos and she wanted to stop and help 3 adults who were in line behind us. My husband said no, can't you finish checking us in? She did reluctantly. When I asked for the harnesses so the kids could do the the auto belay wall, she said there was not a counselor to spot the kids. It was all so confusing. Finally a man walked up that worked there and knew we wanted the auto belay. Just bad customer service. Workers would rather be on their phones than help people out. Also, they didn't really have any climbing walls this time for kiddos. All in all a bad experience this time. So disappointing as my kids had a great time last year when we came.

The staff was really cool. They are incredibly knowledgable and helpful. However, the grading was for skilled climbers only. The easiest grade being a 5.8 which made it rough to take someone who had never gone climbing. There were one or two boulders that were easy enough but even the auto belays were extremely challenging for a new climber. The staff was really sympathetic towards it and did everything they could to help. There boulders were really fun. All the routes in the gym were set up incredibly well. I just would beg to have them set something that would make it enjoyable for a new climber.
I look forward to going again.

The place is much bigger than the pictures on Google suggest. Full top rope and sport corral with 2 long bouldering walls, and another 2 bouldering walls in the main room, where the roped climbing is. Along with a small gym. Great gym with some steep grading. Highly recommend

Great , changing my review from 5 to 4 stars after being there for a year. They mandate close toed shoes in the weight room. Most lifters prefer no shoes on deadlifts and squats to help prevent injuries. Also there should be a higher amount a routes for beginners V0-2. The gym is not approachable to take a friend or parent to learn the movements and just have a good time. Good route setting, Friendly staff, clean, just geared towards high end climbers, not the full range of people interested learning about climbing.

Was absolutely excellent! My kids and I had a blast. Remember to take some extra time to get there a bit early if you have kids to get certified to belay on the auto belay and standard belay. I recommend coming a day or so in advance so that your experience is smooth.

I canβt really speak to the service from staff, but the facility itself is great. We visited from out of town for a climbing competition. Had never been here before and it exceeded my expectations. I have been gym climbing for the past year and have been in many rock climbing gyms in different states. If I had to describe this place it would be inaccessible and uncomfortable. I took a break from climbing for two months and came here with some friends. The gym was hard to find and there was very little signage. Routes were weirdly labeled and almost none were accessible to beginner climbers and those getting back into the sport. While staff was kind, we felt glared and stared at the entire time. Music and rooms had a weird silent quality that also made us uncomfortable. This may have just been our standalone experience, but we left weirded out and semi-disappointed.

Came to missoula on a little weekend getaway and decided to check out Freestone with my two-year-old. I wish I caught the name of the employee at the front counter to praise them because of how wonderful, inviting, and understanding they were! My son had a blast and I climbed my first 5.11 so we both left super stoked and exhausted. Next time we're in Missoula, we will definitely be returning! Thank you!

Our son has struggled finding a sport that he is passionate about, mind you heβs only turning 6 in March but none the less it has been hard for him. We just want him to be happy, build some strength and get out there. We discovered very recently that he loves to climb, and heβs excited about it! My husband and I couldnβt wait to find him a local place where he can explore this uncharted territory. Unfortunately we came to Freestone. Your employees did the bare minimum to help him, teach him, or god for bid, show some emotion about us being there. Weβre an extremely easy going family and being in hospitality for over a decade I know we all have bad days, but this was a global vibe.We were digging for any semblance of direction, possible βtricks of the tradeβ or at the very least, info on birthday parties, clubs, or camps. We were unsuccessful in all endeavors.
To whom this may concern, your staff needs a hype man, a pep rally, or to be equipped with, or a place they can turn to, for info for moms like myself who are willing, ready and pleased to spend our hard earned money in your establishment on our children. I hope you make a change bc weβd love to be apart of a community of climbers that our kids can look up to, learn from, and inspire βTo finish their cereal, and go outside.β

I bought a birthday gift card for my son over the phone. Jacob went out of his way to be very helpful and I was happy he was familiar with my son and that he made sure my son received the gift. I'm not a climber but my son climbs here a couple times a week and he loves it. If you are looking for a place to climb in Missoula you found it here.

Wonderful facility for a town this size, and they are expanding! Lots more sending to come. The staff is always friendly and down to earth and the bathrooms are always clean. I would love to see a space to sit and chill where I can read in between climbs. Space is a little tight and nights can be super busy. but that just means they are thriving so I really canβt complain.

Not for beginners, like almost at all. If you're new to the sport it's very hard to find stuff to climb at your level. Definitely tailored toward more experienced climbers. Would like to see more routes in the 1/2 range. With the limited beginner routes, it's easy to get bored. Place is clean and the staff nice though.

Absolutely love this climbing gym! Prices are fair for rentals and day pass. About five dollars cheaper without rentals and you use your own gear. The Boulder area is really fun and seems the routes get changed fairly often which is super nice. The workout gym equipment is really nice and have decent variety of equipment.

Nice gym. It is small and a bit more expensive than it's really worth. Day passes are pretty expensive and the options don't get better from there.

I'd give this place -5stars if it were possible. They charged my 8yr old daughter and me 200 dollars to get in and then told us we couldn't climb or get certified to climb because Carona.. mind you there was no sign or notification of any kind when taking my cash. It's fine for what it is.
There's not a huge amount of routes and boulders, and it's a little pricey considering this.
Nothing about it is bad, per se, but there's nothing about it in my mind that makes it stand out above other xlimbing gyms I've been to.
Alas, I will probably return next time I'm in Missoula as it's the only one I know of around these parts.

A nice gym. Friendly climbing community. Unfortunately, super limited certification times for when you can get certified to climb ropes. I have a few friends I want to climb with but unless we arrive after 4 pm the staff won't certify them to climb. It's an inflexible policy per the front desk. Something that you should definitely know if you are from out of town and are hoping to climb ropes before 4 pm.

Holy moly the walls here are tough! Super steep gym with mostly slopers for holds. Only one vertical wall for bouldering and that had two crimpy reachy routes. Their top rope stuff starts at 10c.
The guys behind the desk were nice enough and I met a few people in my two hours there that were very pleasant, but I couldn't really climb any routes, and that's no way to set a gym. You gotta have something for everyone, not just the gorilla armed regulars.
Great facilities here, with free weights and a yoga room.

Itβs disapointing what a gym of this caliber is now charging. Limited routes, hours, and equipment. Considering that they justified the rate hike as a comparison to what other gyms charge (Spire in Bozeman?!), Iβm concerned about what improvements we will see. $70 a month at any other gym would give you fitness, yoga, and training classes..and a drinking fountain. For months now, weβve heard that Freestone is βworking on changesβ, but every month there is another excuse for why setting is being skipped, or why any yoga and training is not being offered...hire more staff, this town is full of capable, talented, experienced climbers who could bring in more variety and quality routes. We have a great climbing community that has given this gym a lot of support over the years, but this new facility lacks the energy and feel of what the old gym and staff offered. Make Freestone Great Again! And for all of our sakes, get a drinking fountain so we can be good stewards of the earth and hydrated climbers by refilling our water bottles!

It's a cool gym, but now that they put up the big walls the prices are outrageous, as in $90 for a month. I don't know why any students would continue to come here when we have access to the UM gym for free. Also, remember to bring your own water bottle. Somehow this gym doesn't have a drinking fountain, presumably to make you buy their bottled water.
