I returned to Genesis because of the quality of the gym facility and variety of group classes. Recently, I received a call from Betsy at Old Cheney with an intimidating tone , demanding payment before send my account to collections. I explained that I had multiple times to update my financial information without success, I don't signed contract. The approach from Genesis financial information feels aggressive and unsettling, things does not change through the years. ):

I've been going to the Genesis location at 70th and A for years, And have just tolerated The substandard facilities. Heard the racket club location was much improved since the remodel. This is by far the nicest club in Lincoln now. The locker room remodel is state-of-the-art. Feels more like some high-end five-star hotel spa. Most of the equipment is brand new. The pool area has both a cold tub and a hot tub which is awesome. My only gripe is the pool itself is only 20 yd long and the lanes are narrow. Not much they can do about that. They only have one lane rope in there. And the only Lane that is somewhat dedicated for lap swimming is pretty narrow. If you're over 6 ft tall and want to do butterfly you can forget about it. Unless you like scraping your fingertips on the wall and lane rope. The design of the pool is made more for swim lessons as it has high edges for kids to stand on, which is great for that purpose. Also, no crosses on the walls which make flip turns a little difficult. No flags or markers on the ceiling which make backstroke a no go, though I have figured out the support pillars on the wall are ok indicators. My biggest complaint is the water temperature. First time I went I though the water was a little warm but tolerable. However today it was cold out side, and the pool was very hot. Felt more like a weak hot tub. Swimming here you quickly overheat. I wish they would better regulate the pool temperature to something that works for everyone. 83 would be doable, though I prefer to swim at 78. On the positive side, the crowd that goes here is for the most part very serious about their fitness.

Update the day after submitting this review I went for a swim and the pool temperature was much lower. I checked and it was 82 which is much more reasonable for lap swimming. It's great going to a club that takes quick action when members have feedback.

The team at Genesis Health Clubs Racquet Club goes above and beyond! The staff excels at giving members the ultimate member experience. The facility is very well kept and clean. There's a lot of amenities offered to the members and the staff are amazing at helping members make the most of the club. I love that even when it looks packed from outside there's so many different areas inside that it's never too busy even at peak times. Between the child care, group exercise classes, the pool and hydro therapy circuit and expansive weight floor, there's something for everyone to enjoy!

The worst! This is why I stay away from big corporate gyms! I called them and asked what I needed to cancel my membership, they told me I had to pay one month and it would be cancelled. I went in, paid one month for the cancellation, the man printed off the sheet and had me sign it. Done. I asked for a copy, he said he can't give me a copy. I said if I sign something, I am definitely able to receive whatever I sign. That's the first issue. The second issue, I call to make sure because he was already acting weird. Allison says she doesn't see where I signed anything for a cancellation!!! Of course she doesn't so good thing I have that copy right? She says all this nonsense about region memberships blah blah blah. I just want to know if it's canceled because I followed everything they told me to do AND THEY TOOK A PAYMENT FROM ME. She says you should be good to go and if I need anything I will get ahold of you. Today I call to make sure it's canceled and SHE HAS THE NERVE TO SAY OH I SYSTEM WAS DOWN AND I NEVER SENT IT???? It's been over two weeks, why wasn't it sent the day I called genesis???? If they take another payment I am telling my bank it's fraudulent because there's no way you can't just push a damn button and cancel my damn membership!! It took all of 10 minutes to enroll at the gym, why would it take weeks to cancel my damn membership!!! The big gym corporations are just trying to take advantage of people.

I have been a member of Genesis for a while now and I thoroughly enjoy the facility. I’m an active retired senior so I appreciate Genesis honors the Medicare “Silver Sneakers” membership. My previous fitness center/ rehab facility did not. Initially I worked with Kevin (Sr Physical Trainer) and one other trainer to develop a weight training program and I’ve truly benefited from their knowledge and encouragement. Recently I’ve joined the Tue/Thur Gentle Yoga classes and have found them to help me with remaining flexible and balance. I appreciate the Genesis programs, lap swimming and the various weight equipment they offer for strengthening and staying in shape. My 2-3x/wk workouts has provide me opportunities to meet new friends with similar fitness's interest and personally to feel better.

The newly remodeled Genesis on old cheney is amazing!! I've been at this gym before and during Remodeling. So much more room and friendly staff. I visit family in Lincoln, Nebraska a few times each year and every time I go, I look forward to “me time” at the Genesis Health Club/Racquet Club. Their Les Mills classes (my favorites are Body Pump and Combat) are led by experienced, exceptional coaches. They remember me and make me feel like it’s my home gym! The gym’s admin makes it so easy to join right in—no hassles just hospitable and welcoming. I love it! If you live there or just visiting, don’t miss out! This place is the BEST!

This location is promoted as a flag ship gym, however, the equipment is old, broken down and some of it is not operational. I went over to Good Life Fitness to take a tour, now they have nice equipment, well kept. Mr. Stevens, when will the racquet club be receiving new gym equipment. I pay a yearly upkeep fee, exactly what is that money used for? Certainly not for upkeep. Need to compete with Good Life Fitness,

I wouldn’t pay $30 a month for this gym. It’s hot, the AC barely cools anything down, and the bathroom plays music so loud you can’t even take a proper shit. The equipment is falling apart, the hot tub was broken for over a month, and the water fountain tastes like piss. No ice machine either.

If you’re actually trying to weight train, good luck. They’ve got four non-angled flat bench presses, one standard pec fly which is often broken, and the machines are packed so tight you can barely walk between them. Most of the adjustable bench’s have the knob missing so you need to destroy your hand adjusting them or use a towel again at a 100 dollar a month gym. There is also a whole second floor that’s literally just sitting there doing nothing.

The two pics I shared? One’s of broken equipment that clearly hasn’t been maintained, the other is a weight scale that looks like it predates covered wagons. And that busted light fixture? It’s been out for months.

For what’s supposed to be Lincoln’s “best gym” or most “premium” option, you’d honestly get a better experience at a high school rec center. I’d recommend getting a Vasa membership instead.

It was great returning a couple years back, even through the construction. Manager and front desk staff are always super friendly. Lots of free weights, several squat racks and smith machines etc. Even as a gym built for everyone you can still get your heaviest lifting in. The aerobics classes (especially Paul) are great! Even for people like myself that aren't the smoothest at class!

i once watched someone sneeze on a treadmill with snot on the screen. 3 days later i walked by the same one and the same snot was there.

pictures of 3 different equipment i use and it has looked like that for years. it is the only machines they have of those 3.

I trained at the racquet club all throughout my youth. Stopped going when I went to college, and have now recently gotten a membership again, and started going back. My family has been going there for about 30 years. I've now gotten a membership elsewhere and will be canceling my membership before this next billing cycle. A buddy of mine and his family made the same switch a couple weeks ago for the same reason, and another buddy of mine started looking at other options yesterday as well. The staff is simply incapable of setting the control pad for the sauna to consistently operate during the proper hours (the hours they're open) The 1st couple of months I mistakenly assumed this was a short term issue, and gave the benefit of the doubt, but the issue has become way too consistent, and has gotten to the point where a lot of us have now come to expect the incompetence. Me and many others have respectfully told the staff that the sauna isn’t functioning properly, and someone needs to set the control pad onto the proper cycle for their business hours. I don’t know if the staff just doesn’t care about the problem, or if no one on the staff knows how to operate the control panel, but either way it’s annoying. I don't like to make the decision to leave the racquet club because when running properly I believe that the dry sauna here is the best option in Lincoln. However, that’s obsolete when it’s never on. When I can lift at home then go to an operational sauna at Hotworx or other saunas in the Lincoln area that actually work, as opposed to showing up to a 75 degree sauna at the racquet club- the decision makes itself.

I grew to love Genesis racquet club more and more everyday.
Great tennis programs for both adults and children. Fungai has made them very competitive and attractive ( compared to other tennis programs in town). Great tennis professionals provide both group and private lessons, they help you and/or your kids to improve tennis skills fast and steadily. Awesome viewing room for tennis courts as well.
Pilates is another reason I love Genesis more and more, all of the instructors are amazing, but my personal favorite ones are Christy, Tammie and Monica. They are very knowledgeable and provide absolutely the best atmosphere for Pilates training.
Personal training is the third thing on the list that I love Genesis. Gage Smith is great at strength training and injury prevention/ recovery training as well.
The pool area is newly renovated, including hot tub, cold plunge and sauna.
They also have three brand new pickle ball courts. Childcare center has a huge space and the staff members are wonderful.
The manager Jared is THE one who you go to when it comes to membership and other customer support questions. He is super friendly, always trying his best to help people, and he has the biggest smile on his face every day! All of the front desk staffs are very welcoming and helpful. The GM Joe is a great guy, very down to earth and always trying to make sure all members are comfortable with the amenities and other accommodations.

I would say Genesis is the best in town in terms of the facilities and the services they provide. It can drastically improve your health both mentally and physically, If you give it a chance and come try it out, you will see the results quickly!

If you want a 1990s-style gym membership with hidden fees and cancellation headaches, then Genesis is the place for you.

When I signed up three months ago, I was told there was only a monthly fee—no membership fee, no extra charges. Fast forward to today, and suddenly, I get hit with a $41 “enhancement” fee that was never mentioned.

When I called to cancel, I was told I couldn’t do it over the phone—I had to come in and sign a form in person. And to top it off, that form also required me to pay another full month just to cancel.

The money isn’t a big deal for me, but for someone on a budget, this kind of shady, misleading pricing could really hurt. If they’re willing to lie about fees upfront, what else are they hiding?

Avoid the backdoor charges—try a gym that’s honest about its pricing. Your local fitness centers won’t pull stunts like this.

Genesis on Old Cheney is one of the worst fitness clubs to belong to. They make it incredibly difficult to cancel your membership, I will NEVER sign up again. I went into the club to cancel. Liz took my name down on a PIECE OF PAPER. I knew something was fishy, so I called the manager Jared who then said he would cancel my account. A month later, I was charged AGAIN. I called the manager, Jared, who then said he is working on it. It has now been almost 3 months and I still have no refund. I have called the club manager, Jared, and even talked to the operations manager who has never called me back regarding my refund. I am extremely disappoint as I was a loyal member for almost 2 years at this club. I decided to cancel because the construction to the building took way longer than promised when I signed up and machines were broken all the time and would never be fixed in a timely manner. I was also very upset when they decided to remove the basketball court for pickleball courts.

Like their tennis courts, but admin is terrible. I canceled membership several months ago--including by providing the contractually-required 30 days' notice, but was charged another month after that. The club manager, Jared Brinkman, told me by email that this was a mistake and that he was going to request that this charge be reimbursed. More than 4 months later, and multiple requests for an update, I still haven't received the reimbursement and have now been ghosted by email for months.

Great place for playing pickleball, other than the fact that they have not updated/replaced their broken, torn up, sagging pickleball nets in the year that I've lived here. There are a lot of people playing pickleball here every week, and the very least the club could do is update the nets every 6 months or so, or at the very least every fall/winter season when indoor play ramps up. It is annoying to have to find a way to make the net stand up on it's own every time I play here. Pickleball could be much better taken care of. Other than that, the staff here are very nice and accommodating and the facility is clean.

Love coming here! My children absolutely love the child watch, from the front desk to the managers they treat my kids as their own. Staff is super friendly and the facility is superb. I love attending their social events each month, it shows great appreciation for their members!

Personal trainer Jeremy Wallace worked with me for over an hour. He went beyond good, he was great. Showed me examples of how to do everything correctly. Also actively stretching out my imbalances.

Dirty.. go to the wet sauna and you’ll still find the same price of dirt that was there two weeks ago. Still don’t understand why a hose was not installed in the wet sauna to wash of other people’s filth. Terrible construction decisions. Walk around and you can see improper leveling of the concrete in the pool area and still have the filth from the construction. Cold plunge still doesn’t work. Air leaks in the hot tub. Someone decided it was a good idea to use a metal door in the dry sauna. You will burn yourself on the door if you’re not careful. Dirty showers. Broken equipment on the daily. Instead of buying new weighted balls they duck tape the balls. Lack of modern equipment.

We were previous members and put that membership on hold during COVID. We recently rejoined. We worked with Ben and had some training sessions with Jeremy. We live close to the 70th St gym but like the option of using the other locations. Overall we have enjoyed our experience back at Genesis.

Joe-manager @ Genesis- reached out personally and brought out more dumbbells and cleared up the Bootcamp/upstairs issue. Truly appreciate the effort and will happily be skipping to my favorite gym again. Thank You Joe for caring!!!

What happened to this gym?? I used to love Love LOVE this gym. Now I have to bring in my own weights to the gym- who does that? Why, u ask?? Because 5 lb dumbbells are kept in the group class room or some crazy black(literally NO LIGHTS) room... How am I supposed to find weights in a room w/ NO LIGHTS??? OK let's move on to the second issue- when group classes are not in the group class room but rather the whole upstairs- so when Bootcamp starts u r kicked out of the area u r excersing in.... OK fine- where can I go to finish my ab reps?? Oh the Dark Room of Death or RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE FRONT DOOR??? How does that make sense??? Why do I want to be on front door display when I'm literally dying?? This gym no longer feels welcoming but rather a bunch of people/machines stuffed into 1 largish section and an upstairs that one may or may not be ALLOWED to use. Very disappointed Genesis.

Would love to see this place get back to its hours of operation before COVID. It’s my biggest factor for looking at other gyms is the lack of hours.

If hours increase and they bring back tanning beds this is an easy 5 star.

Just started working out again and have really enjoyed the atmosphere and all the updates they are doing. To kick things off I worked with Matt a personal trainer there, and he really helped guide me towards a great plan. Listened and understood some limitations I have from a car accident.

Six weeks ago the answer to, “When is the pool going to be open?” was, “I don’t know.” Today? Same answer. Really? How is that acceptable? It’s not. It’s not good business and such poor customer service. Essentially, it’s, “I don’t know when what you’re paying for will be available,” the Genesis front desk staff member says. “You don’t know?” The customer responds. “That’s right.” Absurd!

The indoor pool and some of the rooms aren't done with all the renovations but it's very modern. Lots of workout equipment available.
Big new locker rooms.
Don't have to bring a lock they're already in the locker door. (No, not like the ones in school) You'll see when you try the place.

The Old Cheney Genesis location is getting close to finished with a major renovation. It’s looking great, and an awesome place to workout no matter what your fitness goals are. They’ve got tons of free weights, dumbbells, machines, cardio equipment, and plenty of floor space. At peak times it gets a little crowded, but nothing too bad.

Staff is great the remodel feels like its been going on for 2 years. I pay a premium rate but its not even finished yet . Tanning would be nice and a stand up bed like planet fitness has. The new locker rooms are done and look very nice. They have alot of classes and a variety of equipment.

No other place I’d rather workout then here. Staff is friendly, helpful and makes going to the gym a great experience. Didn’t start working out until recently and I’m glad this is place I started at. Also lots of amenities this place isn’t just a weight room.

I attend Wednesday night Zumba and Thursday night Barre whenever I can. The instructor, Christy, is awesome! She's so sweet, and it's a great workout. Come check it out sometime. It's a super welcoming group.
