Update Nov 2025: the setting has changed and is super inconsistent. There is a HUGE jump in difficulty between the V0s and V1s. Also, most routes are not set for people with different body types anymore. Lots more folks running around under climbers now. :(
Nov 2023: I like the Refuge overall. Cool roof, nice people, lots of routes. Suggested improvements would be to improve down climbs holds. Many of them only allow you to descend by cutting feet, and then the one or two down holds abruptly stop 14 feet off the ground instead of 15 feet. Not super effective. This is the worst down climb setup I've seen of any bouldering gym (and I've been to 6 other gyms). Lastly, please consider adding a woman setter who checks some of the routes. Probably 20% of the routes are reachy compared to other gyms I've been to.

Edit 8/28/2025
I'm updating my rating to 4 stars. I been as though i was not entirely fair. These gyms are about the climbers and the routes they climb. Based on that alone it's a 5 star place
Its when you add the other things that I mentioned that aren't really pertinent to the climbers did you have to start lowering the rating and even then I don't think I was fair when I took away two stars
So I'm updating it to four stars but keeping an original review because that all still remains relevant I think
i've been to the other places around Vegas (as a watcher, not a climber) my son says it's a lot more advanced. and pretty confusing at first
they don't have the grades on the routes they have like a number and it's from 1 to 39 based on easiest to hardest. I don't know they said it was left over from a competition and they just kept it
The holds on a route are the same color but they also use a color system for the difficulty and those two colors do not match.
And the only place to find out what color is what difficulty is on a poster at the front of the gym.
then they put the color on some tape and the tape on the starting holds. Sometimes they have to color the tape the right color to match the difficulty and that never matches the holds.
This type of stuff might cause frustration for a newbie but for I don't think it'll be a big deal if you've already climbed a few times
It's not very clean but I mean due to the nature of it and the nature of the sport it's not really expected to be clean. There are other places in vegas that are immaculate though.
The staff is super friendly and there's a lot of camaraderie between climbers. It can be very intimidating for a newbie though I think. And the routes are higher difficulty than they appear
One of the great things about this place is if you're not a climber just a watcher who hangs out with their climber there are seats at every single area so you can be sitting down in a bench close to your climber and record or cheerlead etc.
however good luck finding an available seat which brings me to my biggest issue with the place
It's a lot more crowded than the other and I mean A. LOT. MORE. CROWDED.
at no point where we not almost shoulder to shoulder with somebody. there was an entire section of the gym that was standing room only.
Based on the confusion of the routes and how packed it was I would say start somewhere else and only go here once you are comfortable as a climber then you won't have to deal with any of the issues

This gym is absolutely fantastic. With the recent competition they held, the setting is the best I have seen in the past 6 months. Not to say the setting is bad, but no matter what I got on I had a blast. From super flowy foot work, aggressive throws and crossovers, to puzzling sequences that took a group of us to figure out ...chefs kiss π€π». It has a super chill vibe and I have yet to run into anyone with a bad attitude. If you are looking for a bouldering gym this is your spot. I also really appreciate that the holds are not all modern dual-tex compy holds. They do sprinkle them in if that's what you are looking for. Dont let the grading scare you away. People complain cause they want to feel good, not get good π€·π»ββοΈ. This gym is truly a refuge ππ»

The staff here are very friendly and the gym feels small and cozy (though I imagine it can get chaotic when the gym is crowded).
The grading is by a circuit system and the route setting definitely feels like it biases towards outdoor classic climbing (crimps, bad feet, slopers galore). Personally I like it, but I do like the setting at my gym more (my home gym has both comp-y and classic problems where as refuge feels lacking in comp-y setting). Thatβs just a personal preference tho.
Grading is stiffer than my home gym but tbh not by as much as I thought it would be based on the comments here. I think the grading is pretty reasonable and thereβs plenty of problems for all skill level.
I donβt live in Vegas but if Iβm town and needing a gym for a day I would definitely come back.

Nice staff, but very rough grading of routes. I can usually do V3s comfortably as a climber under 5β, but even some of their VBs I couldnβt complete. I shouldnβt have to do dynamic movements and leaps for the easiest routes the gym has to offer. The lights also flicker every once in a while. I wouldnβt recommend this gym unless youβre very experienced.

The grading is alittle tougher than other gyms weβve been to (SBP, Hollywood boulder, LA boulder) but the routes are technical and a lot of fun. Despite the size of the gym, you can easily spend 2hrs on the routes on not get bored if you go a couple times a week. If you go everyday and climb you might do all the routes too fast (within a week) and have to wait for a switch out. The reason I gave a 3-star was because the staff is pretty distant and not friendly compared to other gyms. The only treadmill in the gym was down for about 3 weeks and the staff seemed annoyed every time I asked when it would be fixed since that was mostly the reason why I chose this gym. I donβt climb as much on weekdays and needed a treadmill for weekly training.

Pretty good gym. Good setting. OK community. Too obsessed with profit. Always busy, only gym in Vegas right now. Effectively the only gym I've ever been a member of with no guest pass. Have one but it is only usable if the person has never been to the gym so it is not a membership benefit but a gym advertising tool.
The owner only hires women too which is pretty creepy.

Routes are graded aggressively.. I usually climb V3-V4 at my home gym in CA but, my ego took a hit today.
V1s and V2s only during this 1 hr session. Would have also liked some more slabs, walls are a bit old, but there is plenty to try as a visitor.
Also walls are nearly un-smear-able.
Climbers are friendly. Staff was friendly. Prepare to be humbled at all levels.

Vibe is off, and if you try to contact them, they will avoid you. I have tried for three months to talk to them after they raised their prices halfway through my annual membership (they sent out something saying if you are concerned, contact us here) but the owner always seemed to conveniently be out of town. Even before this issue I usually felt icky going because their clients gave me weird looks for not being a gym bro. If I could go back and undo only one choice I have made in my life, it would be signing up to go to this gym.

Visited when in town and feels very much like my local home gym vibe. I appreciate the tougher "outdoor" grade and found it does translate fairly well with tougher gyms and crags. The boulder problems were fun and the training area well equipped. It's not your "modern city gym" feel but rather the grungy garage vibe (and I love it!)

Great place to Boulder with realistic grading of routes. This isn't some frou frou type of gym. If you're looking to climb hard and to do it with a great group of people this is the place to be.
I'm a mediocre climber so this gym was an exercise in humility but I loved it. I hate soft grading that's so prevalent in other climbing gyms. Whenever I'm in Las Vegas and have the time I'm here.

Pros:
1. Grading is closer to outdoor grades than most gyms. The grades will feel stiff compared to most climbing gyms.
2. The staff are friendly and supportive.
3. Open until 10pm.
4. This is the closest climbing gym to the strip if you are one of the many people visiting Vegas on business, and you just need to get some reps in while you're away from home.
5. There is a small workout area including a moon board, tension board and some weights. There are also 3 auto belay stations if you bring a harness, but this is primarily a bouldering gym, so I would consider these more of a training perk.
Cons:
1. Chalk is everywhere. I've climbed in gyms all over the US, and I've never seen a gym with a chalk problem this bad. The first thing I noticed when I walked inside was the chalk cloud in the air. This will undoubtedly cause many regulars to have chronic lung issues later in life. This place would really benefit from 2-3 chalk eaters. Also, chalk is layered so thick on some of the holds that it is sometimes hard to tell if you're on route if an adjacent problem is a similar color. These should be thoroughly cleaned on a more regular basis.
2. Layers of paint on the walls. It's peeling off in many places and scrapes off under your fingernails. It's clearly old and time for a renovation.
3. Unaware crowds. Like most busy gyms this place gets crowded. Unfortunately, people here just sit in crowds under overhanging walls limiting the useful climbing space.

I'm from Seattle and our are almost double the cost but they are also twice as large or greater. I really didn't like that people here also sit on the mats blocking wall space. I didn't climb much because of that and people left their water bottles pushed up against the mat which is an ankle breaking hazard. The ping pong table was ridiculous, having to dodge the ball and people at a climbing gym. It was in the direct walkway and right in front of the bathroom. I really would have liked to enjoy my time instead of leaving after 20 minutes because everything was blocked.

Bouldering grades are pretty tough here if you've been to a variety of gyms; I can usually climb a V5 at most gyms, here I could barely crack their version of a V3-V4!
Staff very friendly, nice atmosphere, good price on day pass and show rental. Would come here more if I was local, just the tough grading can be demotivating if you're newer

Great gym with many versatile routes. However, I can confidently say that the routes are sandbagged! Based on the style of the routes, and the grading, my guts are telling me that the route setters are board climbers, who are often super strong, hence, sandbagging :) still a great gym though.

Mid size bouldering gym with modern "color" setting. Kids area with three short autobelays, treadwall, 2024 moonboard, original tension board(soon to be T2) and weight area.
Has claimed title of the Hardman Vegas gym for a while now - problems tend to be reachy and sandbagged - so prepare for ego to be sore along with your body. Only issue I have is some walls are tall and foam is getting packed out so downclimbing recommended and go early if you can as it is a victim of its own success and it gets busy midweek after work.

I feel bad giving this place a 1 star because its not a terrible gym- theres just a lot of issues..
For refrence:
I have been climbing for about a year, at other gyms and moved to this side of town so I I came on a saturday to check it out.
I didnt love it, didnt hate it. I liked the settings but the layout was uncomfortable because there is no place to sit and chill between attempts where you arent in someone elses landing spot for a good amount of the gym. In addition to that, the culture felt.. off? Kind of frat boyish which is not the culture I was used to at other gyms previously.
I decided to get a 1 month membership to see if I liked it and got talked into a 3 month membership since they charge you a substantial fee for only getting 1 month-
I can see why..
I've since come 5-10 times and maybe twice was it worth going- simply because it's so busy. Regardless of if I go an hour before close, or as soon as I get off work, It's so packed that It's not a comfortable environment.
I've actually brought other climbers here and we left early because of the layout and amount of people.
I know every climbing gym is going to have a different feel and culture but this one feels not as friendly and more competitive than other gyms I've been to. If that is your thing- rad!
Overall, it's not for me, but now I'm stuck in a 3 month contract.
Since signing up here, I have paid for memberships at another gym, and rather than drive the 7 minutes to refuge, I drive the 30 to other options 3-5 times a week.
If this sounds like it might be for you- awesome.. but it isn't for me, and the 3 people I have brought here all felt the same way.

I felt like a loser with the sandbagged grades hahaha. But that's what makes people improve, so.. not sure if a good or bad thing
Boulders are well set and walls are pretty tall, which is cool. Can be frustrating for beginners, as there aren't many easy climbs
The feedbacks I have are:
- to improve the showering structure. Just one shower and not very comfortable
- to clean the holds more often. Some footholds were super slippery from dust (not chalk, but regular dust)

Had a negative experience my first go around, went back 8 months later and had a much different experience.
First time going was negative overall, the routes were sandbagged to the point it was just not fun for a beginner, even on the VB (less than a V0) climbs, and the mats were rock hard making the ?16? Foot climbs super sketchy.
Today I went back and actually had a really nice time. The few people I met were really nice, the mats weren't as hard, and the grading wasn't as sandbagged. The routes were also really fun and cool!
In fact, I was gonna convert my day pass to a month pass!
Until I heard there was a $29 dollar sign up fee, and they auto bill you every month..
Every other climbing gym I've been to, you pay the 60-100 bucks and that's that for the month. Pay when your thing runs out.
I don't really like that business practice and as great of a time as I had, I don't want to support that? I think i'll wait until they have a special to drop the fee and keep my membership elsewhere until then.
Old review under this vvv
==========================
Cool routes but the community did not feel friendly at all compared to other climbing gyms I've been too.
The landing pads are super stiff which isn't great for their top out boulders being as high as they are.. 15ft
Also, and I will say I'm newer to the sport but the grading seems a bit pretentious.. a v1 that's overhang with crimps?? I don't mind a challenge or an ego check- my goal is personal improvement rather than be pro or hit a certain 'grade' but I feel like they make their grades hard compared to other gyms and even local outdoor climbs.
I made a joking comment to someone and their response was "it's a REFUGE V2- keeps the posers out" they meant it as a joke but it didn't quite land .. overall cool place but felt a bit pretentious compared to past experiences with other climbing gyms.
I'll keep my membership at other gyms but probably stop by every once in awhile for a challenge if when I feel like hitting some new problems.

My first time at this gym and I absolutely love the settings.
Iβve been climbing for 1.5 years and noticed some of the VB-V3 climbs are sandbagged. Not sure how beginners can even climb some of the easier sets!
The gym has a training area and itβs so well used. A lot of climbers here donβt slack on training and you can tell because there were a lot of strong climbers on a schedule or had their training apps on! I personally enjoyed the treadwall because I donβt have this back at my home gym. I also appreciate the tension and moonboard and the different varieties of climb, especially the slab wall.
Not sure if I would recommend this gym for beginners but if youβre more on the experienced side, I think youβll appreciate the sets here.

I am a beginner climber. This place had plenty of areas for rock climbing at the most basic levels to keep me busy for an hour, at least. Some of the tools they had would probably be really appreciated by higher level climbers. Entry was reasonable and it included a rundown of how to identify the climbing paths, plus a few pointers. The membership seemed reasonable if you might be one that climbs at least a couple times a week. Bring your own chalk.

Wide space with many varied walls, dedicated to bouldering. Crags are routinely reset. The space is open, clean, and well-lit. Problems are coded by hold color. I've found that they grade their problems a bit tougher compared to R2C2 (e.g. a V3 here is tougher for me than a V3 at R2C2). The staff are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. It feels like there's a good community here; I'm a novice climber, but this place has felt casual and not too intimidating.
They have a Moonboard and Treadwall-style climbing treadmill.

Visited while out of town on a work trip and highly recommend to anyone needing a refuge from the hustle and bustle and climb. Very short Uber ride from the strip and very fair price (around $18) for visitor. I brought shoes but rented a chalk bag (was about a dollar to rent). Easy/fast check in, incredible person at the front desk who also gave a quick tour of the facility. Has everything from bouldering, auto belay, and βworkout sectorβ. People were very kind and let you do your thing and were talkative if you felt like chatting. Will definitely visit whenever Iβm in town.

I liked it more then The Pad. Nice atmosphere and setting seemed accurate. Itβs not a mega gym but plenty to keep you busy. The bouldering pads seem stiff compared to my local gym in Atlanta. I was worried about take and unexpected fall. Overall enjoyed it and will definitely go back when in Vegas.

This is a nice gym for sure. The routes are good and challenging BUT..... Some of the grades are not consistent at all. For an example some of the V1s near the entrance feel like V0s and the V1s in the center island are like V3 or V4s. Edit: problem found, it was just me not knowing what I was talking about.

Fun experience all around. Renting stuff out was a breeze. I recommend asking the staff how to land on the cushioned areas when climbing on the wall and losing grip and falling if it's your first time indoor climbing.

As a n00b to bouldering I really enjoyed my intro course. 1 1/2 hours with an instructor and group of 3 was plenty, my arms were aching by the end and my hands begging for a rest. Plus the intro includes shoes while I was there and another week of gym access, great deal IMO. I'll definitely consider coming back to try some more exercises in the future. Staff were all very helpful and the place had a nice chill vibe on a Saturday lunch time. The instructor said Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the busiest times

Great gym! Everyone was friendly the routes are graded fairly although i disagree with spectrum rating they were fairly accurate. Everyone i ineracted with was great and the grading was firm but not sandbagged. Looking forward to climbing at refuge again on my next vegas trip!

Great walls! Not too many routes for beginners, but great variety as you get more experience. Mats are a little on the firm side for me.
Edit: If you're just getting started, you'll probably be able to hit all the runs in your skill level, but that's a good thing! You'll be pushed to try out some new stuff when you come in.

I had heard all kinds of things about how stiff the pads are at Refuge, and how you don't want to fall from the top, always down climb, yadda yadda. Honestly, I'm guessing all of those people were rope climbers. If you're a boulderer, and you boulder outside, the pads are fine. They're better than a triple stack of Organic pads, that's for sure! The setting is great, as well.

Took the beginner boulder class. It's was a great deal, $29 for the class and you get a whole week of gym access with equipment rental included. I took the class Monday night with two other people. Our instructor was very patient and helpful. He taught us the basics then had us try our own deltas. He gave advice on how to approach the wall based on our personal skill levels. You have to sign up for classes 3 days in advance.

Cool little place! If you love bouldering this is the spot!. Cool technical boulders plenty to choose from. If you like auto belays not the place to be only 3 auto belays here. Despite that friendly staff chill atmosphere. This is a comparison to Stone Age gym in Albuquerque NM.

Nice, friendly gym with great Boulder problems. I found their system of marking climb difficulty a bit hard to follow (small colored tapes at the start of the route, as I belong to 10% of population with color vision difficulty).

I live in a town of 900 people. Our local gym has both a moonboard and tension board. Both adjust from 25-40Β°. Both work. I paid for a full day at Refuge and found out after I had warmed up that the tension board is malfunctioning and neither board is adjustable from 40Β°. In fact by the looks of it the tension board is 43Β°?? Super bummed to not be able to train properly and keep my routine while here for work. 17$ to get misled...?? Lame.

Filled out online waiver before going in but it was some how lost so I had to fill out again. No big deal but staff comment about last time I filled out a waiver was five years ago, not needed and felt unfriendly. Also keep in mind i had filled out a waiver online just a couple days earlier knowing I hadn't been there in over five years. The problems only progressed in the over all experience at THE REFUGE enough so that I have taken time to put it here on a review.

Some of the greasiest slimmest holds that are just begging for a cleaning here. Great time though and the setting is some of the best in Vegas. You'll want to downclimb here as you'll probably bust your ankle of the extremely hard mats. Has a little bit of everything climbing wise and good gym equipment such a rowers and weights.

I'm really grateful for this place. It's very well maintained and I appreciate the thought they put into constructing all the various routes/problems. I feel like the crowd here is very accepting and accommodating of beginners. From the staff I've met Justin, Kaylee, Sophia, Brooke, and Tim and everyone is very nice and supportive. I'm grateful for how clean they keep the place and everyone seems happy to be there. I'm doing what I can to get more people to come in and try it out to show my gratitude and support. Thank you for creating this place and doing such a great job.
