I usually have a great experience at this Planet Fitness location and even drive 35 minutes to come here because the gym has become part of my mental wellness routine. Unfortunately, I recently had a very upsetting interaction with a staff member named Joe (older Indian male) that I feel needs to be addressed.

I’m a Black Card member and haven’t used the amenities in a while, so last week I decided to use one of the massage chairs. I went to the self-service screen to sign up, and while I was doing that, Joe came over and started handling the reservation. He told me the massage chairs were currently occupied and that as soon as someone finished, I could use one, which was completely fine.

When someone left, I went back to him, and he told me to use “chair #1.” When I went to the section I used in the past (over 5 years ago), I didn’t see a chair labeled #1. Only chairs #6–12. I assumed there was an error or maybe I misunderstood, so I sat in chair #6. When I pressed the screen, it asked for a code. Something told me to check the other side, and that’s where I saw chairs #1 and #2. I realized I had made an honest mistake and went back to Joe to explain that I made a mistake and would prefer to use the reclining massage chairs on the other side if possible.

Instead of simply helping, he repeatedly pointed out my mistake in a rude tone. I told him I understood where I messed up and that he didn’t need to speak to me that way, but the attitude continued.

He eventually changed my reservation, but when I sat down at the new chair, the screen asked for a code again. I went back to let him know, and he paused his video call, put both hands on the counter, and said, “Why are you doing this? Why are you being difficult?” in a degrading tone. I explained I was only informing him that the machine was asking for a code. When I told him I would be reporting his behavior, he responded, “I don’t care! Go ahead and report me.”

A simple “No worries, mistakes happen. I’ll cancel the reservation for you and reserve the correct chair” when I first approached him, and a simple explanation like “The machine takes a few minutes to start. Just lay there and give it a few minutes to start, and if it doesn’t start in a minute, come back to me” the second time I approached him, would have made all the difference. If he is not able to provide good customer service, he should be in a role that doesn’t involve direct interaction with members. His behavior was completely uncalled for.

I left feeling humiliated and ended up crying in my car. This gym has been such a positive and important part of my healing, and it hurt to be treated that way.

Today, I went back and spoke with the manager, Autum, who was great and apologized for his behavior, said she would review the tapes, and assured me she would speak with him. I originally wasn’t going to say anything or post this, but I think it’s important to raise awareness in case this happens to someone else. Being kind doesn’t cost anything.

In the 10+ years I’ve been coming here, the staff has always been wonderful, and this was the first negative experience I’ve ever had. I hope management addresses it and I hope Joe never speaks to someone else the way he spoke to me.

I do my beach muscle workout with the black card membership. I also use the tanning and massage chairs. The machine I wanted to use was supposedly broken and had a sign on it that I didn't see. It wasn't broken and I did my workout on it. A staff person told me it was broken and didn't I see the sign? I asked if he'd like to have the sign. I also asked him to tell them to fix the equipment. That seems to be an ongoing issue. Equipment remains on maintained for long periods of time.

Things have gotten much worse since the “new matrix equipment” has arrived. They removed half the machines and now there’s 1 of each and more spaced out. Now that I used it, but they also removed the 30 min workout section for beginners. Gym has so much wasted space and have to wait now for equipment. Terrible management decisions. They should ask their customers what they want instead of assuming it would be a great idea to remove half the machines

If there is a statewide shortage of treadmills, you could come here to find one! This Planet Fitness I would describe as the Planet Fitness in Derry and Stratham had a child and it was this franchise! Tall ceilings! Each area has its own space with a lot of room to move around. Up to date equipment. The older style of massage chairs, but, the one I used worked well.
The locker room was well kept , but, the size of the full locker was about 3/4ths the size of other lockers I've used. Bathroom, I hope that was water in front of the toilet!
Though the employees were friendly, only one smiled, and that was when I was leaving.
Update: July 2025; Friendly staff. They could use more equipment. Long wait time to use popular exercise machines. Shower 🚿 area was in good shape but on of the changing room doors did not lock. Message chairs need to be reupholstered. I was concerned that a fellow customer set up a camera 📸 on a tripod to film 📽️ himself working out when the policy is no pictures on the workout floor. I do not mind someone taking a quick photo of a display on a machine to personally document 📄 an achievement that they accomplished. Did he receive permission to do this?
Guys leaving drenched underwear 🩲 in the changing area and used bandaids in the shower 🚿 was gross, and not Michael Gross.

Look, I recognize that this is a Planet Fitness, I pay only $10 a month, and understand it’s a no-frills experience whatsoever because of that. However, this location has really disappointed me lately. I was excited when I recently saw they were making changes because there had been many machines that were in rough shape and needing to be replaced. However, I was extremely frustrated when I saw the results of this so-called “renovation”. They completely removed many machines without replacing them or left only one available to use now. This is incredibly annoying because they are popular machines and many times people hog them to the point where sometimes during my visit I can’t even use them because people will sit there on the machine for a half hour using their phones. Also, I was really crushed to see they got rid of the 30 minute workout area completely. I honestly don’t know what the heck they were thinking with these changes because based on other reviews it looks like this understandably upset other members as well. I honestly might consider switching to a pricier gym because at this point, $10 a month isn’t worth it if I can’t even use a majority of the machines I went there for. What a shame.

They took all the equipment in the 30 minute room and put in weights. Since getting new cardio equipment and dismantling the 30 minute circuit workout area, I would give the Salem NH location 0 stars if possible. The staff isn't trained on the new machines and how to change the settings, especially on the elliptical machines. They reduced the amount of 30 minute workout machines by 40% and stuck them in front of the entrances to the locker rooms. It's to bad they decided to make these changes, which doesn't seem to be for the better.

Always crowded, machine access is a pain. Free weight is a non-starter can't even use the circuit as too many people sitting on one machine. The waiting around makes this a very unattractive option but its location ensures it will always be like this. You'll never wait for cardio equipment because they have so many. Staff is incredibly welcoming and pleasant.

I received an email regarding customer feedback, and I shared my concerns. One of the issues I mentioned was that the salon closes at 7 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. I pointed out that the general customer base is usually working at that time and that most people prefer coming in later. However, the person who called me simply suggested visiting their other locations, as if I hadn’t already considered that option. Do not use the tanning bed in room 4. For two years I have been telling staff something is wrong with it. It bakes you on your back and no color on the front. I’ve brought this up multiple times to different staff members.

The staff always says oh well we just changed all the bulbs so it’s fixed.

It’s not fixed. I’ve gotten severe sunburns from that bed (doing my typical time that Ive done in any tanning bed for the past 15 years). Perhaps this review will get someone to fix it but I doubt it.

WiFi is aweful. I can’t even use YouTube half the time. Huge disappointment.

Im giving a 4/5 because of gym goers that frequent here and nothing to do with the quality of the staff, gym, or equipment. This is one of the nicest planet fitnesses I’ve been to, but the men here particularly seem to monopolize the machines, spend an extra long time on their phone between sets, and judgingly stare if you lift weights. It’s unfortunate, we are all here for similar reasons, but their behavior is super off putting and I’d much rather go to another PF to avoid this kind of vibe.

Apparently the S. NH plumber's strike (that doesn't exist) has been settled as there are now signs that the showers will be fixed - next week - and they actually seem to be celebrating this achievement as some sort of miracle. Maybe pulling my annual dues in a timely manner pushed them over the top. The comment a month ago was "You don't know how many times we've called". You're right, I don't but i could guess zero, or maybe once...what's the point.

3 weeks with 2 of the 3 non handicap showers down seemingly in need of no more than a valve. Been months since there was hot water in the sinks, which with their motion operated 3 second run time already were pretty useless. Was great for the first few years, now, not.

Planet Fitness in Salem NH used to be awesome. Now it has broken tanning beds that don't seem to be getting fixed any time soon. A lot of the machines were also broken, like the tread mill machines and a few others. I have the black membership which I thought was worth it when it used to be open 24 hours. Now they close early Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 7pm and Sundays too. I work weird hours so the open hours worked better for me. I wonder if it will ever go back to being awesome. A year ago when I first joined, I would have rated this 5 stars. New manager and things aren't what they use to be. Now, when a machine breaks, it's > a month before it's fixed. They run out of supplies (today, no paper towels to wipe down machines, was told they ran out). I'm a Black Card member, two of the hydro machines have been down for a month. Overall, there are a lot of machines, it's bright and generally clean; too bad it has taken a step backwards with the management change. It can get busy, which makes it important for the machines to be repaired, too bad they can't seem to keep machines in working shape. The machines are a bit older than some of the other Planet Fitness locations (like Londonderry) and the weights on the machines in Salem don't go as high as other locations, so it's easy to max a machine out.

My son goes to this gym, he can be somewhat shy so if he likes it which he loves it he says than anyone can go..its not that crowded when he goes which is every day mostly before dinner time. if you pay the 24.99 a month you can get a personal trainer 30 min sessions, you can bring 1 person with you unlimited, there are many more perks for this price as well..check it out, nice and clean as well..

Marked on my calendar the day I can leave this gym and not renew my membership. Awful customer service, if you have an issue good luck getting it resolved. The equipment stays out of service for weeks at a time.
I notice it is difficult to get good workouts in with the limited amount of stuff they have. I would consider at least looking into other options before signing yourself away here, do not make the mistake I did. You may think these things won't bother you at first but they will eventually.

It’s unfortunate as a customer of planet fitness for years I have had to jump through hoops to only have my issue unresolved. My last check-in was 4/27/22 and I sent an inquiry about canceling my membership on 4/28/22 due to the COVID numbers going back up. I went into the gym and spoke to Nate on 5/11/22 and asked about getting a refund for the annual fee of $39 that was charged to my account on 5/1/22. He told me it wouldn’t be a problem and he would have a manager reach out to me. A manager never reached out. I called yesterday 5/19/22 and was told Sabrina was on break. I called today and spoke to Sabrina and she said there is nothing she can do about the annual fee because it was charged before I canceled. It’s unfortunate that I made a request on the website with an inquiry on 4/28/22 about canceling and no one got back to me. Very poor customer service. When I first started going to this location employees were always cleaning the gym. It’s become dirty and dusty. I’ll be reaching out to corporate about the cleanliness and customer service of this location.

Apparently its not quite 24 hrs.! 7pm! On sat and sun. Really, this is a adult gym, correct? 7pm is a bit early. Trip 5 I was greeted at the front door with a sign indicating they were closing at 10pm due to a snow storm arriving 6 hours later. First let me say I understand the need for safety for staff and members but c'mon this is new england, snow is commonplace.
