Hello,
I have been trying to cancel for over 3 months. No one answers the phone, I mailed in a cancellation letter as stated in the contract, and also left a note at the front desk with date and time stamped and still being charged. It is now fraudulent charges as they are refusing to cancel membership.

The ledgewood location is a million times nicer and you can tell that's where all the money goes in terms of upkeep and equipment quality.

Imagine the gym at your highschool and thats this gym just dirtier and about 90 degrees in the summer because they dont believe in air conditioning

I used to love this place! But i’ve become disappointed and shocked with the unprofessionalism from the ownership and whoever runs their social media. I’ve been trying to cancel my membership since late September and have come in person, called, and even direct messaged on instagram. I tried contacting them again yesterday on instagram only to be BLOCKED. I don’t know what to do now because I still haven’t been able to cancel my membership. Looks like we’re all being scammed according to the comments…

Alpha Fitness is honestly the best gym here in Newton, I've been seeing a lot of reviews about the cleanliness of this place, I can truly say that this gym is as clean as it can be, as a business owner myself, it is physically impossible to sit there, dust and sanitize everything after it was used. I tend to go late and night. We as adults should know and be responsible enough to help them out. I know for a fact that late at night there is a young man working there (or at least finishing up his shift) and even when he is done working and decided to work out himself, he still walks around making sure things are put away. Because I know for a fact a lot of people don't do that. I will admit I have done that a few times myself. I've also have had a few encounters with the owner, and he has never been rude. I've had some issues with some payments in the past and speaking to the owner himself, he helped me out in fixing the issue. He was never once rude, infact he was so sweet and so understanding with me. The fact that people here are posting comments that he has responded too, trying to make him look bad, really saddens me. We are people too, we can only take bullying to a certain extent. I 1000% believe that if the rolls were reversed and the reviews were spoken to in that way, they wouldn't stand for that either and defend themselves. I have and never will speak bad about this place because I truly enjoyed my experience here and truly and cold heartedly believe this place is perfect. Now the people who go there, thats another story. This gym, the workers and the owner, are genuinely the sweetest people you'll ever meet.

Switching to one star because zero isnt and option. Gym is getting run down. Owner won't fix the AC. Dirty all the time. Random dripping water. For 2 years, there hasn't been air conditioning in this gym. Think about that for 1 second. Would you go to a gym that has no air contitioning? All summer with 90+ deg days. Surprised someone hasnt died here yet. I'm one month away from quitting. But I think I'll ride out the winter. Since we won't need the a c. After that, i'm out sorry, guys It just seems like the owners don't care. The place always smells bad.It's not clean. I hope you guys at Aplha fitness are hearing me!

This is a terrible gym for what you pay for. There are no staff weights aren’t put back it’s super cluttered and unorganized, and during the summer there’s no ac. I’ve been trying to cancel for a month now, but no one answers the phones, there’s no email, they say “shoot us a dm” but no one answers, no one works there. Save your money go somewhere else where you can pay even less for a better quality gym. What a dump.

the owner is rude, and the facility is trash. They recently expanded but didn’t upgrade or maintain a single piece of equipment. All of the dumbbells are cracking and poor quality. All Of the equipment is old and hasn’t been maintained in years. For 20+ dollars for a day pass, and 40+ for the month you should get good quality, but instead you are greeted by a money hungry gym owner who formed a monopoly in this small town. Downstairs is gross, not clean, and smells musty. If I could give this gym less than 1 star I would. I recommend never going here and taking your money elsewhere.

Good luck trying to cancel your membership. Online system doesn't let you, Newton locations phone doesn't work and Ledgewood doesn't pick their phone in the middle of the day after multiple calls over an hour period. The gym itself is run down with staff that don't care.

Update: It’s been four weeks and still no air conditioning. The lack of attention by management to this matter is appalling. I would not recommend this gym to anyone.

The owner Anthony was very rude and scared my family away!!
I have been going to alpha since I first started working out and have given them my money from the beginning! I left for a few months to try Powerhouse gym but decided I wanted to come back to alpha. My second week back my cousin who is the lead instagram marketing director for 6 time champion Chris Bumstead was visiting from florida and wanted to hit the gym. When we got to alpha there was no one at the desk so I scanned in and went to leave my stuff in the locker room and then see if a staff member showed up. The owner (Anthony) hunted my cousin, and sister who came with us down and started losing it and threatened to call the police on us for stealing and not standing around to see if a staff member showed up.
As a fellow buisness owner I would have completely understood, but now not a single person in my family wants to go work out with me there, this is not how you run a business or treat a paying customer!
Now I'm strongly considering just leaving since I can't even bring my family members here without them feel uncomfortable.

As a side note my cousin was super thrilled to see her boss on the wall of Mr Olympias in the stairwell, and wanted to send him pictures of the gym. She said she will never talk about this gym to Chris after seeing how rude the actual owner was.

Used to be a good gym. The owner is basically an absentee owner at this point. Half the machines are broken and there’s like one pin in the entire place. If you start fixing this place up I’ll gladly change my review.

**Update August 2025. If you’re looking for the worst gym possible this is it. The air conditioning was broken all summer. They raised the prices for most members. Didn’t fix anything. Called multiple times to try and cancel my membership but the voicemail is full/not working. No one works there. I guess if they charge my card again this month I’ll have to dispute it. Awful place, truly a disgrace!

Ain’t gonna lie I’m on my last straw here, for a while I was working out here for over 2 years and it was sad to see the decline in the facility. If you asked me in 2022 i would tell you to go to alpha but now I’m not gonna lie I’m considering switching to a different gym. My main reason is the price for 35 dollars a month I could do as a college student but once it got bumped to over 42 with no notice is the part that pissed me off. Not only this you thought the broken ac and the leaky pipes that drip down on you would be fixed no. I work full time in the summer and it’s an outdoor job the last thing I want to do is work out in a sauna. This location fell off and if you want to get a membership for the newton area don’t do this one

Alpha Fitness is the gym by which my children measure all other gyms. They and other family members, including out-of-town visitors, love the selection of equipment and the vibe. Today I reached out to address a billing matter with the owner, Anthony, and his demeanor left me with a positive impression. Between the 24-hour access and the friendliness of the team there, they will keep us coming back.

Thank you for the reviews from PJ & Ed. I will not join because of these reviews. Was looking for a gym closer than LA Fitness in Parsippany, where they walk around every 2 hours and can be seen cleaning the weights and the gym, also putting weights away. I will not go to a gym where they do not clean regularly.

Got a membership here awhile ago and after a month they charged me too much, I’ve talked to some others and the same happened with them, not only that but they changed the hours and it seems like even less workers are there to ask about this, they “revamped” it nearly a week ago and if anything it got worse, this place overcharges with less time to workout and sucks customer service wise, the manager is also a joke to the establishment

So I am a 60-year old very fit man who's been going to alpha fitness for approximately 2 years. Maybe a little bit more by now, since the end of covid anyway. So the hours that work for me to go to the gym are from 2 AM to 4 AM gotta be out of there to get to work by 5am. Showed up this morning 9/22/24, to find the app on my phone would not allow me to enter with a notice on the door saying that the hours have changed! No more 24/7. Without any kind of a heads up. Went in to cancel my membership later that afternoon. And the girl behind the counter told me they were hoping that less equipment would get broken from the overnight members. ( F.Y.I. most of the equipment is from the 80's and 90's I used to use the same style equipment in my 30s and 40s.) I find that funny since 3 to 4 out of 5 nights between those hours. I was always there alone and always had a clean the gym. I.e. Water bottles all over the place. Paper towels on the floor, bathrooms were a mess a lot of the time, dust bunnies as large as my fist. ( and no I didn't vacuum!) Most of the weights are busted up and haven't been replaced, nuts and bolts rolling around on the floor from equipment and most of the machines with crazy amounts of weights left on them ect. So I guess I'm a little peeved. Not sure who voted them number one gym in Sussex County? Maybe they should rethink that a bit. So I guess that's my rant. Guess it's back to Planet Fitness, at least it's clean!!!

The only reason I was going to Alpha was because they were 24h cause the machines are old, and it feels like a sauna most of the time. Now, the owner wanted to play funny and changed his hours without giving ANY notice, don’t take me wrong, it’s your gym, do whatever you want but we all showed up at night like most of us did most days just to find a sign at the door. Sr. This is poor communication, because you spent all day posting on your instagram page, the least you could do is put a note in advance to all of us who USED to support your business. What was once a great place to workout has turned into a filthy run-down dump with old, damaged equipment and a sensitive owner that doesn’t like to face reality. Since Anthony opened his Ledgewood location the Newton location has suffered, and his arrogance has clearly grown. If you go during unstaffed hours there’s a very good possibility that the music is off, and the place is in dead silence. To the right side are some outdated treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes. To the left side is the 1st workout room. Pay no mind to the hole in the ceiling as you walk in or the leaky roof from above the yellow janitorial mop bucket. You’ll run into the big red cable crossover machine that’s falling apart with missing panels and usually missing clips for the attachments or the pulley is off the tracks. Above you you’ll see a light that has been burned out for over a year now but it’s all good, you'll look better in the mirror if it's not cracked. The rest of the light’s covers are barely hanging on and will probably come crashing down at some point. A few holes punched in the walls both upstairs and downstairs, one you'll find behind the leg extension machine and the other by the seated pullover in the basement. Those have been there for over a year just pay no mind to them. Now we will head downstairs to the “Iron Basement” where the floors are filthy, and it’s been a long time since they’ve been cleaned. Don't mind the weightlifting chalk all over the floor and the bars this is a “hardcore gym.” You can tell if you look under the machines and racks as you're bound to find dust and other junk under them. If you’re brave enough to look up at the ducts, rafters, or pipes you’ll find a good assortment of dust and cobwebs. If there is a class in the studio above you get to watch it fall and make its way onto you, the machine, or the floor. Walk down that row of machines and take notice of the 2nd to last white Smith Machine and you’ll notice that the right hook that has been bent for years will add a little extra to your lift. Clearly you can see it’s been digging into the metal so that’s not something that just started but poor maintenance and lack of care. You're sure to find machines loaded with weights that you'll have to unload yourself. Hopefully if you’re female you won't get stuck with a machine that has the 100 lb plates or multiple 45 lb plates on the machine you choose to use. If you drop the 100lb plates on your foot, it will probably be your own fault based off management passing the blame. Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date, because if you touch anything that's metal to load a plate on your hands will be covered in rust. Don't worry though they'll have spray bottles of Simple Green that will leak all over your hands if you'd like to wipe a machine down, that is if the paper towel machines are even loaded. Hopefully you don't trip over the random weights, dumbbells, gallon water jugs, and water bottles that are carelessly thrown upon the floor. Check out the loose belt on the ab machine that says “check daily” that is so loose you can stick your fingers between the belt and guide. The dumbbells no longer have coatings on them so you can’t tell what weight you’re using BUT according to the January 18th post on Instagram new dumbbell’s we’re coming in February. April Fool’s because they still haven’t shown up yet and it’s May 2024. Where is your maintenance fee going because clearly it’s not into this facility???? After posting a few pics on my personal FB page, with no tags or identifying content whatsoever, the owner (Anthony) decided to publicly comment on my post in an argumentative manner attempting to defend and disregard the condition of the facility, and then publicly announced my membership is now cancelled. Which is fine he will never get another dime from me. Anthony as you read this, I’d like to remind you that the address to this building is 2 E Clinton St, Newton, NJ 07860 because clearly you went Ray Charles on this place. You can use this as a guide to help fix your gym.

I have been going to Alpha Fitness on and off since 2015. It is truly the best gym around. The gym is always clean, staff is always friendly, and I have never ever had an issue renewing or canceling my membership. Anthony and Janessa are the best. It’s a family run business and they treat their clients like family. Anthony and Janessa know their clients by name. If you are looking for a great gym in Sussex (Newton) or Morris county (Ledgewood) come to Alpha. You won’t be disappointed. When I went in person one day there was no staff present. I guess if they don't ever acknowledge you, you can't cancel. Very poor business management.

At first I was excited but when you actually use the gym it lacks in many aspects. Equipment is very old and too close together. Basement doesn’t have alot of lighting and it feels like a dungeon. No place to stretch and cardio equipment is old we’re i was on a stair master and it was making sounds. Also my first time there and I thought it would be free but no it was $15 which was not worth it. Do not recommend!

The best gym I’ve ever been to, hands down. It’s so unique to itself and the variety of equipment and machines are insane. Anthony and Janessa are awesome and super friendly. They worked really hard in making the place what it is, and it shows! It’s a hardcore bodybuilding gym in the basement with a more casual atmosphere on the first floor. To be completely honest, I'm no gym rat and understand people love this place, but for a more casual gym-goer this place felt far too cramped to me. The machines are packed so close together that it's difficult to walk through without interrupting someone else's workout and I felt practically elbow to elbow with other people. The staff is friendly and it's kept clean, it is just far too little space for the amount of people and equipment they pack in there.

Cramped & could be better. As of Summer 2019, I’m pretty sure there was only 1 water fountain and it’s in the room that they host classes in (so you can’t get in a lot of the time) Basement weight room is cramped & locker room is a very small room with only a few lockers and not a lot of privacy from the main gym. Cardio room was a nice addition and most of the machines worked great but a lot of the touch screens are badly broken and non functional.

The staff is pretty nice and it’s a clean, cool gym. I enjoyed my time here but there’s definitely room for improvement (I think that they renovated the weight room since I was last there.) All this being said, it’s far from the “best gym in sussex county.”

I tired 3 different gyms in the Area of Newton ( Retro, Alpha, and Power House). Alpha, by far is the best gym around. The environment is definitely superior than the others and the people are standout. Love coming in at whatever time works for me and being able to focus on myself for an hour or so. Would recommend to any friend or family member interested.

Alpha Fitness is an incredible gym. They offer many different services. All of which I have not tried. However, I can say if you need to stair climb, treadmill, bike, hit a class, hit a punching bag, kick a kicking bag, use low impact cable and pully systems, free weights, free weight machines, sled push, ab machines, or just look in a mirror and take a great selfie, look no further. If your a novist or Mr. Olympia, Alpha is your destination! I haven't seen SUPERMAN yet there although, so I'm assuming he works out at the wrong gym...

For a long time I thought this was the best gym, but over time the owner Anthony freda showed his true colors by screwing me out of $37.00 when he wasnt suppose to charge me because I had already cancelled my membership. When i called him out on it he promised to return the money however that never happened in fact he was very nasty to me. I would not reccomend this gym in fact I have been very diligent in telling people not to go there because of my experience. Worst place ever. Did not join because the owner, this review is from last year and from what I’ve heard the owners are still rude.

Anthony”’s mom was RUDE and pushing myself and another couple to join. She took us for a 5 min tour, didn’t show us the locker rooms. Not impressed. Every machine, treadmill is right up against the others. I mentioned that Anthony said to obtain a guest pass that I had spoken to him 2 days earlier and she said they don’t offer it? The other couple said they were referred by friends who go there and said they DID offer a day pass. She literally snapped at them saying how her Anthony would NEVER offer guest passes! Great people skills right there.
The other couple asked where to go and I redirected them towards what is now Retro Fitness and I went to another facility where the people and members are friendly. And offer day passes lol

I am a extremely passionate about health & fitness and have been to just about every gym in Sussex County. With that being said, Alpha is by far the cleanest and most well-equipped gym around. I have been a member for 3 years and counting. The staff and gym members are extremely kind and friendly. You will ALWAYS find Anthony and his staff cleaning, adding equipment, new classes, etc. Their new expansion is beautiful and there is plenty of space. My Alpha family has helped me achieve so many of my fitness goals. I am proud to say I am in the best shape I have EVER been, all thanks to this incredible place. Love you guys!

If you’re from Newton and have experienced other gyms around here you know Alpha is the best gym in the area. Gyms here have come and gone because of lousy equipment, filthy environments, shotty ownership, and not being customer centric. Alpha is the total opposite of that. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (I would probably say the best in jersey ). They have tons of classes of all different sorts and spread out throughout the day. Also, the instructors are amazing- always challenging you and spicing up the workouts. For me, I get bored easily so I have to have diversity as well as morning classes because of my sporadic work schedule (which they fulfill) .Sadly, I moved houses so Alpha is too far from me and am now struggling with the fact that I have to say goodbye.

I don't have a membership, but here is my membership review. The staff initially was friendly and offered me a tour. The facility is 2 floors with an optional out door CrossFit area. Could not get a view of the locker rooms, but the entry was not to appealing. They have a second class room and appear to have tons of classes. They do not have refrigerated items to buy (Protein drinks, water, etc) or a smoothy/specialty drink making bar. The biggest issue I saw was the membership is all or nothing. 35.00/month with a 49.99 sign up fee. They do not offer a Year long membership (Monthly rate only). No family discounts, no drop in one day only memberships, and no way to do a free trial.

**** Here is my member review ****. The staff is very friendly. When I expressed my concerns about joining they said they would try to accommodate me if they could, but ultimately it is a business (Understandable) The gym floor and locker rooms are clean. Since my previous review they stocked the refrigerator. The locker rooms are small and the men's locker room is only 6 lockers (Staff said that they were looking into expanding the lockers in the future). Even though I nitpick, I would say it's the best gym in Newton.

The owner Anthony remains attentive to the members. He always seems to be doing things around the gym. Rarely is there ever a broken piece of equipment as even during peak times you can still get in to use a piece of equipment.

The size of the gym took me by surprise because from the outside it looks small, but it's really 2 floors filled with every type of workout equipment you could imagine. Nice layout, friendly staff, very clean gym and top quality machines. They offer many classes and I have heard that Zumba there is great. They are adding a protein/juice/smoothie bar soon. LOVE IT

Love the owner, love the atmosphere. Everyone is willing to help, members are great, and instructors are friendly. It never really gets crowded and it's a judgement free zone with inspiration on all the walls.

AWESOME GYM, Even better staff. Very clean, heated in winters and very cool in the summer. It has a great variety of equipment for every type of workout and offers great classes, ZUMBA, HipHop, Bootcamps, kickboxing, etc. COME CHECK IT OUT.
