Hudson River Athletics is what every gym should aspire to be! Jay and the other coaches have done a phenomenal job of building an engaging, supportive and vibrant community that pushes its members to achieve their fitness goals, while fostering strong community bonds. This is not a gym where you come in and go through the motions. This is a gym that puts a strong focus on teaching its members how to be better and more complete athletes, while doing so in a really engaging way. I highly encourage anyone who is looking to try CrossFit or Hyrox to give "The Riv" a shot. You won't regret it.

I was a member here for 6 years. This was by far the best gym I’ve trained at. The coaches prioritized proper technique and took the time to teach, not just instruct. The community was strong and supportive without being too performative. Most of the workouts are very fun. Since moving, I haven’t found another gym that measures up in quality or atmosphere.

Unfortunately, Hudson River Athletics was a big letdown. The membership rates are outrageously overpriced for what you actually get—most of the equipment is outdated and worn down, and the programming lacks creativity or variety. It feels like the same workouts recycled over and over.

The community vibe is cold and unwelcoming. It’s very cliquey, and if you’re new or younger, don’t expect to feel included. The majority of members are 35+ and there’s no energy, no sense of youth or motivation in the space. It honestly felt more draining than inspiring.

To top it off, the owner comes off as arrogant and disingenuous, which only adds to the uncomfortable atmosphere. There are way better gyms in the area that offer more value, better equipment, and a much more inclusive culture such as Crossfit Hoboken and Union City Crossfit.

Phenomenal spot regardless of your fitness level. Coaches are patient and encouraging, and workouts are routinely fresh and high quality. The owner, Jay was super receptive to my starting point when I joined and set me up for success from the jump. Couldn’t recommend Hudson River Athletics more!

When I walked into Hudson River Athletics 8 years ago, I didn’t know how much of an impact on my life it would have. Fast forward many years, Hudson River athletics has provided me with an amazing community of so many incredible people in Hoboken.
In addition, their programming is top notch, blending a great mix of strength, gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning. The class sizes allow more attention from the coaches who pay attention to form, and ensure you don’t do too much too quickly. Couldn’t recommend more

Hudson River Athletics (HRA) is amazing. The coaches helped me lose 60 pounds and completely transform my body. At 38 years old, I am in the best shape of my life, except for maybe that one season I ran cross country in high school. Before joining HRA I had honestly forgotten what feeling fit was like. It had been years since I took my fitness seriously. I thought it was fine to be out of breath walking up the stairs and to feel tired a lot of the time. Not anymore. Now, I feel better overall and I have more energy. I look forward to every opportunity that I have to get into HRA to workout. The coaches are fantastic. It’s easy, all you have to do is show up and you will see results. I don’t have enough good things to say about Jay and his staff.

Actually speaking, I’m not a sportsman at all, but according to some health problem, I visit gym. You know, I’ve chosen Hudson River Athletics, because of its comfortable location, professional trainers and schedule. The gym is opened from early morning (6:15 a/m), you just could do sport and then go to your job. After one visit I’ve bought an abonnement for 3 months. Very calm atmosphere, - all you need after a bad and hard day. I met there very cool people.

I'm very particular about programming that is purposeful and very thought out. Compared to the other CrossFit gym in Hoboken, this place is definitely the best. The community is by far the most lively and accepting, and the training is superb. Would recommend 100% for anyone who is interested in CrossFit.

I've been to countless CrossFit gyms around the country and this hands down stands above all others. The community is so warming & clicky. Great mix of people of all skill types. The programming & regiment is challenging & focused on growth and most importantly safety. Excellent coaching. Excellent community. Excellent gym.

HRCF has become a home away from home for many, dogs included. Great camaraderie between all the members and coaches, with numerous outside events always taking place. Coaches are well knowledged and trained in their trade. Most importantly, proper technique always stressed along with improving ones mobility. Classes kept small to give one as much personal attention as possible.

Being a member since HRCF's inception, have gotten stronger, leaner and faster in many aspects but still a work in progress in others. It helps having the communities support behind you 100% to reach that next level, be it a personal best or the encouragement to get through a WOD. No other gym experience compares.

HRCF is great! The knowledgeable and friendly coaches keep the workouts fun and ever-changing, and the competitive atmosphere helps you get the most out of your workouts. Even better, this gym is good for everyone, irrespective of your ability level. Workouts feature many scaling options so fear not if you are new to crossfit, like I was a year ago. HRCF helped get me out of my boring repetitive gym routine and into something challenging and effective that I look forward to each night.

I moved to Hoboken from DC and my roommate convinced me to come try HRCF, I had never done CrossFit before. The vibe is very welcoming to new members, the coaches are all excellent, engaging, and well-informed. The programming is excellent and I love that they have late night classes during the week (7:15 PM and 8:15 PM), otherwise I wouldn't be able to make it. HRCF is so much better than doing a mundane workout at a regular gym.

HRCF is top notch! I have been a member at HRCF for about 6 months. From day 1, I always felt welcome and comfortable at this gym. I had never tried CrossFit until I walked into HRCF, I wanted to try a new type of workout. At HRCF, the coaches, staff and culture is like no other. Everyone is very welcoming, from the staff to my fellow members. Take a trial class to see if you like it! The coaches really take the time to make sure you are executing every technique properly. The workouts are effective and efficient, you will always walk out of HRCF knowing that you just had an amazing & challenging workout. I highly recommend HRCF!!

Can't say enough about this gym, especially the coaches and members. I've never received so much 1:1 attention from coaches/trainers. However, its not just about the amount of attention I get from them, but the quality of their feedback which is extremely specific and clearly tailored to my progress. In addition, the members here are the best. The gym is too small/civilized for cliques so everyone is cool with everyone from the newest member to the most experienced athlete. I also love that members are constantly socializing outside the gym from hiking, skiing, trips into the city, etc. making my crossfit experience more than just a gym.

Joining HRCF has been one of the best decision I have ever made. Prior to joining, I was just plain burned out from running on the treadmill and lifting free weights at the gym. I had also reached a plateau in my fitness level. Basically, I was seriously uninspired by my overall fitness routine. After doing some research, I decided to try Crossfit to shake up that routine. Going in, I was fairly nervous and intimidated by what I read about the hard-core Crossfit "WODs". I didn't think I would stack up and I was worried I might injure myself.

Thanks to the amazing knowledge and support of the HRCF coaches, I had nothing to fear. While they definitely push you to work to your potential, they never throw you in over your head. If you are a newbie, they will provide you with extra help and attention. Workouts can always be scaled so you will never be faced with doing the exact same WOD as a veteran cross fitter. Even if you have been at if for a while, their dedication to reminding you of proper form and technique is key to staying healthy and injury free. I simply cannot say enough about how impressed I am by all of the coaches. Not only that, but I have never ever once been bored in class! There simply isn't time. If you want to get fit, learn technique, skills and training you can take with you anywhere, meet new people and actually look forward to working out...then HRCF is the place you need to be.

Cannot say enough, such an incredible box!!! I have worked out at several boxes over the years and this one won me over immediately. You could not ask for more passionate and caring coaches. From the moment my wife and I walked in we felt comfortable and relaxed, so much so that we bring our 9 month daughter with us every time we come. What is more surprising and rare is that they actually play with her and encourage us to bring her with us to ensure we get the best workout possible! The programing is intentional and well thought out and really pushes us to our limits physically and mentally. Love these guys - see ya tomorrow!

The workouts are challenging and rewarding and the coaches cannot be beat. They not only care about your form and physical health but care about you as a person as well. I have a back problem and the coaching staff is always conscientious of it and working with me to scale exercises so that I do not re-injure myself. They have a wonderful community, with pot luck dinners, nutritional challenges throughout the year, social evenings out, and a CSA program with vegetables that cannot compare to anything else in town. This gym has become a home away from home for me. I moved out to Hoboken from Denver, CO and was extremely homesick my first couple of months in Hoboken. HRCF opened up and I joined hoping to make some new friends and get fit (because let's face it, we all push ourselves harder when we are part of a team). This gym has exceeded any expectations I had. I'm stronger than I've ever been (and I was a competitive swimmer for 16 years), and I've made life-long friends. I'm continually impressed by the progress of not only myself but everyone around me. I love my coaches (shout out to Ash and Jay!!) and I love my fellow crossfitters. You guys have truly made this country girl feel more at home in the big city. I absolutely LOVE this gym.

I had grown tired of going through the motions in the gym and was looking for a workout regimen that was challenging and would deliver the results that my daily workout was missing. I signed up with Hudson River after seeing many of the gains my friends already in Crossfit were seeing. I have been a member ever since. And I have to say, having been a previous Division IA athlete, I have worked with a lot of great coaches. The group of coaches at Hudson River led by Jay Wein, Joe Bags, and Ash Amirsolyemani stack up there right with them. They know their stuff, they care about the members, and they genuinely want to see the members get in the best shape of their life. Not sure I could work out without these guys daily and the team at Hudson River.

Background: Competitive soccer player, runner, standard gym, and endurance races

As a life long athlete and lover all sports, I found my early 30's a disappointing experience in the context of my former athletic prowess. My natural speed was declining, the amount of time I use to spend at the gym seemed to no longer exist, and I found myself getting injured more frequently.

Realizing that I needed a change I decided to check out crossfit. I have no background in Oly (Olympic lifting), and was initially very hesitant about doing these types of movements, but I checked out every Crossfit Box in Hoboken and in NYC (Manhattan), looking for the right balance of dedicate and knowledgeable coaches, a challenging and healthy competitive environment, and a community of people that support each other to aim higher and achieve more. I ended up choosing Hudson River Crossfit (HRCF), and couldn't have asked for a better experience. I am now the strongest I have ever been, I sleep better, have more energy, am more flexible, and have met so many incredible and inspiring people.

No matter how strong you are or what level of athleticism you have, if you come with passion and are willing to put in the work to challenge yourself, you will find yourself right at home at HRCF. The door is always open (normally with a dog or someone’s kid standing in it), so if your looking to check out Crossfit, you should absolutely choose HRCF.

Hudson River Crossfit is by far the best crossfit gym, any gym for that matter, that I've ever been part of. Form the coaching, to the classes, to the community, everything is incredible. I joined about a year and a half ago and have since lost around 40 pounds and have made serious improvements in all of the movements and how much I can lift. I've never been more motivated to go to the gym every day to see the people that have helped me reach some of my personal goals. HRCF is truly a family, I've never walked into the gym and not been greeted by another member or a coach. I think about the day I have to leave Hoboken (Hopefully in the distant future) and I dread having to leave my HRCF family

This box has a fantastic vibe and welcoming atmosphere. The coaches are not only knowledgable, but personable and genuinely care about every members progression and growth. Challenging programing for ALL levels of fitness, and more importantly a Crossfit community that will have you wanting to come in EVERY single day, not only to get a killer workout, but to also hangout after classes and see friends. Ability (and encouragement from staff) for members to come in outside of class times and work on weaknesses is my FAVORITE part about this gym. The coaches consistently offer genuine help and plans for individual progression if requested, no matter what level. The owner John is very fair, responsive, and involved in the community consistently looking to progress it as crossfit evolves, and keep Hudson River as happy and strong as possible.

Not sure where to begin!

I joined HRCF last August after moving to Hoboken from the city. As a burnt out distance runner, I wanted to switch it up so I tried out another gym in town for a month, and the fit didn't feel right so I made the switch to HRCF.

On my first class, I was immediately greeted by the owner and two coaches and introduced to the entire class with a hand shake and introduction from each member in my class! Now that it has been a year, I really can't believe how far I have come.

Coaching - each coach has multiple years of crossfit experience as well as fitness training outside of the crossfit style. They each add their own experiences into their coaching and continuing to push me everyday. They also help suggest movements that are your weaker points to practice outside of class so you can come back and kill it next time! I mean, they really are awesome. I don't know what else to say. Also, one thing that they don't do, which I think women appreciate is give the box a "good ol boys" club feel. Women and men are definitely treated equally here.

Community - I mean, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer, more welcoming, close knit crossfit box community than the one at HRCF. Maybe it's because on the self selecting consequence of Crossfit in general, but everyone you encounter at the gym is more friendly, interesting, relatable and engaging than the next. I have made friends here that I trust will be life long ones! Needless to say, the community here is thee best.

Facility - Because the space is on the smaller side, the class size is forced to be limited to a smaller number than most other boxes. The consequence of this becomes more one-on-one personal coaching time with two coaches on the floor at all times. As I get more advanced, I find myself wishing for some more space to practice on my own, but I find spaces to make it work!

Programming - the programming is structured in a part A/ part B format.
* Part A is dedicated to weight training, where members have 15 minutes to focus on a certain skill. This is personally my favorite part of class where I can work on tweaking different aspects of my core lifts, including my favorite, Olympic lifts. Coaches help drill your weak points while critiquing your overall progress throughout the 15 minutes. It's the best!
* Part B is a metabolic conditioning workout that often incorporates the lift that was highlighted in part A. this is a nice way to see your hard work in part A reinforced in part B. Levels of difficulty for all levels of fitness, beginner, intermediate and advanced are highlights and coaches encourage you to go with what feels right for you. I appreciate this as opposed to having members feel inferior if they can't "RX" the workout. We are all in this together and I think everyone feels accomplished at the end of the class, regardless of the level they chose to go with.

Price - a little steep but competitive with other boxes in town

All in all, if you are looking to get fit and strong while having a blast while doing it and gaining some new stellar friends along the way, HRCF is the place to be!

Great gym. I chose this Crossfit because they had some of the best hours ranging until their last class at 8:15 pm which is really rare for a box to go that late but it's great because I usually can't get there any earlier. The coaches are great too, they have a ton of experience but also really excel at helping newcomers and being friendly to everyone. The price is a little steep but it's Hoboken so it's competitive with other boxes in the area. All the need to add is later weekend open gym to get 6 stars in my book!

I've been a member at Hudson River CrossFit since the start of July 2014 and it has had the biggest, most amazing positive impact on my life here in Hoboken! I'd been living here for about 4 months, struggling to get into a good healthy routine and really missing the type of exercise I used to get as a competitive dancer for 16 years growing up.

Once I heard about HRCF and did a little research, I realized the fun classes, tough training, camaraderie, and individual attention they promoted were exactly what I missed most. I signed up not only without any personal connections to the gym, but to crossfit at all & it was a whole new world for me. I learned so much so quickly from a number of different coaches - all amazingly passionate people who genuinely want to see each member exceed their personal fitness goals, grow and learn more about their bodies, and improve their overall lifestyle.

These classes might look intimidating at first, and they will undoubtedly kick your ass... but you WILL get through every single one. And the best part is you'll be doing it with a team - soon to become some of your closest friends :)

I started working out with the owner, John, at his weekly free workouts in the park (while his gym was under construction). It seems this box is smaller than others, but what that means is smaller class sizes and more personal attention from the coaches. All of them are outstanding and make sure that you are performing he WODs correctly and at your max potential. I can say that in the month and a half that I've been at HRCF that my body has changed and I have been able to perform better.

The camaraderie and family atmosphere is remarkable. We are really in this adventure together. I'm so glad I joined and highly recommend it to anyone considering.

I've been a member at HRCF since the day it opened. At first I was intimidated to try, but the coaches and members are so welcoming and motivating. This place has changed my lifestyle (and my body) The changing workouts never get boring, and the small class sizes allow for personal attention everytime. I love it!

I’ve done crossfit at a number of gyms, and HRCF is my favorite one yet. The classes are competitive without being over-the-top and well attended without seeming packed. The best thing is its great energy and knowledgeable coaches. The WODs are always intense, but that’s what I go there for, and the camaraderie and coaches make it worth the sweat.
