I walked into LA Fitness just to try the gym out, since they advertise free passes. But when I got there, a woman named Karen told me I either had to leave a 5-star Google review or pay $20 to get in. That’s absolutely ridiculous. Basically, if you give them 5 stars, you get in for free — which means all these “great” reviews are completely fake. Super shady business practice. Definitely not coming back

Today, September 16th at 8:30 a.m., after my workout at Fitness Howell, I went to the men’s restroom and encountered several unacceptable conditions: there was no soap in any of the dispensers, no toilet paper, and to top it off, the shower I chose smelled bad and had mold. I urge the management to take immediate action to improve the hygiene and maintenance of these facilities.

I moved from North Jersey and was looking for a new home gym. The crew here is very nice and helpful and thankfully, most of their equipments are functioning (unlike many gyms i’ve been to that have their machines “out of service”!). I really enjoyed my first experience at LA Fitness! The workers were incredibly patient with me even though my canadian credit card was declining. They even let me use the facilties for free this time! All the machines were in great condition, the basketball court was awesome, and the bathrooms and showers were actually clean! The Howell LA Fitness does a great job of keeping the facilities clean and are quick to help whenever you ask questions at the front desk. I had a frightening experience at this gym that no paying member should ever go through. While working out in a trainer-approved area, I was aggressively confronted by a male maintenance worker who screamed at me, demanding, “What are you doing in here?” His tone, clenched fists, and overall menacing behavior made me feel physically threatened — as if I didn’t belong there. It was humiliating, hostile, and completely inappropriate.

When I reported it to the manager Karen, she was cold and dismissive, offering zero support or accountability. Now they’re telling me I have to complete my training sessions at another location, where this same man may still be working. I’ve made it clear: I do not feel safe and will never return to this gym.

This brand claims to be a “premier” fitness club, but they have no regard for the safety of their female members, especially women of color. Their handling of this situation was unacceptable on every level.

Ladies, think twice before joining. Your money is better spent somewhere that values your safety, voice, and presence.

My experience at LA Fitness has been nothing short of disappointing. The gym is consistently dirty, machines are often broken for weeks, and the staff seems to care very little about addressing members’ concerns.

The biggest issue, however, is Karen, the general manager. She is by far the most unprofessional and rude person I’ve dealt with at any gym. Instead of resolving issues or listening to feedback, she’s dismissive, condescending, and treats members like they’re an inconvenience. Her attitude sets the tone for the entire facility — unwelcoming and unhelpful.

Save your money and sanity. There are far better gyms with competent management and clean, functional equipment.

If I didn’t get a discounted membership, I would never return. Place is filthy with dust, wads of gum stuck in between the weights from the kids that frequent the place and filthy mirrors full of handprints and dirt. Pins missing from numerous machines and machines out of order for 6 plus months. Management changes every couple of months and they are more concerned about whining that you placed your jacket on a chair than actually improving the gym. If Retro wasn’t the size of my bathroom, I would be there in a heartbeat as their class selection alone blows this place away. For about 3 moths, there were 0 yoga mats in the entire place. If you’re a female, you could be wearing a burka and will still have your handful of regular gym creeps who are clearly there to window shop the women, put their numerous dumbbells all over multiple machines they are not using and socialize vs actually work out. All of the fake “5” star reviews are comical.

The facility itself Is fine. Average gym in terms of machines and amenities. However, the guest pass system at this LA Fitness is extremely predatory. On their website and through the guest pass generator on the LA fitness app, a free VIP guest pass is advertised. Upon walking in and trying to use the guest pass for a friend of mine who had never been to the gym before, he was told that because he wasn’t certain about wanting to maintain his membership beyond the trial period, he was told he would not be able to use the guest pass after driving from over 1 hour away to play basketball. Instead, the elder lady at the front desk who seemed to be a manager or head sales person insisted that he purchase a 1 day membership for $20 rather than accepting the valid guest pass. She also admitted that the reason she was not willing to grant the guest trial period was because she didn’t see future membership value in my friend, as he was being honest with her and told her he was really looking to take advantage of the free trial period. She even admitted she did not want to go through the process of drawing up the paperwork if he was not interested in maintaining a long term membership, which is not what is advertised on the guest pass. This is a predatory system ran by this LA Fitness, as they advertise a free guest experience all over the guest pass and website, but issue restrictions when you actually arrive and force you to purchase a one day membership rather than honoring the free guest experience. When I confronted the sales lady and explained to her what said was describing a predatory process that advertises a free service, but forces you to pay a fee for the day pass when it’s not honored upon arrival, she had the audacity to tell me “When you put it like that, it sounds terrible.” There was no other way to describe the matter, and she knew it, but was trying her hardest to save face, siting similar services like Netflix as an acceptable comparison. She tried to tell me it’s like Netflix where u sign up for a trial that auto renews into a membership, to which I responded, “you can still cancel Netflix after the free trial period ends.” To this she had no decent response and insisted that she would not honor the advertised guest agreement. This location lures you in with the advertisement of a free pass, and then has the audacity to deny you if you are honest with them, and they deem u as a low value non-long term customer. The only reason we even stayed was because my friend had already drove from an hour away. Keep in mind, guest passes have previously been accepted in my previous visits as the location, as this predatory policy is not adhered to by most of the younger front desk associates, who seemed to have no idea what this elder sales lady was talking about. This shows to how this so called “company policy” is selectively applied based on how much the employee cares and possibly even dependent on who the person coming in is. The holmdel location is far better and does not take these predatory steps to enhance their commissions and make a quick buck off their members and guests trying to use their gym. I will only be going to Holmdel from now on. If anyone from management wants to reach out to discuss what occurred I would be happy to talk and share my experience, as this type of selective application of policy and predatory advertisement should never happen. Do not recommend this place, especially if you plan to bring a guest for the supposedly free trial period. My name on my membership is Rohan Agnihotri. This gym is the perfect place to stop when you are travelling, especially if you want to arrive fresh. You can work out a little bit, and because it's not your home gym, no one will remark about how bad you are doing. Then you can take a shower, sit in the hot tub and think about what a fine day it is! If you want to rent a hotel just so you could take a shower, it would cost one hundred dollars at least. So clearly, this is the very best option for a traveller.

Currently missing a lot of equipment, over half the cable machines are missing pins and hooks that are essential to be used. Half a yoga mat left (all ripped up). Always crowded. There's no policy for amount of people per machine which created crowds when people come in a big group. The hand sanitary and soup on the bathroom are always empty. Machines are dusty. It's just awful. It's like they don't care at all.

This the most most filthy gym I've ever used. There is always trash on the floor and dust piles under all of the equipment that has accumulated for years.
The equipment is also very repetitive and so lacks other equipment for different muscle groups and exercises.
The only reason I use this gym is for location. I'm sure if they don't improve then another gym will open near by and do it better.

Update: 02/04/25 - They still don't care. If you want a good workout with good equipment, bring your own! They don't maintain, update or fix broken equipment much or timely. They still did not change any pictures on the wall to reflect their actual membership. People still don't follow normal gym rules like putting away their plates & dumbbells; leaving it for ederly or women to try and move it. And yet, I'm still here only because of the size of the gym.

I wrote a letter to LA Fitness of Howell Mangement hoping to get some sort of reply. Its been some 30 days and they did not respond. As a result, I will post my constructive feedback here.

I have been a member of LA Fitness for maybe a 1 ½ years. I am a transplant from Retro Fitness of Howell. The reason I left Retro is because their gym is way too small for all the people who subscribe to it. Since I am now retired, I joined your gym because of the space and pool access. Other than that, I would still be at Retro. I have some constructive criticisms and I hope you will take it to account.
There are many reasons I loved Retro, but a few stand out. First is they are right around the corner and easy to get to for when I worked. Second is, they continuously requested customer feedback on how they were doing and actually used it when it was good feedback. And lastly, they ensured gym goers followed rules by posting signs and monitoring people. You are not close (not that this is a problem now), you do not ask for customer feedback, and you do not enforce or post gym rules where they are noticeable, at least not to what I’ve seen. So, here are some constructive criticisms I hope you will ponder and maybe even implement:
1. Send out emails to get customer feedback – I get it, people are different these days and you may end up getting a lot of non-serious feedback. However, that can be sorted and discarded, and you can really consider serious feedback. For instance, if you had a monthly or bi-annual feedback process you would know that there is an infestation of lady bugs in your gym.
2. Post signs of gym rules such as wiping down equipment and removing weights off equipment and returning them to their racks. I have had to move heavy weights from equipment because many inconsiderate males do not. Since it is heavy, I do not put it back on the rack, I leave it on the floor by the equipment. I have also seen small females having difficulty removing heavy weights as well. Posting signs may help as it may shame some people into following gym etiquette. Monitoring on occasion certainly helps.
3. You really should have more than one piece of gym accessory equipment like bosu balls, weighted bars, etc. It appears to me, for some strange reason, the accessory equipment like bosu balls and weighted bars are only in the Training Room, indicating that equipment is not for use for the general gym population. I was even told to bring the bosu ball back to the Training Room when done, that’s ridiculous. You are a franchise gym, you really should have more than one of any gym workout accessories; Retro (a small gym compared to yours) had several of each, including bands.
4. Finally, your walls imply that only slim, white people workout. Please do not take this as me making a race issue of this. I’m African American and I workout at your gym as well as countless other African Americans, Asians, etc. However, this is not reflective of what’s on the walls at your gym. The proof in the pudding is that you only have a different race on the walls in the basketball Room, can you guess the race?? Reconsider adding different ethnicity just for inclusion purposes.
5. I provided you my contact information in the letter I sent you and you are still welcomed to contact me if you feel the need.

The people here are so nice. I love seeing the same friendly faces every day. Plenty of equipment to use. I do wish that the classes had more participants and better instructors. This is the reason I don’t take them. I also wish there were a yoga class available. If you are good at leading your own workout, this is a great place to go. And the price is certainly right!

Great fitness center! LA has a diverse range of well-maintained equipment, clean facilities, convenient location, flexible hours, a variety of classes, supportive staff, a welcoming community atmosphere, personal training options, and a price point that fits your budget, allowing you to achieve your fitness goals comfortably and effectively! Not the cleanest gym around, and good luck getting a machine or a spot at the weight rack during busy hours. Also they make cancelation more difficult than it needs to be.

Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming. They do not pressure anything on you. Especially Karen she has been a great help with getting me into the gym and knowledge of all the amenities and services they provide. This gym is amazing. The equipments are clean and so are the restrooms and locker rooms. Highly recommend.
