Terrible management. Had an issue and the manager wouldn't even listen to what I was saying. I was 100% correct about the situation and in the end instead of apologizing he tried to make it seem like I was at fault because he has to trust his staff over facts. Never going back. The facilities themselves are nice and the location is great, but I was very disappointed at how the situation was handled and signed up for LA fitness instead. I'd rather drive 10 extra minutes than give my money to this business.

If you're a beginner who feels nervous about the gym, I'd suggest avoiding this place. The gym doesn't have any cameras, so if you get bullied by others, the staff will just tell you, "no camera, nothing we can do." I was pushed aside, my bag got kicked simply because this guy wanted my machine, and intimidated by other people multiple times. When the staff came, they just told me to keep working out because there's nothing they can do. Surprised there're not similar reviews, they might hide them already so be cautious.

Paul Serra -- Great Trainer, Great Person

I first started working out with Paul around 3 years ago. It was random happenstance that the gym assigned me to him for my fitness orientation and I couldn't be more fortunate for that happening. I've worked with several trainers over the past 15 years and while I've had some success here or there, it never stuck long term, particularly when I had to switch gyms or cease training. Paul was immediately different. I could tell just by the fact that we discussed at length my fitness history and goals over the phone prior to my first session that he would be a far more involved trainer than what I'm used to.

First, Paul customizes all of his clients' diets to achieve whatever goal they are aiming for and constantly revises the plan to keep moving toward that goal. This is at no extra cost to the customer beyond the gym's charge for personal training. Training alone is not going to transform your physique and Paul knows that--and he is sensitive to whatever challenges this may present. For instance, I work a lot, at an office, and I don't have time to cook every meal. He customized a diet plan for me that incorporates eating lunch out when I'm at the office. Second, Paul is INVOLVED. He will keep regular communication with his clients even when they're not in the gym to make sure they are sticking to their plan. This includes providing a workout plan for workouts that aren't with him. It is incredibly powerful to have someone checking in and investing their own personal time in your success. It makes all the difference. Third, Paul cares. Paul is a deeply caring person in a way that goes beyond the typical business/customer relationship of personal training--his clients are not just clients, but friends, and your success is equally as important to him as it is you.

In the end, I was able to lose 25-30 lbs in a little over 6 months after starting training with Paul. I didn't have to do all of the workouts I've dreaded in the past like HIIT or endless cardio. It was all custom tailored to how I enjoy working out. I transformed fat into muscle and dropped over 10% of my body fat. Unlike with other programs, trainers, or simply trying to figure it out on my own, I've been able to get real results and keep them long term.

I want to share my experience with trainer Paul Serra and the nysc gym

The gym is acceptable on all fronts. Front desk staff is always friendly and trainers helpful and encouraging. Plenty of cardio machines so you don’t have to wait even during the busy times. The only times you have issues getting on the weight training equipment is during the high traffic periods but that’s to be expected at every gym. People are generally cooperative and work together. I’ve only used the showers a few times but bathrooms/locker rooms are always clean.

When I first joined I wasn’t looking for a trainer but after a conversation with coach Pauly I took advantage of the free session and things just clicked. I’m middle aged and off the couch after many years so I needed the help getting going again. Working with Paul Serra has been both encouraging and motivating. The help for me has come in the form of consistency, technique and variations in workouts. I’ve dealt with different aches and pains and age related injuries and coach Pauly has worked hard to switch things up to keep me going while working around those physical limitations. When heathy he’s always mixing things up and throwing new exercises and workouts my way to keep it fun and interesting.

Two biggest things for me with Pauly has been never feeling alone - it’s always “we” are going to do this or “we” are going to be doing 10 pull ups next month and never “you” are. And the other thing is sense of community or “team” if you will. I have been introduced to so many people and everyone really cares about each other and are happy to see each other.

In the 10 months with Pauly in down 50 pounds and moving more weight then in my 20s.

Coach Paul Serra is BEST IN CLASS. I liked him the moment I met him when he greeted me with a huge smile, and after completing my initial MCI assessment I signed up to train with him three times a week. A year later, we are still going and he trains my teenage son now as well. Coach Pauly’s approach is so caring and professional and impacts his clients’ lives beyond just their fitness. He is a positive role model for my son both in and out of the gym. Pauly’s background is in bodybuilding and boxing but he does not have a one-size-fits-all approach. He adapts to each client’s needs and every session is different. He has a wealth of experience and is able to adapt and modify any session on the fly. Whether we’re doing HIIT, cardio, or weightlifting he knows exactly how to push me while always keeping training fun.

Paul Serra has helped both my son and me achieve incredible fitness results and he continues to keep us motivated week after week. I recommend Coach Pauly without hesitation to all my friends and family and feel lucky to be working with such a high quality trainer and person.

I started with my trainer, Paul Serra, a year out from my wedding and he helped get me out of my funk and motivate me to see again how great it is to be healthy!
I’m a former college lacrosse player who developed some bad habits after my playing career was over. I let myself go and ballooned up to a weight I never imagined I could be.
Coach Pauly has tailored my workouts to what he thinks works for me and is constantly changing it up week after week. Although I only workout with him once a week, he still holds me accountable with regular check ins. He’s that extra little motivation that I’ve been missing to help get me back on track.
Nine months later and I’m down 30 lbs. I’ve even PR’ed some of my lifts and am able to do a pull up again!

They only let you cancel personal training if you give at least six days’ notice. Since I gave my notice the same day, they charged me anyway. The only way I was able to get my 400$ personal training month’s payment back was by going to a doctor and providing paperwork—they wouldn’t accept my word that I couldn’t continue for health reasons. On top of that, the trainer wasn’t tailoring the workouts to my needs, like bad posture, it was generic, probably more suited for male body types, plus no posture correction focus.

Gym overall is decent. Good variety of equipment.

However the only reason I stick with this gym is Personal Training with PAUL SERRA. I was pretty clueless training on my own. But then I met Pauly and one complementary session turned into 2 years of an incredibly rewarding fitness journey.

After retiring I knew building muscle, getting lean, and building strength were key to a longer healthy life.

Pauly took me on a journey of nutrition/ macros specifically designed for me; as well as designing a workout program that returned results well beyond my expectations.

This is a review for the personal trainer Paul Serra (this is not a review for NYSC Hoboken). Pauly gets 5 stars. I have been training with Pauly for over a year at the NYSC in Hoboken.

Pauly is the first personal trainer I’ve ever had so I cannot compare him with other service providers. I have been able to introduce exercise in my life through the continuous and extraneous work I have been doing with Pauly. He has met me at the fitness level I was and has worked with me to build it up. He is always prompt and communicates with his clients efficiently about scheduling, diet, and exercise plans.

Pauly’s strength lies in his knowledge of fitness and wellness, and his active involvement in pushing his clients to elevate their fitness levels. I consider personal training dependent upon the trainer and the trainee, as such, Pauly’s clients may have different experiences with him. I am working on pushing myself further and trust that Pauly will be as invested as I am in my fitness goals.

Since this is an expensive service, albeit fairly priced, I advise to be aware that fitness work requires consistency. I would recommend Pauly as a personal trainer because of his experience working with clients of different age groups and fitness levels, and for having been exigent and kind with me throughout this process.

I give it 5/5 specifically because of the personal training. I've been working with Coach Pauly for a year. I had no weight training experience and was nervous when I started. Coach Pauly took time to understand my goals and motivation. He helped me feel comfortable and taught me the correct form in a safe environment. Now I can successfully weight train multiple days a week and am confident in my ability on my own.

Coach Pauly goes above and beyond by taking the time to develop work out plans that I can do on days we don’t have a training session. He adds lots of variety to the workouts to keep things fresh and advises on diet for overall results.

I’ve been training with Paul at NYSC for the past three months, and it’s been great! At our first session, he talked with me about my goals and made sure to take into account that I’m a distance runner who is looking to add in full body strengthening into my routine. His approach feels individualized and even noticed an imbalance I have on one side and has given me multiple single-arm exercises to work on this. Since then, he’s taught me a variety of exercises that focus on different areas at each session and has focused on form on the ones that I’ve already learned with him. Gym is decent, definitely not anything too special. Weight section and layout is mediocre. Every week there is a new broken machine, not sure if it’s because they decided to “upgrade” their machines to nautilus. The worst part of the gym has to be the gym goers. The usuals that you see everyday are unbearable and same with a couple of the trainers (you’ll know who they are). Some have a superiority complex where they’ll take up two machines or leave a machine for 10 minutes to talk during busy hours. Just a lack of respect by most of these people

After training with Chase for the past few months, I wanted to update my review. I initially sought out personal training with Chase to get in shape for my wedding at the end of December 2024. He not only got me into shape and helped me build strength and stamina to dance the night away on my big day but also gave me a huge confidence boost.

Having never stepped foot in a gym before, I was nervous at first, but Chase made the experience so easy and comfortable. On top of that, he was a great listener and a supportive confidante for all my wedding planning stress!

My original plan was to finish training after the wedding, but I quickly realized how much I would miss our sessions—not just for the progress I was making but also for the friendship we’ve built. I highly recommend working with Chase, especially if you’re getting married and want to feel your absolute best on your big day!

I don’t know when the reviews are poor. I started going here a month ago. Gym gets a bit crowded but they have a good amount of space. Things are clean, and they have a lot of machines and options for free weights. Wish they had a lateral raise machine, and pendulum squat but they have pretty much everything you’ll need.

Terrible Staff- When I first signed up everyone was kind and nice, only to find out the information that had been giving us has been false and not true at all.
Terrible Manager- When I was trying to clear things up with the manager, the minute I got on the phone he had an attitude and chose to disregard everything we said. He was very rude and did not even try to understand the situation. Definitely need a new General Manager because whoever the GM was is not a people person at all.
Overly Subscribed- This place is way too packed and way too small. Around 5pm-9pm there is a horde of people at every machine/bench. It is almost impossible to get a workout done because of how many people are occupying a single machine.

DO NOT COME HERE. Went in to check out the gym and was told the student monthly is 45/month + tax and was NON-Renewable. It’s now the next month and my account has already been charged(keep in mind I was told it was non renewable). I call them up and ask why it’s happened the GM was rude and came at me with an attitude and told me that I was in the wrong but I was clearly told by one of the employees that showed me around it was 45/month non renewable. The gym needs work. Machines that have broken were never replaced (pec deck, t bar row, etc). There’s potential to make this a nice NYSC location but the club has declined over the years and management doesn’t seem to care. It’s a shame. Has what you need for the most part and the location is close so I deal with it. If there was another option nearby I would switch. They recently increased the monthly fees claiming it was to maintain the gym but I don’t see any improvements being made. Next hike and I will probably cancel.

I’ll be cancelling my membership soon. Not the best experience. Don’t get me wrong, the staff is friendly and the gym is relatively clean. My problem with this location is that it does not have sufficient equipment available during peak hours (5pm-9pm) which is the only time I can work out. Normally, I’ve only experienced this in January or at really tiny gyms. This gym is oversubscribed. They really need to expand.

Chase is the best! I’ve been training with him for 2 years now and he constantly pushes me to maximize my potential and be my strongest self. I struggle with lower back pain and he is always mindful before and throughout our sessions. He alters workouts to my needs both in person and on the app for when I do my “shy girl” workouts alone. Writing here to review, thank and recommend Aris Martinez, for personal training at the Hoboken North club. I have been training for 3 years consistently with Aris. I have lost 60 pounds and have been able to successfully maintain it. Aris' training has been great for both my physical and mental health. I would strongly encourage to connect with him and kick off your fitness journey. He is a good person, personable and hard working. I have had experience with trainers previously who would end a session in 45/50 minutes (after having started late) but Aris gives you attention the full hour.
He goes the extra mile to help and even tracks the effort each session on an iPad. I was lazy, unmotivated and never looked forward to any gym session in the past 5/6 years, prior to joining, but Aris has been flexible, dedicated, determined, helps you realize you have potential, changes workouts to ones you like and this has helped me change my attitude towards my workouts. He works hard to keep me motivated when I want to hardly work and says I can when I say I can't and I appreciate that.

I trained with Chase Cruz for 6 years, and he had a profound impact on my life. For years we focused on strength training, and I went from a flabby 200 pounds to a muscular 175 (20 pullups lets GO!)...he helped me achieve all my goals and I can't thank him enough for it...but that was only the beginning of our fitness journey together.

When I turned 31 years old, I was struck with a debilitating flareup of a genetic autoimmune disease. The resulting joint inflammation would make this the worst year of my life, as the pain would force me onto a walker like a man triple my own age. In those dark days, Chase was there for me. In conjunction with recommendations from my rheumatologist, Chase came up with a custom rehabilitation program to help limber up my painfully stiff joints each morning. He helped me feel human again. I'm not sure if he knows how important that was for me...but I will never forget.

I’ve been a member for about 2 years now and think it is one of the better NYSC locations I’ve worked out at in terms of working equipment, crowdedness and customer service from every single trainer/staff I’ve interacted with.

The best part of this gym is Chase, one of their personal trainers. Over the last year, Chase would randomly offer form corrections during my workouts which was mega helpful. About 3 months ago we started training together and he is the best personal trainer I’ve ever had. He pushes you beyond what you thought you can handle, he is 100% committed to your goals and checks in with you outside of sessions, he evaluates your nutrition and gives recommendations for improvements, his schedule is flexible and he always has gummy bears. What more can you ask for? Ultimately it’s about the results. I can confidently say that his training has me in the best shape I’ve ever been in, having gained noticeable muscle definition and lost body fat.

The only criticism I have for this location is that the facility could be cleaner, especially the studios and free weight area.
