If I could give zero stars I would. I cancelled back in late November due to them raising my prices without any notice. I was told the cancellation would be final after 45 days.

After 45 days I was charged again for the monthly fee. After speaking with the front desk I went in and gave them my receipt of the cancellation. They said everything was taken care of, I was cancelled, and I should expect a refund.

Well now February comes and I’m charged AGAIN. I have called and called but no one except for the manager can help me. The manager never seems to be in and never returns my calls. They are asking me AGAIN to provide my receipt of the cancellation but I ALREADY GAVE IT TO THEM.

Do not sign up for this gym unless you would love to be charged for life.

This place is awful. Not one working stair master for the last three months. They’ve increased their membership fee the last two months. They get rid of machines and don’t replace them. Not one person has a clue at the front desk. Absolute s*** show.

Update Oct 2019: They yet again raised my dues $11 per month without notifying me (and also breached the contract I signed which states they must notify customers of any increased dues). Not sure how they are getting away with this honestly.

They do not notify you of due increases, but instead charge your credit card without permission. The staff members provided me with e-mails for GMs that do not even work for NYSC anymore, or bounced back. NYSC has been billing me $10 more per month since December, despite telling me I am on a list of people which their previous rate will be honored. The gym isn't nice enough or clean enough to deal with such incredibly frustrating situations.

Extremely unprofessional, all they want is money. I had three accounts (myself and siblings) and they never disclosed the 45 days notice so now I have been charged for a month and a half and cancellation fee for three accounts. When I went in to discuss the situation with a represent, she was extremely rude and had a horrible attitude and spoke to me like if I was a child. Stay clear of this place!!!

The gym is not bad but the people running it are straight up scammers. If you read through the reviews its pretty obvious that all this place cares about is money. I was over charged multiple times and never got my money back. Even when canceling my membership they charged me the $75 fee for another year and refuse to give it back. STAY AWAY. These people will try to milk the money out of you.

**DO NOT DO YOUR PERSONAL TRAINING WITH NELSON!!!!!!!** I wrote that it all capitals so it can grab attention for a reason because this is your fair warning!!!! NELSON is a unprofessional, a scam artist and what you would call a β€œFelicia”. The first few sessions with him he will make you feel motivated and do all the things a PAID trainer is supposed to do. That doesn’t last for long. He will then start to ask you for rides home, rides to the store, ask to use your car, have you pay for his groceries and say he will pay you back (never does), he will cut your sessions short by 10-15 minutes by saying β€œmy other client is here early” or send you to do cardio which cuts off your session time that YOU paid for! He will promise you a β€œdeal” for these favors and then at the end tell you β€œSorry, your sessions are all up” meaning you get nothing and he wants more money. He will take advantage of you 100%. He is not a top of the liner trainer either and dances in his flip flops during your session. I wish I was lying when I write this but I’m not. I have filed a complaint with New York Sports Club regarding this and will seek legal counsel if I am not compensated for this scam!!!!

As a member I would assume the amenities would be working in Clifton, NJ
The fitness help desk has been virtually dismantled with no working computers, 75%all monitors on machines are not working. Seeing these things make me rethink my membership. Does management not realize maintenance in important?

2+ year member, as others have mentioned they will keep taking your money and even charge you the annual fee of 70+ dollars after cancellation. My monthly fee was increased without anyone notifying me. This increase was not stated anywhere in my contract. They also purposely delay cancellation. Avoid at all costs, sorry.

Been a paying member for over 3 years. Ok for what it was for. Tried to cancel. Told to come in. Go in and was told that they can’t cancel and will try to get more money out of you by delaying the cancellation for 45 more days. No where does it say anything
like that. Such a scam!!!!!!!

I have been reading a few reviews; I am currently a member but I haven't been going regularly anymore as I have been seriously considering changing gyms. The gym was very nice when I started around 2 1/2 years ago, people were friendly and motivating. Over time the few bad issues became worse and the last time I visited I was very disappointed. Front desk people on their cell phone do not make eye contact, the friendly smile we used to receive along with a clean towel has been replaced with a cart stacked with towels so you can get it yourself while we focus on our phones and talk to our friends. There are dust balls all over the floors of the studio rooms and the borrowed boxing equipment (gloves) are not cleaned or disinfected. As a new member I resigned myself to having to use them and they smell so awful I immediately bought my own but when other people use them and we are boxing in pairs I have no choice but to breath in the horrible odor (stinky under arm pits) coming from the gloves. The classes online state you can book a spot (this was never active) so what happens is people arrive on time and literally set up areas for their late friends and the instructors say nothing so others who are also on time have less or no space. For what pay I only expect a friendly, clean environment and certain rules to be enforced.

This is more of a concern than a review as I my girlfriend and I are considering a change from our current gym and value the feedback posted on here and It has me very concerned about joining this gym. There seems to be a lot of the issues I am already dealing with at my current gym and for more money. Reading a lot of these review is very concerning to me.

So I've been a member at this particular sport club for over five years. That being said, I have always maintain a certain level of decorum and gym etiquette. I make sure that any and or equipment I use is wiped down and weights return to its proper location. What is disturbing to me is that the gym personnel more specific the personal trainers. Day after day, I see the trainers with their clients during their sessions and upon completion of the session, neither the trainer nor the client for that matter, return the equipment they were utilizing to the proper place.

Dumbbells, weight plates, barbells Ect: are left on the floor which not only lacks courtesy, it also puts the members in a hazardous position. The gym has signs posted throughout the gym to have respect and etiquette for others and return equipment to its place...However we have the trainers who work for this gym and ignores the gym policy. Management should address this with its trainers..........Thank You

I was a customer here since the beginning and it was nice when it opened but has gone steadily downhill. When LA Fitness opened there was an exodus of members and the staff was cut as well. A particular machine I liked to use was damaged, flinging metal shavings around as you used it, for months.

I have been trying to get out of my membership for several weeks. I can't get into the web site despite following their instructions to reset credentials. Calling the 800 # yields "We can't help you now" And they hang up. There is a prompt for cancelling your membership which they apparently never answer.

Finally got an email back saying there is a fee to cancel. That's rich. I also see that people on here have cancelled and are still getting charged so I suggest you dispute with your credit card company and if they don't refuse the charges cancel your card.

A shame as this was once a nice gym.

DONT SIGN UP! Horrible Service. No one here knows how anything works. Tried canceling for the last 4 months. Keep getting charged month over month. Went in several times and even the person who "CANCELED" my account said oh its not canceled. Then the representative blatantly said i don't know what to do, The manager will call you. Waited months for a call, called back and the same person said Oh we haven't had a manager for months. Clearly they just lie to get you out of the gym so they don't have to deal with it. Will be filing a complaint with the BBB.

This is the most disorganized and dishonest place. Canceled over a year ago and have continued to be charged. Canceled again a few months ago and was now wrongfully charged for 2019 annual fee! I will have to cancel my CC that I’ve had for years because of this. I’ve disputed with my bank and they refunded me however I fear they will continue to charge my card wrongfully if I don’t cancel it. They are crooks! Corporate and Club transfer you back and forth. Terrible customer service and inconsistent staff. Josh who canceled me over a year ago is no longer there and Taneesha who supposedly canceled me this past time is now all of a sudden no longer there. So shady! Machines always broken, dirty facility, consistent break-ins in parking lot, lack of security, sometimes club is randomly shut down...disgusting! Do not join!

***BUYER BEWARE***

Unless you are independently wealthy, avoid this gym at all costs. I received notice in the mail that my account would be going up $10 on December 1, yet it did not specify which account. I have a corporate membership for a year contract. When I called to inquire, the person stated that my husband's month to month contract would go up $10, and that mine would not increase. Sure enough, both accounts increased $10, and the person who I spoke to at the gym (do they train their employees in customer service?) could give me no information, and stated that manager would not be available until Thursday, so even if I did try to cancel, it would not be effective until then. Point being, it's been nothing but trouble since joining this gym and I regret ever signing up. I should have known better. Keep all of your documents, get everything in writing and basically write down the name of every single person you speak to, as no one seems to know what they're doing. I'd rather be out of shape for the rest of my life then give NYSC another dime of my money.

Great gym, except when dealing with a billing issue. A late fee was charged to my account after changing my billing information online and it not being reflected on their end. The manager assured me an account credit of $15 would happen immediately during the next billing cycle. Nope. Spoke to him again about it on 8/1 and he assured me it was in the system and would be reflected during the month of August. Again, nope. How hard is it to do right by your clients and just do what you say you will do? There is a blink fitness opening nearby, and I'm starting to wonder if I should just give up on NYSC all together. Good customer service and follow through go a long way, and with all of the competition out there, I don't see why NYSC should be failing in this area.

**update - still has not been reflected in September bill, and was told it would be issued as a refund because nothing was noted on my account.

This is a very decent gym, but if I were to recommend a gym in the passaic Clifton area, I would recommend LA fitness. It's bigger and has more machines for the same price with no annual fees. LA Fitness also has a basketball court and I believe it has a gym, although I could be mistaken. However, if you just want a standard gym with no courts and/or pool, you won't be disappointed with this gym. They have a bunch of classes and a boxing room as well.

This is the only gym I have used so I don't have one to compare it to. The staff is friendly and helpful, I can usually use a desired machine, of which there are many, without waiting, the facilities are clean enough, there are classes offered, and there seem to be trainers on site..

UPDATE: As per request below I emailed the gym with the picture of the cancellation request attached to the email. I have stated that I do not think I should be responsible for the gym's mistakes and I do not feel like I should waste my time coming in again. I have not gotten a response and today my credit card was charged again. It is said that instead of concentrating on improving this gym choose to scam people.

Beware! I cancelled my membership on 8/14/2018 and I was still charged for October. When I called to ask why am I still being charged I was told that unfortunately old manager was not doing his job, so cancellation was never processed and I have to provide a proof that I indeed cancelled my membership. I do not see how is this my problem that they had a bad manager. Customers should not be penalized for this gym's mistakes

This gym makes it impossible to workout. The equipment is often out of order and there aren't enough of popular machines so I find myself waiting for long periods of time, which makes for an unproductive workout. There are weights strewn around the facility so I can't find some equipment when I need it, and there are trip hazards everywhere. And there are a lot of customers who sit on machines chatting rather than working out, or talking loudly on their cell phones for lengthy conversations. Not all of that is the gym's fault - it's a difficult clientele. But I've mentioned the equipment and the loud cell phone conversations to staff, and they shrug and laugh it off saying there's nothing they can do. This facility needs more attentive staff to instruct its guests to stay off the phone, politely free up the equipment if they aren't using them, and return weights to their home before moving on. It seems like common courtesy in a gym, but it isn't realized at this one so the staff needs to step up, but they don't think it's their job. It's hard enough to motivate to get to the gym in the first place - an environment like this just makes it not worth it. And, as others have stated, they make it impossible to cancel your membership and I feel like I'll be paying membership fees into perpetuity despite not being able to use the facility. As an update, I've been trying to cancel my membership and I echo the comments below - they make it nearly impossible. I have emailed individuals at the gym, emailed corporate, gone in person to speak to managers but they are never in, or at least never available.

Dishonest
After being convinced to change a permanent plan to another β€œpermanent plan” they raised my rates anyway. When I called the corporate office I was answered by a very snotty customer rep. She asked me β€œ do you have that in writing”. When I answered they did it at their counter and said it was good and the rate would never go up. She was less than professional and nasty and told me I need to get things in writing. Well, when it comes to NYSC. GET IT IN WRITING! because they will lie straight to your face

A decent gym with the all of the standard equipment. Maintenance on equipment is good and any broken equipment is repaired or replaced within a few days. Locker rooms could be freshened and restocked a bit more often. Some staff are pleasant and helpful while others act as if they are there just to scan your membership card (Which you do half the time anyway). Trainers are expensive, which is a tough sell in the suburbs.

Second gym I've been to. I live nearby so never looked at the shower. Lots of equipment. A trainer has always been available and willing to answer my questions. True, some of the equipment can use maintenance (missing parts, weight selection pins missing, missing handles). But I've always found I could do exercise I want to. Gym itself is reasonably clean. TV on recumbent bikes unreliable at times. Positives far outweigh the negatives.

For over a YEAR they keep emailing me promotions (that is easy to ignore) and CALLING ALMOST EVERY MONT. Used to be a great gym when I worked here ~2010. I was amazed at what could happen to a place that once was a beautiful facility. Now it's simply what you would expect from a $20/month gym. Definitely taints the NYSC name.

STATE OF GYM:
When I visited last year to sign up, I was met by an inexperienced and unprofessional salesman that knew very little about gyms. I toured the gym and was very upset about how crowded it was and the unclean appearance. There were weights all over the floors, people were not wiping machines after they used them, and the overall atmosphere was loud, smelly, and warmer and more humid than I prefer. The manager I used to work under had been very adamant about keeping the gym clean and at 65 degrees max.

SALESMAN:
When asked by the salesman, I was honest about my disappointment with the new state of the gym, but he could not seem to understand that I did not want to sign up. He continued to try to get my information and in the end seemed desperate for a sale. I left after I made it 100% clear that I did not want to be contacted by the gym after the visit.

CONCLUSION:
I went in expecting the clean, professional, cool and dry gym it once was, having decided to be okay with paying the ~$80/month I used to pay for NYSC when I lived in Manhattan, and came out utterly disappointed and truly sad about my previous place of employment.

After searching through many gyms I knew exactly what I was looking for and I went into the Clifton location to see if they offered it. When i asked about their cancellation fee I was lied to about it and was told there was not one for a student account. Now that i am trying to cancel my membership (one that I've made clear i plan to start back up when the school year is over), the company refuses to waive the $30 cancellation fee claiming that if they did that it would "break the bank". The general manager was actually yelling at me on the phone telling me how it wasn't her problem and how much that $30 mattered to the company. She even stated how often this happens and how her employees lying isn't something she was responsible for. This company doesn't care about customer service at all and I have spoken to nothing but rude representatives of the company who refuse to honor what I was told by their employee and by her boss. If this is how they behave about $30 I am more then hesitant to be a return customer to a company who doesn't stand behind what they promise.

I went in at 5:15 AM to bench press for 30 minutes when this place shocked me: they only had one (1) flat bench (and it was being used). They had at least 3 weird-looking inclined non-adjustable benches but only a single flat bench in the entire free weight area. They had 2 leg presses and a bunch of other contraptions, a giant room full of useless junk and all the chrome and fern fixings you can imagine, BUT ONLY A SINGLE FLAT BENCH.

My workout is ruined because I was on a tight schedule and I do a single lift per day.

Huge disappointment.

Terrible service. Management has NO CLUE what they are doing. They forget they work in the service industry and not a gov't agency where they can get away with it. It's honestly a joke. I have been a member for 7 years and tried to change my membership when they told me to come back at a time more convenient to them. They cannot make it more obvious they work for commission and the only thing they care about is signing up new customers to get their cut. They couldn't even spell my last name right, and i know it's not common but it's 7 letters, so i cannot log in online. The gym itself is fairly clean and well maintained, with the exception of a few machines that are out of service. They have a pretty good amount of equipment to choose from so you can get a good workout, besides 1 curl bar and a lack of pins in every other machine. They also recently did away with towel service, which I was not happy with at first but realized is not a standard in the area when I looked for other gyms. The sad part is that I would agree with all the good reviews below which were written 5 years ago.

Horrible place. Short version.... They try to charge you more than what you agreed upon for monthly membership. Never tell you if there is a problem with your account until it's to late. Just horrible business practices. Save yourself the aggravation and go to another gym. if i could give them a (-) score I would.

If it was possible to give negative stars, I would give -5!!!!!!!! DO NOT join NYSC under any circumstance. I joined a year ago after I had purchased a 30 day trial (of which I went the first day and they coaxed me into joining). Little did I know that I was in for a year-long battle with them and my credit card company! First of all, I signed up for a basic membership which would cost me $60 a month and was charged $60 for my membership, $60 for a personal training membership (which I did not sign up for), and $15 for an entertainment fee? I still to this day have no idea how those 2 extra charges came about and I called and asked numerous times and was told that it was normal and that's what I signed up for. 3 weeks after I joined, I had to have emergency surgery that would not allow me to workout for 6 months to a year and I had to attend physical therapy. I contacted NYSC and spoke to Alberto who ensured me that my membership would be cancelled as soon as they received my doctor's note. I checked back every week for a month until they received the letter and was told that my membership was taken care of and I would not be charged anymore. Sure enough, my credit card was charged again the next month. To make a very long and painful story short, I battled with them for a year!!!!!!! They insisted every time that they never received a doctors note when it was faxed there (with confirmation) 4 times! I then disputed the charges with my credit card company after proving that I cancelled numerous times and they sent the bill to a debt collection agency. This gym is unprofessional, ridiculous, and money hungry. The trainer that I had met with when I joined was horrible and after I told him I wasn't interested in any more sessions, he texted and called me numerous times to set up more sessions with him. Utterly ridiculous and not worth the frustration. This place will charge you even when you are dead!

A little expensive given LA Fitness in the area is cheaper, bigger and has a pool, but this location it's cleaner, has nicer staff, they provide towels, the equipment always works, and the spin room just got some brand new Lance Armstrong bikes.

If you just use it for weights and cardio, not worth the $70+ a month they want for new members, also there is no pool, no basketball court. The clean towels do not justify the price!
