My son started with the Toms River school in March of 2025.. he was invited as a buddy to come try out a class for free. He had such an amazing time and I knew before we even left the building that we would be coming back. These wonderful instructors have created such a fun environment to grow and learn for all ages. This was truly a game changer for my son. My 4 year old goes to class at the Brick location and I have zero complaints. The classes are structured, the instructors are super knowledgeable and maintain control of the class while still having as much fun as time allows. I went to this school for about 4 to 5 year and they always said if you quit you will regret it and I unfortunately had to quit due to other school related issues and when I say I wish I never quit I mean it they are a amazing school I had problems in school and that’s to ppl I was able to look past my problems and focus on what I was learning in the ppk classes I made it to a purple belt and this past year 2024 I would have gotten my black belt I have had people ask myself and my father questions about ppk and if they should join and I always say yes you will not regret it I left 3 years ago and I still go visit every once and a while but for 2 years I didn’t and I walked in the doors one day after school to just say hi and they recognized me after not even a minute so when they say you are family they do not disappoint. If you are thinking of going I would 100% recommend that you go

We enrolled our son in PPK at just 3 years old. The instructors are all incredible! They’re all incredibly thorough, attentive and hands on, and it has made our son grow by leaps and bounds. He looks forward to his classes and it’s been extremely beneficial for our active boy. Our son started at the Brick PPK mid October 2023. It has honestly been life changing for us in so many ways. At the end of November 2023, he started an intensive outpatient behavioral therapy group program at Jersey Shore. He was diagnosed ADHD, ODD and suspected of being on the spectrum. We were told he would be in group for 6 months, possibly longer. He graduated early on March 8th, just about 10 weeks later. I honestly believe that is because of what he has learned, brought home and applied from PPK. This place is so much more than just karate. The engagement and commitment they have to have fun yet teach our kids all about discipline, respect, leadership, dedication.. the list goes on.. We adore Master Steve and Master Dave. The hands on teaching and interaction with each and every kid is something I will never understand how they do it. Every single child gets recognized. This isn’t a place where you’re “just a number”. They know you by name the first day. That’s how you KNOW they care about your kids. Everyone there is amazing. Mr. Lohmeyer and Ms. Lindsey also always make it a point to give a high five, say hello and acknowledge Michael’s hard work and progress. We are so thankful for the family we have gained — there’s no other place we would rather be on the road to black belt with.

When my husband passed away suddenly in October of 2020 we were obviously devastated. My complete focus became finding stable support and balance for my daughter Jane, who was 6 at the time. In my search to find somewhere I could bring her for support during the pandemic, I came across Paul Prendergast Karate. After speaking with Master Andrew, I immediately knew that this was a place that could provide the stability and structure she needed during this incredibly trying time. Their commitment to their students to help them develop discipline, perseverance, leadership skills and strength within a loving and positive environment was nothing more than a godsend. Having lost her father, it was so important to me that my daughter have strong male role models in her life. Master Andrew and Sensei Steve immediately embraced this role for her, and I can tell how much this means to her every time she walks through the door there. Our daughter Paityn has always had trouble focusing in school. She started school when covid first hit us and she learned from watching class from a computer which I believe is where her focus problem began. Well my wife and I had parent teacher conferences last week and her teacher said that she is the most focused and most hard working student she has in her class and wishes all her students were this way. The instructors here are top notch and genuinely care about their students. They notice when my son (7) is struggling and have pulled him aside to correct him. They encourage and motivate him, not only with karate but with school and home life also.

I couldn’t have better things to say about this place and ALL of their employees!! We were having a difficult time with our 7 year old son. We had a meeting with the school about his behavior and social skills and I was just about ready to bring him to a child psychologist…when he was invited to go to Paul Prendergast Karate with a friend from school during buddy week. Our son LOVED it!!! And wanted more!! We were happy to sign him up for basic lessons (2 days a week, every week). A little over a month in and he has made a complete 180 with his behaviors at school. Ever since starting Karate lessons, he has improved, in EVERY aspect of life, and continues to constantly show more improvements!!
Just recently had a scheduled parent/teacher meeting…and the teacher sees a massive improvement in him!! He still has more to improve on, but I’m confident he will get there, especially with the help of Paul Prendergast Karate!
I can’t say enough great things about ALL of the instructors!! Master Andrew has been amazing with checking up on his progress inside and outside of Karate. They seem to be much more focused on building a complete, respectful person opposed to just teaching Karate.
Sensei Steve and Sansei Kasch are amazing with the kids!! They make the lessons so much fun for the kids, but are constantly teaching them life values and respect (and I don’t think the kids even realize they’re learning that at the time). Even the black belt assistants are amazing!! Mr Deckland and Mr JP…and anyone else I may have missed!!
Bottom line, this place is amazing!! It has completely turned my sons life around in such a great way. I’m so happy to see him so dedicated to it, enjoy it, and learn from it every time he goes!

I discovered Paul Prendergast Karate through a Facebook ad and I couldn’t be happier that I did. When I brought my 5 year old for an introduction and we got to meet Master Andrew and learn about everything that they stood for, I was so impressed. Since starting at Paul Prendergast Karate Serafina has in 2 months or less shown about a good 75% difference in behavior on a positive slant I would have to repeat myself multiple times and get a lot of TalkBack from her about doing things for me for herself and since the class her mannerisms have matured she voluntarily says mommy no you finish eating before you make me more food or Mommy I can help you clean the house or do the dishes I could do it myself for you go sit down and relax Mommy I can help you fold the clothes why don't you sit down and watch TV for a little while she's literally offered to do my job and has also started to do her own job on her own which entails straightening up her toy room and her clothes and her room and making her bed every morning she's very dedicated to the class enjoys it very much and practices at home all the time there is never a moment where I feel like she doesn't want to be at class it's the highlight of her week and it also has improved her attitude toward Academia at school in kindergarten it was like pulling teeth to get her to finish one sheet but now she is doing four to five sheets a night at home with me plus reading and other non-screen time activities on top of whatever homework She may be given also she noticed on her own that she needed help I did have to ask her if she needed it but she noticed and admitted that she did in school and voluntarily opted when I asked her if she wanted help from the school one on one to improve in those areas she is now a person a child that says I love learning what this school has done for my daughter in the matter of months I couldn't do for her alone as a mother or with my husband in 2 years this program really works it does a lot for the child in a home environment a school environment in her martial arts class environment and behavioral all around when we're outside or amongst ourselves at home I can't thank this program in the school enough for the strides they've made with and for her in such a short amount of time worth every penny.

Just signed up my 7 year old son. He has tried several sports but none have held his interest. He asked to try “martially arts” aka karate and I looked at several places but decided to try Prendergast Karate after seeing the reviews and having a trial session with Master Dave. So far he has been super excited and asking when he can go back as soon as each lesson is over.

Most importantly, however, I have to say that Master Dave is an amazing instructor with the kids. I’ve seen a lot of coaches over the years but none as enthusiastic and engaged as Master Dave. My son has some attention issues but loves working with Master Dave and this is the most engaged I’ve ever seen him. We are happy to have found him and Prendergast Karate.

We enrolled our daughter Leilani into PPK right before her 6th birthday. Her mom and I couldn’t decide between karate, dance and gymnastics. I knew she could be great at any of these things and would enjoy doing them all. The deciding factor was what does she NEED and for us it’s “focus and self discipline” and that is what you get at PPK! This is the best overall program and training I’ve ever seen for my kids, I have 3 of them in the school. They get top notch martial arts training, great physical fitness, life skills such as responsibility, self discipline and dedication are what take this program over the top. The staff is incredible and treat my kids like their own. It’s nice to have people help teach our kids how we would teach them especially with all the nonsense kids are exposed to now. Absolutely LOVE this facility! I just recently signed my 5 year old son up and he absolutey LOVES this place! Master Dave & Master Steve are truly the best! Even hand wrote my son a welcome card! So very helpful, understanding and kind! You can really tell that this is a true passion for these guys! And so much more then a paycheck! We also love Master Alex! I highly recommend this place. I signed my son up here because I am a single mother and my son needed male role models in his life. I have really truly and sincerely found it here at Paul Pentergast Karate ! Id give it 10 stars if I could!

After calling and setting up a time to come down and check out the school, Master Steve gave my wife and I our first mini lesson. Once we got out on the mat and worked up a sweat we were hooked. Looking for some self defense as well as balance in our weekly routine, we've found so much more. This is a family and we feel right at home. Between Master Steve and Master Dave, we have excellent instructors who you can see care about their students. We're very happy to have found PPK, and it's made even better with these fantastic instructors leading the way.

As an out of shape, overweight man in my late 30s, signing up for Karate was one of the most intimidating things I've done in my life. I had signed my daughter up months earlier, so kind of knew what to expect. But still, the fear of kids laughing and pointing and strict teachers asking me to push beyond my pain was all too real. And all too unnecessary.

Honestly, I love being there. Even when I'm struggling! The team is supportive, welcoming and always constructive. You are helped when you need and driven to succeed at your own pace, not at that of your classmates. The entire staff across both locations is friendly and welcoming. Each class is fun, even though you are pushed hard, it's rare not to smile or laugh at least once.

Throughout our Covid journey, the school quickly set up remote zoom classes, testing and talks. They kept the kids and adults on track with the best of efforts. The return to class has been treated with equal professionalism, maintaining distance and repeated checks on students conditions before entering the school. They have taken everything about our current time seriously from the get go.

As an adult, if you're looking to get in to martial arts, improve your physical fitness and grow as a human being you could not go wrong with this school. As a parent, I can not be happier with the growth and confidence I've seen in my daughter over the past year. Don't put it off!

I just took my first self-defense class with Master Paul and it was absolutely amazing! My husband has been a student of Master Paul for 12 years now, and he's been bothering me to go for years. I finally listened and couldn't be happier! I highly recommend this fantastic school to anyone looking for anything between basic self-defense knowledge to expert martial arts skills. FYI my daughter and son have been going since they're 3 years old, and I can't begin to express how much self-confidence they have both gotten out of their learning.

So my daughter has attended Toms River PPK for just about a year now. She has done so many amazing things. I’m beyond proud of her. She is a full green belt. Entered the recent tournament and took first place in Kata & Sparring.

From day 1 everything was explained to me for me to understand. See I have Multiple Sclerosis so my memory isn’t the greatest, nor is my balance or coordination. I have no actual physical fitness background, I didn’t even take gym in all my school years. Well I’ve been not feeling so great about my appearance/weight so why not take a kickboxing class at PPK. I have now completed 12 classes. I’m completely out of my comfort zone. There are some things I cannot physically do and Master Andrew guides me to do something that I can do that works for cardio and me! I’m pretty excited that I took this step and feeling pretty amazing. Thank you PPK for helping my daughter be more amazing then I could ever imagine & for helping me do something I never ever thought I could.

Last night I attended a Woman’s Self Defense Class I definitely learned some new tricks to keep myself protected. Very informative and helpful tricks, thank you for offering this class. And on the plus side...all monies collected were donated to a woman’s & children shelter locally.

I’ve lived in the Toms River area for majority of my life and have heard the name Paul Prendergast for years. In my family we’re cheerleaders/gymnasts but I when I started looking for an extracurricular activity for my 6 year old daughter, karate was more up her alley. We looked at a few dojo’s and found many of them were simply money hungry, handing out belts for a price, or weren’t focused on teaching kids self-discipline. But this place is NOT the same as the others. Master Paul, Master Dave, and Sensei Steve are AMAZING! They teach character building as well as self defense. Her focus and desire to help around the house have increased TREMENDOUSLY. I can’t say enough about how phenomenal their program is. Loving their program, I decided to check out one of their cardio kickboxing classes to try and get myself back into a fitness routine, and after one class I was immediately hooked. I brought two of my closest friends to the class with me and now we look forward to going all week long, and the prices were actually more affordable than most of the groupons we saw! I plan on starting beginner classes for karate myself, and can’t wait to get started . If you’re in the ocean county area and you choose anywhere other than Paul Prendergast for your child or for yourself, then you’re a fool.
