Re: Formal Complaint Regarding Harassment, ADA Violations, and Misconduct at Freehold and Jackson Locations

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to formally report two deeply troubling incidents that occurred on the night of [date] at your Freehold and Jackson, NJ Planet Fitness locations, involving both harassment and violations of federal law related to service animals. My wife and I purchased memberships earlier that evening after reviewing your stated Service Animal policy, which clearly indicates that service animals are permitted in your facilities.

Incident at Freehold Location

Upon arriving at the Freehold location, we experienced initial issues signing in due to the absence of staff at the front desk, but we began our workout with the intention of checking in once an employee returned. When your staff member eventually engaged with us, his behavior quickly became hostile and unprofessional.

After my wife calmly explained that our dog is a trained service animal and described her task-based functions, the employee rolled his eyes, gave her attitude, and walked away. Minutes later, he returned to inform us that the dog could remain as long as she stayed off equipment—an instruction we followed without issue.

Shortly afterward, he aggressively approached us, claiming we had been “causing problems since we got there,” despite no other members expressing concerns and despite the fact that your security footage would confirm we were fully compliant. The situation escalated when he began yelling, threatening us, and ultimately invited us to “meet him in the bathroom where there are no cameras,” clearly indicating an intent to start a physical altercation. This conduct is not only inappropriate—it is dangerous, abusive, and entirely unacceptable in any professional environment. He also refused to provide his name when asked.

Incident at Jackson Location

Shaken by the Freehold encounter, we went to the Jackson location, where the first staff member we spoke to was courteous and apologetic. He confirmed that our service animal was welcome as long as she caused no disruption—which she did not.

However, around 4:30 a.m., another employee—likely the incoming morning staff—approached my wife while she was alone and demanded “certification” proving the dog was a service animal. Under federal ADA law, staff may only ask two questions: (1) whether the dog is a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task the dog is trained to perform. They may not demand paperwork, identification, or certification. This employee’s actions were not only inappropriate, but illegal.

After overhearing the interaction via a phone call from my distressed wife, I approached the employee and respectfully explained that we are not legally obligated to provide documentation. His response was hostile, dismissive, and he ended the conversation by telling us to “try again tomorrow and see what happens,” which can only be interpreted as a threat of further harassment.

Legal and Policy Concerns

Both incidents represent serious concerns:
• Violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
• Harassment and intimidation of members
• Failure to properly train staff on service animal policies
• Abusive and aggressive employee conduct, including threats of physical harm
• Failure to ensure a safe, inclusive, and nondiscriminatory environment

These behaviors are entirely unacceptable and expose Planet Fitness to significant liability.

Requested Action

I am requesting the following steps be taken immediately:
1. A full investigation into both incidents.
2. Identification of the employees involved and appropriate disciplinary action.
3. Confirmation that all staff at these locations will receive proper ADA compliance training regarding service animals.
4. A written response outlining how Planet Fitness intends to prevent such incidents in the future.

Please understand that if this matter is not handled promptly and appropriately, I am prepared to pursue all available legal remedies.

It’s been mentioned in a lot of other reviews, but I have no idea how management hasn’t addressed the issue with the staff. Maybe today’s generation just wasn’t taught basics on human interaction or the definition of “working”. Every time I go, there are empty paper towels, however, they can be found beside the multiple over flowing garbage cans throughout the gym. I’d address it with staff myself, but they’re always too busy have a broccoli boy haircut meetup in the corner. I wonder what they talk about or how they met since I’ve never heard them greet a customer in the time I’ve been going there, like they don’t know the words “hello, how are you, have a good day.” I don’t go to the gym to make friends, but it’s just odd to have an employee look at you and remain silent as you check in, especially when you greet them. It’s so socially awkward. On the topic of broccoli boy’s, this gym is flooded with them, and they have little to no etiquette. I’m shocked they don’t bring extension cords to plug in their phone while they sit at the machines… emphasis on sit at machines and not use machines. If they’re not on their phone, they’re in a crowd of 7 surrounding one machine while several of them sit down at the adjacent machines, of course not using it. Again, I’d address the issue with staff, but if they lack the mental capacity to hold an exchange with a customer, I have no faith in their ability to communicate in a friendly confrontation with guests. As others mentioned as well, broken machines, out of order treadmills with no sign on them, filth, terrible employees, awful clients. The list goes on. Hands down the worst gym I’ve ever been to. After going to planet fitness for years, I think it’s time to jump ship and go elsewhere. I would advise the same if you are considering this location. I know of a better chain up the road that I’ll be switching my loyalty over too.

This place doesn’t even deserve the 1 star I’m forced to give to write this review. The lack of customer service makes it hard to keep coming back but unfortunately this is the only 24 hour gym in the area. I have been coming here for 5 years and within those 5 years, I have yet to be greeted at the door. A simple “Hi, how are you?” Has never came out of anyone’s mouth that works here. I’d understand if the front staff was busy, but for the past 5 years?? There’s usually 2 or more people at the front and they literally make eye contact with me as I walk in, make sure I scan my phone, then go back to looking down at their phones looking miserable to be getting paid to do the bare minimum. I am 100% certain greeting guests at the door was in the job description when they applied. This type of attitude falls on the management here even though I’m sure the management is no better. I have been to many Planet Fitness locations and this one is by far the worst one. The equipment is usually out of order, it’s always filthy, and the staff just looks like dead zombies glued to their phones. I hope the right eyes see this and realize they need to quickly turn things around. The workers at the front are supposed to be the face of the company, not make you want to drive further to another location or just simply cancel.

I don’t understand how I get charged for the month to go to the gym but can’t even go so why did I pay for not being able to go just to go D: it should’ve been just what I owed previously. $140 and I couldn’t even go . I enjoy each experience I have at the Planet Fitness that I go to in SC. I went Freehold while visiting family. It was much different. Smaller and not as kept up. The warm welcome was not as warm as the South.

Machines are broken and neglected they MUST be replaced. The air feels grim, heavy, and unclean, and most areas of the gym are poorly lit. Overall, the whole gym needs a thorough scrub down including the locker rooms.

Been here since day one opening, alot has changed. People are idling and texting on machines for 15 plus minutes not even moving. Gym rules need to be in English and Spanish people need to wipe down machines. Transgender are now allowed in both bathrooms. People complained about my husband being loud while lifting but people are sitting on machines and not wiping them down, that is how others get sick. I spend my morning waiting for people to get up. This is my family gym always has been, always will be so sorry for honest criticism.

Since the Jackson one was doing a remodel, I had to go to this one. Which I don’t mind, but every time I’m doing my working out. I end up getting sick at this location. Like stomach bug sick, and I clean the equipment with my own disinfectant wipes. Something is definitely in the air at the location, because I do get sick every time. My Jackson location I never got sick ever! I can’t wait for Jackson to open back up, because this gym needs to definitely get a remodel next. Also their equipment half of them are broke down, and need new padding.

Would really like if I didn’t go and deal with the dirty location! I’ve been there so many times for the past 2 years and gave planet a pass a few times but this isn’t the first time I’ve dealt with little to no employees with no paper towels or chems to clean! Trash cans over flowing! And when I come in I am greeted by a gentleman just sitting in his chair in the lounge area! Just find it that I’m paying for this? It’s just ridiculous and when you have another nearby location closed for the month you would be able to accommodate the guests from other locations bummer but won’t be coming here again rather drive to brick or pay for Crunch fitness !

Locker room/bathrooms are outdated and small, only two working stairmaster machines (always being used) - the other two machines have been broken down for ages. Many broken treadmills as well. And the water fountain is disgustingly warm - like hot tub water! When will management decide to start fixing this place? Not sure where all of the positive reviews come from, but I've been to PF's all over the country and haven't seen many in worse condition than this location. This place needs to get it together!

I’ve signed up for many gyms in the past, and this is the first time I’ve consistently gotten myself to go. Planet Fitness in Freehold is exactly what I needed. The staff is incredibly helpful and they keep the gym extremely clean at all times. When it comes to the equipment that I use daily, they have multiples of each, so I rarely ever have to wait to get on one. If I do wait, it’s never more than a couple minutes. I would also like to point out an experience I had with this gym shortly after the country opened back up after Covid. I had a membership before the pandemic and they put a pause on monthly and yearly fees during that time. Once we were allowed back in, they started charging my card again. I hadn’t realized they were for awhile, and I wasn’t attending the gym during that time. Once I noticed the charges, I called the gym and was able to get on the phone with the manager at that time (I wish I could remember her name). She was understanding of the situation and very helpful. She was able to refund my payments for those months and cancel my membership at that time. Her service was the reason I chose to join Planet Fitness again when I wanted to start living a healthier lifestyle recently.

Their trainer here is horrible. She needs to go back to school to learn the job. Because she is not very good at it! And some of these guys that work here early evening have too much time on their hands. They get paid to not do much except chit chat with the girls and their friends. They don't care about when the place is a filthy mess. Sometimes you have to stand there waiting for the coffee clutch to take a break before they help you. Some not all of the workers actually work. The others are a waste of my money.

In response to the owner: A few things were mentioned to the gym before. Just to be told yeah, yeah and then you are blown off. Good money is paid for services that you offer but the customer doesn't always get. I get life "nothing's perfect". But 🙄.

I’d give 2.5 if it were an option. Staff is always pleasant but this PF could use a little TLC compared to the surrounding locations. The bathroom is usually dirty and poorly stocked, the toilets don’t flush, and every other treadmill always seems to be out of order. I only use the treadmills, but overall the equipment looks like it’s pretty outdated. Ill continue to come here purely out of convenience, but if u are near another location I’d suggest checking them out instead.

I just signed up 4 months ago and so far the gym equipment is decent,what is not good at all is the staff that works at night time,I always go there about 8 or 9 pm when is not busy but the guys at the desk don’t do anything but sit on the couch using their phones at all the time while the cleaning stations are always empty and garbage can full to top and bottles are empty,a complete mess…except the days that a lady works there she always checking and filling up the stations.
Today was the worst day here,the men’s room was super super nasty that you can’t even breathe,toilet paper everywhere,clogged toilets doors don’t lock,sinks don’t work except one..a complete disaster.
I walk to the desk to tell the guys what I saw there and tell them it needs some attention before it gets worse during the night so one of the guys just walked to me with an attitude just to told me they know about it and can’t do anything and said “that’s why we gonna raise our prices so we can take care of it” and walked away just like that!! Incredible.
Hopefully this gets to the manager/owner and fix this issue.

I travel the United States for work and I always stop at a Planet Fitness every day in different locations to get my workout in for the day and take a shower.
I am upset to say out of all the planet fitness I’ve been this one is definitely not on the top list.
I thought being that it was in a decent area it would be great or at least decent but I was wrong, I’ve been to ones that were and somewhat questionable areas that were better.
The game was not well lit not like how they were in the picture I saw prior, staff was more entertained on there phones then customers and gym size was not as good as others I’ve been to.
By far the thing that was most disappointing was the locker room, it was disgusting, urine all over the toilet seats probably due to all the kids that go there, extremely poor lighting in the bathroom to the point you need your phone flashlight to use the stall, smallest shower I’ve seen in a gym and no light in the shower so it’s pitch black when you close the curtain.
Hope they do improvements to at least keep up to the standards of the other planet fitness in the states.
