Thing I think is great they don’t rib you with your membership low price work out all you want and you don’t have to take out a mortgage to pay for it well worth it and then some only regret I have is I didn’t join sooner

This location is in fact a "gym" there is equipment, weights, treadmills, etc - but overall poor experience.

Let's start with parking - the gym was in a stripmall, but you can not park ANYWHERE near the gym. There are signs all over saying you "will be towed". I have been to many gyms in this same stripmall situation and never was there a parking bias. "Gym patrons will be towed at owners expense" smh.

The freeweights were all mixed. Finding a set of 10s of 15s scattered among the racks was time consuming and unnecessary.

I couldn't find any cleaning stations so the wet spots on the benches (that seemed to never disappear) were gross and concerning.

They didn't have a refill spot for waterbottles, just an old school fountain were you had to get your mouth close to the spout.

Not a fan of big guys throwing around weights either. One dude working on shoulder (with 10 pound weights) threw them every set. Why sir? Are they THAT heavy you can't just out them down? What is the point of throwing them?

Abs experience was also so so bad. Where are the mats? Scatters around the area where maybe they're supposed to be? Are they clean? Do I need to bring my own?

Overall wasn't pleased. Maybe it's just this location, but I am definitely seeing how plantet fitness is better in SO many ways after just 1 visit.

After unexpectedly visiting this gym three times lately I find the negative reviews unfounded or inconsiderate. The gym is spacious, have sufficient equipment to have whatever good workout you would like to have based on your personal goals. The young staff are quite friendly and helpful. The real issue could be certain customers ruining the equipment with the unnecessary slamming. They should just work with the weight that they can properly handle, while keeping in mind that constant repairs or purchases of equipment may not be cost beneficial for the owner, considering the rather low membership fees. Let's be real folks.... make your contribution.

I’ve been a member of Retro Fitness (Belleville) for about 10 years, and I can honestly say this is the best the gym has ever been. For the first time, there are real changes that benefit the members. The manager, Joe, has done what no other manager has—he’s transforming the gym in a way that truly makes sense for the people who use it. He doesn’t just move equipment around; he listens to feedback, takes suggestions seriously, and addresses concerns right away. Another 100 degree day, another day without AC. I can make my piece with the haphazard parking, poorly maintained equipment, and absence of an actual manager on staff, but the lack of AC during high temp days is outrageous.

Staff seems to have no idea what's happening or why and management is keen to let issues pile up as long as members keep paying. The 'Owner' responses to these reviews even seem fake. I'll be transferring my membership to another gym in the area.

Either save your money or pony up for a higher quality gym. This Retro is not worth your time.

By now, we all know what to expect from a Retrofitness and this one delivers. I was one of the first people to join this gym when it first opened. Returning now to see how it's doing.

There are a lot more machines, but unfortunately, the ratio of broken or run down machines has increased as well. It also seems that people are still stealing the carabineers. By now, one would think the gym would have solved this.

The staff are great. Young and cheerful. They always greet you when you enter, which is nice. I think they should walk the floor more, encourage more people racking their weights, and wiping down the machines.

Overall, the place could use a couple day shut down and a deep clean, some paint, disinfecting, and it would be as good as new.

Three stars for my rating isn't a bad thing It's really what you should expect because you were getting what you pay for. It's a good, solid local gym.

If you're flexible in your workout approach then you could definitely work around the busted machines or missing pieces.

What’s going on with the AC? It’s been over a year and it’s still not fixed. This is the closest Retro to me, which is the main reason I’m still going, but it’s honestly unacceptable. I go to this gym purely out of convenience, but I do not recommend it. The staff is generally unfriendly and rude, showing selective kindness depending on who you are. I’m a regular here and get along well with most other members. While I don’t have issues with most of the staff, there is one particular employee who constantly stares at me with uncomfortable, dirty looks. I’ve ignored it for a long time since he was hired, but it has become increasingly unsettling.

I finally confronted him and asked why he keeps staring at me. His response was incredibly rude and dismissive—he told me, “If you don’t want people to look at you, don’t come to a gym.” I’ve been a paying member for over five years and have never encountered anything like this. Unfortunately, complaints go nowhere here. The management has an unprofessional attitude, acting like they don’t need your business.

I would leave this gym, but I no longer drive, so my options are limited. I’ve stayed quiet about this for a while, even though the looks continue. I also suspect they treat me differently because I previously called them out on Facebook.

If you’re considering this gym—don’t. Spend your money at Blink instead. It’s a far better experience.

I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at Retro Fitness in Belleville, NJ. On May 18, 2024, my wife, who was 39 weeks pregnant, encountered a distressing incident while working out. Despite her visibly pregnant condition and need for a fan, another member became belligerent when I turned it on for her. His aggressive behavior escalated to the point where he punched the fan, breaking it.

What is most disconcerting is the gym's inadequate response. There were no managers present at the time, and the young staff member on duty was ill-equipped to handle the situation. Even after the police were called, the gym allowed the aggressive member to continue his workout while my wife and I were asked to leave.

I submitted a formal complaint and have made several follow-up calls, but the management's response has been dismal. Despite assurances of a follow-up, it took five days for any contact, and this only happened after my wife gave birth. A subsequent follow-up email was also ignored until I was told today that the owner had received my complaint but chose not to respond.

This experience has highlighted severe deficiencies in the management and safety protocols at this facility. I strongly advise potential members to consider these issues before joining this gym. The lack of accountability and proper handling of serious incidents is unacceptable.

Lady's and gents, this is one of those places you have to evaluate yourself. This gym is pretty good for what they charge. You have a lot of choices for machines and weights. The place is pretty big, they even have a movie room where you can run in the dark and watch a movie. That's unique!! This place is under $35.00, it's CHEAP people, you get a lot more value than the $10.00 planet fitness type of gyms. And did I mention that you literally pay $35.00 for TWO people!! What's their down side? their pricing list makes no sense, I actually felt offended by it because your intelligence is tested. For example their $19.00 a month package also includes a $49.00 membership fee and a $49.00 ANNUAL fee. This totals $326 a year which is $ 27.00 a month ( not including taxes) , the core pkg is $ 26.99 a month, no monthly fee or annual fee total $323 a year, their platinum is the best buy IF two people are joining. I forgot the price but it's about $35.00 a month includes $49.00 membership fee. Whomever created the pricing list is either not bright or deliberately testing your intelligence or a scammer. That was my only turn off, other than this its a very good gym for the money. Ohh and bring a towel, no towel service, youll have to air dry. The 4 star is well deserved because of the variety of training equipment. If you are a serious body builder I suggest this place.

Equipment is staring to break down, the rubber dumbells are tearing apart, and there are only maybe 2/4 25lb plates in the whole gym so you are constantly looking or in need of them. Insane how this place still had members to patronize them. There’s a countdown to closing time announcement on the loudspeaker every 3 minutes and they start 2 hours prior. Then they are adamant about not allowing you to drop the dumbbells. I mean, they have dumbbells up to 120 pounds, and they demand that you put them down softly after your last rep. The equipment is in ruin and despair. It is a health hazard and dangerous to use any of the bench and some of their machines. The ownership only cares about income, and it’s very obvious because I’ve been coming here for more than a year and I still see none of the equipment receive repairs or maintenance.

This Retro has to be privately owned because Retro Fitness as a whole should be embarrassed to associate their name with this place. The owner must have zero knowledge on customer service and retention. Barely any smaller plates at all (10s, 5s, 35s). I give it up to the staff who are friendly and I’m sure are just doing as they are told. The only good thing about this place is the location. I wanted to freeze my membership for health issues and they asked me for a DOCTORS NOTE AND DIAGNOSIS!!! I was not under contract and did not understand. Incredibly inappropriate. I asked if there were any other reasons to freeze an account, they said they would need that too, ex: vacation, moving, would need tickets or new address location.
This place would rather lose a customer than to not inappropriately ask for someone’s personal information.

Please whatever you do, DO NOT even think about signing up or agreeing to take the “free body assessment” that is offered upon sign up. “Element Personal Training” is nothing but a bunch of thieves who do a fantastic job in selling you a wonderful personal training program. Me & my gf personally met with trainer Mr. Daniel Rizzo who honestly seemed down to earth and a person who genuinely seemed passionate about helping people achieve their goals. After completing a free session and with reaching our personal goals in sight, we agreed to sign up. We both individually had to put down $150 for the first month (1 year/$100mo contract each person and $50 “education fee” each person so the trainers can receive more training) We had scheduled our first training session for the following week. Upon showing up for our first official training session with Mr. Rizzo, he was absolutely nowhere to be found nor did the gym or fellow trainers know about his whereabouts. I attempted several times to call and text him on the number he gave and did not receive any response. Days followed and I was still met with radio silence, clearly being ignored as his clients. When we went back to the gym a few days later, we were given the number to Regional Manager named “Mazi” who I left a voicemail and texted but was also ignored and received no response from. At this point, all we wanted to do was cancel and not even continue to with this program but was told “Mr. Rizzo is in charge of handling that and who has access to do that”. Mr Rizzo also took over $400+ upfront payment from my sister who he also has ignored and never showed up to the first scheduled training session. When my sister brought this matter to the Retro staff, we were told management was going to call which they never did. It truly is absolutely disgusting the way business is being handled here and the way clients are being basically robbed from a training company that retro is endorsing within their own facility. Even further, it’s a shame how Retro themselves don’t care to assist or even attempt to help rectify the matter in providing some type of information or guidance on how to have these issues resolved. Please whatever you do STAY AWAY from this establishment, it’s a club that in the end does not care about its members or the false services that it’s members are spending their hard earned money on.

The bathrooms are usually dirty. At times there is no toilet paper. There is one soap dispenser that barely even puts anything out and the soap doesn’t even lather making you feel like you didn’t wash your hands. Get new soap dispensers!!!! Have employees clean/check the bathroom regularly.

Weights are always out of place. I never see staff going around tidying up like I have at all other gyms.

The cardio equipment is so old!!! The exercise bikes don’t work (except 1), multiple treadmills are out of commission. The stair climbers are literally from the 80s and rusting. This is the worst gym I have ever been to. I regret signing the contract.

I know in the past I had written some bad reviews about this place but it is finally turned around. It took some time and a lot of work but the place has really been cleaned up considerably!
The staff is much nicer, the gym is much cleaner and I have noticed a friendlier clientele attending.
The bathrooms and locker rooms have been re-done and there is a fresh coat of paint on everything.
The HVAC system in the core room is now working perfectly.
All the elliptical machines have new cupholders.
The broken free weights are being replaced.
When something breaks it is fixed right away.
There are still some minor issues that need to be worked out but I’m sure in time that will be taken care of as well.

Should have most of what you need to get a good workout in. Equipment isn't the newest but I rarely have an issue with anything being broken and the staff is helpful!

I joined this location because it's close to my school through a promo they were running. It's a friendly environment and no one is such a meathead that you feel uncomfortable. I have the pass that allows me to go to any location so that's nice. I'm still in my first month, but so far I like it better than another gym, who's name rhymes with "think".

If could rate as 0 ⭐️ will I been cancel my account at least 4 years ago they’ve never updated it in theirs systems so the past 4 years they keep charging me, when I found out I went straight there to straighten out everything their answers they don’t know asks if I can speak to the manager, the manager never there to solve any problem. Went home call almost everyday to speak to the manager the answer is the same she or he is not there. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR STOP GIVING THEM BUSINESS CAUSE THEY DONT CARE

Went to this gym for a bit. It's fine. There was, however, a guy that was walking around with his shirt off, which I think is bizarre and inappropriate in any gym setting. Made me uncomfortable. And it wasn't on one occasion. My boyfriend still goes. I will not be going back.

The location is slightly smaller than other retro. The parking is available on the side of the center. The cleaner that day I went was extremely nice and helpful.

These guys are great and I think the facilities are above average. The guy at the front desk was understanding when I had scan issues with my barcode and worked a solution ASAP. Made me feel like VIP. 5/5 from me.

Very very good gym. I’ve been to every retro in north jersey and this one is the best. Clean, usually not packed. Good set up and rarely can’t find the weight you are looking for

Sunday, about 4pm. Changing clothes in the locker room. Standing in front of the mirror and taking my bra off. I notice someone passing me from the back but I pay no attention as usual. As I reach for my sports bra I glance at the person and it turns out tobe a Retro Fitness employee, a man! So he just casually passed me by while I’m standing there topless. I’m in his way, so he couldn’t just not see me. He was looking for another employee, a girl who was in the locker room further in. I was so shocked I just looked him straight in the eyes and asked “what the hell?” He mumbled “oh, I thought no one was there” and continues on his way, reconnected with the girl and they went out.

They have the equipment you need to get your results. Pretty much its up to you're determination and resilience to attain your goal. If you need an extra push they have personal trainers and classes with an extra fee of course. I would like to see new/different equipment...like that I'll feel like a kid in a toy store (something new to play with). But they do have an open space in the back to your right by the hidddn ab room where switch it up and create your own routine with freestyle weights.

I signed up at Fairfield thinking all the Retro were the same high end feel, this is not. Broken showers, dark dirty locker rooms, etc.

This gym fits in with its surroundings. Its cheap, but doesn't have much to offer. Very very small....very very crowded (even at 10 am), and they lack the basic machines I've always been used to at my previous gyms. (I've always gone to Planet fitness so I dont exactly expect a luxary gym either). I was very disappointed but I guess if you're used to the area maybe it's not so bad?
