I guess all of the negative reviews were correct. I’ve been a member for a couple of years and as many said before, on any given day 1/2 the equipment was broken. The treadmills were especially notorious for not being operational. The seats on some of the stationary gym equipment was also ripped.
Fast forward to Sunday, 10/5 and there’s a note posted on the door that they have PERMANENT CLOSED! No warning, no notice. As a matter of fact, on Google Maps They’re still lists as open. To make matters worse, they moved memberships to another location without permission. If you want to cancel that membership you must go to the new location IN PERSON to cancel. Are you serious?? I would not recommend RetroFitness to anyone. I know this is a franchise issue but clearly corporate has bad policies as well. You can get a membership online but have to go in person to cancel?? Especially when you’re canceling because the location closed with no notice?

Friendly staff, equipment is working 99% of the time. ( I am not using cardio equipment so can’t comment on that) The gym is kept clean and in the right order.

To all the people complaining about cardio machines and other things.

NO GYM will fulfill everybody desires, always will be something you do not like. There is no way to pleased everybody, it all depends how much are you willing to compromise.

If you are a cardio users 90% of the time there is a gym called PLANET FITTNESS, you can go there and be happy, you will pay less too. 😀

Great gym. Nice people. We're transplants from Rockaway retro which closed down over a year ago. Only recommendations is maybe clean the floors after hours. Sunday mornings while working out is a distraction and has a Odor. Otherwise we love it.

UPDATE: This gym will wear you down. Don't go on a Saturday morning.
They have a boot camp class right in the middle of the gym cutting the gym in half and is in the way of the normal gym goers. Not the only one to complain about this. Along with cutting the gym in half by blocking the middle with a class they also play music LOUD during each set then cut it then start it up again then cut it and so on. So not only do we get to listen to the horrible.music already playing on the loudspeaker, this "class" has their own wireless speaker and blasts dance music. Then a class is going on and music blasting in there too. I have the new Samsung buds pro with noise canceling and still cam hear every song from three sources clearly. It is an annoyance and reduces the convenience and focus and is a huge distraction.

They shouldn't hold the class in the middle of the gym over an entire section closing it off.

I like the gym, and working out in a smaller facility. There is a good group of regulars and the equipment is sufficient. Connecting to the spotty wireless so you can play or stream music while you workout is near impossible nowadays. Constant drops and inability to connect. Biased because my career is in tech industry. Also cell signal in the building is shoddy at best as well so that’s why wireless is so important. Aside from that the modem rap and garbage music blasting in the locker rooms daily is an annoyance but I have a high pain tolerance so I deal. Classes are good and the employees at the front desk are courteous and helpful. So i put 4 starts due to the facility, machines, and front desk service/friendliness. I feel the wireless issues can be easily remedied as well as the volume in the locker rooms, if controlled by separate mechanism, also easily done.

Machines are always broken. Two rows of cardio equipment has 15 broken/non operational machines out of the 22 total in the rear two rows. Signs are on some and the rest are just not powered on. This goes on for months without any repairs made.

Weights are never racked properly and plates are regularly found laying on the floor causing potential tripping hazards.

I love the classes that are offered and the great energy that I encounter every visit to the gym. I love my spin instructor's Lydia Roth and Amy Fauvie and kudos to all the hard work and time they devote in teaching all their classes. I have met new friends since I joined this gym and I look forward to gym time and attending the classes on a weekly basis. My husband and I love it here. As working parents we also love the fact that there’s a daycare which there’s not many gyms with daycares around. Jessica at the daycare is so patient with our little one who’s not very easy to deal with and can get separation anxiety when we work out. You can tell she has patience and love for kids as she’s always interacting with them unlike other people that work at the same daycare who’d just sit there and ignore the kids while being on their phones. Jessica is the only person I’d bring my kid to in this daycare! She’s compassionate and kind to our baby. Thank you for your amazing work Jessica! Luna and us appreciate you so much 🩷

I only have one complaint. Every week a new machine breaks and they never get fixed. I’ve been a member for 3 months and the same cables and machines have been broken since I joined. Not for nothing but we pay good money to use the gym and this is unacceptable in my opinion

I am so happy to have joined Retro. It is conveniently located for me to stop in the afternoon after work. The staff is friendly and I appreciate the greetings as I walk in. So happy I decided to join this past November. I have the best trainers! Kevin Travers and Chris Esteves! Words cannot express how happy I’ve been for almost a year now at Retro.

I came in only knowing Instructor Amy Fauvie, and now I take many of her classes and she introduced me to so many nice people.

I’m also a big fan of Zumba Christie, instructor GIgi and Zumba Julianna who really knows dance and teaches us things I’ve never thought I could do. It’s so fun!

And Lydia runs this gym like a fine tooth comb and teaches classes. She’s always helpful and informative.

The “Survivor Challenge” that I’ve been participating in recently also continuously throws me out of my comfort zone. Like way way out.

Let me elaborate. I’m a creature of habit running into the classes and running out which I know I need to improve on. This challenge is taxing (I couldn’t walk the next week but I’m pacing myself better), however, very enlightening.

I just hope I do Survive (just kidding), not really.

Even if my team does not finish on top I’m going to continue on this journey.

5 stars is surly not enough to rate retro fitness kenvil ! From the moment you walk in getting greeted by Kayla or any of the others you feel welcomed. The classes I attend are awesome the instructors are so great at what they do ! The instructors of the classes I attend are with Gigi,Amy,& Kathy and they all give me the incentive to work hard and teach me the right form to get results and not injure myself. Kayla at the front desk makes the most amazing shake and can do so while helping someone sign up for a new membership whilst starting a tanning bed for something else 🤣 girl does it all.
Beanca and Deborah offer great care for my kids! I know when I’m working out my kids are safe and well cared for and I couldn’t ask for more than that! The child care options is what brought me in! It’s so important for moms to take care of their physical and mental well being and set an example for their children that fitness and movement are great for the mind body and soul !

Everyone on staff is absolutely amazing! Kayla is great and answers all of my questions, she is very kind and welcoming! Kevin, the trainer is very nice as well. I cannot say enough amazing things about Georgette! Her classes are so amazing! I have taken three different classes that she offers and each one is amazing! She also works with me with the modifications that I need. She is kind and just great! I have told all of my mom friends about the childcare that is absolutely exceptional! First let me say 4 stars is pretty good. This is a pretty good gym. It's a good value as its relatively cheap. The staff is usually teenagers who are super friendly. Overall, I have been a member here for a few years and am satisfied.

Pros: The equipment is adequate- they have a deadlift platform. Parking is never an issue. It's a lot of the same people at the same time, so it has a nice community feel.

Cons: The facility is on the smaller side, so it feels cramped at times. They desperately need another squat rack. Finally, the music is to loud. I hear it through my airpods.

The gym is fully equipped with everything I need for a great workout experience, including the machines, weights, drinks, smoothies and tanning. A big draw for me in keeping motivated has been the app. It's helps me stay competitive and accountable for my time and effort.

One thing I'd love to see for a more fluid experience is the ability to scan a QR code on any given machine to add it to a workout I'm tracking.

I have been a member here for at least three years and it has gone downhill. I honestly thought they were getting ready to close the doors because equipment has been broken for months and they keep saying the parts are coming to no avail. Eight ellipticals and all broken in some way (either the machine doesn't work at all or the TV works but the sound doesn't etc.) The only machine whose tv and sound both worked is now also broken. They just had a membership drive so there are more new members but no parking and still no machine repairs. Save your money or go somewhere else to join.

I’ve been an inaugural member of Retro Fitness Kenvil from when it opened a few years ago. Overall I’ve been satisfied and believe it’s a good gym, but it is representing Pure Core trainers and I have to share the terrible experience I’m having and want to caution anyone before getting involved with them. Before signing a contract I urge anyone to go to the Better Business Bureau website and look at Pure Core. You will see there are complaints and horrible reviews submitted several times a month with a common them of predatory practices, substandard performance and playing hardball to collect as much money from you whether you’re satisfied or not with no recourse. As a sponsor of Pure Core I was asking Retro Fitness to help out with resolving the hard ball tactics but Retro Fitness then walks away and leaves you hanging. Caution do not fall into the trap. Pure Core got my name, phone number and contact information from Retro Fitness. By promoting Pure Core in the Gym and having their business conducted in the gym, Retro Fitness is a sponsor and promoter of Pure Core. Retro Fitness facilitated the business transaction by directly giving my information to Pure Core and now there is a problem, Retro wants nothing to do with it. By defacto Retro is part of the transaction.

Call down to cancel and a teenager tells you that you have to come in, finally after many calls they will do it on an email. 70 bucks later in late fees, and ABC 1800 number blows up your phone twice a day...

I used my guest pass today and visited the Retro Fitness in Kenvil. I truly enjoyed it.

The customer service was great. Alejandro at front desk was very polite and explained the memberships options.

Equipment is in good shape.

***The only thing i'd like to mention is that I feel that the cleaning spray that is being used at this gym is a bit too strong. When I first walked in, I enjoyed the smell.. but once I started jogging it actually started to give me a headache and I started coughing. Maybe airing out a bit the place is a good idea.

Overall, gym is great. Prices are great too.. I will come back one more time to make sure the smell won't interfere with my workout. Thanks!

I came to Retro Fitness 3 months ago just looking for a gym to supplement running during the winter. But now running supplements the gym! The Kenvil facility has a wide range of equipment, an awesome open turf workout area for functional training and my favorite, GREAT personal trainers. The best decision was to sign up for Retro personal training. My trainer, Michele, keeps my workouts interesting, intense and most of all, injury-free. I have been able to learn free weights and kettlebells - things I would have been too intimidated to try on my own. However, everyone there is very helpful with any questions or concerns that pop up. The gym is roomy, very clean, lots of cardio equipment - anytime you go you are not sitting and waiting for a machine to open up. I am extremely happy here and am looking forward to staying healthy and fit for years to come.

HORRIBLE COSTUMER SERVICE AND MANAGEMENT
PLEASE DONT EVER FORGET OR LOSE YOUR KEY TAG!
I had a terrible experience at this Place Retrofitness in Kenvil on route 46 I was a regular costumer who also frequently had a personal trainer Mike and bought shakes there almost every day. Till one day I lost my bar code (Key tag) to get In and was extremely embarrassed and humiliated by the employees at the door who held me for 40 min at door, they were totally rude and out of line I was obligated to show my bank account twice after showing my documents and telling them that I was there the day before and the people that were working knew about my key tag and let me in w no problem i was never treated so badly in my life they took my phone and went through my bank account twice I was questioned over and over again by the employees in front of all costumer was asked to go home and find my key tag, was asked how much I pay, if it was Groupon, if was online if I was just trying to get in for FREE many times in front of everyone I think the receptionist who’s name is Kayla was having a bad day because as soon as I said that I lost my key tag she already gave me a really bad attitude and kept bouncing from place to place like a mad person, she asked me for my license and I gave to her as soon as she put my name on the computer it popped out, I could see my picture and info there I kept asking her why she wouldn’t let work out if she has all my info on the computer and she would just walk away go to the back , call people on the phone and laugh on the phone, while I was waiting. My boyfriend was there the following week to talk to them because I was upset and embarrassed for days and no one never called me back to apologize and Lidia told him that their employees are very protective of the business and laughed About it. My question is protective of what? I’m a hard working person not a criminal. I guess for her its ok to treat people like that. Basically told him That it was because I signed up online which it’s no true. I signed w her! In the branch and I dont think it matters were u signe up YOU DO NOT TREAT PEOPLE THAT WAY!!!! Absolutely not!!! I left many messages trying to reach the so called general manager Lídia who was the one who signed me in person. ( never called me back! Again I don’t think that people should be treated that way if they forget or lose their key tag bar code.

I love this Retro! I have been to a lot due to traveling all over NJ, NY and PA. This gym is clean and the staff is always cheerful and friendly. They recently added Les Mills classes which are awesome especially Sprint CX and Body Pump. I brought my friend into try a class for free and she’s hooked too. The new Personal Training Manager Kevin is a great addition to the gym. He honestly wants to help you achieve your goals without breaking your wallet. Besides personal training, Kevin and his team now offer nutritional counseling too. I love the fact that child sitting is included in your membership and they having tanning too. If you’re looking for a gym to join, I would definitely recommend Retro of Kenvil.

I've been a member of this gym for just a little under a month. I have felt a little intimidated when at other gyms but at this Retro I feel absolutely comfortable. The staff is super friendly and seem like they really enjoy being there. A lot of times, I bring my daughter with me to work out and the child care attendants are very nice and keep a great eye on my 1 year old. The facilities are nice and clean. I really enjoy working out here.

Really, love Zumba on Wednesday with Sandi. Also Zumba on Thursdays With Christine. BodyPump with Alyssa, Les Mills Sprint, cxworx and step with Lydia are my favorite class. Everyone is really friendly, Thank you .

Do not give your credit card info to them they rip you off for unspecified charges, they have all hidden rules. I have had a very bad experience with Retro Fitness, it wasn't me alone, bunch of my other friends from Kenvil, we left. They make it very hard for you to leave them, make sure you give them in writing, even then they claim they didn't have your request in time for cancellation. There are much better gyms in Roxbury than this place and they won't be after your wallet.
