I just walked into this gym on a trial...you'd think that saying I'm using a trial the staff would try to make a good first impression but nope the dark haired girl at the desk made a face like I was a bother. Anotger girl came to assist me I signed a health waver and to the locker room I went I passed 3 showers on the way to the lockers a handicap shower with no curtain and two very small showers with glass doors that were barely frosted the doors were so low everyone could see you showering I would've been exposed mid draft up and everything exposed if you walked close enough to the door. Zero privacy! ZERO ZIP NONE NADA!!!! I TURNED AROUND AND WALKED OUT!!!!!!!
Responding to owners: to whom it may concern maybe the girl was having a bad day I get it we all have bad days so let's just dismiss that but could you please put full doors or even curtains are ok like planet fitness but something that isn't exposing? Thank you.

Just joined and pretty disappointed so far. They have no ankle straps, leg press machine along with a couple other machines are broke, and sanitizer wipe dispenser is usually empty on the main floor.

It would be nice if they wiped down some of the machines. I noticed weights on the Star Trac machines stick together as if someone spilled a sticky drink on it.

I guess you get what you pay for.

Has a decent amount of equipment. And in comparison to other NJ Retro’s somewhat friendly members.
But man what the Zumba class wants, they get. Second time that I’ve gone that this has happened.. They open the door with their music blaring without any concern for the rest of the members in the gym. Especially with the background music already going it feels like there is two parties going on in the same space. It would be great if they could keep the door closed. If the Zumba ladies are too fearful of being in a room with that many other women, don’t come. I’d like this to be sorted out before I come back again.

Edit: I spoke to the manager. She was kind and we came to an agreement if this happens again in the future.

Overall a pretty decent gym. Sometimes the men's room will have no soap, so that's always nasty. But im giving it a 1 star because they have all these TVs and only ever play Ridiculousness. Might as well turn the TV off.

I am so glad that this Gym has reopened since the COVID related shutdown and it is great to get back into shape once again. I really appreciate the immense efforts put into ensuring all of our safety by the Manager Felix as also his fellow personnel. The machines are repeatedly cleaned with sanitizing wipes and adequate social distancing is followed in the way the machines are setup and set apart. Having a personal towel and a sanitizer to use for our day's workout is an effective way to ensure that everyone tries to ensure their own and others safety during this time. In accordance with the current regulations the gym management also ensures that the number of people in the gym is no more than 25% of its capacity and this has proven to be a blessing for anyone to be able to move from machine to machine with ease without having long to wait inbetween. Kudos to the Retro Fitness Management and the Manville center personnel for their careful planning, professional service and enthusiasm even during this tough time.

I wanted to update my review based on my ongoing experience.
The staff continues to do a great job overall.
Just as important, I am constantly seeing a staff member wiping down equipment even after someone who's used the equipment or machine has already wiped it.
From what I can see they seem to be doing their part cleaning and sanitizing the gym and equipment.

The place is dirty. I have never seen anyone clean the machines. They have a lot of machines and also a lot that have been out of order for months. They recommend that everyone wipe down equipment but are always out of sanitizer. There were probably 10 people there today and no sanitizer or cloths to clean the machines. There is no instructor so if you have a question your out of luck. Overall not a good experience! Time to look for a better gym.

I have been going to Retro Fitness for a couple of years now and so far, I am happy with my ability to still get my workout in, especially being under the covid restrictions and limited capacity. I really like that the gym is generally NOT overcrowded when I go. I hate when any gym gets crowded to a point that everyone is on the machines I typically use, all at the same time, and I then I have to struggle to try and get my routine in. I have very limited time so I need to be able to get in and out efficiently.

The staff is also always friendly and I appreciate that 95% of the time someone actually answers the phone when I call ahead to check capacity status.

I also noticed that the background music is being kept at a volume that allows the customers to also be able to listen to their own music without deafening themselves. This used to sometimes be an issue at many other gyms and I had to constantly ask the employees to turn the background music down so I could hear and enjoy my own music.

I also really appreciate that the equipment is well maintained and rarely do I encounter something that is broken.

I hope the current staff continues to keep all of these practices in place going forwards.

I terminated my membership on September 3rd and a week after termination on September 10th Retro charged my card for a random amount. AFTER TERMINATION OF CONTRACT. Therefore, this was an UNAUTHORIZED transaction.

The first time I had called about this and spoke with a woman who said she would notify her manager and he would have to call me back. 6 days went by and no call, so I followed up again and asked to speak with the manager - except he had no idea that I called previously and that nobody brought it to his attention until I did. He further explained that he had no clue why I was charged and was extremely apologetic because he understood my membership was terminated and said he would issue a refund. 10 business days go by (maximum estimated time of refund) and still no refund. I followed up AGAIN but this time he said he will have to call the credit card company to find out what’s going on and he would let me know. Still no call back and no refund.

So ILLEGAL and UNPROFESSIONAL. If I were on the other end I would be calling the customer with an immediate update since I was at fault. My money was stolen from this gym and they clearly could care less.

I joined Retro at the Raritan location a couple of months ago, and absolutely love it. Tried Manville today for the first time, and I like it a tiny bit better. It feels more spacious, and the locker room is laid out better.

It would be great if you could add a stretching cage. There’s plenty of room for it up in the punching-bag area.

Retro Fitness of Manville is a great fitness experience! The group exercise schedule diverse and has a little bit of everything for everyone. The instructors are knowledgeable and accepting, always changing routines to keep you interested and excited and the staff is friendly and always has an answer. Highly recommended!

Coming in and buying a membership for myself with my friend was exactly what I needed and wanted. I was very pleased with how kind the manager Sule was with us. We haven’t worked out in quite some time and she showed us around and helped explain everything to us. Very nice woman and glad I signed up!

I signed up for this place when they first moved to this location. Throughout the years it has gotten worse and worse. I left retro for a year before rejoining couple of weeks ago, but it took an arm and a leg to get out of my contract without paying the maintenance fee. Talking about the maintenance fee, you guys charge for the fee, yet the workout equipment are always out of service. The garbage in the bathroom is overflowing, the soap is watered down to save on soap and the bathroom always smells. (get an air freshener from Walmart!) other than that, staff is friendly.

This was my first time using Retro Fitness, i
was in the area for work and needed a good pump. The offer a 3 day visitor pass for free, i just showed up, they scanned me in and I enjoyed all the amenities for free. The equipment is pretty good here.What I was impressed with, they didn't mention or talk of membership. Compare to other Gyms the monthly and yearly fees seems affordable.

An ok gym if I want to do a quick workout. I'm used to the Green Brook facility which is much larger and better set up. The staff are not terribly friendly. The free weight area is too small and under equipped. The benches are very uncomfortable to use. They don't have any regulation olympic bars...the ones they have are undersized. They have one squat rack which is also very awkward to use. Some of the weight machines are good, but most are placed very closely together.

So if you need a gym.. this is a gym. Nothing special, nothing great. It takes forever to get broken machines fixed. Some are labeled as broken some are just there in a broken state. There are a bunch of machines so close to each other that you can't even get into. I've never seen it packed which is good. The staff seems friendly but even they are like idk about how things are run at this place. It's below average for a franchise gym.

Sorry I joined. Men's Locker room always stinks bad; only one urinal and its often clogged or broken. Blastingly loud club music, even in the locker room. Why? I feel like I'm in a bar. Many machines broken for months at a time. Closes too early on the weekends. I guess no one wants to work there. They give you 'points' for showing up then want you to go through this byzantine process to get a protein shake. They can't just scan my card and look at my account? I HAVE TO download some app to do it? Can't wait until my contract runs out so I can go somewhere better.

I normally go to Raritan and thats where I will go from now on the staff at the Manville one was very aggressive with the way they explained the tanning at this gym. I am not gonna name the staff because I dont want anyone to get in trouble because we all have bad days. But the way she talked to me was very confrontational I wont be back glad Raritan is there they have always been polite to me. Also the smoothies are more expensive at Manville location for some reason, the prices should be the same but I guess they wanna squeeze coulle more quarters out of you.

The gym is nice and has friendly staff. But, the gym has THE WORST maintenance. There is always a shortage of either paper towels or the wet wipes both near the machines and in the bathroom. It is hard to stay clean and hygienic when there is no resources to clean the equipment.

I wish I could give a -ve rating. The staff at Manville Retro Fitness is unprofessional and unfriendly. I left my phone at my home. When I reached the facility, I did not know whether I have left the phone at home or dropped it somewhere. I requested the front desk staff at Retro Fitness Manville to make a phone call but he did not have the courtesy to allow me to make 1 phone call. I am going to cancel my membership from the next cycle and will not recommend anyone to sign up. Do not want to share the name publicly

Great gym. It certainly meets my needs as a super jacked and tan Goginstin magnet. Do you even Goginstin, bro? But seriously, it's fine. There are some things that I could gripe about here but they have my credit card info and they could sneak phantom charges on my account if I don't behave like a good retro fitness ambassador. BEWARE. This location is unethical. After our membership was cancelled, they re-opened the account several weeks later. Three months elapsed and we get a call from a credit agency trying to collect membership dues for those 3 months. How bad is that !! Many calls later and a visit to the facility we are able to correct this. A year earlier, our son went to join, and they allowed him to sign a contract (which was a invalid contract because they must be 18 years or older). He was told it was on a month to month contract and could be cancelled at any time. When we tried cancelling, we found out about this illegal contract. They gave us a hard time when we told them were are cancelling. The sheepishly backed down when we threatened them. Shame on them. They are just trying to get memberships. Must be on commissions and willing try to get away with unethical practices. So stay away. Far away.

Not the best retro I’ve been to. Every machine that has TV on it it doesn’t work, the machines are squeaky, there are machines that been out of order for months now, someone even wrote dates on one of the out of order sign to see how long it has been out. The top of the balcony is always a mess around the punching bags. THE WORST PART are the staff that work there, they are supper immature and you can hear them talk about people they are working out or that are bigger. Thy are constantly on their phones, playing around and being loud. I even seen the Snapchat someone that was using a machine wrong, which is so unprofessional!! I only go there because it’s very close walk for me to the gym but I much more prefer the one in Raritan. AND THEY HAVE MORE MEMBERS THAN THEY CAN FIT IN THE GYM, which it should be allowed because 5pm comes and you can’t get on any weight or machines to workout because it’s soooo packed.

First let me preface by stating I am not a gym aficionado. This Retro location was much bigger than I expected. Lot of free weights. Lot of open space. Patrons are not up against one another. Lot of ellipticals and treadmills.

Staff are friendly. Machines are clean. Only down side I would say, which is not a reflection of ownership or staff, but maybe fellow patrons is that equipment tends to be out of order frequently and for at times longer than liked.

I would definetely recommend this retro since I've been to a few. There seems to be a problem keeping the bathroom spelling clean and looking clean. Sometimes clean, sometimes not. Seems like they are very short on staff. But the staff that works there are very sweet. The child care girls are great. And the gyms is a great setup. The theatre room is a joke with a $200 projector that is below SD standard and you can't see anything so the interests is gone. I've been to Retro North Brunswick which was head and shoulders above this Retro in Manville. But if you live nearby I'd say def go. And dont forget to hit the Habachi grill next door.

I started out here and I liked it at first but recently they cut back their later hours and I understand that but what annoyed me is that when they close earlier now the employees stay and work out after they close. Don't join this gym! If you try to cancel your membership they will continue to bill your credit card after the 60 days that you are required to pay. Even though I brought in my letter to cancel my membership, they are telling me that I never brough it in, even though I watched them scan the letter onto the computer. I've called 3 times asking to speak to a manager and they are never there. I always ask the associate to write a note to the manager so they will call me back and they never do! I'm writing this complaint out of hope that maybe someone in management will read this and finally call me back. I was a member of this gym for almost 4 years and it sucks that they are being so shady about canceling my membership.
