If somehow the ho-bos at the quick check down the street can see this review, you should come to the retro for shelter. They obviously don’t check on the locker rooms much bc the urinals have been broken for months now. The locker room looks like a mess and many lockers are doorless and have been ripped off the walls. Here are some other things wrong with the gym as well: 7 out of 21 Treadmills broken, Buckets all over the gym collecting water dripping from the ceiling constantly (if it rains there is like 6 buckets) The Chin/ dip assist machine has been broken since Feb, it’s August now. It’s honestly a disgrace this place is still open. I don’t get how machines are down so long. The chin/ dip machine is stuck on 140 lbs, which is basically unusable. It’s getting ridiculous. I understand it’s only $20 a month but at this point they should be paying me to go there. #shrink

I’m a 52 year old woman, and I’ve been a member here for a while. Convenient, fairly clean, awesome front desk staff. HOWEVER, the amount of broken equipment is getting ridiculously. 9 of 21 treadmills out of order, 1 of 2 leg extension machines, decline bench press not to mention tons of issues with the nautilus matching weight mechanisms. Really sad. They don’t even have enough “equipment” broken signs and the guys at the front desk are handwriting them now. More people should be leaving negative reviews to try to motivate the owner to take action. Corporate should be appalled…. Will be checking out other local places very soon.

Probably one of the worst retros I’ve been to in terms of quality of equipment, layout and management. Been here twice and one of the times they turned off all the lights to let the members know the gym was closed, no announcement or warning. Kinda dangerous in my opinion but whatever. This is the bare minimum for a gym if you need a quick workout but definitely would not recommend. The one south of this one is better.

GYM RAT REVIEW: TLDR go anywhere else
Starting with the layout it's a 3 level gym with nothing on the first, locker room and a tiny little room with some OLD bikes and third floor with whatever is left.

NOW FOR LAYOUT - minus one star: The gym has ZERO flow and ebb. It was uncomfortable and very cramped, all around awkward setup.

MACHINES YOU ASK!? -Mins one star: ALL the machines were old and battered. I saw maybe less than 5 "new" machines and many were in disrepair. But worse than that was the fact that they had a total of i believe 6 leg machines ( i went on a leg day) and 2 were broken!! Everything else was upper body, core and free weights.

Customer service- plus one star: They guy Bill behind the counter was pleasant and polite! He's the only reason I'm not giving them a 1-star review. ROCK ON BILL

Cleanliness - minus one star: The locker room looked like it hadn't seen a mop since the gym was first installed and both urinals in the men's bathroom were out of service. It smelled of urine and was very unclean. Everyone in the workout area wiped down their machines after use which is cool I guess but honestly I feel like the place was covered with nasty sweat and urine.

So honest opinion of a gym rat?

This place needs an OVERHAUL ASAP and go to any other gym, you'll most likely be better off.

Bought a membership and soon came to conclusion that I wouldn't be using it much so I went into the facility to cancel my membership. A nice lady at the front helped to "cancel" my membership. 6 months later i looked at the checking account i used to soon find out it was closed because retro fitness was still charging me for every month after i "cancelled" my membership. Now I have the billing company calling me to pay off a lot of money for a member ship that was "cancelled" and not used for more than 6 months.

Update: They finally fixed the holes in the ceiling, but now, in the last couple months, the paper towels dispensers are always empty, and theres never any towels at any time of the day.

There's multiple holes on the roof and water is always leaking onto the floor. They have buckets everywhere to catch the water and its been like this for over a year! Not to mention, they close for every little bit of snow that falls. This is crazy! Some members take their training seriously, and they eat certain foods and supplements before their workouts! I will be canceling as soon as my membership is up!

The blonde man tends to be rude. Every time I buy a water he ignores me for a few minutes while he sits on the other side of the desk, back to me, flirting with his female coworker. He never makes eye contact. He never greets. He always turns his back to me before the transaction is finished. Never responds when I say thank you. Not sure what his deal is, but it's been this way for months.

Talk about a dying gym. Got a membership because I was interested in yoga classes and they were offering BOGO with a free flex membership. Signed up for the yoga class online and was excited to attend. Then we got to the gym, waited about 15-20 minutes for someone to see we were standing at the check-in desk to then only find out they don’t offer yoga and don’t know when they’ll be offering yoga even though they advertise it! I cancelled my membership on the spot … Disappointing. I’m giving them an extra star only because the employee was kind, understanding, and apologetic. Seems like RetroFitness is having a hard time staying afloat in Central NJ.

The ceiling leaks and there are buckets filled with old water throughout the place, old equipment that has not been fixed or updated, place smells like mold. I am rating Retro a 3/5 because their equipment is old. The people who work out here are quite the character. It definitely fits the bill and gets the job done, but when compared to other fitness gyms, it is lacking.

The good thing about this gym is the price. If you sign up for a membership you can expect to pay around $20-25 a month, which is a fraction when compared to other two gyms previously noted.

The best thing about this gym is that the employees and management are really nice and friendly. The gym has been clean since I've joined and I haven't seen it dirty once. Some equipment is failing and takes time to repair. There are roof leaks that have gone unrepaired for a long time. Bathrooms could use some TLC! The showers are missing shower heads and usually there is no soap in the dispensers by the sinks. The water fountain hasn't worked right in years! The building is supposedly being torn down, which is most likely why things are not getting repaired. They should still fix some minor things that doesn't cost a lot of money to repair.

Every August they take 45 dollars for maintenance yet some machines stay broken forever. To the point where the owner throws away the machine with no intention of replacing it as if nobody will notice. The seated unilateral row machine, which was near the studio, had been broken since January 2022 and now it's just gone. With more and more people going into the gym it makes you wonder where the money is going if it's not going back into the business. I can't stand this place and will cancel my membership once I finish building my home gym. Save your money and time and go to another retro.

Shout out to Amanda, Wanda, Alex, Jacob, and Alyssa ! You guys are the real deal. Awesome vibe every time I come in to workout. Clean gym for the most part. I see staff going around putting away the weights, ropes, handle bars, emptying all garbages, etc. Just from what I’ve noticed, the turf needs to get vacuumed. It’s hard not to notice all the pebbles and dirt when I’m stretching. There’s dust bunnies under the weight rack too. Bathrooms need to be cleaned and toiletries need to be supplied. Overall, just needs a touch-up. I like this gym. It has everything I need and pretty spacious. Busy in the evening. My biggest pet peeves are horse-playing, lack of deodorant, and hygiene. I don’t need to see nor need to know what you do behind closed doors lol. I’m not afraid to make that known either, so you’ve been warned. 😂

Worst gym I’ve ever been to. The staff is friendly, but not sure if management has them doing anything beside greeting customers. The machines are not wiped down frequently (not just the parts people wipe down themselves. Sides of machines have dust and sweat stains), a lot of machines need repair (out of the 20 something treadmills only about 6 or 7 actually work and the broken ones don’t have signs on them to probably hide the fact they don’t work). It’s become a inside joke with a couple of friends that they don’t clean considering the 2+ years I’ve been there, there is a yellow rag on the ceiling that has never been moved. As of the date of this review the manville retro closed down so those customers are now combined into this retro, which is unfortunate as the facility is much more crowded, but again this would not be as much of an issue if the machines were maintained properly and you didn’t have to wait. If you are willing to drive a little bit further to a better gym, I would suggest doing that.

Update: about 8 months have passed after this business contacted me about this review and the vents are still dusty, there is chalk that has been on the floor for weeks proving the floor hasn’t been cleaned, and the rag I mentioned earlier it’s still collecting dust on the ceiling

They have added new equipment to allow you to get better workout and the cleanliness has much improved as well since when I first started coming the bathrooms were always dirty and cleaning supplies were out a little often. This gym needs a serious detailed cleaning. Months of dust, sweat & gunk accumulated everywhere to the point where a maintenance cleaning will not do justice. One of the dirtiest retro fitnesses I have been to. Seems like employees here do not care about the place like they do at Edison RF. Gym is also smallest of all the retros in the area.

While I appreciate that the lights are replaced, no one warned me that my gym clothes should now include an eclipse viewer or at least glaucoma glasses. After a chest workout I am wondering how long I will be seeing spots. At least the bright lights may deter the rodent population as the smell of dead mouse is overwhelming.

It has been months since an account was "closed", yet I keep getting billed. Even after talking to them multiple times about it. The last time they promised to stop billing me and that the last charge would be credited back. It never happened. Worst experience and customer experience! I joined the gym and membership on Oct 12 and only came for 2 days and due to Job have to move out of the area and couldn’t continue . I called them to discontinue the service around first week of nov but the asked me to come live from parsippany to Bridgwater to discontinue the service. I came last weekend on Nov 5 but they told me that I have to pay the next month membership as well as I had to cancel by Nov 4th , 7 day before the deadline .. worst customer service and cheaters. Two years ago I cancelled my membership with Retro by physically entering the Retro Fitness in Raritan. It was a gift from my mother, I told her I cancelled but she didn’t keep track of the charges. Months later she informed me she was still being charged (her fault for not telling me sooner my fault for trusting the manager of Retro). I went in to Retro yet again told them what happened and they admitted they made a mistake but refused to give my mother a credit but did extend my membership. I was reluctant but didn’t feel like arguing and decided to give it another try. I gave the reasons for cancelling i.e.: the locker room being filthy, broken doors, broken toilet seats, no paper towels. The staff either non existent or just plan rude. The floor of the gym dirty, broken machines, old worn out machines and equipment all over the floor. Well, nothing has changed. I called on Monday the 1st of August about a $42 charge…person couldn’t figure out what it was. First it was; my membership was upgraded, then it was a ‘yearly charge’ whatever that is. I asked to speak to a manager there wasn’t one there and was told someone would call me back…no one did. I did not upgrade my membership nor was informed about a yearly charge. I physically went to the Raritan location and was met by a staff member who refused to help me (as he was sipping on his smoothie) was downright disrespectful and completely unprofessional. I was told there was no manager and then miraculously one appeared. I asked about the charges was told I had to call corporate. I asked to cancel. She was truly awful. No customer service skills nor people skills. I asked for confirmation of my cancellation and was told I would get a email from corporate….one week later my membership is still active, no email no response from corporate. I never ever write negative reviews because quite frankly I don’t have the time. Oh and did I mention we all paid our dues during the Covid shut down and when this location had to shut down because it suffered loss due to a flood? Yes, we did without any form of compensation. Great way to run a business and reward loyalty. Once again I will try and cancel my membership. I will be filing complaints and giving negative reviews wherever I can and to whomever I can.

Here is my rant about this gym. It used to be a good gym. Then the flood happened and I switched to Manville. Now Manville is shutting down and the whole crowd has been pushed to Raritan. Go to the gym at 7pm and I bet you will have to wait at least 15 minutes between machines. Oww and how could I forget, you have to wait at least 20min to get a hold of someone from front desk. There is much more but this is enough for a google review.

The worst gym experience I have ever had. Poor equipment and layout. Only used this gym in a pinch because it was cheap. The worst part was the staff and management that lied to me countless times while trying to cancel my membership due to relocating. I moved out of state and called to cancel my membership. Staff informed me that it was cancelled. The next month, I was billed for membership. Upon calling, they apologized and told me I would be canceled and refunded. No confirmation, etc... next thing I know I was never refunded and charged a second month in a row. Upon calling the 3rd time, I spoke with management and stayed on the phone until I was sent email verification of my cancellation, which they eventually did complete. I now have to file a complaint with their parent company and my credit card company to get refunded for the last two months. While it is not a ton of money, it is inexcusable that staff members simply lie to customers. Would recommend finding another gym in the area.

I am quite disappointed on the lack of follow up employees have ensuring health guidelines are being followed by guests. During these scary times, the gym is a place i personally want to be able to feel comfortable with knowing my health /safety is paramount. A lot of guests wear their masks incorrectly and others simply haven’t been wearing it. Staff in the front are on their phones instead of ensuring everyone is following the rules. It makes me question the whole establishment in general and how clean they are keeping it. It is a shame to know the girl in the front desk didn’t know when her manager would be available. I advised her i would be calling on Thursday (as she “thought” is the day he goes in) to share my experience in this particular gym.
Please do better, a personal spray bottle given during check in doesn’t suffice when masks are not being mandatory or properly worn.

After a month or two of visiting this gym daily, I must say I am very impressed. The staff are very welcoming, as well as professional even during the peak hours. Having started with little to no expectations, I find myself looking forward to my next session the second I leave. I joined two months ago, and love it. I’m not giving anything up as compared to the fancier gyms. If anything, I like the feel of this place better. Whether you are a newbie looking to get in shape, or a hard-core fitness junkie, this gym has all you need. And all of this is just $20 per month — amazing!

My only complaint is that you have to pass right by the locker-room entrance when walking from the shower to the lockers. I don’t mind that people in the hallway can see me walk by in a towel, but it still doesn’t seem right. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an easy fix. (This is only an issue for the men’s locker room, as far as I know).

I use one of the rooms when it’s empty for certain workouts and they turned the lights off one time and told me I couldn’t use it for absolutely no reason. After that I just stopped going because I only had like 2 months left on the contract. I rarely if ever give ratings, let alone a 5 star one to boot. I have been a Retro Fitness member for 7 years. Even though I have a location closer to my home, I prefer the one in Raritan. The staff there are so professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and very attentive. The gym itself is always in working order, and clean. Machines never have a long down time if broken, but keep in mind sometimes parts need to be placed on order, and this falls out of the hands of the manager. I hope that the owner keeps the current manager, because she is so amazing, and keeps the gym running like clock work. Lastly, you won't regret working out here, and making it your home gym as I did.

The new manager, Tyler, is amazing! He takes care of any problems and is very friendly!! I love going to this gym because they are fully equipped for all the exercises that I want to do! The day care is great and the kids always seems to have a good time. Melissa, a personal trainer, is so knowledgeable and nice! She really gives you motivation to keep pushing forward. I don't like to complain but, you can see you have to climb a mountain now in just to get up to the gym. No big deal but, have signs saying were the gym is lol .
The Staff WAS NOT FRIENDLY AT ALL. In Manville they were much more personable.
I just thought it was very very dumpy and, it actually looks really nice from the outside.
IF YOU CAN GO TO MANVILLE go to that one. Ok, I will be honest. I use to go to GOLDS gym for 4 year's so THIS IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE FOR ME. Golds is so family oriented.

Feedback/Compliment for staff member personal trainer Melissa known as (Baby-Gains training). As a certified personal trainer, I will say that Melissa is definitely an elite personal trainer. You can't help notice when she is training her clients because you not only she her professionalism in action but also see her clients genuinely enjoy their workouts.

If you are in need of a personal trainer, you would be a fool not use her. I would highly recommend her as she has a contagious and an overly positive attitude towards what she does. These traits are extremely rare and Retro is extremely lucky to have someone like her.

Been a member for 2 years. They've been through 5 managers. There was no soap in the men's bathroom for 2 days straight. It's always dirty. The tanning closet has no ventilation and is broiling hot. There are maxi pad wrappers and trash under the booth for a month now. No chair. Double charged on two separate occasions. Dont sign up here.

Do not sign up for the yearly contract. They will give you false information to get you sign up but then you'll be stuck with it and won't be able to do anything about it. I talked to the manager and even she refused to do anything about my situation. Hopefully this review helps someone out there who hasn't joined this gym yet. Maybe the other retro is better but not this one.

This retro location is on the smaller side. Compared to other gyms the equipment is a lot closer together and there does not appear to be a lot of open space for free weights or any other types of non equipment exercises.

Staff happens to be very friendly. I do not encounter any equipment that is broken and if it is the turnaround until it is repaired seems to be quite fast.

Has a abs room detached from the regular gym. It has room to walk around wothout being knoked down by other machines.
Few Staff member aren't that great but most are very nice and friendly.
The ones who aren't the best,
They are usually mad and aren't nice to the customer. I knoe that Workin at a low paying job isn't the nicest thing but you can't be mad at nice customers unless they are rude.

Am very upset with this place. Sometimes the machine have out of order. Then elevator is always out of Order. Plus I been trying to update my credit card information. My agreement number doesn’t work and I called about the problem got left on for 25 min. Am about to quit this gym

The main issue today, no toilet paper in the ladies locker room. Not a single square. This is unacceptable. Other issues include, ABC, NBC, and CBS not available for over a week on the TVs. This has happened in the past but not sure why. The ledge by the window in front of the treadmills is filled with a thick layer of dust. They should consider getting adjustable shades or curtains to block the sun on the treadmill windows. It is brutal sometimes. I would use the treadmills that face the other way but out of the 4, I think only 1 gets TV reception and not even all of the channels. Maybe the flyer I saw to hire some new/additional staff will fix these issues.

The best part about Retro is my personal trainer Melissa. She brings so much good energy to the gym and is always smiling! I've seen such an amazing difference since I started working with her. She's extremely encouraging, knowledgable, always ready to help, and challenges me in every workout. If you're looking for personal training, she's your girl! Seriously - look no further!

I've been going to this Retro for about 2 years now and just recently signed up for personal training. The gym is great, the gym is always clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. The personal trainers are great. My trainer Melissa is fantastic. Thanks to her I'm always anxious to get back in the gym. I recommend this gym and signing up for training to all my friends. Worth every penny!

I received a mailer from Retro for a free week trial back in January. I decided to give them a try.

I was amazed at the how warm and welcoming the staff was. Javon immediately greeted me and helped me sign up. I was then introduced to Fitness Director, Melissa for a fitness assessment. She makes Retro members feel like they’re her family. She knows everyone by name and is always looking to help. Anyone who knows Melissa has heard her say, “ I got you”. You can tell she loves what she does and is really amazing at it!

I use to belong to Orange Theory but left them for Retro. The friendly and knowledgeable Melissa and staff is what won me over to make the switch.

Poorly run gym. Great size, has the equipment, however many things that are broken take months to get fixed. I left the gym for a new gym that opened nearby. I am STILL getting charged (it's been 3 months) after I cancelled. I called back and the lady I spoke to said "the manager left, we're hiring a new one and there is no one else who can refund your money. It's going to take some time." This was AFTER I cancelled in person and signed documents noting the termination. This is ridiculous, not a single person knows how to cancel a membership and return charges?

They want you to send a certified letter to close your account after 12 months contract. They do this so they can keep charging you and eventually push things to collections if you don’t play by their rules. They care more about $20 bill then they do about their members.

I was initially unsure about joining this gym, but so glad I did...and that’s why I’m writing this review. Hours and location are convenient. Lots of space and no issue with over-crowding. For the most part, friendly staff. Generally I might have given 4 stars, but the personal trainers are truly what I want to rave about. Melissa is one of the most knowledgeable and empowering trainers I have worked with...and I’ve worked with quite a few. She’s motivating and encouraging, fun yet focused. Even to get that basic gym knowledge, I suggest training sessions with Melissa. I guarantee you will feel good about what your doing for yourself.

Please think twice before you join with a personal trainer!!!! they would tell you... "you can cancel anytime" it's a lie, they would make it impossible for you to cancel the training session, you would have to bring a doctor's note saying you can't train, but the funny part is... they don't ask for any medical history or doctor's note for you to join in with a personal trainer. They are a scam and they cover each other's back, ABC financial and the trainers are in this scam together.
