I canceled my membership with this Gym in July. Was paid up to date with the last payment received 7 days before I canceled. They continued non stop calling me with their automated system saying I owed them money. Now they went as far as a collection service on a canceled membership trying to pocket grab another payment. I see most of their members in the gym Im currently going to. Probably why they are fishing for payments!

How great is the customer service at Retro in Toms River? let me tell you a story this morning at the gym I’m getting ready to leave. I’m at the front desk and Christina, who is working says to me there’s a guy who ordered a shake and now I can’t find him. It’s just sitting here I said he’ll probably be back So Christina says no it’s just that his shake is sitting here and it won’t taste as good as if he took it right away. That’s just one example, Catherine, Christina, and two girls that I’ve just met. Eleana and Emily are all wonderful. Super nice and joy to see when I go to work out. The equipment is excellent, and the atmosphere is welcoming.

I am never going back to this location. The one woman would not let my little brother and I workout. She says slides are not allowed but I see so many other people wearing slides and she won’t even bother them. She told us to leave so we canceled our memberships and will not be coming back.

Equipment is dirty. I have brought it to at least 4 staff members attention over the last month or 2 . Still nothing was done to correct the issue. My wife stopped going because of this. The owner responded to my review and stated they would promptly look into this. Nothing was done as the problem still exists. My wife and I will be leaving Retro Fitness this week and we will be joining another Gym. This would never have happened if the owner did what he said he would do. You may want to take your members complaints more seriously.

Went in for the first time 1-23-25 as they opened and was greeted by Dylan, the guy is friendly, helpful, considerate, usually you walk into a gym and the person doesn’t even look up from their phone. The locker rooms were clean and smelled great, the showers were clean, the gym smelled great no nasty smell like you can find some places, then you workout and see this place has a reverse hyper ( great for lower back issues that everyone has ) , that’s incredible only ever seen those in a few specialized places, as well as the self powered treadmill, it’s crazy the unique pieces this place has. If you’re in the area and looking for an affordable gym that’s not going to feel like you have another damn car payment with how expensive gyms have gotten, this is your place. 10/10 couldn’t recommend higher.

First let me start by saying that I am not someone who likes to give negative reviews for fun. If I am not happy with a service or something else, I normally just move along. I will, however, give a positive review when it is deserved. Unfortunately, this is not one of those times. My wife and I signed up for a 16 week challenge at the Retro Gym in Toms River, NJ in April. I have driven past many times and was actually looking forward to joining due to its close proximity to my job and home. The very first time we actually went in to work out is when I realized what a terrible mistake this was. I went to use the bathroom and was hit with a horrendous stench, like it hadn't been cleaned in awhile. I went to wash my hands, most of the faucets had worn handles, one of them was not even working. Paper towels all over the floor. It looked more like the floor of a nightclub at around 3 AM when the lights come on. You could definitely tell it hadn't been cleaned in some time. I warned my wife about using the bathroom unless she really needed to. Onto the equipment....just about every machine in this place has rips and tears in the padding. The padding is so worn out that there are jagged edges that actually ripped a few pairs of my wife's yoga pants. The handles that are used to attach to the cable machines are all completely worn out. They actually squeak when you use them. The metal indentations that are imbedded into the metal are completely worn out and smooth. Those little indentations are there so your hands don't slip while using the equipment. I have been a gym rat for a very long time...it takes a long time for human touch to wear out metal. That tells me that these handles have been here since this place opened. The rope attachments are frayed and there are only a couple of them. The safety locking knobs that are used to adjust the height/position of the pulleys have no pull knobs, you have to grab the metal stud that the knob screws onto to move the cable pulleys. There are 4 exercise bikes...one of them was not working for the entire 16 weeks that we were working out ...no out of order sign, or equipment out of service sign anywhere...just a bike that does not work. The kettle bells are so worn out that you have to guess what weight they are by size compared to the ones that actually did have a number still on them. All in all, this place is not a very well-kept gym. It is obvious that they put no money into it. We have since joined Planet Fitness and are 100% happy. Do yourself a favor, before you join this place, take a good look around. A really good look.

The gym hours are set for a reason and on more than 1 occasion in the last 2 months, the gym has failed to open at the time it should. It does not open a few minutes after, there have been occasions where it has been an hour or so past and there is a huge group of members waiting to get in and the lights are off and the doors are locked. Of course there is no way to contact corporate and there is never an actual manager at the location to speak with about this ongoing issue. This is getting ridiculous as now this is impeding on all of our schedules. May be minor to the staff, but this is a massive inconvenience and truthfully not right when you are paying a membership fee to workout here. This gym has really went downhill since the new ownership took over, I miss the old owner, who actually cared about the members and the location.

UPDATE TO THE OWNERS GENERIC RESPONSE: sitting outside the gym again and the gym isn’t open….. so you are very obviously not taking this seriously. Awful business owners.

My friend bought a membership three weeks ago. manager said with membership he got he could bring a guest. we went those three weeks almost everyday using guest pass a lot. today my sister went to buy a membership the same one my friend has. she can bring her friend and the guy John who was working today was very rude. he said there is not membership that allows that. he refused to call the manager to speak and ask to make sure. he was jelling at my sister to the point that she joined crunch gym better in TR. and she can bring a guess there with no extra charge. stay away from this gym . people here are so rude and unprofessional. never coming back here again. i suggest go join a different gym. a couple around that i’m sure they will treat you better .

Sent a cancellation letter IN person due to

I’m semi retired so I try to go at off peak times; and so far I haven’t had any issues with excessive wait times. If you are looking to sign up for a gym membership in Toms River, pick any gym other than Retro Fitness. The management does not care about it's customers or their safety.

A friend of mine has been repeatedly harassed by a middle age man while at the gym, and management has done nothing about it. They have been notified multiple times about these occurrences and refuse to take any action. It's extremely embarrassing and calls into question the competency of the people who run this place. STAY AWAY!

Gym is very clean and 99% of the equipment is new and usually in perfect working order. Traffic can get up there at peak times but that's the nature of the gym, at its busiest it's still better than most gyms. Zen Den is a nice perk. Multi gym use and free guests make it a great deal for anyone.

This is a really decent gym with good equipment and not overly crowded in the mornings. The place is kept really clean by the guy that rides his bike to work there, although I don't know his name. Dylan at the front desk during the week is always so friendly, smiles and greets everyone personally. These 2 guys are huge assets to this gym and should definitely be acknowledged by the owners/managers.

If I could leave a negative star I would after several attempts both in person and by mail my college son whose membership got transferred to this club when brick closed and they decided to unfreeze his membership and charge him a whole year of dues won’t waive last payment!!!!! When I first joined a few months ago everything was fine. About two weeks ago on a Sunday the gym didn’t open on
time. I waited an hour then left. I spoke to management afterwards. I was told it was a scheduling problem.
Now today Sunday the gym hasn’t opened again. I have been waiting in the parking lot for thirty minutes so far. I ended up leaving after waiting a total of 45 minutes.
I drive about 30 minutes each way to come here.

I love the gym especially in the mornings everyone is cool except for the girl that is there Sunday morning. She cannot be bothered to put a smile on and is constantly arguing on the phone with someone. I asked to tan one day while she was on her cellphone at the desk and she said she set it and I had two call twice from inside the booth to get it turned on. Her head is not in the game.

This location recently changed hands. The place is clean and new ownership are investing in the facility albeit very small and rectifying deferred maintenance on the equipment which is somewhat dated, but serviceable.

The front desk staff do greet you, but do not engage, I've been here almost a year now and have dealt with a Matt Trost and gave him honest feedback. I have yet to meet any trainer in the place, no one on staff engages you ever.

The most popular piece of equipment they have is an older outdated elliptical that there is only one of in the whole place.

Most recently their WiFi no longer works. I've reached out to Matt and basically he told me that he's sorry they're not meeting my expectations and that (I'm paraphrasing now) I can certainly leave.

Best advice I think.

The only reason to stay is Chris, the facility person, he keeps the place immaculate (as you can in a gym).

I haven't belonged to a gym in like 10 years. Retro Fitness makes working out very easy. The Toms River location staff is helpful and pleasant. I want to love this gym. It's convenient and close but a few positives and a few negatives. Positives is great equipment. 90 percent of the staff are pleasant and friendly. I like that this gym takes the covid serious by required the members to mask up. Negatives first some staff are miserable the one trainer sal who walks around like he's a body builder or Conor McGregor. I don't understand why he has such a chip on his shoulder. Also the cleaner. He is never friendly he walks around like he hates his life and doesn't want to be there. Like I said before 90 percent of your staff is top notch. These other 2 should seek employment else where. if I owned that gym they would be gone they are bad for business. Maybe go to bayville and watch Diane the female cleaner there she is pleasant and friendly. That is my opinion lastly are we ever going back to better hours on the weekends some people don't get out of work til 3 or 4 pm. Thank you

Today, on my way out of the gym, I had to stop and congratulate Allison and Tom on the stellar job they are doing with the facility! As a director within a recreation department, I have been working closely with the health department and CDC. As we all know, the guidelines have been daunting. However, Retro Fitness in Toms River is truly the cleanest and most well-run facility I have been to since quarantine ended. To say their staff is doing an excellent job cleaning, maintaining and screening, is an understatement. All of their equipment, disinfectants, floors, and restrooms look brand new! The length that the staff has gone to in order to safely open is nothing short of impeccable!

Very clean, friendly staff. Marianne's spin class is great. She is an excellent instructor, very personable and individualizes workouts as needed. Marianne has a contagious smile and makes everyone comfortable regardless of your spinning skill
