We love Gravity Vault! Great vibes. Nice range of climbs. I do wish they offered more classes to improve technique though. Once you get belay certified, you’re pretty much on your own to figure things out. Very much so choose-your-adventure.

I have been climbing at Gravity Vaults for two years now. While this location is not my home gym because it's a little farther from where I live, it's one of my favorite ones to visit. They have so much to offer....top ropes, boulders, lead climbing, speed climbing, moon board, yoga, fitness gym, etc. I took both the Belay class and the Lead class at this gym and am now certified in both! This is a great place to get the full indoor climbing experience.
A couple of weeks ago, I attended this gym's Anniversary party. GV Hoboken's continuous Anniversary party posts on Instagram about the prizes, sponsors, spotify playlist, etc, got me really excited about the event. I had the day off of work, and I canceled all evening activities to attend it. It was worth it. I entered as many contests as I could. There was even a crossword competition, which I've never seen at any gym before. I won two free guest passes! I was also encouraged to try the Moon board for the first time. It's definitely something I want to work on again. The set up of the prizes in the gift bags at the front desk was inspiring. I really wanted to win one, and I did! I can't wait to go to next year's party!

Been eyeballing the place for almost a month after dropping of someone to their job nearby and wanted try it so bad. Brought my son and the the young man who helped was so nice(not sure the spelling of his name, Emanuel I think. Sorry) 🥴Pleasant, patient and knowledgeable. I want to point out my son is Autistic and the experience was everything to us. I hope to get a membership if not be back soon hopefully.

Update June 2025:
2/5 stars
No improvement since the last review. This place is run by beginners and youth team who have no awareness of safety or climbing etiquette. Weekend kids birthday parties are loud and obnoxious, with kids running around, screaming and getting right under climbers.
The routes change every few months. Rating is inconsistent.
I'd rather make the trek to Manhattan or LIC to climb nowadays. Bye GV Hoboken
--------------------------------
I love this gym! The climbers and staff are all very friendly and positive. However, they host kids birthday parties often, and the kids and their parents seem to have no idea how dangerous it is to have running around the gym and on the crash pads under bouldering walls. Even though the other climbers and staff keep telling them to keep the kids within their assigned area but they don't listen. Some staff have to physically chase after the kids to get them to stay away from falling climbers.
I really enjoy everything else about this gym and don't want to leave a bad review, so took a star off. But the safety issue is to be addressed seriously by management, please!!!!! It'll be too sad to only put in strict rules after an accident happens.

They’re allergic to turning the AC on. It’s consistently way too hot here in the summer and they’re seemingly doing nothing to resolve this.
Updates 1Y later: very poor staff oversight of children’s birthday parties, barely turn on the AC when it’s boiling in the gym, getting slower at resetting rope and boulder routes, insufficient cleaning of holds when resetting the routes (I see staff setting new routes with very chalked holds), and the gym brushes have had 0 brush hair for the past 2 years.
Additionally, it’s recently been very warm and they yet again refuse to turn the AC on and it’s between 77-79F in the evening in the gym.

After climbing at this gym for several months, my summary is that it could be great, but I am just disappointed.
This gym does not clean their holds (I have seen route setters use chalky holds when setting new routes), plus many holds need to be replaced (worn out with no texture left). The cracks are very chalky (again, never cleaned), so there is minimal grip. The routes will stay up for months (some as long as 4-5 months); climbing can get boring since there is an infrequent route setting. The picture in this review was taken mid-March 2025, and these routes are from the end of November/beginning of December 2024.
Aside from the poor climbing experience, the facility isn't great. It is often too warm, especially when climbing in spots near the window without a fan.
Some poorly trained staff allow beginner groups to climb on overlapping routes. Staff will start vacuuming/cleaning bathrooms over an hour before the gym closes, which makes climbing really unpleasant (the vacuums are very loud).
I wouldn't recommend it to regular or experienced climbers, but it's okay if you go infrequently or are a beginner.

I bought a one-month special membership at Gravity Vault in January. Overall, I would rate my experience 4 stars. I deducted two stars for my belay certification class but added one star for the excellent service provided by a staff member named Julia.
Most of the staff are friendly and helpful, but I had a mixed experience during my belay certification class. As a beginner with almost no climbing experience and a non-native English speaker, I found the class a bit overwhelming. The instructor spoke very quickly and used a lot of climbing terminology that I wasn't familiar with. I struggled to follow along and felt somewhat ignored since I couldn't provide feedback immediately. I wish the instructor had slowed down a bit and made sure everyone could keep up. It would really help beginners like me feel more comfortable and included.
On the positive side, Julia was incredibly patient, clear, and friendly when testing my belaying skills and answering my questions. She didn’t mind when I didn’t use the correct climbing terms and made sure I felt welcomed and understood. Because of her, I came back two more times when she was working.
Gravity Vault has a friendly environment overall, and I’d suggest that instructors consider slowing down a bit during training sessions to make sure everyone, especially beginners and non-native speakers, can follow along and have a better experience.

2-Person Staff Belay Date Nite was the highlight of my week! I learned something new and got a workout out of it! The physical and mental challenges together are so exhilarating, and I felt so safe in my harness! Shout-out to Liz, our staff belayer - She was so down to earth and chill. It really made you feel like she's been doing this awhile and had full control of the situation. She made sure we felt safe and catered the experience to our needs/desires! We'll definitely be back. 😃

I recently visited The Gravity Vault in Hoboken, and it was an awesome experience! My belay was super helpful and kept encouraging me to push myself and try more climbs. The staff were all really friendly, and the prices were pretty reasonable too.
The whole place was clean and well-maintained, which made the experience even better. I had a lot of fun and definitely want to go back to try more challenging climbs—and maybe even work toward becoming a certified rock climber!

Preface, I was a member for a few years. No hard feelings here, just honest $.02.
Great for birthday parties, because that seems to be all that's cared about. It's also great if you're just starting out and getting used to being up at heights. Just be careful about kids running under you while you belay or under your boulder problem, you eventually will land on a kid.
If you have have the means to and want to get serous about improving your climb technique/strength, get up to Goat in Hackensack, or go down to Newark if you just want to boulder, hit up Method.
Though, I believe they do still have a Moonboard if that's all you're looking for.
I live in Hoboken and have a multitude of reasons that I won't get in to here, why I haven't been back since the beginning of COVID. Instead, I drive past it a few days a week to go to Goat.

I have been a member of Gravity Vault for 2 years. This is the gym I first started at. The location, staff, and vibe are all amazing, and I love to call it my home gym. With my love for the gym, I think it needs a more structured route-setting system. There are great route setters in the gym whose work I truly appreciate. However, the overall route-setting process is unstructured without a head setter. Compared to the new gyms, such as Goat in Hackensack, I don't see GV Hoboken promoting/uplifting its staff and setter as it should.
So, with appropriate compensation, securing a stable route-setting system is vital for this gym, as the climbing industry is expanding yearly.

When I got there we were partnered with Andreas whom was very kind and patient throughout the entire time. He gave us some tips on how to climb and let go when coming down he even told us about the upcoming events they have going on. We are coming back for sure!

Tl;dr: male staff walked into ladies room without asking. GV please bring attention to this. ladies be careful in the mean time
GV has always been my top choice for climbing. However, as I go more often, I noticed that their staff would go into the lady's locker room for cleaning *without knocking or asking*.
I was changing in the locker room after they announced the gym will be closing in one hour. There is a guy in staff shirt just walked in with earbuds. He saw me looked at him but didn't stop or turn around to leave. I was offended and yelled "excuse me". He didn't say anything but went into one of the stalls. I then finished changing in the shower since it has a curtain and I didn't want to use the stall next to hime. (There are three stalls and he went into the middle one) After I left the shower room and turned on the faucet, he came out from the stall and left the locker without saying anything.
I felt confused and offended. It is also violating my privacy. I felt unsafe changing in the gym or going to the ladies locker if people can just walk in without feeling guilty or ashamed. I would expect that GV trained the staff properly and enforced rules being a big gym in the area.
This was not the first time. I have seen this same staff walk in as I walked out of the ladies room without knocking or saying anything before, all towards closing time. I asked in the community, some other female climbers said they encountered the same. After sharing the features of the person, it was probably the same guy. Looks young in age (early 20s? If not younger), curly hair. Probably 5'5 -5'7, thin. Medium brown (?) eyes.

I signed up the break camp for my two children. I must say it was extremely disappointing experience.
First, no one assistance to provide climbing shoes and harnesses for the kids. The staff seemed disinterested and indifferent, leaving both kids and parents frustrated.
Second, the class started 15 minutes late, with only one instructor initially present to oversee a group of 8 kids. The second instructor showed up 45 minutes later. As a result, one of my children waited 50 minutes for the first climb. Throughout the supposed two-hour session which cost $136, my children had a measly number of climbs – one did five climbs, while the other squeezed in just six.
In summary, this was the worst camp experience we've had. The combination of unpreparedness, tardiness, and a lack of concern for the participants' experience has ensured that we will not be returning. I would strongly advise others to think twice before signing their children to the disappointment we encountered at this rock climbing place.

My biggest issue with this gym is their youth team (or their youth class? Im not sure what they actually are) and the lack of climbing etiquette from them. If you come early evening after work, it’s packed with middle/high schoolers. They often hog up the entire section of the gym, making it impossible for other climbers to use that wall. They are also running around, doing problem after problem, without giving a turn to any other person who might be waiting. I actually have witness them saying “excuse me” to a climber in mid-climb, making him get off a wall so they can get a turn (I think they were playing some sort of a team game), not to mention screaming each others’ names. Them running around on the mat also makes it very dangerous for the climbers jumping down. Me and other climbers have exchanged so many awkward looks because of them. I’ve been to many gyms where youth teams climb but this is the single most chaotic place where they seem to lack adult supervision and manners.
There are also weird rules in place like, they allow you to climb with your sneakers (which is kinda gross) on but dont let you go into the bathroom with climbing shoes. However, this is more minor.

I was an annual member pre-covid, and only just renewed my membership after moving away and returning to the area 2 years later. Unfortunately, the same problems that existed then still persist.
For one, the entire youth team surely needs to be taught some god damn etiquette. Honestly, I blame their coach/supervisor/proctor or whoever the hell is supposed to be responsible for them. I was a member at Brooklyn Boulders, Method Climbing, Goat Climbing, and Vital, and yet, I have NEVER seen a youth team so obnoxious, loud, and rude. They literally hoard the entire gym every evening, making it impossible for other members who come after work to enjoy their climbing session. They also constantly run around even when there are climbers right above them—do they not learn about safety hazards and basic human manners? If you wanna avoid this madness, come in the morning and skip work, or come at night so that you have no social life.
Secondly, this place resets a wall once every like 3 months (literally). Never have I ever seen a gym reset walls so slowly. I heard they don’t have in-house setters and maybe that’s the problem? Also probably speaks to such lack of consistency in their grading and setting in general. ALSO, you’ll sometimes see random holds just on a wall that’s not even a part of any problem. Guess what? It’s for their YOUTH TEAM so they can “train”. Suffice to say, members and visitors are secondary to their precious youth team.
Lastly, their bathrooms never have soap, so bring your own handsoap.

I used to LOVE going to the Gravity Vault in Hoboken--I'd go before work multiple times a week to get a good bouldering session in. Tons of walls to climb, solo or with a friend. Lots of bouldering walls that were rotated out regularly.
Then last winter (~Nov 2022) came, and they announced their "winter hours"; okay, I can understand not everyone wants to be at work at 7 am, that's fine, especially in the cold. But then those winter hours became standard.
I'd love nothing more than to pay for another yearly membership; even if they opened at 8am, I'd still be able to climb for 30-40 minutes before needed to be back working by 9am. Opening at 9 just means I'll never be able to go back, and it really sucks because it's just this location that opens this late. If I lived in Montclair, next to one of their other locations, there wouldn't be an issue since they open at 7.

We celebrated my son's 5th birthday here at Gravity Vault Hoboken. The climbing party was a lot of fun for all! Most, if not all, kids are first timers but that didn't present any issues. They were all excited from the moment they wore the harnesses. Belayers were very attentive, they provided easy instructions and encouraged the kids to keep climbing. After the climb, kids and parents did a few rounds of tug of war and that just added tons of fun!
In addition to the the climbing activity, we had a short party in the yoga room. The staff were fast to assist in setting up the tables and chairs. Except for no piñatas and alcohol, there are almost no restrictions for room usage. We were able to bring food, drinks, decors, and music in there. We had a total of 30 guests and the yoga room was just the right size for us, the floor to ceiling window was a good add to the ambience.
Over all it was a superb event at Gravity Vault! Izzy, Bar, Brian and the rest of the staff are all amazing.

I've been rock climbing for almost 7 years and this was the least safe I have ever felt in a gym. We went Sunday afternoon to lead climb, but did not end up doing so due to the large number of inexperienced people walking under climbers, and the loud volume of music and screaming people that made communication while leading difficult and unsafe. We saw people lead climbing incorrectly, and witnessed an accident where the climber fell from over halfway up the wall onto the ground due to improper belaying. The staff reacted slowly and poorly, with one staff member shouting to the 10+ staff behind the desk who initially did not hear him over the noise. This accident would have been prevented if the many, many staff members had been paying attention to the people climbing and ensuring that members possessed the proper technical skills to safely lead climb, belay, etc.
In addition, the boulder climbs were awkward and inconsistently graded, and many of the problems were unclear due to poor labeling. Safety-wise, there was an upside-down bat hang move at the top of a V3 boulder. At that grade, many climbers are still learning how to fall safely, and encouraging an upside-down move at the top of the wall lends itself to accidents. The lack of down climb ladders, particularly from boulders that ended in top outs, was also an issue that made down climbing and bailing from hard moves riskier and more difficult.
Generally, it did not seem like the facility was well-maintained. The vast majority of the bouldering holds were coated with a dense layer of chalk and shoe rubber grime. There were also many "spinners" (stuck holds) on the wall, which got in the way of some moves.
A nice feature of this gym is their speed climbing wall. However, we did not get the opportunity to climb it since staff were encouraging inexperienced people to try it, which makes no sense considering it is graded around a 5.10 and unrealistic for new climbers to be able to make progress on.
Overall, despite the beautiful facility itself, we did not enjoy our time there. This is primarily due to the lack of staff direction to new climbers in teaching them how to safely navigate around a climbing gym and their gross negligence in preventing a serious climbing accident.

The place is amazing. The architecture of the place makes you feel you are between mountains. What I loved the most that there are safety instructions. I really enjoyed my experience here. I encourage you to try this activity one time at least in your life to make muscles 💪 and toned arms.

Impressive facility. Apart from the biblical sized walls, the gym has a surprising weight array (barbells, dumbbells, medicine balls. Also plenty of specialized exercise equipment. Make sure you call ahead and get a belay class in or you’ll be limited to bouldering

We visited this rock climbing gym on our east coast trip. We paid $28 per person for bouldering. Based on my experience with other gyms this place is pricey and it does not offer a lot of bouldering space. The easy grades ( V1, V2, V3) were mainly strength based and awkward. There were some interesting V4. However, I found some V4 easier to start than some V1 or V2.
I was disappointed with this place and I would not recommend it.

Went for the first time last week and had a great experience. My husband and I did the hour with a staff member. We had Arsenio and he was amazing. He was very knowledgeable, helpful, and showed us a variety of routes for our first time. We will definitely be back and recommend this as a fun date night experience.

Amazing place to Boulder and rock climbing do make an appointment with an instructor if you going for the first time or else they won’t let you rock climb for safety reasons then you will just have to Boulder on the small walls which is also fun but for the big walls you need to be certified by an instructor!!

Had a great experience! My boyfriend and I got a private instructor for 1 hr and it was a lot of fun. Our instructor was Sam and he was super helpful, encouraging, and patient. We were both total beginners and had never done this before so we weren’t sure what to expect but it was great. The place was very clean including the bathrooms and lockers, and everyone was masked properly. Rental gear and harnesses worked well too.

Yesterday I went Yo the gravity vault in Hoboken for the very first time. I had Never gone rock climbing before and had no idea what to expect. Upon arrival we checked in got our shoes and equipment and was ready to climb. My anxiety was through the roof and I was Super shaky as I am Terribly afraid of heights. Not to mention the walls that we would be climbing were really really high. Our instructor Samson was absolutely amazing and very informative and helpful. Once I climbed The first wall I was At the top shaking wondering how I was Getting back down. He was very calm and knew exactly what to do and say on how to calm me down. After the first wall I was Ready to climb all the other walls inside the gravity vault. He was as also very cool and down to earth. Gave great advice while climbing as well. Because of him I will Definitely be a returning customer and request him as an instructor everytime I go! If you are planning a trip to the gravity vault Samson is a great instructor to request!

I went here to start the long process of leaning how to to climb both indoors and outdoors safely. Bryan Ko a member of the management team has been super helpful and genuine. He was nice enough to take some time out of his day to show be some beginning tips. I think any level of climber will feel very comfortable at gravity vault. I can recommend with confidence Bryan and his staff will be there to help you with anything.

A great place to do some rock climbing before trying it on a actual mountain. Never been to such a place and the experience was amazing. The staff is very hospitable and they are generous enough to offer us Rock Climbing and Bouldering both under the same price for a friend’s birthday. Highly recommended for a team’s event or any outings with friends. Solid experience and worth the money. They have lockers which are free to put your belongings as well

Not a bad gym by any means. There’s plenty of room, two floors worth of walls and equipment. It does get pretty busy at the peak times so be ready to spend a bit of time there to get your full climbs in.
Staff is helpful, they’re experienced climbers and actually know what they’re talking about rather than just being hired desk workers. However they don’t really give off the most welcoming vibe sometimes. Facilities are clean and they change some of the problems (rock routes) frequently.
Great gym to start out at!

I don't ever write reviews, but I was floored by this experience with the most unwelcoming, unfriendly, and unhelpful staff I have ever encountered at a climbing gym. No greeting, no "how can we help you", nothing. Is everyone depressed? Did they all just get a pay cut? What in the world is going on here?
The gym itself is fine, pretty standard.
Visit was on 11/3/19 late morning.

First time here. Clean gym, biggest I've been to thus far in NJ. Only really got into climbing past few months and go once a week or so to other gyms. Took first time climber here as it was closer to them. Initial impression was very unwelcoming. Associate who checked us in had a "I wish I wasn't here / FML" attitude. Didn't interact them them afterwards so didn't ruin my experience. Other guy who gave us a quick bouldering orientation and belay check was cool. Overall, the place was great, had good variety of difficulties and interesting routes. Wish I can come back here again soon but the price for a day pass is pretty steep. Doesn't do promos like the other Gravity Vaults.

This gym is particularly great for solo climbers. They have lots of autobelays and move them around constantly. The facilities are clean, the staff is friendly, and the prices are great. The holds are all color coded and the routes are consistently rated.
My personal experience with fellow climbers there has been very pleasant as well. It is not competitive in the way I’ve found NYC gyms to be. On most days I’ve gone, I’ve ended up with a top rope partner. While you really don’t need one here, it’s been nice to make some new friends and get back into shape.
I’m so glad this gym is here!

Michael (who moved from FL) is the best instructor. He's super patient, friendly and has the best tips for climbing. It is a joy to work with him. We have scheduled 2 private sessions and always ask for him, he even came in on his day off. We appreciate him very much. I doubt we would have returned if it wasnt for him. Look forward to returning again soon

I booked an hour private session for two people for 55 bucks. Our instructor's name was Justin. Even though the facility looked cool, because of Justin, I'd say our experience was horrible. We were both completely new to climbing. Yet Justin didn't provide any kind of instructions. He just gave us the supplies and asked us to climb. He did not even bother to tell us what we should be mindful of in terms of the safety. Of course we felt scared. He then took us to the kid area I guess. He seemed extremely impatient and couldn't care less. We were very much uncomfortable having him standing there. So we ended up leaving the place within 20 minutes. During the whole 20 minutes, he did not even smile once! He just stood there pulling the ropes. No talking no smiles no instructions at all! We would never go back again!

For prospective members: The gym is new and the amenities are nice enough. But after being a member for over a year, I have experienced countless poor customer service from the staff.
This is from the random high school or college students they hire who lack basic knowledge or etiquette about climbing, to the complete lack of communication from management. It’s clear they don’t hire people who are climbers, nor train them enough. They also hold events and classes that get changed, cancelled, moved around without any notice to those signed up.
It's fine if you’re just looking for a place to climb for the day but they lack basic customer service when it comes to members.
If you have access to another gym, consider becoming a member there instead.

Great climbing facility in the Jersey city / Hoboken area. Split into 2 floors, the lower level is mostly rock climbing walls and a bouldering wall. The upper level is mostly bouldering with some rock climbing routes. They have about 8-10 auto belays that are rotated every few weeks.
The only negative point is that some of the holds have too much chalk and some of them look gunky.

I bought a Groupon for a two-hour belay class and booked it for a Sunday at 1 pm (you have to call ahead). Our instructor was Marcela and she was very knowledgeable and patient. The class had four people in total, including us, so it was nice that it was a small group. The class meets upstairs - it's also where all the kids' walls are so it can get a bit noisy, but it wasn't too bad overall.
First, they show you how to tie the knot, connect yourself to the rope, and how to belay. The class lasted a little over an hour. After that, you're free to climb for the rest of the day. There's also a small gym you could use. If you didn't come with a partner, there are certain stations that have an auto-belay machine available, or you can also use their bouldering walls. Marcela told us that they change up the courses every three months, so that's a nice touch if you're a member - you'll pretty much always have a different wall each time.
I had a lot of fun, even though my arms and sore (and even if little kids were zipping to the top faster than I could). Definitely am going to look into coming back for a few climbs.
