Beware of owners wife

Over the year that I was a member at the gym I had an extremely pleasant experience. Nothing but good things to say about staff and members. But that took a change when I had to contact the gym about canceling my membership. The woman who claimed to be the owners wife was extremely condescending, unprofessional and just overall rude. She ended up hanging up on me after I tried to "kill her with kindness" and said I will be flagged in their system. That does not affect me as I no longer live in NJ but it really is a shame that this is the way I had to end my relationship with this gym.

I was spoken to with disrespect and the owner claimed that I was lying about what a representative said to me. And before you come at my employment status, I moved out of state because of MY business and I have no employer. You should know this as I drove a bright pink Lamborghini hurcan with my brands logo all over it to your facility on a daily basis lol.

I visited Topshelf Fitness for a tour with Minde and was impressed by the unique, well-used equipment - not something you find in most gyms around here. The smoothie bar is a nice touch, using in-house products, and the vibe among gym-goers felt focused but approachable.

However, the space lacks dedicated areas for core work, resistance bands, or stretching - just a sliver of turf. What ultimately turned me away was the atmosphere. A female employee made a comment questioning my strength based solely on my appearance, and that was a deal-breaker. I may not fit a size 6, but I leg press 900 lbs. - so save the judgment. I didn't want to return to a place where I felt uncomfortable in my own skin. Vibe matters, and this one missed the mark.

I have been going to this gym for about 5 years and it is awesome. The owners care and quickly fix the equipment if anything is broken. The employees are friendly and easily recognize regulars and you can form friendships with them. They also are strict with re racking weights which is a common nuisance in other gyms like fitness factory when you don’t know who’s using a machine because people are to lazy to put their weights away. They are a local business that cares about their customers and give many things out to their patrons like free shakes and prizes. They are also very patriotic and extremely welcoming to all types of people especially first responders. Being a first responder myself and my brother being one to as firefighters it’s awesome to see many first responders and service members working out together and many American flags everywhere it also is 24 hours which is even better! Couldn’t recommend this gym more !

Bait and switch tactics: The website advertises $34.99 a month membership with no qualifiers required. I call to confirm that and am told that the $34.99 monthly rate is accessible after putting down $299. I understand that down payments are somewhat normal, however I expect that behavior from chains. There is also a yearly upkeep fee, which I would have hoped to be included in the membership. I wish the website was more transparent.

Gym itself: There is great equipment in the Rockaway location. The men's locker room is tiny, but sufficient. Bring your own lock. The layout is disjointed and confusing.

Edit to respond to owner:
After you spend $300, you can access three locations for $34.99 a month. However there is also a yearly $40 upkeep fee. You only become aware of this when signing up.

Nowhere on the website is a mention of the enrollment fee nor is there a mention of the yearly upkeep charge. There is only a line stating $34.99 a month. How is not bait and switch?

You also threaten to remove me as a member until I change the review. I don't agree with that type of behavior and is far from the family feel you aspire to attain.

Topshelf is the best gym I have been a member of and I have been a member of the $20per month to he $150 a month, give you towels, pools and try to have every amenity and machine gyms.

Topshelf feels like home away from home when I just get off work. And they make sure to have the amenities that matter. Little things like the meals and supplements being priced appropriately where every other gym always charges a convenience tax. Multiples of machines, new school and old unique ones, really good turf for athletes. Shower and Infrared saunas are always cleaned and maintained. Changing rooms with mirrors, Posing room as well.

Most importantly is the accountability the owners, staff, and even its members have , that makes this place different than others. Everyone likes coming “home” to clean place and they make it a point to follow the etiquette that makes the gym an enjoyable place for people of all fitness levels. In my opinion topshelf does a great job of that balance, better than any gym I have been a part of because the owners genuinely care and treat this place like home.

I love this gym. My brother has been a member for a while and back in the spring of this year I joined as well. The atmosphere is great, the equipment is always working, organized, and clean. The staff is very friendly as well as the other members, I’ve never felt unwelcome which was huge for me being pretty much a beginner with lifting. Being open 24/7 is so convenient and definitely one of my absolute favorite parts about this facility. The expansion they just did is awesome and now there’s even more space and equipment to use. Joining this gym has honestly been the best decision I’ve made in a while. It’s always clean, safe, and I feel like I accomplished something every time I walk out the door. Couldn’t recommend more!

Amazing gym and perfect environment conducive for growth and development. This gym has everything included too - a sauna, a posing room and nearly any machine you could fathom. It’s kept clean and organized and you never have to worry about your things being stolen; the owners are on top of everything and are very accessible if any accommodations are requested. I have been a member at TopShelf since April 2023, and I only use the Rockaway location, which is 5 mins from me.
Joining this gym has been one of the best recent decisions in my life. Tommy has an amazing model for how he runs his locations. This gym has the best selection of well-maintained equipment, clean workout areas, and great rules for gym etiquette. Members are friendly and have a great sense of ownership with their gym conduct, not slamming weights, re-racking their weights, wiping down sweaty equipment. The recent expansion has made an already great gym, even better.
Love that this gym is 24 hours, most days I get there by 5:00am and it is great having a safe gym to workout with other motivated people.

Called them weekend at about 1pm, wanted to know a few things about the gym before I went over. 1st call someone picked up, and hung up. Second call no answer. I posted on their instagram and the owner's snarky response was whether I ever stopped to think their phone lines weren't working (mind you, he could have said "I apologize but phone lines were down"). With service this horrific, this outfit will be looking for a bankruptcy lawyer soon, and I hope the trustee cleans them out of the excess fat.

It ain’t planet fitness. Was in town for work and stopped by top shelf. Absolutely loved it. There’s some big dudes in there and coming from my home gym of Exile, it was very similar. Warehouse dungeon kinda setting. More 100lb plates than treadmills. Made me feel right at home. 10/10 recommend if you wanna make some actual gains.

Okay so let’s start at the beginning and say that this gym is hands down one of the top gyms in NJ. They literally have every machine possible and the membership price is super cheap considering that you get 3 different gym locations for the price of one $35. You rarely see the equipment broken for longer than a week and this place kept me sane during our 2020 lockdown year. I was one of the original members who came here before the expansion and before they were a PMA and dude I can’t say enough at how well Tommy built this place over the years. Definitely one of my favorite places to lift and they are open 24/7. Come on man what else can I say. Another gym ran by a bodybuilder who is doing right by their members

I joined Topshelf Fitness recently. This gym without a doubt is better than any other gym within a 25 mile radius of Rockaway NJ. The staff are very outgoing. They have a protein shake bar, they sell protein, pre-workouts, and other gym supplements in house. Topshelf offers 24 hours access. It’s not super busy compared to most commercial gym where you have to wait 15 to 20 minutes to use a machine. They are super active on their social media for example they post about special deals they have going on, they give updates on renovations and also when equipment is fixed after it breaks, apparel to purchase. It is also easy to recognize that the owner cares very much about his establishment. He takes a lot of pride in it and willing to do anything to make sure his facility runs at its full potential 24/7. If you are serious about bodybuilding, losing weight or staying in shape, Top-shelf is where you need to be. There is a plethora gyms in Morris county but Top Shelf takes them all by storm.

Been a member since Hopatcong location with a slight detour during Covid. Now currently they have a rockaway location and soon to access the Stanhope location. First and foremost the owner’s Tommy and Liana are great as well as all of the staff. Friendly, positive environment. I joined the gym about a year ago , i was going through a crazy time in my life and when i tell you this gym made me feel like i was right at home. With the owners being some of the genuine, sweetest most caring people to all the members being so kind and helpful. I like this gym a lot. I don’t want to put a bad word on my previous gym, but the business hours were extremely limited. The hours didn’t accommodate me. I’m a nurse, and I need a 24-hour facility to get my workout. This one is perfect honestly, and the people, staff, and management are so welcoming and personable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a close-niche community. It’s nice to see that, especially since the pandemic. It was a depressing year for everyone, so it’s awesome to see everyone smiling and helping each other out. I like to also mention... that the women’s bathroom is immaculate. I like walking in, and smelling the freshness in the air. They provide sprays for you too, which is convenient. As far as the equipment goes, I like how they have many for you to choose from, and my favorite is their long turf. I love that the gym has plenty of room to move around. I don’t like being overcrowded haha. The ONLY CON I really have are the treadmills. I like to do my HIIT’s on the treadmill, but most of their incline/ramp features are broken. I addressed it with the front desk, but it hasn’t been resolved yet. Otherwise, I highly recommend this place.

Editing my review because the owner seems to miss the entire point of my complaint...

**I am not upset about being charged $34.99, or being charged at all even. I have absolutely no issue with paying a membership. I would even have been happy to pay my membership during the lockdown if I was given the option, but the gym chose to freeze memberships. My issue is that there has been zero communication with members not currently going to the gym, and when I did call to ask about procedures for freezing, etc. (after specifically being told that a notice would go out explaining everything), I got yelled at and talked to disrespectfully by the owner. I didnt call to complain about being charged, I simply called to ask if they were planning on sending out the notification, that I was previously told would get sent out, with all the information needed. The owner compared the membership to rent, saying that its my responsibility to pay my rent on time, but if you want to use that comparison, landlords dont just increase rent without notice or any communication. Maybe I am the only person that wrote a bad review, but I am for sure not the only person unhappy with how I was treated. If you are disappointed in me for not showing compassion, maybe you should think about showing me that same compassion you expect. You are not the only people affected by this pandemic.**

The lack of respect and communication at this gym is awful. I was told by the owner (on 2 different occasions) that an email will be sent to members once they plan on unfreezing memberships, explaining what the process would be to keep it frozen, etc. No email or notice was sent out, except for a few videos on their Instagram story (that goes away after 24 hours). So if you are not currently going to the gym, or have social media, you had no idea that they were going to a) increase the membership fee and b) start charging memberships again.

Once I got charged, I called to ask about the notice going out and was told its my responsibility to know how their business works and that I should be grateful to them for not charging me in October, or throughout the rest of the year when gyms were closed. I was talked to in a very unprofessional manner, and even yelled at, while I simply asked why no notice was sent out to explain their procedures. I was also told that they dont have access to members emails, and is therefore not responsible to notify me in any way and that I should have gone to the gym to see that they put notices up throughout the gym. I am very disappointed in the way I was treated over the phone, and at the complete lack of communication and responsibility, and I will not be renewing my membership here.

The facility is located conveniently off Rt 80 in both directions and has a good-sized nutritional supplement store attached to the front entrance. Now that I know what both offer, I'll be visiting this location from time-to-time. If you're not a member, you need to join. Trust me, it's well-worth your investment to support Topshelf.

I love the amount of free space to do abs. I've never been to a gym where the owners are literally always there, until Topshelf. They love what they do, and they're great at it. They make the gym the best!!! Recommend the Lake Hopatcong location too.

You won’t find a better a bang for the buck ran by amazing people who care about the facility and the people equally. No corporate bs here. Facility is up kept by pros who want to know what’s up if there are any issues at hand. They upgrade and maintain equipment fast to ensure it’s running and to make your training better. You can’t find a better variety machines, weights, plates, cables and grips. They have a belt squat and 100lbs plates, Enough said. If you can’t get a workout in TOPSHELF fitness center then you aren’t meant to be near a gym because this place is built for you by people who care! They have a supplement shop, private posing room and 24/7 access.

I'm a gym freak. Ill travel around and try out all the best. Bev Francis Atilis Gym. Diamond Gym. Now I am blessed to have an amazing gym within a mile of my home. The best environment. The best equipment. The best owner. And most importantly the best people training there. All for 24 hours, 365. Thanksgiving? No problem. Blizzard? No problem. After being a member at many commercial gyms in the past and getting tired of the same old crappy mass produced machines and the inexperienced staff that don’t care who you are and why you are there. I went on a search for a real gym and when I say real gym I mean hand picked equipment, driven and motivated people and staff. Having both owners Ifbb pros really adds a great benefit because knowing that when I walk into the gym they are there to answer any questions about fitness and or dieting. Or to have them training side by side with you. But to top it all of people respect the gym(s) by cleaning the machines and putting their weights away. Having members treat the gym like their home is a blessing. Also I can play one price and get the benefits of 2 24/7 gyms. Forsure a gym to check out.
