AOP offers friendly, welcoming, supportive and expert teachers who provide a safe space while sharing their knowledge. Doesnโt matter if youโre new to the practice, been away for a while or are a seasoned practitioner- youโre made to feel like part of this dynamic and warm community. Even as a virtual student, I feel like Iโm in the studio practicing with everyone. Thank you AOP for providing a safe haven and welcoming space!

I came in from out of town and decided to come practice here. Everyone was so welcoming, open and kind. You could tell this is a very tight knit community that a very encouraging and supportive to each other. Jamie was wonderful and even helped me with a pasteur I haven't been able to do without pain in months. I am so happy my sister moved to the upper west side as I'll be surely coming back here whenever I'm in town!

My husband and I have been learning Ashtanga from Jamie and Scott over Zoom for the past year because we live in Syracuse. I canโt believe how much we have been able to deepen our practice and learn Ashtanga from scratch over zoom! They are attentive and safely walk through new poses with spot-on feedbacks. We spent a week vacationing in NYC this summer so we could attend their classes in person, and it was so amazing to experience their hands on assists and immerse in the beautiful community of other supportive yogis. Jamie and Scott effortlessly love and accept all their students as who they are and at where they are. Warm souls. Highly recommend AOP to anyone looking for a safe, positive, and fun community to learn and practice yoga with!

The AOP (Ashtanga Open Practice) is the place to be if you want to be immersed in an extraordinary ashtanga yoga practice, be surrounded by other devoted yogis and have fun. This yoga practice has enhanced my total life experiences in many ways. Jamie and Scott, the founders and teachers at the AOP, are passionate, dedicated and caring. The quality of instruction, personal attention, encouragement and knowledge of the ashtanga yoga lineage is outstanding. The AOP welcomes all levels of yogis โfrom first timers to the seasoned yogi, and all their classes are on zoom. This is a yoga community that is much like a family โ everyone is very supportive and respectful of one anotherโs yoga practice. I am grateful to Jamie and Scott.

Jamie and Scott bring Ashtanga yoga back to its roots, where each individual uses the sequence to help their own body and their own lifestyle. It is not about making your body conform to the sequence and compromised to do so. There is talking allowed so people have formed friendships and community that is hard to find in many places. There are helpful tips and assistance to help one thorough injuries and hard times in life and encouragement to celebrate the wins. There are lots of laughs!
If Ashtanga feels too rigid for you, donโt give up on it and try these teachers! They are Manju-authorized (versus Sharath), which is an entirely different approach. If you have questions, you can ask because curiosity is not only allowed, it is encouraged! Everyone is welcome at AOP and everyone leaves with a smile.

Ashtanga Open Practice is a welcoming community with people of all ages and varying levels practicing together. Scott and Jamie have a friendly and non-dogmatic approach to the Ashtanga tradition, which makes the practice less intimidating and fun.
I also love how they have such a wide window of 6-11am to drop-in for a practice as it's easy to fit anyone's schedule. Before finding AOP, I had a hard time finding somewhere to practice after 9am.
The new studio space at Valor MMA is also incredible with the padded flooring that is firm enough to practice on, yet soft enough that it takes away the fear of falling from inversions and arm balances!
With the re-opening of yoga studios and group fitness classes, Valor MMA is definitely the safest place to practice during covid, as they disinfect the padded floors after every class, have UV lights to kill bacteria and strict compliance with requiring proof of vaccinations for entry.

I searched for two years before I found a place where I felt at home learning and practicing yoga in NYC. And now Iโve been with Ashtanga Open Practice since 2015. Scott and Jamie teach each student from wherever they are. They guide us all safely and supportively towards steadiness and ease in our own practice of the traditional postures of Ashtanga yoga. The practice space is inclusive and fun. My classmates range from teens to seniors, and beginner to advanced. And everyone of them is a joy to practice with. The sense of community is real, and very strong at AOP. And this held us all together through 18 months of Zoom practice. Now we are very happy to be in our awesome new space at Valor MMA. I feel very safe there, and with AOP, in all respects.

There is no place like AOP, I have searched high and low. This isnโt just a yoga studio, itโs a community of warmth and openness built around Ashtanga yoga. A community where everyone is welcomed regardless of experience or location (we love zoom!) and encouraged to develop their practice is a way which is best for them as individuals. Yes you can have it all: Ashtanga + Fun!

Ashtanga yoga can be intimidating, particularly to newcomers. At AOP, however, Scott and Jamie have taken a practice rooted in tradition, cultivated it, and allowed it to blossom into a worldwide community that extends far beyond the walls of a yoga studio. They create a safe space for each student to pursue an individualized practice, and whether youโre in the Zoom room or in the dojo, AOP is always filled with love, support, and laughter.

Scott and Jamie have built an amazing friendly and caring community both in person and on Zoom. Deeply knowledgeable about the practice, they have an uncanny ability to help each person, whatever their skill level and strengths and weaknesses. The space is great, with natural light, very clean, two showers.

Jamie and Scott offer a truly engaging and supportive yoga learning experience. For a student at the beginning of their yoga journey to the most experienced student, they are able to quickly narrow in on ways to improve your practice and give excellent advice and adjustments. I recommend AOP very highly.

Finding Ashtanga Open Practice is a pandemic love story for me. I so appreciate Jamie and Scott's warmth and commitment to creating community through Ashtanga on both zoom and in-person. And practicing with them and their infectious enthusiasm for Ashtanga is magic; I appreciate their vast depth of knowledge for the system as well as their generosity when it comes to sharing that knowledge and experience. Even more, they are respectful during this physical (and sometimes awkward) practice and they work hard to allow students to practice where they are (amidst injury and/or tight schedules) at. They love their work, their students, and their subject matter.
