Central Rock Gym is a world class indoor rock climbing and fitness facility. Easily accessible via train and/or bus, this location offers bouldering, auto belays, and fitness!

One key difference that I notice is the difficulty of bouldering. Unlike other indoor climbing gyms, these locations have bouldering difficulties ranging from V0 to V11, much higher than V9 of most other gyms. However, since there are more levels, the difficulties of each level are also slightly easier than those of other gyms too. Meaning, a V2 at Central Rock Gym is slightly easier than a V2 at another indoor climbing gym. To me, this is an ideal starting point for anyone starting to bouldering. The V0 and V1 helps build confidence for beginners and the slow incline in difficulty boosts confidence for more advanced bouldering climbers!

While you still need to rent bouldering shoes, you do not need to rent chalk. If you have, you can bring your own, but this facility provides you with chalk! They also have lockers for you to store your bags and changing rooms for you to change your clothes. Another great thing is the care this facility provides. Not only are the areas clearly marked and separated, but everyone is pretty much safely away from the fall zone. Not only that, but they also provide band-aids for the minor cuts, scrapes, and injuries you may incur during your visit.

I definitely look forward to coming back here. Hopefully, I can get to a higher difficulty level!

Friendly staff. Good training facilities and equipment.
Clean gym. Decent climbs.

Variety of wall angles and difficulties. Good roof section. Minimal slab.

Problems themselves are quite modern, with limited crimp routes even at harder grades. Movements were varied and on the whole interesting but sometimes forced and awkward.

Some holds needed brushing.

Has a tension board and spray wall. Spray wall not particularly steep. Good selection of campus rungs.

Some holds needed brushing.

Love this place. Had a blast with the kids. They got to do some climbing and so did I. I got to the top of a few of the tall climbs (which I was not expecting to be able to do) with some coaching from the great staff. They were so helpful and reassuring. I can’t wait to go back and try some more of the bouldering. Everything was top notch and clean. I don’t know what my expectations were, but they were def exceeded.

Good bouldering, but don't bother with the auto belay routes. They are for children and beginners only. Climbing Tourists which are used to European auto belay route standards (where you usually can choose out of many routes, up to 7c grade) will be disappointed. Also be prepared to spend at least 30mins signing waivers. At Brooklin Boulders, I only had to sign 1 waiver, why is this not possible here?

Middle of the road, mostly-bouldering gym, with a steep day pass price ($36). This facility put more emphasis on coordination boulders than other CRGs I've been to, which was fun and refreshing. TONS of slab! Their resistance climbing wasn't bad either, though I felt that it sometimes lacked complexity. Good spread of older/newer holds and volumes on the walls.
Training facilities include a spray wall (at something like 20Β°), an adjustable Tension board, campus board, and a couple hang boards. The fitness area was pretty bare-bones. There were a few benches and squat racks, and some cardio equipment. No weight machines. Only a single set of free weights.

By far worst gym chain in NYC for several reasons:
- smallest facilities
- no showers or towels
- shortest opening hours
- 10+min walk from subway
- inconsistent grades
- even the wifi doesn't work

What made it worse was that they have this rule that you can't get top rope certified unless you say it when you're coming in. They won't let you get it halfway during your session. I brought several new friends here and wanted to let them try top roping but couldn't. The staff were inflexible and not understanding at all.

Absolutely love this gym! The community is amazing and I love the variety of climbs and angles. Ryan, Tetsu, Ady, Jenna, and Theo are all amazing setters and the members are lucky to have them! Definitely the best climbing gym in Manhattan - spacious, fun problems, routes are updated frequently, and a wide range of training equipment.

Also, as a member, you get perks such as monthly guest pass and free climbing classes (non-members can take these classes as well). It's inclusive, too, with climbing classes from beginner to advanced. I've taken all of the climbing progression program classes (mostly taught by Ady - she's great!) and they taught me fundamental and advanced techniques and helped me develop my climbing skills.

Recently, I felt that I've plateaued so I signed up for the Train Like A Team Kid class with Jenna Tseng (Jenna is very chill and cool - motivates you without making you feel pressured or pushed). I've only attended two classes so far and I was able to send some problems that I was struggling with! This class is super informative and beneficial - you can ask questions about your projects and learn different drills to advance your climbing. The drills are making me more of an intentional climber and have made me more aware of my climbing habits. And the fitness session at the end of the class, will get you FIT!! Always humbling, but I love that it pushes me and I know that it will help me get stronger RAAWR.

My husband and I love climbing at Central Rock!! We have been climbing at this location (Riverside) since August 2019. The setting, programming, and facilities are all top notch. They offer classes for beginners that really helped me as an adult new to climbing. Now I regularly take Jenna's "Train Like a Team Kid" class - it's not only a lot of fun, but it's actually helping me break through my climbing plateaus. Love the community at this gym too!

Our son (14) has been climbing at CRG for about a year now. When we joined, we decided to have him take some private lessons to be sure he knew exactly what he was doing, and we have yet to stop... Weekly lessons with Josh have been a game changer. It has been so great to see our child change both physically and mentally -- he is now motivated to get to the highest level of climbing. Josh is a patient, kind, and knowledgable teacher and coach, and our son LOVES his weekly sessions at the gym. Our privates have morphed into duets (at Josh's recommendation), which has been amazing for our boy! Josh is super easy to communicate with, and provides great reports where appropriate. We highly recommend CRG, but especially lessons with Josh!!

CRG and Josh Hodge have been β€œgame-changers” for our two sons (now 20 and 17) and our family. The boys joined the club shortly after it opened and β€œfound” Josh on their own. There are not enough stars to give him or enough glowing adjectives to describe him – he is kind, compassionate, professional, inspirational and communicative. He has been an extremely positive influence on all of us! Josh not only physically works with our boys to build their confidence, hone their skills and strengthen their bodies, but he has served as a mentor and role model. Our older son is in college and makes an effort to find time to train with Josh when he comes home for visits. I feel extremely fortunate that he is in our lives.

My son loves climbing with Josh Hodge at Central Rock on West End! His climbing coach, Josh is amazingly patient and supportive in his teaching technique. Josh not only teaches climbing, but is a great resource for my 15 yr old to learn about strength training.
Through his lessons with Josh, my son's skills have greatly improved, as has his self-confidence and trust in his own abilities. His climbing time is a true stress relief from the all the pressures being a teenager brings.

Good bouldering. Fair weight equipment. Not much in the way of belay or top-rope, but that's not really what it's there for. Honestly, if you'd asked me last year, I would have given it five stars. However...

I'm knocking one star, because I cancelled my monthly membership in February 2023, and it took them 3-4 months to do so, even with monthly reminders. When I asked them to refund me, they said the contract stipulated that they didn't need to cancel unless I asked through a specific channel. I confirmed using waybackmachine that the contract at the time when I signed it did not have any such clause (ignoring the fact that cancellation requests are not just something you should decline if you aren't particularly fond of them).

And I'm knocking three stars, because after I called them out on that and asked for a copy of the signed contract to confirm, instead of correctly refunding me, they claimed that they would send one over. They have not, and I've followed up with reminders.

To be honest, I'm not even mad about the money. $500 is not worth my time. I'm angry that the employees here wasted my time, and lied to my face repeatedly, and that there's very clear evidence that it was intentional instead of just an honest mistake. I used to love central rock; I got my first V8 here. Now I'm just kind of disappointed and sad when I think of the place.

My daughter (young elementary age) has been coming to CRG for almost two years. The staff is always very welcoming (Hi Allan!) and they all know her and encourage her when she’s climbing. She’s been working 1:1 with Josh Hodge for about 7 months, and he is the BEST. He is so kind and patient, and generally is a wonderful human being. I am most impressed by how he is able to build on her love of climbing while also teaching her real skills and technique. I also appreciate that he is able to challenge her with different things even when the routes are not set up for her size and/or ability level. Josh is her favorite coach, but she has also had the chance to work with other coaches when Josh has been away. I also highly recommend Eddie Falshaw, who was also patient, kind and very skilled with young kids.

On weekends (especially late morning and afternoons) the toprope/autobelay area is almost exclusively families. They’ve made a change recently to have more autobelays than toprope for the easier rated climbs (5.9 and below), which is good to give families without a belayer some more variety but also makes it harder for more serious climbers to work on those climbs.

I started climbing at CRG a few years ago after attending a CRUX event. Everyone at CRUX was so welcoming, and the atmosphere in the gym was awesome–high energy, friendly, supportive. Visited this climbing gym during a trip to NYC for a wedding. The people here were great, and the gym wasn’t crowded on a Sunday. Enjoyed the route setting, and everything is color coded. It’s mostly a bouldering gym with a few autobelays and a few top rope routes. It’s a bit on the expensive side for a day pass, but it is Manhattan after all. Overall, enjoyed my visit here!

Loved it!!! Great boulders, great walls, and great people!

The setting was superb and had a ton of variety with lots and lots of routes. Despite not being the biggest gym, the space was used perfectly and had so many different wall angles. Not only that, but there was great density of holds and routes which made the gym feel twice as big. Plenty of fun routes for beginners, some tricky slabs for the intermediate, and maxed out with a powerful v10 and a few v9s. Even had a tension board, dope campus board, and some chill sport routes. Everyone was super friendly, gave great beta, and I even managed to get a free sticker from the staff! Great place to visit, can’t wait to come back πŸ₯³

My son (age 12) has weekly private climbing lessons with CRG instructor, Josh Hodge. When we started 6 months ago, my son had no climbing experience, was scared of heights, and uninterested in many afterschool activities that we had tried. Josh quickly earned his trust, and now he eagerly goes to climbing, asks for extra sessions, has worked past his fear of heights, and built climbing skills and all-around confidence. Highly recommend CRG and Josh as a climbing instructor. My son will continue to take lessons with him next year.

Really nice gym with fun route setting. The gym is in a basement and on the smaller side, but there's still plenty of walls to climb. There are also some weights in the middle and a small top rope section. The place is really clean and there are free chalk stations around. There are cubbies to put your stuff in and also combination lockers. Didn't see any showers, only 2 changing rooms and rest rooms. Probably to use as much space as possible for climbing. Most of the routes are below or around V5. There are not many harder climbs, which is fine if you're intermediate. It's also a bit pricey for a small gym ($33 for a day pass), but maybe I'm just used to Seattle pricing ($20)

We started climbing at Central Rock Gym six months ago. We knew my son would need one on one instruction and were fortunate enough to have connected with Josh Hodge. Josh has patiently and persistently supported both my son and myself in gaining the strength and skillset to over come obstacles that stand in our way. My son has a physical disability and Josh has gone out of his way, on his own time, to inquire about exercises that would help not only enhance his climbing, but his strength overall. Somehow he manages to challenge my son and make it fun! We have been very impressed with how professional and warm the staff at Central Rock have been and feel so lucky that we get to climb there!

There are many things to like about CRG Manhattan, but my favorite is the excellent quality of route setting here VS the other city gyms (and even the larger NJ gyms I've been to.)

I'm a two-time beginner. I'd just started climbing and had been climbing for about 4 or 5 months before Covid-19 locked everything down, so I had to start learning all over when gyms reopened.

Nearly every other gym has pretty boring route setting for lower level climbers, which hurts in the longer run because once you start trying harder grades you're not as familiar with all the varieties of holds and terrains. CRG Manhattan is different. The route setters make sure you encounter different types of holds and terrains even at V0, which is not only exciting, but also means you have a better progression into the higher levels. The route setters also have a keen eye to using routes to teach specific movements. I always feel challenged at CRG and it's even more satisfying when I send.

Aside from the excellent route setting, this gym is clean, welcoming, inclusive, and conveniently located. CRG also has a more inclusive definition of "family" for their membership plans than other gyms, which is why they were my choice when selecting a gym membership.

Standup rock climbing option in Manhattan (great for us lower Manhattanites looking for a climbing gym distance w/in biking distance) that is always exceptionally clean w/ plenty of challenges across multiple levels. Centralized, padded lifting center in the middle is handy for grabbing a quick workout in between climbs, while having the surrounding walls to catch beta. Smart design!

The first time I saw the space, I was disappointed. No natural light and pretty smallish space. However, I ended up loving the problems and the use of space. I actually found the routes to be really challenging and well thought out.

The staff at the front desk were really nice too.

However, I’m deducting stars based on the following:

- The amount of forms you have to fill out are laughable. At least tell us to get there 20 minutes early to share our life story with you so we don’t cut into the limited climbing time you restrict us to.

- The β€œday” (2 hour) pass costs are crazy high for the extremely limited time. I get we have covid times right now but reduce the price since you’ve reduced the time allowed. These are not β€œday” passes.

- I found the required training to be useless. You should have a system in place that verifies someone as a climber and not force them to take up the limited time you allot to do a training (on top of the stack of forms) that is meant for true beginners.

- I personally felt the girl who trained us to be smarmy and patronizing as hell but it might just be a personality and timing clash.

Overall, loved it enough to come back but didn’t really feel like it was an excellent experience. Just good enough until something better comes along.

In NYC, I've been a member of BKB, the cliffs, metro rock, and now here. This is my favorite climbing gym I've ever been to. The staff here is kind, clever, strong and humble. The route setting is refreshed faster, more creative, and more fun than any climbing gym I've been to. The landing pads are made of that good good modern foam that doesn't hurt your knees or ankles when you fall. But by far this gym is CLEAN! It may be in a basement but it's worshipped like a temple.

Very good, clean bouldering gym.

DAY PASS COST: $33

FACILITIES

The main climbing area is below the lobby. There is one long top roping wall following the staircase and a much larger bouldering area. This bouldering area basically forms a circle with benches in the middle a and a small weightlifting area. There's no cardio equipment. Overall, the area is very clean. There are dedicated changing rooms but no showers. What's cool about this gym is that they have these chalk stations around the bouldering area. Everything is very clean and well maintained.

SETTING

In general the setting is moderately difficult. There is a V0/VB circuit that always has black holds. Otherwise, the routes are color coded but there is no association between color and difficulty. Each route is assigned a V grade which can be determined by looking at placards spaced around the gym. Each placard contains information about the three or four routes near to it. However, the closest placard to a route is not necessarily the one that has the routes information, so you sometimes need to hunt for it. In general I think this is a creative way to show route information and it's much cleaner than writing on some duct tape.

The holds are in great condition. There are few holds with excessive chalk or shoe rubber and it's always easy to tell what color each hold is. Moreover the staff is careful to make sure that routes of similar colors are not adjacent to each other.

The setting is pretty straightforward from V1 to V3 and I think that around V4 is where the more creative stuff like dynos are really thrown at you. There are about 80 routes in the gym by my estimate and the difficulties are skewed for V4 and below.

CONCLUSION

This is a great gym. It's expensive (maybe not for NYC) but very well maintained so you know the money is used well. I love it when a gym does more than the bare minimum to make the climbing gym a good experience. I'll definitely return here when I come back to NYC.

Perfect for me. They have two auto-belays on relatively high walls. So easy - walk in, scan your card, start climbing. I've been going during the day on weekdays and have never had to wait. Membership effectively cost $165 for the first 2 months with equipment included.

This place is absolutely amazing. I took my daughter here a few weeks ago and we had a blast. There is stuff for all ages and skill levels. Allen, the manager was particularly helpful and accommodating. I’ll definitely be back weather it’s for a good workout or just to have fun.

Disclaimer: I only visited for bouldering and did no sport climbing in there.

The staff is super nice and the introduction is fairly quick and efficient, even for experienced climbers (at other gyms I had to watch a 10 minute video and do questionaries...)

The place is not too big but it also didn't feel crowded even though I visited them on a friday evening. The people in there were all friendly, I liked the vibe of the gym. There is free (and good quality) chalk, which is perfect for travelling visitors.

There are routes up to v9, and they are graded a bit soft (compared to european gyms and outdoor boulders). There are both overhangs and slabs and the holds are super nice and fairly clean. The routesetting was good and I really enjoyed myself. I don't know how often they reset, but 1 or 2 sessions are enough to do all harder boulders if you boulder v8 (7b) outside.

Overall a super nice experience!

By far the best bouldering I've found in NYC (with by far the friendliest crowd of regulars too). Better for bouldering than both Brooklyn Boulders locations and both Cliffs locations hands down.

Brilliant variety of routes, and (rare for NYC) not dominated by overhangs. Seriously creative slab climbs, corners, prows, bays.

Plus! Free chalk. Free training and social climbing nights for members. Never as crowded as the gyms I mentioned above, but with enough people there to chat to, learn from, tackle problems with.

Some cons: only two individual changing rooms. Small selection in the shop.

Very nice facility. Plenty of variety in terms of bouldering problems and they provide free chalk in bins around the gym which is something I have not seen in NYC. Not sure how old the gym is, but looks pretty new and the staff is very friendly.

Only con for me is that compared to other gyms in NYC, this gym is a little pricey ($33/day pass) for being a primarily bouldering gym. They do have a very limited top rope section but other gyms have comparable prices (few dollars cheaper) and offer a lot more top rope and lead. I guess it is in Hell's Kitchen so it can't be helped.

Overall, worth an experience if you're a climber

Good gym, but they kick out the kids under 12 at 3pm on weekends, even if you get in before 3. A slightly more lenient policy would be to allow kids to stay so long as they entered before the 3pm cut-off, which would achieve a similar result. Believe this is the only gym in the city that has a 3pm cut-off for youth.

This gym is an enjoyable experience. Signing up for a membership could not have been easier and the cancellation policy is so respectable it has other gyms in the dark ages. The facilities are clean and the bouldering routes change enough to keep interested. They have rope climbing, but if you are interested in going regularly to the NYC location, you should know it's primarily a bouldering gym.

I had a wonderful time with my friend here last week who had never been climbing before. From both our unique perspectives, our belayer Oliver catered to us and made the experience so much fun! We highly recommend him. Upon arriving, he was finishing a session with a 5 yr old girl (who could out climb us). It was really nice to see how great he was with the kids and how much they took to him. Wonderful to see someone who can work so well with kids and adults. Excited for our next climb and will be requesting Oliver!

The bouldering here is fun, plenty of problems and some interesting setting (I was bouldering at the V4/V5 level). The facility was clean, the changing rooms and lockers were nice, etc. The only minus is the top roped climbs: There aren't many, they aren't very tall, and the setting is pretty simplistic, surprising since the boulder setting is so fun. Hardly anybody uses them. I think this might do better to just use the bottom half of the roped wall as extra bouldering space.

I’ve climbed there a couple of times while visiting NYC. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Definitely a nice vibe with a good mix of boulderers across all talent levels. Setting is great with a lot of nice problems, again for all levels. Facility is nice and clean which seems to be part of the CRG brand. Really enjoyed myself.

Not to be too picky but I did find the day pass somewhat expensive ($30 at time or writing), although in all fairness the facilities are new and clean. Best of all, there’s free chalk!

Their staff were wonderful! I bought a Belay class Groupon at the first time and the instructor, sorry I forgot his name, he was very nice and helpful though. It was a great experience. Then I brought my friend there this Thursday. She loved it. One of their staff even stopped her cleaning to help us climbing. We had a lot of fun together. And when we left they were also very very nice to say goodbye with smiling face and passion. Definitely I will go back and bring my friends there again!

Very welcoming gym - got a good deal on Groupon to check it out, and it was totally worth it. If you aren't coming with a partner, they do have two auto-belays with a decent mix of routes in the top rope area. I'm not into bouldering, but they put a LOT of effort into their bouldering wall so if you are into bouldering there are some interesting problems. Also, I appreciated the yoga mats, free weights, and other weightlifting equipment. On the weekends there are lots of kids activities in the gym but even during parties there's room to squeeze in on the top rope wall. Overall I'd say this is much better than I was expecting, and I'll be back.

Wow! Is all I can say. I came tonight with not a clue of how to rock climb but always wanted to try. Allen, was so kind to walk us through how to use and do everything correctly and even gave us some one on one beginner training. We had the most epic time! Such a great, fun way to work out, have some laughs and learn the ropes - I hope to be a professional one day :). Definitely coming back here and 10000% recommend. Thank you so much!

Started my membership this month (transitioning from Cliffs LIC) and definitely looking to continue!

Pricing:
Standard for any rock climbing gym

Top Rope:
Primarily a bouldering gym.

Pros: Routes cater to climbers of mostly all levels (5.5-5.12 I believe)

Cons: Coming from a location that had a huge variety of toprope options, it is definitely a big transition with being limited to 8-10 routes at a given time.

Boulder:
Despite the amount of routes available/size at CliffsLIC, I would say that the bouldering routes here are much more interesting and provide variety as to types of problems available. From climbing here for a couple of weeks, it is evident how much thought the routesetters put into the climbs in providing problems that are technical, endurance-building, and, most importantly, fun.

Staff:
VERY accessible, VERY friendly.
There is always a staff member present on the floor of the gym to provide help with any questions, comments, etc.

Overall/Comments:
Gym is always well-maintained (clean)
The free chalk is a HUGE plus.

Would like to see:
Bar/Weights for the gym
Showers
Guest passes/1 per month are only free for first-time visitors and is half-off anytime the same guest comes the following month. It would be nice if guest passes can be applied such that it is free for any guest regardless of previous presence.

The facility is fine. Some of the setting seemed dangerous, a lot of the moves felt risky (slabs with not great feet up top with big volumes right below to break an ankle on and holds from other problems right in your face before a dynamic move). There are definitely some fun problems here still. There isn't much of a ropes section

The one thing that put a bad taste in my mouth for the session was that after the orientation to see if I knew how to fall, the employee giving the orientation told me to ask her if I had any questions or "needed beta". The rest of the night was filled with other climbers giving unsolicited beta. This is not the way to talk to other climbers. This gym should focus on etiquette before giving falling lessons.
