Really neat place! Very popular and there were some really creative walls. Of the v0-v5 walls I'd say they ran on the easy side. For example some of the v4s felt like v3s but despite that, they had some interesting solutions!

The only downside is that some of the people there were really smelly but that's not something the gym can control.

Excellent rock climbing gym. The staff are very supportive and helpful, and they have a great variety of rock walls. The weight room gym is also very funβ€” plenty of equipment of nice quality. I signed up to use the gym but got addicted to climbing too!

I started my summer membership sale which is one month free rock climbing. They were so nice! In fact I lost my wallet and they even say I can come back next day to update my payment method for membership fees when charged after summer membership sale discount is over. So glad I could do rock climbing again. Bring back inner childhood memories. Thanks to my good friend who come here lot

Great intro gym for people feeling out the sport! Checked it out recently and can say it was a VERY clean facility. Routes are definitely graded a bit higher than they actually are, which can inspire people new to the game. For safety sake, DO NOT apply skill level here to outdoor climbs as it would be very dangerous. On average deduct about two levels from what they rate off applying in real world situations. (5.10=5.8). All in all, great for casual climbers and beginners!!!

I've been going to CRG for the last several years or so here are some of my thoughts on the location

Pros:
- overall great facility with frequent re-sets to bouldering and top roping areas with lots of different climbing amenities: several auto-belays, a spray wall, tension board, new kilter board
- great inclusive community with lots of great events including competitions, fun climbing events, inclusive events (adaptive climbing day, women climb nights etc.), climbing movie nights, and others
- large friendly community
- access to other CRG facilities
- yoga classes
- weight room
- Good weekday hours with early hours (6am) MWF, and late closing M-F 10PM)

Cons:
- Relatively expensive standard membership currently 94$ / month per website
- Weight room recently lost a decent bit of capacity with the addition of the kilter board making it difficulty to find space to use weights during peak hours
- Parking lot that is typically full requiring parking on adjacent streets, however this is somewhat ameliorated by the gym providing free parking at a nearby parking garage which is a bit over a block away.
- Limited weekend hours at 9-6PM

Overall I've really enjoyed CRG over the years especially the community I found the higher price membership (compared to $70 at Rock ventures which has more limited facilities) worth it given that I personally got essentially two memberships in one climbing + weight gym. Recently I've been frustrated as I've found its increasingly difficult to use the weight room with the addition of the kilter board (it being January may also be contributing to this) but other members are sure to enjoy this addition. For me personally though I now find that I'm likely going to have to get a membership at a weight gym also. Overall after some insight from Jason I've updated my personal review.

The staffing and scheduling at this location is not ideal. Some days, there are six or seven people working at the front desk, while on other days, there is only one employee. I have experienced long wait times multiple times, sometimes exceeding 20 minutes. I have no complaints about the staff who are working; I just wish the scheduling was better organized.

Best climbing gym! More volumes and unique holds have been added over the years, which make for a good variety of climbs. Love the sets and everyone is always friendly. Pete's strength class on Thursdays is the best for an intro to working out and keeping in shape.

Excellent bouldering gym for those in downtown Rochester. Clean walls and clean holds, which I'm a stickler for. What stood out for me was that next to The grade for each climb, the setters would show a pie chart for how people rated the difficulty of that climb during an initial voting period.

-1 star only because some of the downclimb holds had been polished to a high shine and are in need of replacement. Ditto for a 4-sided pyramid volume that had been reduced to a dangerously patchy dual-texture hold!

The climbing gym's routes are very interesting and diverse. We came to this climbing gym from Canada and were able to do a lead test without an appointment. The staff's attitude and efficiency were excellent. As a chain climbing gym, this is my favorite one in the U.S.

Good, clean, modern climbing/bouldering gym with some interesting routes and sets. I was only able to boulder with the time I had and I enjoyed the archway climbs and some of the overhang ones. However, there were not as many routes focused on crimps and footwork. One suggestion would be to add or change to an adjustable tension board as it is permanently set at a β€˜soft’ 20 degree angle which doesn’t make it as challenging. It would be better to train on a board with at least a 40 degree angle.

Staff were also very pleasant and helpful. I will definitely come back when I’m in the area again! Thank you for having me CRG!

Fun and challenging gym with great energy! New climbing routes are set weekly. Great mix of varying climbing routes for bouldering and for different levels of climbers. They have a decent number of belay climbing routes as well and smaller number of auto-belay routes. The women’s locker room/bathroom is well maintained and clean. Monthly membership is pricey but it comes with the territory of this sport.

I find this gym somewhat disappointing. The atmosphere is generic and the setting style is limited. A climb would often have essentially the same move repeated throughout, and the style felt far from that of outdoor climbing.

It was also frustrating that the staff were loudly vacuuming while people were climbing, making it difficult to communicate between climber and belayer.

The staff were friendly and the facility clean. I write this review mainly to encourage the gym to offer Rochester something better :)

I've been a member since 2019, and as much as I enjoy climbing here its ridiculous that the parking continues to be restricted at this location. The back lot has been closed forever without being filled in. Now there are issues with the "free parking" in the parking garage. The slick and greedy owners of that have been sending members invoices for $46 a month which is wrong. Now there is no parking outside of the facility on the road which should be a city road with a new announcement that "the property owners" will no longer allow parking. So you expect all of your members to come but not drive, or drive and risk getting charged money or be towed at their own expense. Why would we come then? Its going to send all of your business to rockventures especially since your membership prices keep going up.

You also continue to open multiple gyms in multiple states at the same time so we know that you have the money to fix the back parking lot for us to park in. Its extremely greedy of you and inconsiderate to the people who pay to make your business capable of expanding in the first place. Have some respect back for the members that keep you up and running. This needs to be remedied asap.

My wife and I climbed here from the day that it opened until we had to move away. It was heartbreaking for us to leave this gym behind. The community and the staff at CRG Rochester are incredible and welcoming, the climbing was both interesting and challenging, and the various events and extras (workout clinics, rope/bouldering leagues, competitions, adaptive climbing clinics) were always very fun and well worth the cost of membership. I would recommend this gym to anyone at any level of climbing proficiency.

+Great place to climb with wonderful classes and community. Staff and members are willing and enthusiastic to help. The classes are free if you are a member.

-The lifting gym is secondary and because this place is so popular parking can be a struggle at busy times but there is a nearby parking garage that solves this issue (pretty sure they validate parking)

Really disappointed in this gym. I visited here once while I was in the area. Place is clean and does have A/C, which is nice.
My review is for the roped part of the gym (I do not boulder, per medical reasons).
Now for everything else: they advertise auto-belays, but only had 2. Each had a very easy 5.8 and one harder route (one 10+ that felt like a 9 and one 11 that was just crimps). There is little creativity here with routes. It is either a ladder or just plain weird. The 11 I tried could have had potential, but all it was was 30'-some feet of small crimps. Purely an endurance climb. Not necessarily bad in and of itself, but when it's the ONLY challenging auto-belay, it's sad.
They charge $25 for a day-pass, which is very steep imo.

Perhaps if you boulder, this is a good gym. But the ropes are anything but inspiring. Go to RocVentures nearby if you want better routes for cheaper.

While visiting a friend up in the Rochester area, he brought me to this place to go bouldering. While he’s a regular, I had basically zero experience with it, but it ended up being so incredibly fun! This was a great place to get into it, and I’ve been looking forward to the next chance I’ll get to go.

The staff were supportive and friendly, and the other members were all equally as outgoing, energetic, and encouraging. It seems like a really great community. The facility itself seems pretty great too. I have little frame of reference, but it seemed like there was plenty of space and the walls varied greatly to accommodate a wide range of skill levels.

I would highly recommend this place to anybody interested in trying it out! Even if you can only do some of the lower difficulty walls hahaβ€” I’m right there with you!

We had our son's 10th birthday party at Central Rock Gym. We had not been to the location before, but the price was very competitive so we decided to try it. I'm so glad chose to have it there! We have had many great birthdays around Rochester but this was the easiest to plan, the best communication, and the most pleasant experience we have had. Carlton and Olivia were his party's belayers and they went out of their way to learn the kids' names, be positive and encouraging, and create a safe atmosphere to learn how to climb. I appreciated how the gym and the party room both have excellent natural lighting and a relaxed atmosphere. There was plenty of parking and it was easy to locate. We will definitely return!

I joined this gym when I first moved to Rochester two years ago, and it's been one of my favorite parts of living here. The gym community is great, and the proximity to downtown is super convenient. As a new climber, the staff were super helpful in giving me tips, helping me get registered for an introductory belay course and eventually the lead certification class. Some of my closest friends in Rochester are people I met at the gym! Plus, if you sign up for a membership, you can go to any of the other CRGs for free, which is AWESOME. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that I wish there was more hold variety! But whether you are a brand new climber just looking to try the sport for the first time or an experienced climber looking for a solid gym, you will be able to have a good time here. Thank you CRG Rochester for introducing me to this incredible sport!

DO NOT CLIMB HERE!!! (Caps are intentional) The staff are uninspired, unmotivated, and only interested in hang out out and talking to each other. I asked for help and was told it would be a half hour. I was fine with that. I was in the gym for 1:15 minutes. During that time no came to help or check in. One female staff, spend about 20 minutes chatting with a friend. Another staff member was cleaning windows. A third was just standing on the gym floor, appearing to do nothing.

The gym climate is awful and you feel it the moment you walk in. It is a shame because the gym in Syracuse is full of life and energy. This gym is not. There is zero customer service. No one at the desk even bothers to say Hello, or anything when you leave. You are not worth the time nor energy to say Hello or Goodbye.

I have taken a belay class with an "instructor" who was so uninterested in helping you learn and who generally did not want to be there. I took a rock climbing class from a a "Coach" that was half a sleep, read from a typed sheet, and repeatedly said I would show you this but the gym is busy. You are the one you scheduled at this time. He did not know how to use a foam roller or its benefits. He openly shared that fact.

The facility looks nice and all, but the culture, and vibe is negative, unwelcoming and unfriendly. There is no customer services. They offer a family membership with little to no activities for children. They said my child could come to the rock climbing class, only to tell me when I got there he could not. How do expect a child to learn if you are not going to provide instruction?

If you want to express your concerns, you will not find a number. I call a different gym and got a number for a person to call. The phone call was return by a man that rush me off the phone and did notbwant to hear my concerns. The culture appear to be deeply rooted upper management of the organization, and it sets a tone.

I have live across the US and been a member of many gyms. This is by far the worse. I can not wait till my membership runs out. What a waste of money. Please do not walk away, run and never look back. You never know how lucky you are. Happy πŸ§—β€β™€οΈ

My wife and I took a 'belaying' class in preparation for a family outing. Jason taught the class. Very thorough and paced just right. Facility is excellent. I'd recommend this gym.

For the last 9 months we have had a family membership here. The overall organization, professionalism, and education at the gym has been fantastic. My wife and I have taken the lead class and it was really well-run and felt safe and fun. Our kids are all on the competition team and they love it as well. The route setting staff have fun and interesting boulder problems that change frequently. Overall, a very nice sense of community with wonderful people. We can't recommend this gym enough.

As a begginer it was a great time! The staff was very helpful but also very laid-back. There was so much room to advance as well. $20+$5 for shoe rentals was a great deal for an amazing experience

Wow! Went as a guest of a member and will definitely be back. They have bouldering routes of all skill levels - from beginner to "I'm going to admire that dude from afar!" - all color coded and with variety. Their staff was so inviting and gave me a thorough safety walkthrough. Masks were enforced heavily which is great. Highly recommend, even if you're apprehensive to try something new!

Phenomenal climbing facility with friendly and educated staff and a very clean facility. Ive been back climbing during covid and they hand out free alcohol based chalk and have hand sanitizer EVERYWHERE. Very clean and and people are great about masks. Its also a great facility when the world ISNT coming to an end.

Awesome place! Just started coming here a month ago and im hooked. Not normally the type to go to the gym but its fun here and a great work out. All the people are friendly and not judgmental. They change the routes often so its always something new!
Edit: been a member since my original post and its the best here, we come 3-4 times a week and its always awesome! Definitely recommend it if your looking to get in shape while having fun!

Great rock climbing gym. Didn't get to test out the actual fitness area but the bouldering was fun as a beginner while watching others do more complex maneuvers.

Was looking for an establishment to have a fun birthday party for all ages and sizes. The kids ranged from 15 to 4. This place had it all!! From the amazing wall climbs meant for kids (adult ones also) to the wonderful personable staff. The staff, I can honestly say, was one of the highlights. They were so encouraging yet patient. From teaching them how to climb better to remembering all the kids names in the party. The party room was huge!! They even let us stay later since there was not another party after us. Highly highly recommend this place. So much fun and all the kids can not wait to go back!

Great variety of climbing, frequently changed routes, amazing staff, and lots of events to keep things fresh. Very open to all skill levels, and a very welcoming community. Heavily recommend checking here put if you're looking at getting in to climbing. Rental rates are affordable if you don't have your own gear
