Truly the best bodybuilding gym in Manhattan FOR NOW... But the place is a pigsty. Antiquated and poorly maintained equipment. Showers are disgusting. They allow members to keep their stuff here overnight so finding a locker is rough. The “trainers” (most I wouldn’t let them spot me much less train me) here hog up 3-4 pieces of equipment at a time. Then just walk away without re-racking weights. Gym etiquette here is nonexistent - nobody would dream of letting you work in- they will watch you wait ten minutes while they play with their phone when they have “just one set”. Too many idiots documenting their every move with tripods and phones. The reputation as a serious bodybuilding gym is overblown - if you see 10 people training here, 3 have a clue as to what they’re doing and one of those 3 has a lick of manners. Attachments tossed everywhere. More plates on the floor than on the plate trees. You’d think with powerhouse opening 8 blocks away they’d be tightening up their game but no. Doesn’t matter, at this point I get a better workout in at the banged up NYSC on my corner which is absolutely pathetic.

I've been training at the 19th Street location for a while now, and I can honestly say it’s my favourite gym experience to date. The space is expansive, clean, and well-stocked with a wide variety of machines and equipment.

I used to train at the 57th Street location, which was fine, but I much prefer the vibe and layout of 19th. The staff and fellow gym-goers are friendly and respectful, which adds to the overall experience.

A huge highlight for me has been working with Marsha, an incredible personal trainer. She’s extremely knowledgeable, attentive, and brings such positive energy to every session. Marsha has helped me reach my fitness goals with a thoughtful and effective training plan, spot-on advice, and an unwavering attitude of support and encouragement. I’d recommend her in a heartbeat to anyone who’s serious about their health and wellbeing — she truly goes above and beyond.

This gym is awesome for weightlifting! I love the selection of equipment, and the staff are so kind and welcoming!

I specifically want to highlight my trainer, Marsha, who is absolutely fantastic!

I've been weightlifting and working with personal trainers on and off for 3 years in the past, but I've never made as much progress as I have with Marsha in the last 2 months.

Marsha is so dedicated to her clients! She always ensures that I have the proper form while doing the exercises, while also pushing me hard and ensuring I won't ever get hurt. This is EXACTLY what is necessary to make progress in the gym, and Marsha expertly tailors workouts to her clients goals and current abilities.

She is so knowledgeable about exercise science and nutrition, and I have learned so much from her already. I really love her mission of empowering women— I feel so much stronger, look leaner, and feel so much more confident in myself.

Marsha has truly unlocked my potential in the gym, and I'm so excited to continue working with her!

Cool gym! I won some personal training sessions through a Race for the Cure raffle, and I got to come here for a few months for sessions. Great facilities, clean locker room, energetic vibes, lots of machines!

I’ve been going to many elite, and not so elite gyms over the years as a fitness and weight training enthusiast. I feel that complete body is the best gym network to accomplish your fitness goals. First of all- I would like to state that I have returned to this gym several times over the many years I’ve been going to the gym. My reasons for leaving are unrelated, but always felt I had a great experience each time I rejoin.

Complete body has 4 locations each with their own unique feature. Upper east has a pool. Sun lit. And water is a great temperature. Fidi has a rock wall with great routes and a really experienced climbing coach, they even belay certify! There are Pilates classes with actual reformers.

… But 19th st in my opinion is what a weight lifting gym should be.

Atmosphere:
The staff is amazingly kind sweet and accommodating. They say hello smile and will chat, Michelle has been nothing but wonderful. The dudes and gals have huge muscles but not huge egos. People here may stare from behind a 350# rack on the squat machine, but give you a hell yeah nod, as you push past your plateau with a 20#

Facility:
If there’s a piece of equipment tried and true by professional lifters it’s here. Some machines I’ve never seen before and great to learn to use properly. Equipment is clean, and well maintained / routinely counter balanced. Music is great (back in the day they used to have a DJ here).

What truly shines and makes this gym worth its weight in iron - is the world class trainers. I think Completebody has selected NY’s most elite and finest trainers that understand the human kinetic chain, physique development and body dynamics and knows what it takes to turn pretty plain Jane into a superwoman that would make she hulk fangirl, above and beyond any other establishment.
Extremely knowledgeable, patient, committed, friendly and communicative. They are not just your trainer, coach, encyclopedia of fitness, they’re also your cheerleader in your fitness journey. Josdy, Sara and Roxanne are the best trainers I have come to know and couldn’t recommend them more. I worked with Josdy, and I having physical limitations she devised a workout plan that worked for me to keep me injury free and all the while achieving results. And adapted my training to my life style, target weak areas, work with / around my joint problems.
Truly blessed to have worked with her on my competition journey, I couldn’t have asked for a better trainer (spoiler. I had to drop because of unforeseen life circumstances, but to quote Arnold “I’ll be back”). I’ve made friends here, talking about fitness and have traded tips, techniques and life wisdom, and hi fives. And some days I just have my hood up and it’s just nice to just wave hi. This isn’t just a gym, it’s a real community of people who are awesome, and would recommend Complete Body 19th st to anyone who asks about quality fitness.
The trainers here have gained my trust and respect. And 19th st gym is the only place I would go to work with a personal trainer.

The only downside is they close at 9pm, which is reasonable hour, however as an evening gym goer - It’s a challenge of time to get a full workout in.

If you are searching for a hardcore, no frills gym, Complete Body, 19th Street is your place. Serious ppl who either train solo or with one of the many great trainers, this gym has some of the old school equipment that the new age gyms know nothing about. Make sure to hit the juice bar for a great shake on your way out! Members since 2017.

It was a hard time giving up my membership. I had a great time but I have to move to Jersey rn. The gym members care about each other. It’s enthusiastic! Wonderful. Thanks for the experience and I appreciate the time we spend together. The underground vibe and music they play is non like the other. Besides I like the boxing room the most, it’s big and clean.

A Mecca for serious lifters! They have a pendulum squat machine and Old school nautilus machines as well

Source: Google

★ 5

I have been to a lot of gyms, both high end and lower end, and this gym truly stands apart. A lot of the machines are of from the 80's with really well designed pulley systems to optimize the challenge of exercise you are trying to do. Not the case with most of the new machines of today. In addition, they have all the gear if you want to get in a "functional workout". Squat racks a plenty, and for a true lifter every kind of squat bar - from safety squat, to cambered, and the list goes on. I think my two favorite pieces there are the pendulum squat, and the assisted stretch machine for doing middle splits. I wish i had a gym like this out in California. I highly recommend if you are in NYC. Though i didn't get the chance to talk with a lot of the staff, I did speak with Michelle, i think she is the GM, and she very personable. Great customer service.

Really really good gym for people looking for a no frills, non commercial, bodybuilding/ heavyweights focused gym. Despite not being a very big gym, they have basically every plate loaded machine you could want and they have heavy dumbbells. It's never felt 'crowded' to me despite the relatively small sq footage because it doesn't attract a very casual crowd that you get in in other gyms plus a lot of people use personal trainers. Because of a smaller and more consistent customer base, there does seem to be more of a community feel here than you get in other gyms in the price range. It's also one of the few gyms that allows independent trainers. There's a juice/smoothie bar in the first floor that people like and I think has decent prices but I don't use it

Potential Negatives (or why I didn't give it 5 stars despite all of the praise above):
It's not the cleanest gym and the locker room and showers are pretty small and cramped. I'd rather not shower there because of that and usually don't but it's not unbearable. Some of the equipment is on the older side and could be upgraded easily and sometimes broke equipment can take a while to fix. The stretching/warming area is pretty small and combined with the kettlebell area area. It's usually not an issue but can be. That's part of the larger issue of things feeling cramped even though they don't feel crowded.

The 'functional' training area is small (a small turf sled track that it's in the middle of everything) and there's no 'wall' to throw things against so if that's the type of training you like to do, you probably will find complete body lacking. It's definitely for people who like traditional body building type of lifting.

While I don't go there for cardio, it doesn't have a huge cardio section, but it also never seems full since most people go to complete body 19th for lifting and not cardio.

It's also completely a basement gym so there's no natural light and if you're used to a different gym it can seem like a dungeon at first. This doesn't bother me at all now.

Overall, I've tried some nicer gyms (equinox, the new Chelsea Piers flatiron) and while they are 'nicer' and have more amenities, if you're looking for a gym whose focus is lifting heavy weights, then complete body is a great gym and I keep coming back despite some of the flaws

PS don't be intimidated by the the pretty serious and seriously jacked lifters here. I've never had any real problems with fellow gym goers

Compete body is a SERIOUS gym, still a little social but definitely not the average chelsea chat & cruise situation, which is great! The 19th St location is super convenient to chelsea, flatiron, nomad, village etc. The juice bar, check in desk and general tables are located street level. The gym is subterranean so if you're claustrophobic, it may not be your thing. Also, most of everything downstairs is painted black (walls, equipment). There is a small stretching area that's never too busy, same with the smallish but well enough equipped cardio deck. You definitely get the message, this joint is for building bulk, the end! There's a glass enclosed private room for sessions, never saw it used much. There are a variety of extraordinarily well built, world-class experienced trainers to choose from. I got super lucky with Saray (pronounced Sara) who, after having multiple trainers in my 25 years in NYC, is by far, the BEST! I know how to work out, however, with Saray it's about keeping my form in my 40's & 50's and I have seen more progress than ever before and not had one single post work-out day that I'm in pain or hurt myself (muscle ache is expected and manageable). Saray is like a hawk on form and she pushes just enough. She's also amazing at remembering how my body adjusts to certain exercises (so she's always trading those in/out to also keep the workouts interesting) and weights. She makes it a great time and as much as I'd love to say "I love working out" - I don't, well..or didn't until I met her. I wish I could have kept her after I moved...alas. I HIGHLY recommend her if you can get her. She's just amazing and has the best attitude, plus she's fun to be with and isn't a gossip (which I have overhead others being bitchy). Can't say enough about how great she is all around.
Back to the gym...the equipment is old but is kept well so it's in fully functioning order. Locker rooms are small but do the trick with enough lockers you can bring your own lock. Not familiar with the showers etc.
With the top-tier membership, you can also use the (formerly CLAY) 14th Street location which is a completely (pun intended) different gym to 19th St. This place is more stand-and-model in spades. "Can you please get your tight a$$ off the machine while you're on the phone and not using it?" This location is one floor above grade so there are huge windows, massive amounts of light and it feels like LA vs 19th St's NYC. Plenty of inspirational eye candy and the likes of Andy Cohen tricked out in a yellow sweatshirt and yellow vintage adidas - guess he doesn't want to get noticed! 14th is more chic, 19th is more all-business.
The only reason this is not a 5-star rating is in the way things went down when I left. I had spent over $3K for sessions, top tier membership. One day, I got a text that I had gone over in sessions AFTER I had maxed out and I was pressured to re-up my $3K. That really pissed me off - not good business to wait until a member goes over sessions to pressure them to re-up! Just so happens I was moving away so I said "no" to the request and said "just charge me for one session!" THEN - she charged me not for one session at any kind of package price but a fully-loaded $165 one-off session. I was really angry and honestly, I would have commuted from my new place to stick with Complete Body had she not pulled this b.s. I have shared this complete (again) review with friends and several have chosen to join. I send people to Saray as much as I can.
Oh, minor but beware, on occasion, some of the clearly (though I am not a physician so this is my impression only) juiced-up trainers can lock horns and be quite nasty to each other due to whatever is coursing through their bulging veins that makes them angry, mean girls to each other. Guess that's par for the course. Note to management - don't be so shady with renewals and don't forget to be nice after you swipe my card for $3K until the next time. Consistency, as you all say, is the best way to make your goals (business) a reality.

Hi Yelpers! I don't know but Elena Rott in the bottom loves to Yap around. I remember her from equinox she use to cry on the floor because the mangers wouldn’t give her attention.

Anyways, if you are looking to actually get your workout done and not yap around and be consistent this is the place I love this location because of the layout. It’s a gym filled with bodybuilders and Marathoners who are actually the nicest people to ask for a spot or advice about a workout.

If you want a pool they have this other location in Midtown East with a beautiful city view.

I will check the other locations that I have yet to conquer with my fitness.

They advertised on Instagram, I signed up. It felt like a scam. When you walk inside you see a dirty kitchen and some men who watch loud each their tv on their mobile phones, the girl at the counter plays loud music, she cannot even hear you. The guy who tried to sell me their weigh loss and training program was wearing for some reason a shirt and pants as if he would be working at the office, I have never met anyone at the gym dressed like that, he also didn’t looked like he would exercise himself at all. He was asking questions and suggested me a contract which would cost $2400 a month. I started believing it’s a scam, because the girl at the counter didn’t even know that I had an appointment there. They must think you are a fool. Everything was very wrong about this. I have never heard of gyms in New York which cost $2400 per month and look like a regular street club. It just doesn’t feel right. The men who were watching loud tv on their devices we disruptive and the entire thing and atmosphere was terrible. I hope no one will fall for that.

While traveling in New York, I spent some time looking for a gym with a pendulum squat and found Complete Body. I really liked the "old bodybuilding era" atmosphere of this gym. There is a large choice of machines, whether brand or model (Nautilus, Cybex, Hammer Strength, Rogue, etc.) and dumbbells up to 68kg (almost impossible to find in France). In short, if I lived in New York, this is obviously where I would train. And thank you to the girl at reception who was very friendly.

There are not enough good things I can say about completebody…
Having come from a commercial gym (rhymes with shequinox) I can attest that the equipment is far superior. While more weathered; it provides a superior muscle building and strength stimulus - I have progressed far more in the 3 months I’ve worked out at CB than the past year and half at my previous gym. It is also far less crowded than “Shequinox” allowing me to move through my workouts at a faster more natural pace (much less waiting for machines).
The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome and happy. In particular the assistant general manager Rudy and front desk associate (Hope?) are stars.
I particularly enjoy that I get to work with my private trainer Ryan who is knowledgeable and friendly.
Please do not join… as I would like to keep my sanctuary as private and exclusive as possible.

tl;dr - Complete Body is by far the best gym in NY if you’re serious about lifting.

I used to live in the city, and have since moved away, but travel to NY regularly. Staying in Chelsea, I’ve tried other gyms - Crunch, Lifetime, etc., and they’re all overcrowded and lack decent free weights and equipment.

Thankfully, I finally found Complete Body! This is a lifters gym and awesome if you’re serious about training. Equipment and free weights are great, and it never gets too busy. The protein shake bar is also a huge plus if you need something to get you going and recover. The staff are also very friendly. Week pass is very reasonable.

Look forward to going back to Complete Body!

Complete Body 19th St has been my main gym many years. Whether training or working solo, its’s a serious gym, down-to-earth members and staff. A special shoutout for Reuben Attawy, who keeps the facility at its best and is a super guy. Also a cheer for Michelle Weed who took over management and is top notch.

The people who workout here are focused on what they need to do and always willing to help each other out. I have to say since Rueben Attaway has been at 19th st, the atmosphere has changed for the better. He’s always hard at work making sure the floor is in order, and he’s always making sure that the bathroom is as clean possible amongst other tasks he performs in the club. His energy, and demeanor makes it a great place to train in. Reuben is a rare breed and glad he’s at this club!

I've just recently joined the CompleteBody community, my main gym being the FiDi location, but I always make my way to 19th Street to attend the Fight Club classes! The atmosphere is very welcoming and the classes have been a great challenge, shout-out to the instructor J-I! The classes incorporate both technical skills which are built on each session, as well as some tough station work for fitness, which I really appreciate. The classes cater to all experience levels and J-I is extremely helpful and encouraging, as are the other members who attend these classes! Would definitely recommend!

Participating in boxing sessions with J-I, an exceptional coach, means receiving continual motivation to build both physical strength and mental acuity, ensuring participants remain sharp and agile. I cherish the camaraderie of the friendly and enjoyable classmates, and I'm grateful to everyone for supporting each other.

I am reviewing JI’s kickboxing class
Frigging AWESOME!!
JI motivates us to be our highest when we are in class, we show up to be the best version of ourselves !!
He is patient but serious about us getting our form and basic technical moves right !
The energy of the class is a good pace , we are always moving , working at different stations till you get your one on one with (The Avatar) lololol
There’s a great camaraderie in the regular group and someone’s always willing to give you a hand if you forget your moves!
All in all you will learn some great fighting skills,
Train with a great group of people , the music will
Keep you on your toes and JI will train you like a prize fighter!

Came here to shout-out Fight Club instructor J-I. What sets this boxing class apart is how each session builds on the last in a logical progression that challenges the body and mind. While the content is ever-changing, the format of the class is consistent and structured to incorporate partner work, one on one time with the instructor, group drills, and core strength. Everyone gets training appropriate to their experience level regardless of the number of attendees in class, and receives individual feedback. Very motivating and fun!

Went on a guest pass with my friend as I was visiting the city. I had to give my contact details to ‘sign up’ for the day. Had I know that my personal information was to be used to be hounded and harassed In an unprofessional aggressive manner, I wouldn’t have bothered. Me giving my details over was not an invitation to hound me to become a member. All in all I was called, left voicemails, texted and emailed a total of 5 times. I found it quite pathetic and I’m being nice giving this place 2 stars as the interior was quite cool.
Did not appreciate the rude disrespectful comment my friends personal trainer made about me either.
I have no interest in ever attending what has proven to be a rogue establishment who employ rogues.

I am a regular at the 19th Street location, but the service here has gone downhill over the past few months. The hot water system for the showers has been out for over a month, so it is nearly impossible for people to take a shower if they want to exercise before going to work. Last week, I saw a cockroach in the weightlifting area, and I think the entire gym would likely benefit from a deep cleaning.

Several folks I know have stopped training at this gym over the past few months. Unless things improve, I will likely also begin training elsewhere.

I've been training with Alex Ustinov for the past few months and he’s absolutely spectacular. So knowledgeable and encouraging, he genuinely cares about helping you hit your own fitness goals. The class he runs “fight club” is the best part of my week. His approach to boxing classes is hands on, rigorous, exceptionally challenging, and unique. 100/10 would recommend, he’s the main the best part of this gym and definitely the best boxing trainer in the city.

I've been working with Alex Ustinov and taking his classes and he is the best trainer I have worked with. He is an expert in fitness, changes up classes every week and training, and has increased my coordination, strength, and overall confidence. He picks up on one's level of fitness to tailor your workouts while pushing you to work hard. His unique workouts have made me so much stronger and leaner. He has a great attitude and sense of humor and makes working out fun. If you're looking to transform your body and improve your well being Alex will help you get there!

It’s a great gym, with great old school equipment, along with photos of the greats who trained in the gym founded by Brian Moss. The members for the most part, are very cliquish, not very friendly, and have a lot of attitude. Those tendencies only got worse after the pandemic. But there are some very serious weightlifters there. The more serious people tend to be friendlier.

A real grunge gym experience, no chain, cute boutique gym that evolves more around "lifestyle" comfort vibes and latte conversations. You come here to work out and you among serious weight trainers, body builders and powerlifters. You put you phone down and it's about putting in work like everyone else is. This is not your Blink or Planet Fitness easy peasy "Starbucks" vibe like gym. Here is a real gym. It doesn't need to be pretty it just need to be effective a d the vibe setting, not a social gathering. Want results and willing to pay for it this is where I reccomend. Not for everyone. However if you truly serious about seeing changes, motivated you come here. Want to look cute go to Blinky Winky or Planet Barney Fitness.

19th street gym is adequate but it's mostly trainers with their clients who hop from machine to machine and sometimes leave the gym a mess. Staff is nice, the only thing I'm frustrated with is they will charge you an additional month when you end your month to month contract.

I loveeeeee the options but I wish the offerings would be more current- for example cleaner protein options and additives like spirulina and chlorophyll... things to really push interest. However, the staff is polite, quick, and the ease of being right above the gym really wins. The juices and shakes are also very decently priced for what you get in my opinion! Worth it for a quick afternoon pick-me-up!

CompleteBody 19th Street has some of the best staff in NYC. Constantly ready to help and assist with COVID Check Ins and procedures.

One trainer, Marcella, is the best in the business. Cleaning machines left and right to insure client safety. Creating communities between trainer and clients for the entire gym. No one works as hard as her, and the gym knows that.

This is the best place to lift in 2020!

This gym is definitely a throwback, but with SUCH a cool vibe. I'm always super impressed with the variety of equipment and how clean they keep the gym constantly. I started going to Complete Body because my trainer, Marcela, trains her clients here. She's the best trainer in New York City...and I've had a few, even from Equinox. Nothing compares! Every time I visit the gym, the staff are so nice and they're doing a GREAT job with COVID protocol. I feel safe here. It's THE ultimate gym to join if you're looking for body building!

Complete body is a wonderful gym with organized, thoughtful, and friendly staff. I joined the gym recently having been referred to train with the fabulous Marcella. I’ve played sports and exercised seriously my entire life and somehow find myself learning something new about my body and strength every time I train with her. Marcella finds a way to blend innovation into the most classic of movements. At Complete Body, I feel safe, sexy, and psyched to challenge myself with every workout.

They also keep it clean and have done really great job spacing out equipment to allow for social distancing. Complete Body, thank u!

THIS IS NOT A GYM FOR HEAVY LIFTERS. Friend was asked to leave this gym for lifting too much weight, after being given assurances when he started his membership that would be allowed to. If you are a serious body builder, power lifter, weight lifter, or other heavy weight heavy lifting individual, this is not the gym to go to. Particularly if you are planning to do deadlifts.
N.B. Management noted that this was due partially to unstable structure to sustain impact of deadlifting, be advised.
