Not a gym for serious runners. Treadmills are fine for some people, but not good enough quality for actually running at any speed.

Literally the worst gym ever. Sucks because this is the only “affordable” membership within the UES vicinity. Only one lat machine, leg extension etc however gym is an absolute zoo. No matter how early or late you go, it’s always packed. Super disappointed and dissatisfied her. Weirdest placement of machines as well. Avoid

One of the worst locations in the city. I’ve tried visiting during peak, off-peak, different days of the week, and it’s always bad. Old machines, rude staff and clientele, and the most confusing layout of a gym I’ve ever seen. Avoid!!

I just moved to the upper east side and was shopping for a gym when I came across Crunch. I had been to several gyms in the neighborhood but Crunch was very clean, the staff was polite and the facility had all the equipment I need. I highly recommend it.

The gym itself is fine, but the staff is consistently unprofessional. Don’t plan to work out right when it opens — they’re often late. I once had to wait outside in the rain for over 15 minutes with 20+ other members because no one showed up on time. Really disappointing.

I try to avoid this location and go to crunch on 59th and 1st. The trainers are entitled; 1 walked all over my mat while I was stretching and had to ask her to stop while another asked me to move so she could workout with her client. When I politely said I had 10 minutes left, she pushed me out anyways by invading my space with her equipment. The mens locker room smells and is covered in mold (don’t go in the steam room) and they seemed to have oversold memberships. It doesn’t matter what time you go, you’ll always be waiting for a machine. Also the towels smell like vinegar and mold.

Booked the 3 day free trial and booked with the 81st gym specifically. I drive there, pay $4 for street parking. The woman at the front desk tells me that the 81st location doesnt do the free guest pass... Then when i try to do the day pass she tells me its $35!! How is the day pass more than the actual membership??? I signed up to go to this location and couldnt even work out. Def would be going back to blink because as bad as Blink is, they wont ever make u sign up for a free trial and then tell u that u cant get in. At this point they wanted me to sign up so they could call me 5-10 times a week to sign up at crunch

I get a free trial online to go check out the gym and ACTUALLY workout. When i get there the receptionist told me to enter my information for the guest pass cool... then tells me to sit down and wait for the manager. Manager Mario comes shows me around the whole gym and then tells me I cant work out because the number of "guests" has exceeded which was like 4?... and told me that it apparantly says it in the email... yeah no. then he proceeds to try to make me sign up without ACTUALLY working out in the gym. Either sign up or you cant work out there basically..I dont know about ya'll but when there is a "free trial" it generally means you can try it out and maybe after you can sign up but its for the experience and he made it a bad one. . never again dont waste your time.

Broken AC in summer, stale chemical-meets-sweat smell year-round, and management that ignores repeated complaints — this Crunch Gym is hot, stuffy, and poorly run.

The open workout floor in summer is a wall of heat, the AC either broken or “set” to 72 degrees in peak heat like that’s remotely acceptable. I’ve complained at least ten times. Every time: “Thanks for raising the concern, we’ve made note of it.” And then? Absolutely nothing.

Last time, I suggested the cheapest fix imaginable — install a fan — and was told they “can’t do much” because corporate has to approve it. So yes, corporate bureaucracy is apparently what stands between members and $50 worth of moving air.

And when it’s not boiling hot, it’s the smell. Every time I walk through my front door, my wife says, “You smell like gym.” Not sweat — gym. Whatever they use (or don’t use) to “clean” leaves a stale, chemical-meets-sweat cloud that clings to you long after you’ve left.

Crunch’s motto is “No Judgments.” Maybe it should be: “No Airflow. No Fresh Air. No Accountability.”

UPDATE:
I spoke directly with the General Manager, who said, “Critical online reviews hurt us more. I wasn’t aware of any such issues — please send me a note directly so I can take care of it.”

Since then, I’ve spent over a month emailing both the General Manager and their Operations Manager — and yet not a single acknowledgment or response from the GM. Not even a sentence. It’s hard to imagine a clearer example of lip service with zero follow-through. Is there any accountability here at all?

Meanwhile, the AC and airflow situation remain exactly as bad as when this all started.

I was visiting from out of town. I have the Peak membership and told this is a "signature" club which meant I would have to pay a $10 fee to attend the club for the day (fine no problem)

Spoke with the manager Juan about attending the classes and was told its offered to their in house members 1st. That I must "hope" there's space available when I arrive. I expressed im coming an hour away on public transportation.

I asked if I could pay over the phone to secure a spot? (Since i would be traveling there on public transportation) Told NO and to try a different club (even further away)

I contacted another "signature" club and stated the same thing. THAT club was very accommodating and PLEASANT over the phone as well as "taking my name AND putting me on the list to attend their class) stating for me to pay the fee when I arrive.

It was very disheartening to be disregarded AS a Crunch member who has paid for the accessibility to go to other locations only to find out thats NOT the case.

Juan as a "MANAGER" speaking to me directly not trying to have good customer service was very off putting. Im not asking for entitlement ONLY courtesy for an out of town member, looking to attend the gym for 1 day.

Im in town for 2 days but I 100% know THIS location is not a place I would want to go to.

I DEFINITELY have a better appreciation for my home gym and the staff who are ALWAYS helpful and welcoming.

Im sure this review will not matter since Juan's response was "MY members pay WAAAAY more then the franchise"!

Sounded very snobby to me. So keep it JUAN. Smh!

Not the fault of anyone who works here just simply not a very good gym, the layout is pretty terrible if you want to actually lift weights, a gym needs more than 3 cable machines. Things don’t work, equipment is outdated, and it’s way too cramped to actually use anything. Also it’s kinda dark and depressing in there. If you’re gonna spend your money on a gym I’d recommend going pretty much anywhere else, and this is from someone who has gone to other far superior Crunches

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Smelly, disgusting, expensive, crowded, unsafe. I have never hated going to the gym until I joined this one. Crunch needs to shut this place down or at least bring this gym branch up to the standards other Crunch locations in the city set. Much of this is unique to this location. From the aging machines to the horrible smelling locker rooms, dirty equipment, crowding, nonfunctional AC, and high cost, this gym isn’t worth a membership. I’ve been a member on and off since 2020. The gym hasn’t been renovated in the slightest until this month, when the lockers were replaced. There’s dust and cobwebs all over walls and ceilings, and damage to decorations in various areas. I’d avoid if you can.

Gym is crazy expensive— paying $250 for june-august on the student rate. This would be okay if facilities were up to par. Unfortunately the gym is constantly overcrowded and there isn’t nearly enough space accommodate everyone. Very small & narrow free weight areas, lack of machines & machine variety, broken machines, leaks, and the weakest air conditioning in the city. It’s like working out in a sauna. There has been a leak in the cardio room for the past 2+ weeks. This place is a ripoff, go to planet fitness.

F
alsely advertises a free day pass — it’s a scam. I signed up online and went to the gym, but the woman at the front desk told me only the manager could approve it and that he “wasn’t available.” She told me to pay for a day pass, do my workout, and then talk to the manager after to get a refund.

After working out, I spoke with the manager — who was there — and he refused to reimburse me. Instead, he said the payment would just be credited toward a monthly membership I never agreed to. That’s completely dishonest.

This was a bait-and-switch. The staff was rude, unhelpful, and clearly not interested in honoring what they promote. I left feeling frustrated, disrespected, and tricked. This location is unprofessional and should not be trusted.

Gym is solid but a little expensive and very crowded during peak times. The worst part is the terrible A/C during the summer. You can barely feel it in the heavy lifting areas, especially if it is crowded. I like my trainer Chris but training sessions are crazy expensive, so it's hard to contribute buying sessions.

I love its zumba, cardio and yoga classes!
Crunch goes out of its way to keep its members happy and always welcome.

Gym has good equipment. Went in for a day pass and see my options before committing. Ryan helped me along the way and was helpful, I had to leave my ID in their office and pickup on the way out. When heading out - long story short Manager on site, Mario, made me feel extremely uncomfortable when not giving my ID and pushing the membership options + f&family discount after me saying “No” & explaining how I need to weight all my options since I am on the hunt for a gym, several, several and several of times. I kept it respectful but that unsettling conversation lasted about 10 minutes just trying to get my ID back until Ryan handed it back. The gym was an option for me until I had that experience with Mario at the end because although I understand commission needs to be met and you want that sale, that doesn’t give you any rights to keep questioning and interrogating me when I just wanted my ID back.

This gym overcharges for their membership - I paid $100 per month to access all locations when my friend (whose home gym location is Greenpoint) pays $62 for the same thing. I had to pay a $25 fee to pause my services for a month when my friend didn’t pay for this to do the same. Very disappointing.

Not worth using this gym as your home location. I’m glad I moved away so I can sign up for a different, more affordable gym.

Weights are sufficient and fairly tidy and about 60% full on a weekday mid morning, mid week.

Layout utilizes crooks and crannies. Cute if you like that sort of thing. Otherwise a bit too cozy.

Shower heads (lady locker rooms) have good pressure. Unlike other locations, towels are only located in between entry and PT desk, outside of the locker rooms. Towels seemed clean but they smelled like pickled bamboo shoots. The shower curtain of the stall I picked had mold growing on it. Also unlike other locations, I didn’t see any cleaning staff cleaning that morning.

Staff on main floors are friendly and helpful. Very easy to spot a trainer as quite a few are around.

Serviceable location, particularly if you’re focused on working out and planning to shower at home.

This review is for my trainer, Nma. I’ve been training with Nma since 2021, and it has transformed my health and physical fitness. I’m 4 years older, but stronger and more flexible than I was before. Nma’s dedication to creating interesting and varied programs closely tailored to the client’s goals and abilities has kept me coming back and making progress year after year. Additionally, her positive attitude and friendly personality makes it a pleasure to meet in the morning! I recommend that Crunch members looking to take their fitness to the next level ask for Nma at the Training Desk.

When I first moved to NYC, I wanted a gym that was affordable and accessible and Crunch did that for me! The 81st street location has some great classes and decent machines (although a bit tight in some spaces), but honestly the best part of my experience there is my trainer. Nma will assess your strengths and weaknesses and wastes no time in getting started on your goals. She also goes above and beyond and helps with your diet and educating you on compound movements and cardio to strength training ratio…she’s a WEALTH of knowledge and crunch’s biggest asset, imo. In between clients or movements you’ll catch her cleaning up the floor so there is more space, and greeting regulars. 10/10 recommend her if you’re looking to train and she always works hard to accommodate your schedule and squeeze you in! And her bubbly personality and motivating attitude keeps you going back!
I’m giving this location a 4/5 though because the mats are torn and shabby and so many of the treadmills don’t work which is a bummer because they’re a hot commodity! Otherwise, good affordable gym with great trainers (Nma in particular!)!

Had too many issues with billing, staffs' lack of professionalism, lack of towels, overcrowdedness, wait time for equipments and overall terrible layout of the gym just to name a few. The layout of this gym is odd, with multiple stairwells just to reach the equipment. The lighting feels straight out of an ‘80s arcade, which adds to the weird vibe. I checked in with ClassPass, and that process was smooth, but overall, the gym is pretty underwhelming.

Garbage all over the floors, Dirty towels always in the hamper even though I’m the 1st one in the place. The layout of the gym is awful. The only reason I still go is because of the proximity to my job. If you can avoid this place I recommend you do.

Finished my workout and went to shower and I was told that I would have to wait ten minutes before towels would be available. I have been to several other crunch locations and never experienced this issue. There is also only one location in the entire gym where people can get towels from, this is unwise, towels should be available in locker rooms or near locker rooms as well as on the main floors as they are needed for different reasons. I have never managed a gym before but this seems pretty self evident. There should also be more staff on duty at this time to account for the rush but appears only one person is handling towel duty, he is sadly being overwhelmed and overworked.

FREE TRIAL WARNING.

I am only writing this review to save someone else their time and the trip in the freezing cold.

I signed up for the free trial online and received my day pass via email. I then made my way to the gym only to be turned away and told (among other stipulations) that I would need an appointment with the manager unless I pay a $35 drop in fee. Are you kidding me?

As a private business you are entitled to have pink tutus as the dress code but transparency is a must. Why not include the most important part in the email??? When I asked the receptionist why they would not include the part of needing to make an appointment in the email he simply told me it’s under *further restrictions may apply*.

There is no reason to send someone a key to a door if someone else must present to open it.

1 star for not being honest and for refusing to work with me. (This is not the first review about their guest pass system). Completely turned off from crunch. No longer interested.

P.s I emailed the manager explaining the whole situation and instead of apologizing, he proceeded to justify the appointment procedure completely missing the whole point of the email and being upfront about it.

Reluctant being a member here - they can be rude and unhelpful. Sometimes they’ll clean the showers during peak hours so I have to wait 15-20 minutes to use it. Today they had 0 towels and didn’t send an email notice or mention as you walk in. I didn’t have time to go home and shower so I was forced to air dry and couldn’t use the steam room either. They also didn’t even apologize for the inconvenience. If you’re paying $100+ you expect common decency and to get basic needs met.

I got a free day pass to use the gym from an ad for Crunch Gym 81st street and decided to check it out the next day. When I arrived, a rude guy at the front desk without looking at me (he was just using his phone all the time) told me I should have scheduled a date to use the pass—something that was never mentioned when I received the email confirming my day pass

I scheduled a time to use my free day pass with the manager at Crunch Gym. After arriving and waiting a few minutes for him to check my ID, I was told I still couldn’t work out. Instead, they spent the entire time trying to sell me a membership, insisting that I had to sign up if I wanted to use the facilities.

I explained that we wanted to work out first, as I was doing a gym tour to decide which gym to join. He said that I have been there before couple months ago with a friend and he couldn’t allowed me to work out. Ok so what’s the purpose of a free day pass? This completely defeats the idea of trying the gym before committing and feels like a scam. Because while I’ve visited (more than 7 months ago) I’ve never used a free day pass—nor has my sister, who hasn’t been to the gym at all. Thankfully, one friendly front desk employee offered me a discount on a day pass and allowed my sister to use her free pass.
I was genuinely interested in trying the gym before committing, but the experience left me feeling misled and frustrated. Be cautious of their advertising—it’s just a sales tactic.

And the most important point, why is it so difficult to separate the area for yoga, it is impossible to concentrate because you can hear the music (loudly) from the gym. It has a heavy lifting room. Multiple cardio machines. A grass turf area. The price isn’t terrible. Only 2 water fountains I believe. But it’s clean and decent. Just a little small and cramped in some areas which causes you to wait for certain pieces of equipment

I wish the members knew how much they’re being robbed at this location. Absolutely no reason the monthly rate should be $100 when there are other locations that offer way more space equipment and amenities.

Layout to this place is whack. Ended up finding everything I needed and having a good workout, and I guess the quirkiness of the location has its own charm. It is a little challenging to navigate and find space sometimes.

Truly the worst crunch in the city. Avoid at literally all costs. So many weird levels, everything is split apart, the locker room is two levels (also the lockers smelled awful), half the wa areas were closed off, and not enough machines. Just avoid no matter what.

Manager dude (Peg?) way too pushy and (inefficaciously) slick in trying to get to join immediately, not wanting to give any time to think about it, check out other places. Regardless of the quality of the gym that itself gave a bad feeling about the place. Found a place where, when I said I'll step out to decide and maybe be back in ten mins, the guy said "yeah sure take your time" with no pressure, and that led me to take way less than ten mins to decide. Peg take note.

I’m staying in NY for the month and wanted to try a gym before committing to a membership. I got an online free pass to see if I liked it before paying. To my surprise, I was informed that the free pass is only for New York residents. I asked if I could take a tour to see if I liked it, but was told I could only do so if I paid $35 for a day pass. I couldn’t even see the gym before committing!

I spoke with the receptionist, PEG, who was very rude and treated me poorly from the beginning. Feeling disappointed, I asked if I could stay for a few minutes while I found another gym nearby, but he didn’t respond. During this time, a lady from Florida came in with the same request to check the gym before deciding on a membership. Without hesitation, PEG called someone to give her a tour. This was very frustrating for me. PEG then tried to kick me out of the gym, and I respectfully asked for a couple more minutes because I didn’t feel comfortable using my phone on the street, as I’m not from the area, I’m from Brazil, living in Pittsburgh. PEG continued to act rudely and insisted I leave, so I left.

This was the worst experience I've ever had with a receptionist, as they are usually friendly and try their best to help you out since they are literally the face of any business. Fortunately, I found another gym called Blink. While it's not the best gym, the staff are great and made my experience enjoyable enough to sign up for the month. I will definitely never try crunch again on my next visits.

As a morning member I have no complaints about the gym, its equipment, waiting time or its staff or other members but this new cleaning crew in the mornings is not it. Using any cardio machines with the strong smell of bleach is not ok, dusting the machines while someone is next to it is not ok. Vacuuming or mopping around patrons while trying to do a relaxing yoga session is also not it. I've been attending this gym since march and the crew then was polite, mindful about not being in your way. It was clean and I liked that they were constantly working around you. Edit- place smells terrible.

I love the atmosphere, the management so kind, but the gym is so warm, they have to add more fans specifically because the dryer is in the same floor so all the towl fabric and the heat make it hard for me to breathe because I have allergies.
I also recommend that if the management adds more water fountains, that will be great, but rather than that it a really good gym they have good equipment and I like their open and close hours.

I wanted to try this gym before joining, so I got a three-day trial online. When I arrived today to start the trial, the receptionist told me that the gym would not honor it after walking me through an entire tour and explaining their policies. I asked her why the website was promoting that pass if they aren’t offering it at this location, but she had no response. It baffles me that they would falsely advertise a trial on their own website and not honor that mistake.

Unfortunately, we do not have too many options when it comes to the gym on the UES. This gym has a pretty bad design, and you have to take stairs up and down. Also, it does not have the best equipment to train.

Overall, people at the front desk are friendly and welcoming, with one exception. There is an Asian American person who was very, very rude to me. I hope to take his picture and post here for others to be aware.

I've had personal trainers in other gyms in the past that kinda just go through the motions and send you home. That's not the case here! My personal trainer Andre Clark is absolutely amazing. I bring up something in feeling, next class we're working on that. Some soreness or tightness somewhere? Let's stretch those. Answers every question I have very knowledgeably. Personal trainer price is also excelelnt. Can't recommend enough!

Facilities are normal for a gym, built on two sides with multiple floors. Nice amenities.

We’ve been coming to this Crunch for an year at this point and even bought an upfront membership because we enjoyed the gym so much. We were told that we could freeze the membership at any point and when we tried to freeze it for a few months we were given the run around and apparently did not have our memberships frozen. We’ve been trying to contact the managers but nobody has responded to our messages. This rating would definitely be higher if we could get a response in a reasonable amount of time! Sad!!

I am super new to Crunch (I've only been twice) but so far, I'm really enjoying it! Steven's pilates/yoga classes are killer, but so much fun! Gyms are super anxiety inducing for me, so I pretty much only take classes. If there were small group intro-to-machines & weight training type offerings, even for an additional cost, I would definitely sign up. Also would be great to see some amenities offered in the locker rooms, like hair ties, deodorant, etc. but that's no big deal.

Love this gym! It’s always really clean and has a lot of different stuff. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have almost everything I need for cross-training. I like that there’s many floors so I can have some space if it feels crowded. Only downside is since it is a smaller gym there’s only 2 squat racks with platforms and one of every leg machine. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SERVICE. I WANTED TO TRY THIS GYM BECAUSE It is closer to my workplace so I signed up for the free pass one day. When I got there the person at the front desk told me that I cannot go in because I have to make an appointment with Albert first. I said that in the email it doesn’t say anything about making an appointment and his said that on the email it says “restrictions apply”. What this has to do with making an appointment?!? This should be written on the email because otherwise how are we supposed to know that we need to make an appointment!?? I was completely shocked and disappointed at the fact that the person at the front desk wouldn’t even make an exception since I came all the way from Brooklyn. Seriously ridiculous waste of my time. I will not recommend this gym to no one and I will not come back here. Seriously ridiculous. (it doesn’t even deserve a one star)

The space is definitely a little odd and a little too tight, hence the weird layout.
I wish they can put another to rubber mat to the space in the shower area. As of now, if one don’t make a big step out of that room, the feet will be on a big puddle of soap bubbles. Not a great feeling.

I tried to apply for a guest pass to try the gym after moving to upper east area. The membership advisor Pierre Moore is not responsive.
Pierre sent me an invitation email and then never replied my emails for several days. I tried to call the gym to ask what I shall do, and they told me to just email him again because I needed to schedule with him to activate the guest pass. They also said that they would ask him to call me back. After one whole day, no one called at all.
It's very difficult to work with Pierre, and even calling them won't help resolve the issue.
