Staff is kind but the process of cancelling your membership is hellish.

A significant part of a positive gym experience comes from the staff, and Dylan exemplifies what excellent customer service should look like. He is consistently friendly, grounded, and hardworking. He knows members by name, frequently provides tours, assists with new memberships, and takes the time to connect with people about their lives beyond the gym. He also steps up to handle tasks that often go unnoticed or unappreciated by others. I genuinely look forward to visiting the gym when Dylan is on shift. He has helped make Ithaca feel more like home for me and for many other students.

I would like to formally express my severe dissatisfaction with this gym's services. The customer service is deplorable, and the manager exhibits a lack of professionalism, inadequate education, and poor communication skills.

This establishment is selling memberships to minors to meet monthly sales targets, subsequently withdrawing significant additional payments—such as $132 and $118—beyond the standard monthly membership fee. When I disputed these charges months ago, the manager assured me that she would arrange a refund for the minors in question; however, no refund has been processed as of today.

In my follow-up call this morning, the manager stated, "I did my part; it's head office and nothing to do with me," before abruptly terminating the conversation. This response exemplifies her inadequate problem-solving abilities and contributes to a negative culture within the gym, where rules appear to be disregarded, especially concerning the sale of memberships to minors who lack the authority to enter into contracts without a guardian's consent.

I believe this situation raises serious concerns beyond mere consumer law violations, potentially involving criminal acts such as fraud and theft, particularly in the assumption that minors are powerless to address these issues. I strongly advise potential customers to reconsider their choice of gym, as the current management is unfit to resolve any problems effectively.

There are 2 young men that open up every morning. On time or early. There aren't many young people. That have been responsible for an early morning shift. Their always polite and keep the place clean.
Thank you,

I joined 1.5 years ago when the gym opened.I can honestly say working with a personal trainer - Crystal made all the difference. She took the time to really listen to what I wanted to work on and where I hoped to improve. Every session was thoughtful, challenging, and tailored to my goals.

Crystal is always innovating, switching things up, keeping workouts fun, and pushing me in the best way possible. Between her training sessions, my regular workouts, and the group classes, I’ve not only seen real physical results but also built a stronger mindset around fitness and nutrition.

I’m so grateful for her support, encouragement, and dedication. If you’re looking for a trainer who truly cares and helps you get results, Crystal is the one!

I have had a great experience at Crunch Fitness in Ithaca.I attend the Ride class regularly. When the music is more upbeat it gets the participants motivated, engaged, and wanting more. Some of the rap music has to go!’ It’s a real drag. Let the instructors provide engaging music!

Imagine you have a schedule and when you go to workout they aren't open because no one is there. So now you wasted your time because someone either didn't schedule correctly or didn't wake up to do the job they were hired for. July 27th 2025

Almost 2 months to the date and here we are again at 807 am on September 28th and no staff here. Place is supposed to be open at 7am . At least 10 people outside waiting, no staff, no explanation And just excuses

This review is for your excellent trainer, Rose. She listened carefully to my needs and goals, and put together a personalized training program for me. She demonstrated proper form for each exercise and explained how each one affected my muscles. She has a solid understanding of how interconnected our muscles and joints are. I’ve also taken her Joint Mobility class. She keeps an eye on everyone to make sure they are doing the exercises correctly in order to get the most benefit.

Definitely a nice array of squat, deadlift, bench, and free weights. I do miss all the nice staff who remembered the members and what we like/when we workout, but they've all quit or been let go because of unrealistic quotas. Just a quick reminder, we live in a small college town, with 5 other gyms, and where the universities have their own, free, and on campus gyms. There is a finite number of people to begin with! Bring back the staff and this gym would be a 5/5.

I learned recently that I required joint replacement surgery. I called Crunch to cancel my membership, a nice young man stated that he would cancel it, I would be responsible for another month of fees and the annual gym fee, I agreed. Done, right? Nope! A day later I got a call from what I assume was corporate saying I would be charged for the remainder of my 1 year membership AND the annual fee, I didn’t agree to this. Next day, called the Ithaca gym back, again, nice young man looks up my account stated I had a month to month membership that was up in September but he would connect me with “someone who could help”. In comes Jasmine, who states I have a year membership contradicting the individuals I assume she is responsible for training and that I was responsible for the remainder of the year and the annual fee. I replied stating that a joint replacement surgery didn’t count as a viable reason for canceling a gym membership? Jasmine responded “nope”. Take your dollars elsewhere folks, maybe a locally owned gym, a gym in your garage, hell a GLP1 might do the trick! But don’t give your money to this place, they have zero concern for your actual well being, big business box gym only and will rip you off. Get in a work accident and lose your limbs? Pay Crunch your yearly membership. Get in a car accident and get a TBI? Pay Crunch your annual membership. Get sucked down a crack in an earthquake? Pay Crunch your annual membership! Thanks Jasmine you’re a class act. Your gym is filthy and the last 2 times I was there the cops were on property dealing with people in the gym.

The gyms response to my review is a nothing burger. “We wish you well, we’re keeping your money, best of luck” would have been more concise.

My wife tried to cancel her gym membership because she is having a major surgery that will not allow her to work out normally for the next year - and potentially beyond. Although we signed up for a month to month contract (employees verified that was our contract as well), the assistant manager Jasmine maintained that we have a yearly contract and no matter the circumstances (no matter what!!), she won't cancel it. Much like all the other reviews I've read, Crunch fitness is charging us for an entire year membership that ny wife will not be able to use.

Furthermore, this gym is absolutely filthy. I have never once seen an employee clean the machines. The guests CAN clean machines themselves, but they are always out of paper towels to do so. I have on multiple occasions asked the front desk staff to replace the towels and although they tell me they will, they just stand idly at the desk and never do it.

This gym has a lot of great equipment, but the hygiene in this gym and their leadership/way they treat their guests sucks.

I have been coming to Ithaca Crunch for several months and am pleased with the experience. The gym is clean and well-lit, lots of different machines and weights, nice classes, and staff that go out of their way to assist you.
The manager Ben is really helpful, friendly and informative. He has hired a dedicated staff that work well together.
The locker room is a bit small, but for the most part, does not detract from my working out there.
Overall, I am pleased with this new facility and plan to keep going.

I had been a member at Island Health and Fitness for several years and the Y -- and before that, the City Health Club and IFC -- when I joined Crunch. In fact, I maintained my membership at Island for several months, because I wasn't sure I would like Crunch. It seemed kind of low-rent, literally and figuratively. But they have added to the equipment (especially the little yoga accoutrements) and they are clearly in it for the long hall.

Other than the view, which can't compete with Island (and which only seems a factor if you are rowing and like to pretend you are out on the Inlet with the geese and ospreys), Crunch beats Island in most respects:

More space... Very thoughtful layout
More machines, and in better condition
Newer, more ergonomic weights
More convenient water fountain
Much better parking facilities
Somewhat better hours
More friendly staff. (Island has a cloistered desk, protected from customers; Crunch staff are exposed to client contact)
I have particularly enjoyed classes and training with Crystal Allen, but the other instructors and PTs seem pretty good, too.

On the other hand:

The locker rooms are too small
Staff should wear visible name tags
I miss Mark's Boot Camp at IHF.
Weekend hours are terrible. Ask anybody.

For a while, I was worried that Crunch wouldn't get enough members to survive. Now I am wondering if Island will be able to handle the competition. I see more and more longtime Island client showing up, and obviously enjoying the facilities and the much more reasonable fees.

Crunch kicks ass!

Crunch is an amazing gym for everyone. For me, I love all the different fitness possibilities and the staff. When I first started coming the manager Ben was very welcoming. I was introduced to Ben by Matthew Watson the assistant manager. At the time Matthew was just starting his job there. I’ve been lucky enough to see Matthew transition at the gym from then to now. He is a perfect fit for the position he holds. Words cannot describe the passion he has for his job. He is kind and helpful to all members. Crunch is more than lucky to have Matthew apart of their team. I was lucky enough to have received Matthew’s help setting up a membership and to have him as a helping hand when I wanted to push myself in the gym. I pray he receive respect from the staff and members. I can’t wait to see how much he will grow in and out of the gym.

I was unsure when joining. But I did it at the grand opening and have been a member since. Staff is awesome and so helpful and encouraging. Especially Ben very knowledgeable and points you in the correct direction of the right trainers for you. I had tried to do my own workout but just couldn't keep the right track. My membership i purchased had all the classes I can take for no extra charge. I started to take advantage of it. Wow what an experience they are the two classes i go to on a regular basis our great. The trainers/instructors never single you out our always encouraging you to push through in a good way but never belittle you or call you out of class if you can't. They let you go at ur pace and just all and all will help you and guide you. If your looking for a place with encouragement and engaging works outs without the hassle of people judging you and your fitness level look no farther than Crunch in Ithaca NY I highly recommend them and there trainers and staff our top notch. They aren’t much better than all the other gyms with hidden fees. I signed up with a deal that waived the annual fee. Unfortunately, it turns out they charge a DIFFERENT annual fee of $70 (plus “convenience” fee), 60 days after signing up, which is only noted in the small print of one of the multiple pages you have to sign. After looking at the fine print again, they will also charge another $70, 1 year after signing up, which is expected. But that’s 2 payments, both considered “annually”, a year after it being advertised as being waived. The gym itself is nice, but the corporate billing department was a bit condescending when I tried to figure this out. Only repeating, “it’s an agreement”, “there’s no proof or notice that it was waived”, and I could just “cancel”. When asked why an annual fee would be 2 months after signing up, not a year. They kept saying it’s a “60 day annual fee”. It’s very disappointing to learn that they scam guests by having 2 annual fees and “waiving” one just to later charge you the other. I wouldn’t choose this if you are looking for a cheaper gym option like they advertise. Just choose the more know gyms where there scams are more documented.

Edit: after looking at the “owners” reply, I would like to clarify that they charge TWO annual fees. One after the 60 days, and one at the end of 12 months. So it’s TWO annual fees in your first year, not one like the owners comment is leading to believe.

So I was really looking forward to having a gym accessible to where I work the first couple times it was OK but then I started noticing more people disrespecting the gym. There were multiple times where people would basically be dropping 80 pound dumbbells, causing it to echo through the entire gym. It was quite distracting not to mention disrespectful brought it up to a member and they did nothing about it management member did nothing about it and after it happening multiple times I said enough is enough.

Canceling is even more of a pain because you have to email and wait for a response versus just canceling on site like Planet Fitness. I think I’m going to just revert back to going to planet fitness where people respected the equipment better and management around the facility as a gym and addressed the concerns of people.

So if you want to go to the gym where people slam weights throw dumbbells go ahead
Ok

★ 1

The conditions of the gym are very inconsistent. Some days you come in and it's like you're working out in a refrigerator, so cold to the point the metal machine attachments are freezing to the touch. Other days it's hot and humid.

Their group fitness classes are ridiculously and unnecessarily obnoxiously loud, with music blaring, the "trainer" yelling into the mic and their bell ringing between rounds of their circuit training. So loud to the point where if you're speaking face to face with someone you quite literally have to scream/yell for them to hear you.

I have two accounts there that I'm financially responsible for. Both were apparently past due, due to me mistakenly entering the wrong card. For both accounts, there wasn't an email, phonecall, text message, letter, absolutely anything at all stating it was past due. I come there almost everyday and every time I scanned my card, no one told me I was past due. It wasn't until the 30 day mark was hit and the late fee was applied to my account that they decided to say something. Literally the DAY after the late fees hit. When they easily could've told me I was past due every time I scanned my card. Or do like every other gym and membership-based places do and notify you electronically of the past due amount. Considering the same thing happened with two accounts, this is clearly done on purpose to collect late fees. It's unethical and ridiculous.

The "Manager" Rebecca, who wouldn't waive the late fees the day after they hit because she would apparently "get in trouble" but rather knocked $15 off of each late fee (they charged a $30 fee for both the activation fee and one month's member fees, totaling $60). When it was literally the day after the late fee hit, again without any notice whatsoever to me. There shouldn't have been any late fee at all considering deliberate lack of notification.

Then to hear that this same "Manager" goes asking people who did their tattoos and when she hears that it was done by me she rolls her eyes and catches an attitude saying "you mean Muhammad, the one that's here right now?" And clearly has an issue and becomes passive aggressive about it. It's so ridiculously unprofessional and childish, especially considering this is the person that is supposedly in charge of the entire operation there. Grow up.

When I spoke to her about the late fees, I was clearly bothered by it but still was completely professional about it. Clearly she took things personally. After she stated she would "get in trouble" for waiving the late fees as if it's not her responsibility or in her power to do so (which is ridiculous considering she's supposed to be the General Manager), I asked if it would be worth it for me to contact Corporate in regards to it then. She said "go for it". I went online and searched for a phone number and the only one I could find said "this line is not monitored" and then disconnected.

This practice of waiting until late fees hit people's accounts to tell them that they're past due is very clearly on purpose and is completely unethical. You can clearly see by many other reviews here that they are scamming and very dishonest with people in regards to membership fees, cancelations and late fees.

While I will admit, the quality of equipment here is great and the place is very clean, this is far outweighed by the very negative experience that I have had with management. It would be one thing if this came from someone that is working the desk and simply trying to do their job. But for it to come from the person that is supposedly in charge of the entire operation here and making up excuses and ridiculous reasons as to why she can't accommodate waiving late fees when the customer was never notified in any way whatsoever and the desk people decided not to say anything at all every time the membership barcode was scanned is absolutely ridiculous.

Having an almost 3 star review for a business that has only been open a few months is just embarrassing and very reflective of the low quality service and unethical practices.

Do better.

I have been a member of Crunch Fitness from the beginning. All I can say as a person who workouts regularly and cares about the quality of equipment is: Ithaca needed this gym!
Affordable, clean, supportive community and great leadership and trainers! I have the Peak Result membership and I brought guests with me regularly, no one told me not to!
Overall the gym is highly recommended, it is suitable for anyone who likes doing purely cardio workout, weight training or both!

The gym has all brand new equipment and is by far the nicest crunch gym I’ve encountered. A few specific things they got right is 1.) anchoring their benches down in a smart location so they don’t get scattered, 2.) all weights that match in sets, 3.) plenty of free standing squat racks, 4.) good air conditioning when it’s hot outside. They run a bootcamp HIIT class on the main floor area. The music and instructor speaks over the loud speakers for the entire gym and is extremely distracting and makes it hard to even hear your own music through your own earbuds. There also is a very high pitch timer that continually goes off every few seconds during the class. The pitch is so high-pitched that it triggers my migraines. I asked staff if they could do something about the high pitch sound, and the staff just looked at me and said this is the class timer... no apologies for it.
