About the Club

Dharma Yoga is a graceful, yet challenging form of yoga based on Sri Dharma Mittra’s practice of classical yoga. The practice is appropriate for students of all levels, from beginner to lifelong practitioners and accessible to so many because it meets each student where they are and according to their condition. As students move through the different series, they are encouraged to go deeper and experience the practice in a meditative and spiritual way. Sri Dharma’s passion for helping students go deeper in their practice using only the best and most efficient techniques with the ultimate goal of Self-realization (gaining absolute knowledge of the True Self) is reflected in all aspects of the Dharma Yoga system.

Super rude reception staff. The grumpy old cat lady with an attitude is not quite my expectation for yoga studio staff.
Trusting that karma will sort this one out ✨

The 500-hour LOAY program at Dharma Yoga was a deeply personal and transformative journey. It was a true honor to train with a living master—Sri Dharma Mittra—whose wisdom, guidance, and delightful sense of humor made every lesson both profound and joyful. One moment I’ll never forget was during satsang when he shared stories from his life that touched my heart and reminded me why I practice yoga in every aspect of life.

This training is an immersion into truly living yoga—named "Life of a Yogi" for a very good reason. The physical and emotional challenges of the program pushed me beyond my comfort zone, helping me grow in ways I never expected. The mentors and staff were exceptional—supportive, knowledgeable, and dedicated to each student’s growth. The warmth and encouragement of the entire Dharma Yoga family and community made the experience even more meaningful. Saying goodbye at the end was bittersweet, knowing these connections and support will continue well beyond the training.

The ultimate goal of this training is self-realization. Every challenge, every lesson, and every moment of guidance is designed to help you connect more deeply with yourself, your practice, and your life. I highly recommend this training to anyone who wants to get serious about their yoga practice and cultivate a deeper connection of mind, body, and spirit.

I have the best experience ever. My teacher was Jonathan and now Im planning to come back because it was the best class I have tried so far. He is very kind, adorable and helpful. Showed me how to stand on my head, correct a few positions (thank you very much for it). I am very impressed and I highly recommend to go to the class with Jonathan.

I'm an old student of our teacher. He taught me something very important a long time ago. I traveled for 20 years, went to the other side of the world and back searching and learning, and now I finally understand. You can imagine the excitement I felt to see our teacher again after so much time.

😕

The lady at the front desk was hostile. She is a small white woman with glasses. She doesn't remember me, but I remember her. I took a class once with her. She had negative energy then and nothing has changed. She kicked me out of the yoga studio. I didn't think a yoga studio would do that.

I understand she needs help, still... but does she have to spread her pain to those coming, seeking help.

I'm very sad and disappointed. Please put her somewhere she can do good and not spread pain. Thank you and God bless.

My experience at the Dharma Yoga Center was life changing. Prior to practicing with Sri Dharma Mittra, I practiced with many yoga teachers but primarily learned from books. After attending a Maha Sadhana, I decided to participate in the Life of a Yogi 500 hour training. Sri Dharma is a yoga master; he teaches with humor, is intentional with his adjustments, and shares the path of yoga as a devotional practice. Sri Dharma Mittra is a compassionate and loving master yogi. He has shown me how to look within my own heart. I love myself more, am better in my personal relationships, and have an established personal practice since the training. I am forever grateful.

I can only echo what some other people have written a less favourable review. I didn’t feel good at this place. Something felt off about this Dharma person. Very demeaning to new students. Hard to explain. Calling yourself ‘Sri’ is also a dead give-away. People who go there seem nice enough but also incredibly naive and impressionable. You should also be aware that some of the exercises he pushes like head stands can also lead to serious lifelong injuries. I noticed people trying it who definitely shouldn’t be doing these things. Carefully read what other reviewers have written about his style of teaching. Don’t sign that waiver.

I’ve been attending online classes and yoga teacher training at Dharma Yoga Center, and the experience has been truly transformative. All of the teachers are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and deeply dedicated to sharing the essence of yoga. Every class is well-structured, organized, and conducted with genuine care.

Sri Dharma Mittra is a unique source of inspiration. His wisdom, humility, and presence shine through, even online. It’s a blessing to be able to learn from him and from the amazing community he has cultivated.

Highly recommended for anyone seeking authentic yoga, whether online or in person.

I first discovered Dharma Yoga through my teacher Christian at Hot Yoga Malmö, where I immediately connected with the depth and transformative power of the practice. After a month-long Dharma Yoga workshop, I realized I wanted to immerse myself further in this path, which led me to the teacher training in New York City. I went with an open heart but limited experience, not knowing fully what to expect. Though I had heard much about Dharma Yoga, I hadn't watched videos or taken classes with the NYC studio beforehand. Stepping into that training opened up an entirely new world for me—one filled with profound wisdom and kindness.
The teacher training was so much more than learning Asana or memorizing texts. It was about life experiences, testimonies, and understanding how to live as a Yogi in every sense of the word. Sri Dharma Mittra, the founder, is a humble, compassionate being whose wisdom and Asana practice is unmatched. I was privileged to learn not just from him but from incredible teachers like Pam, Lyn, Andrew, Jonathan, Britney, and others. Each brought their unique experiences and voices, yet all carried forward Dharma’s message of compassion and selflessness. Their ability to connect with us on a personal level made the teachings deeply meaningful. Through them, I felt the true essence of Dharma’s teachings, enriched with their own perspectives.
Throughout the training, I found myself in a continuous state of learning—from Asana, philosophy, and anatomy to pranayama, Ayurvedic cooking, and the philosophy of living compassionately. It was both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to grow not only as a practitioner but as a person. The Dharma Yoga Center itself was a source of immense support, allowing me to focus fully on the training, for which I am eternally grateful.
Dharma Yoga is not merely about physical poses; it’s a way of life. It instils resilience, kindness, and purpose, enabling one to better serve themselves and humanity. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of this transformative training and to have experienced firsthand the profound teachings of Sri Dharma and his wonderful team of teachers. My journey has only begun, and I look forward to continuing to walk this path with a deep sense of gratitude and openness.

The real deal of Yoga in my favorite place on the planet.
I’m truly blessed and for ever grateful to be a Dharma Yoga practitioner and teacher for over 15 years. I’m graduating soon for my 700 hr DY LOAY TT. So, not only I’m getting to practice the real deal of Yoga, but I also get to share the true spiritual wisdom that Sri Dharma Mittra reflects. As a true Master he helps us all to understand and guides us on the path of Yoga, with the goal of Self Realization.
I highly recommend to try out a class with Sri Dharma Mittra himself or any of the amazing teachers at the center! It might be a life changing experience, like it was for me in 2007:)

I recently completed the 200-hour teaching immersion at the Dharma Yoga Center in NYC, and it was an incredible experience. The studio is stunning, with a bright yellow and gold room that exudes positive energy from every corner, making me feel comfortable the moment I walked in. The staff and mentors were some of the most wonderful people I've ever met—kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable.

During my two weeks there, we participated in public classes, which was an exciting opportunity. The room was electrified with energy whenever Sir Dharma Mitra taught. His spiritual lectures were engaging and insightful, reflecting his deep connection to his practice and years of learning. He communicates with a personable style and a delightful sense of humor, reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously. Remarkably, he often answered our questions intuitively, as if he could sense what we needed to know.

The experience was so powerful that it was difficult to return to everyday life. I cannot wait to return to the studio and immerse myself in its spiritual atmosphere again. I also hope to continue my learning and pursue a 500-hour teacher training in the future. The people and the experience were truly remarkable, and words cannot fully capture the essence of it.

This is a very late review, but I can’t seem to get any sort of response from Dharma Mittra or anyone on his team. I teach yoga now, so I’ve often reflected on my experience at his studio. After reaching out multiple times since the event, I have yet to receive any sort of acknowledgement of the harm he and his assistant caused.

I traveled to NYC in part to practice with Dharma Mittra. I had a steady practice, but was not a former gymnast, dancer, or contortionist - I realized quickly that I chose the wrong class as it seemed the room was full of the above. We were guided through a series of physically demanding postures. I was the only one in the room who couldn’t go to the extreme that he was looking for, so he singled me out. Dharma and his assistant manually adjusted me MANY times without permission. Yes, I realize I should have said no or got up and left. But I think this is an unfortunate example of what many students experience in ego-driven, ableist classes. At one point I was in lotus pose trying to come to headstand. It was physically impossible for my bone structure. Dharma knelt down next to me and in a voice loud enough for all to hear said, “Your body is like a Cadillac and you don’t know how to drive it”. Students laughed, and this seemed to only spur him on. This is the only comment I can remember clearly. Others were made at my expense and it was totally humiliating. Aside from the embarrassment I experienced, I left physically injured. The harsh adjustments caused permanent damage to my left hip.

The class itself was a total show. Students made a circle at the end and took turns showing off their abilities. It was cult-like.

Now that I lead teacher trainings, I can’t help but come back to this experience. Not to dwell or be a victim, but to play a small role in reshaping western yoga. Ahimsa is the first Yama, and one that all others should abide by. If you’re doing harm, it’s not yoga.

A response from you or your team would be appreciated.

Why the Dharma Training?
My experience from the 200hour Dharma Teacher Training in 2024:

It is one of the very few worldwide trainings with an authentic Guru!
The program is very extensive and includes next to the general Yoga Teachings also special Classes such as Partner Yoga, Cooking course and Psychic Development.
The Teachers as Karmic Yogis; they are very understanding, no matter what emotion you are going through. They hold a safe space to do your work.
The Studio Manager is very considerate. Everyday during my Training, she organised a small treat during the breaks.
The studio has the most beautiful Shala that I have ever seen. It looks golden like a temple, with beautiful paintings and ornaments even at the ceiling. So no matter in which asana you are, you can be inspired. The Shala is also treatened like a temple. Every blanket has been folded by love and placed neatly in the shelfs. All over, it is very clean and feels like home.
There is a lot of equipment at the studio. The cushions, blankets etc. are all high quality and various.
You will learn to use a Dharma Wheel. Its was mind-blowing chest-opening for me.
Dharma teaches you tricks for specifically difficult asanas.
Dharma has a very deep understanding of Karma. You think you understand Karma? Come there and listen to Dharma…
This is a very devotional Teacher Training. You will grow into making yoga a self-less act.
I loved the music in Dharmas Classes. Everything about his Classes is very happy - the energy, his jokes and the music.

Everyone has their own journey. When it comes to dharma, he’s a guide. When you take his class as the student, and if you listen carefully enough, you’ll learn from him thru his words the way ‘into’ your own body. Some miss this entirely. And I can understand that. When you get it, you get it. And then you have it for life. Om Shanti!

A fuir

I’d like to preface this review by saying it will be based on my opinion and preference. I’ve been practicing yoga for 13 years and have studied and taught the practice for 7 of those years. I hope it will be helpful for some.

When looking for studios in NYC, I was recommended the Dharma Center by several peers. While in town, I visited the center and had a class with Dharma Mittra.

It was easy to sign up for the class online and we were greeted very sweetly by the front desk staff. They made us feel welcome and showed us around the studio. I was grateful for that since it was my first time.

Upon walking into the class, I realized it would be a different experience than I’m used to. Before class, students were filming Dharma, taking photos of him, and practicing physically advanced asanas chaotically throughout the room.

I felt more assured after an introduction from Dharma with lots of thought provoking spiritual ideas and practices. But once the class started I realized I was out of my element. The Saturday morning class is definitely for physically advanced practitioners. It was a choppy sequence of incredibly intense and quick moving vinyasas, balancing postures, and back bends. Students who were hyper flexible folded into the poses while the rest struggled to unsafely follow.

Dharma regularly used the phrase “if you’re flexible” and pointed to students who were exhibiting the ‘perfect’ alignment. It was certainly not a class for everyone but for the few ‘fit and flexible.’ We were being taught in a way that implied you’ll only be able to do a certain posture in a certain way if you practice more; completely disregarding the idea that someone could have an injury or other limitations.

At one point during class, I was prompted by the instructor to change my alignment in lizard (a deep hip opener). Without asking, he pushed my low back aggressively towards the floor and said, “keep striving.” I have a very sensitive low back due to long-term injury and this was traumatizing to say the least.

A few times during class, folks stopped to film his demonstrations but they were also panning the camera across the room to record other students in the class. This made me uncomfortable and took me out of what little meditation I could find.

This was a fascinating experience. A few times during class I felt so uncomfortable that I wanted to roll up my mat and leave. I’m sure there is plenty of Dharma’s teachings that I’m missing or that I’m ignorant to. It’s clear he’s doing important work and his message and style resonates with a big group of people. I’m just not one of them.

I saw that there are gentler options on the schedule. In hindsight, I would have opted for one of those.

I couldn't make to any of the Dharma's class because my appointments crashed with his schedule. So I arranged a private yoga session with their instructor Azusa, which she took good care of me and taught me well.
Ive exchanged more than 10 emails with front desk and the director of Dharma Yoga weeks ago before I came visit about having the private yoga session. After the class they suddenly cut it short from 90 mins to 60 mins and blamed it on the teacher and said she had engagement. They didnt notify me before class so I asked for a refund nicely and they said 60 min private and 90 private would charge the same.
I had a call with the director directly and she wasn't too nice and responded with what would you want us to charge, I asked how much you want to charge? she said whatever you want without apologizing.
I am sure many students would come because of dharma, but i strongly recommend anyone not to private class there because of the poor customer service. This is the worst experience I have ever had since practicing Yoga.

Taking any class with Sri Dharma Mittra is an honor, as can be seen from his jam packed Saturday 10am classes, but to truly experience the wisdom and compassion of a living master with almost 6 decades of experience, there's nothing that compares to Dharma's Life of a Yogi teacher training programs. I've had the privilege to participate in the Dharma LOAY 200hr program first in February 2018 and it was an exceptionally transformative experience for my yogic development. Dharma and his senior teachers and staff are all so warm, welcoming, and eager to share their vast knowledge of all things yoga with you. The studio is pristine, spacious, and always cozy, with plenty of room to sit and relax or meditate between sessions. The 200hr training is incredibly in depth, focusing on all 8 limbs of yoga on and off the mat. Dharma also leads morning pranayama and meditation, which were some of my favorite sessions. This past summer I had the opportunity to audit the 200hr LOAY program both in person and remote and I can only say that each time gets more rewarding. Dharma has a wealth of knowledge on yoga that goes far beyond just advanced asanas, and he is always willing to share what he knows with his students. What really sets the Dharma Yoga Center apart is the community that comes along with taking classes or participating in one of the training sessions. The senior teachers and training staff make themselves available for any questions or concerns you may have and are always happy to share the way with you. I cannot recommend this studio or Dharma's trainings highly enough. Om shanti

The classes they call Beginner are not beginner. They do shoulderstand and headstand every class which can cause serious injury to the cervical spine. They don't warm up properly. They also do very advanced back bends that can also seriously damage the spine. This is a good studio for advanced practitioners who know their body. But is NOT RECOMMENDED for people who are unfamiliar with yoga. Unfortunately, the teachers do not fully warn or explain the possible serious damage they can cause.

One of the first books on yoga I came across was the “Asanas - 608 Yoga Poses” by Sri Dharma Mittra, which I found very inspiring and still page through on a regular basis. A couple of years later (back in 2015) I was ready to enrol in the 200-hour teacher training program at the Dharma Yoga NY Center. What followed was an extremely intense and thrilling set of 10 days, that significantly deepened my understanding of yoga and took my asana practice to the next level. It was an experience of a lifetime to study with a living legend and his senior teachers. Dharma’s piecefulness, ease and humor are contagious. Make sure to visit Dharma’s temple, if you are looking for an authentic, truly inspiring experience.

Cancelled Workshop without ANY Notification!

I signed up for a workshop, paying in advance. I checked the Dharma’s website 2 hours before the workshop, and it showed the event was still active. However, when I arrived, the receptionist informed me it was cancelled weeks ago.

I received NO notification of the cancellation: that is NO email, NO phone call, NO refund prior to my arrival. This experience cost me a 1.5 hour round trip commute, $7.00 in train fare, and the opportunity to do other fun Sunday activities.

Advice to the Dharma Yoga’s Management: Treat your clients better. Yoga in NYC is a competitive industry with plenty of other Yoga studios around.

In a city with so many Yoga Studios and styles of yoga, Dharma Yoga Center really does offer something special. I began practicing yoga in about 2001, at the time I found myself going from yoga studio to yoga studio, (some of which I never even entered) in search of a yoga studio I liked. I wasn't quite sure exactly WHAT I was looking for, but I just KNEW the moment I walked in the door of the Dharma Yoga Center (the old one on 3rd ave), I just knew.... this is it! The studio felt like home. I had an immediate sense of welcoming there. I felt like this was the "real deal". All of the teachers I encountered there had something unique to offer and classes were consistently great. With work, life and moving to a different state, I fell out of yoga for a while, all the while Dharma Yoga was in the back of my mind. Any time I'm in NYC I visit the center and take as many classes as I can. I practice their DVD's at home and take them with me when traveling so I can practice on the road. I recently completed their 200HR Life of a Yogi Teacher Training and I was not disappointed. Life changing and now considering the 500hr!
If you live in NYC or visiting do your inner self a favor and attend some classes here. Sri Dharma Mittra is truly someone special. All of the teachers here are amazing! My favorite classes : Master Class, Yoga Nidra, 5 postures for purification, Any Level Dharma Yoga class, Maha Shakti, Maha Sadhana - actually ALL of their classes! Hope you enjoy their classes as much as I have. Namaste

I love this place! Whenever I visit New York, Dharma Yoga is my home away from home. I've gone just to spend a weekend practicing there. It's like getting my batteries recharged to be in that space. The studio itself is very conveniently situated in the Flatiron District. There are great vegan options right near the studio where you can get food after classes. When you get up to the studio itself it's like entering a bubble where the hustle and bustle of the streets of Manhattan fade away and you feel calm and welcome. It's like a yoga oasis.
With all the teachers you can't go wrong. You can tell they are there because of their love for the practice and tradition of yoga. The classes are fun and challenging. Meeting, training, and practicing with Dharma himself is a life-changing experience. Just to see him in action is a treat and inspires me to go further with my practice, finding just how much I'm capable of. That's a great teacher. He has an aura of depth but he never lets you put him up on a pedestal.
Their Life of a Yogi program for current and aspiring teachers and seekers is a rare opportunity to come face to face with the living, ancient tradition of yoga. I went through the 500-hour level training. I was excited to get that certification, but I ended up getting so much more. What I really got was experience with a genuine master teacher. They have an 800-hour program which I hadn't really been thinking of taking, but after my experience with the 500 there's no doubt that I want to go further with my training with Dharma. Even if you're already certified at these levels you can still receive so much from training with Dharma. He's known as the "teacher's teacher" for a reason.
Give Dharma Yoga a try and see what yoga really is. Namaste

Conveniently my previous post appears to be missing from their Facebook page. IF YOU ORDER, BE PREPARED TO WAIT. I ordered Dec 1st and is wasn't shipped until the 10th. Here's what their 'customer service' had to say: "We worked very hard to make your wheel and it was actually shipped much earlier than expected. Next time please place your order earlier in advanced, instead of leaving it last minuet. Have a great day." THEY CLEARLY LOVE THEIR CUSTOMERS!!

I call Dharma Yoga my yoga home in NYC. I absolutely adore this place. The studio is warm and inviting. The people who run it are kind, thoughtful and dedicated. The students are open, friendly and non-competitive. The common practice in New York of looking over one's shoulder to see if there's someone doing the pose "better" does not happen here. This is pure and honest yoga for the sake of advancing the body, mind and soul.
