Same university that will charge you 100k a year and send you emails bragging about the annual return on their $16bn endowment will also have the worst fitness facility of any school (including high schools) in the entire city. Half the machines don’t work, the staff doesnt clean anything, etc. I guess if you keep cashing checks, you can provide your students with the worst facilities imaginable and it won’t matter.

honestly one of the worst organized gyms i’ve ever been to. Working out here for the past 4 years has been so disheartening. So much tuition, yet cannot even a little bit trickle down to a renovation? The space is small, the equipment is old and rusted, and there is just not enough equipment for the number of people it’s meant to service.

Undoubtedly the worst gym I have ever been to. Old equipment, little air conditioning, the entire floor of the weight room shakes when someone deadlifts (this is heard even in the lower floor), and incredibly poor layout.

Too few equipment for the people it’s supposed to serve. As if numbers being an issue isn’t enough, the equipment is in terrible condition. It’s one thing to be old, but it reflects a culture of mediocrity when it is clear nobody bothers to maintain the place. Floors are plain filthy. Weights aren’t racked. Equipment is rusty. Half the time something is broken. Many aren’t oiled so it squeaks loudly. And the water fountain is broken a quarter of the time. Staff is just lounging around, not doing anything.

Not a welcoming atmosphere at all for those interested in exercise at all levels (beginner to expert).

My wife works in the university and we wanted to go to the gym together, so she bought the membership for a year. Today I decided to try only one day’s membership and we went together there. But outside the gym they can’t allow me to pass inside, so I am too upset because we wanted to go there only together. My wife also doesn’t have motivation to go there without me. I tried to get the refund but it was unsuccessful, the support can’t help us. It’s not fair to not have information about it on their site. She bought the membership only because we wanted to go there together and it is possibility to buy membership for spouse but no information about the prohibition to go inside the gym for people like me. I lost money for the day membership and my wife for the whole year because she definitely won’t go there without me. Why don’t post information about it on the site? What should she do, go to another gym with me and pay for another annul membership again? I am really upset that support unable to refund my money that I lost today. I paid for the service that I didn’t get, it’s stealing my money!

Do better, columbia. How about we spend some money on the gym, which is ostensibly for improving students' health and well-being, instead of gentrifying harlem?!

Not renovating dodge is one thing. The real show of stinginess by CU is the fact that students have to pay to lock their stuff into lockers. I am not able to bring my own lock; the majority of CU's lockers are inaccessible because we need to pay the towel + locker fee to even open them. The only low-cost/free option is the small number of 12 inch box lockers that barely fit a backpack, and for those, your option is to 1) pay per use to lock the locker, or 2) risk getting your stuff stolen. Can CU either allow students free access to the locks and lockers, or let us bring our own locks?

The gym is terrible. Outside of being dirty and messy, there is not much equipment and there’s only one of each. Every machine or spot has a line of people. To make it worse, most of the time people are on the machines scrolling their phone or just chatting.

★ 1

I thought people were exaggerating when they said avoid Dodge at all costs. They weren’t, This is the absolute worst gym in my life. The equipment to people ratio is absolutely insane. If it’s not an elliptical or treadmill, there is like one of each workout machine which always has a line of people waiting to get on the machines. To give you an idea of just how little equipment there is, there are like five floor mats and weight benches for the entire gym. Mind you, this school has thousands of students. It makes no sense

The layout is also horrendous. You have to squeeze past people doing their workouts because they reserved such a small space for workout equipment and it’s always packed. The fact that there are three different floors, albeit each with tiny workout sections, tells you how wild this layout it. Whoever designed the place should really think about how poor a job they did.

I don’t understand where the money is going because it’s definitely not here. I have to wonder is physical and mental health important to the admin if this is how they treat their students? Do better.

The equipment in itself, when present, is modern and usually well maintained.
However, the gym is way too small and under equipped for the size of the uni. Always way overcrowded, even at 11:30pm, it's hard to get a bench, or the cable flye, and you have to always squeeze your body to pass through, as the layout is very weird (about the quarter of an ellipse, on three floors).
For such a prestigious university with very expensive tuition, you'd expect the gym to be much better. Not at all welcoming to newcomers, intermediates and advanced users given the little availability of equipment.

For an elite university, this facility is severely deficient. It is too small, not clean, not modern, and equipment & machines are not maintained. It's remarkable that a school charging such high tuition provides such an inferior facility for their students. Disappointing. (Edit: reference points are USC and UCLA student fitness centers)

I am a fellow member at the Dodge Fitness Center and must share honestly that the state of the gym reflects poorly on Columbia's importance of mental and physical health. As a member of the community who uses to gym to have maintain good physical and mental health the poor state of the gym is a direct reflection on how Columbia values the importance of a well maintained gym and how it impacts the overall health of the average community. The weight center is extremely overcrowded with very old and rusty instruments which make it undesirable and very difficult to use with long wait times. Additionally, the pool locker room areas are rusty and smell horribly with poor maintenance. Additionally, the gym has a very crowded small space for stretching before or after a workout. The running track is quite fascinating however, it is larger than the entire weights/treadmill/fitness center combined and does not even have many users at times when the other parts of the floor are overcrowded.
In summary, it seems as if Columbia designed this place poorly and fails to update it which reflects very poorly on their view of the community physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

Weights are never racked, they're randomly strewn about hallways. Most of the pull-up / dip bars got replaced with really low quality ones with no grips recently. The sauna goes down frequently and it's a quest to find soap in the showers. Overall I'd say exactly what I'd expect for something run by an ivy league school.

Quite dusty and usually really busy at peak hours. The weights and treadmills sometimes have lines and it can get a bit stuffy for that reason. If you know what you're gonna use, it's a convenient place to workout near campus, but I really wish Columbia would invest in a bigger, cleaner gym comparable to other universities I've visited. For cardio, it's smart to reserve your machine in advance.

This is the absolute worst gym, potentially in the country. The designers said "What is the worst way that I can design a gym?" And they did just that (3-4 split levels for workout equipment that should be on 1-2 levels. Weight lifting on the 1st and 3rd level. The equipment (barbells, dumb bells) is in terrible condition and outdated. The workout benches have material breaking off, which brings up sanitary concerns. It is always hot and crowded. If someone plans to improve their mental health with a workout, then go to a place that shows that they care about their gym - this is not that place.

I am an avid gym goer, whenever I am on campus I try to get in some time lifting weights.

Dodge is nice capacity-wise it doesn't have a large amount of people waiting around and it has second floor has 3 power racks, 2 additional squat racks, 2 functional trainers a whole cable system with two pulldowns, two cables rows, and two triceps extension stations. Top floor has a serious amount of cardio equipment and some good Nautilus equipment for iso work. Also can't forget to mention the indoor track which is nice.

I haven't explored much else, but it's nice to have.

Only gripe I have is that the weights are kinda old. They have steel plates with rubber bumpers on them from God knows how long ago rather than proper competition bumper plates or even crumb bumpers.

That's pretty much it, it's just an honest review.

You can totally get a hard workout in here, but don't expect to be blown away.

Dodge Physical Fitness Center is one of the best place for recreation in Columbia University campus. Unfortunately it's overcrowded. It's a well equipped gym, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton and Swimming pool. It's free for students and to access some of the services or gym trainer, it'll require basic registration fee. It's an underground fitness center that's spacious and clean. Dodge Fitness Center is only open to registered Columbia University, Barnard College and Teachers College students and faculty and staff.

This gym is just embarrassing. Small, overcrowded, not clean, poor ventilation, bad equipment, realistically planned to hold 1/10 of potential Columbia people. It is really embarrassing for Columbia University to even advertise and maintain a dedicated website for this terrible structure. This is the worse University gym I have seen so far...
On the other hand in the same building there is a whole section for the athletics teams the ALDO T. "BUFF" DONELLI room. It is the most beautiful, strength and conditioning space I have ever seen. Despite being in the same building, this 6,000-square foot room, $2.5M worth space is just accessible to Columbia athletics student. Not even the incompetent Dodge admin staff was aware of it.

This whole place is just a joke. The fitness center is always overcrowded. The weights are never in the correct places, never organized. The dumbbells are falling apart. The walkway is so narrow it's a major liability, somebody could move in just the wrong way and bump a person pressing weights and somebody could get seriously hurt. The weight benches are literally in the walkways so that people need to swerve around the people lifting on them. I have literally never seen a barbell free because so many people are always waiting for them.
The lowest level of the fitness center needs to be cleaned, it consistently smells of body odor that it can't be from the people, it must just be an unsanitary area.
The pool is overcrowded so that 2 people must swim a lane. And, unless your part of the swim team, it is only open to you for two 2-hour sessions a day. Of course at lunch and dinner times.
The community college I went to before this Ivy league had cleaner and more upkept facilities.

I graduated from Barnard a year ago. I still can't believe I used to settle for this place as a gym. If I could do it over I would invest in a local gym membership at a place with more fitness equipment so I wouldn't have to wait in line or come back an hour later. It also could use friendlier staff (yes, that means the student employees), and a cleaner/ more modern facility in general. A workout should perk you up. But there was never any music playing or windows to even peek out at.
